Molecular transformation and photochemical reactivity of microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter on goethite: Implications for persistence and reactive oxygen species dynamics

Daofen Huang,Ling Ding,Xinran Qiu,Bin Zhang,Xujun Liang,Xuetao Guo,Haoran Dong

Microplastics (MPs)-derived dissolved organic matter (MPs-DOM) is emerging as a significant contributor to environmental DOM pools. However, the molecular-scale processes governing its interactions with mineral and their effects on photoreactivity remain poorly understood. This study elucidates the structure-dependent molecular transformations and photochemical reactivity of DOM during its interaction with goethite, revealing distinct mechanisms driving reactive oxygen species (ROS) dynamics. Hydroxyl radical (•OH) production universally declined as goethite adsorbed electron-donating groups. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) remained stable due to the presence of persistent aromatic photosensitizers. Triplet-excited DOM ( 3 DOM*) exhibited divergent trends: humic acid (HA) and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT)-DOM showed decreases due to aromatic core adsorption, while fulvic acid (FA) and polystyrene (PS)-DOM exhibited increases driven by humification-stabilized quinoid systems and sulfonation-enhanced conjugation, respectively. The aliphatic inertia of polyethylene (PE)-DOM minimized ROS fluctuations. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) indicated that HA retained lignin-like components and stable sulfur/nitrogen heterocycles, while FA preserved branched quinones. PS-DOM underwent sulfonation, generating benzene sulfonates that enhanced 1 O 2 formation, whereas PBAT-DOM hydrolyzed to nitrogenous metabolites that suppressed •OH production. PE-DOM remained structurally resistant, consistent with its hydrophobic aliphatic chains. These findings emphasize that goethite’s selective adsorption enriches redox-active aromatics in natural DOM but promotes the persistence of MPs-DOM through sulfurization and nitrogenization.

Hydrological controls on antibiotics and mixture risks in upland and lowland rivers: a dual-tracer study combining antibiotics and DOM optical properties

Zhaoxin Su,Shuangbing Huang,Fengchun Yang,Jiayi Li,Zhijie Wang,Junwei Zhao

Land use and hydrology drive distinct spatiotemporal antibiotic patterns. • Upland urban rivers peak in dry seasons; lowland agricultural rivers in wet. • DOM co-varies with antibiotics and mediates mobility via composition. • Effective control requires season- and region-specific management strategies. Understanding how antibiotics behave in upland and lowland rivers draining mixed urban-agricultural catchments is essential for hydrology-driven water quality management. We investigated 48 antibiotics and Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) optical properties at 49 sites along 12 rivers spanning upland headwaters influenced by urban land use and lowland reaches draining predominantly agricultural plains during dry (low-flow) and wet (high-flow) seasons. By combining antibiotic profiles with DOM fluorescence and absorbance indices, including PARAFAC components, we applied a dual-tracer framework that uses antibiotics together with DOM optical properties to interpret spatial and seasonal patterns under contrasting hydrological and land-use settings. Upland rivers subject to urban point sources showed pronounced dry-season antibiotic concentration peaks, consistent with wastewater-dominated inputs under limited dilution. In contrast, lowland rivers draining intensively cultivated areas exhibited the highest cumulative mixture‑level ecological risks, driven by cocktails of antibiotics transported from both urban and agricultural sources. Protein‑like DOM signals were associated with human-use antibiotics in urban‑influenced upland reaches, whereas humic-like components aligned with veterinary antibiotic dominance in agricultural lowlands, indicating stronger runoff contributions during wet conditions. Overall, our results show that flow regime and land use jointly control the redistribution of antibiotic concentrations and mixture risks across multiple rivers, and demonstrate the value of a dual-tracer approach that combines antibiotics with DOM optical properties to diagnose point- and diffuse-source contributions in mixed-use river catchments. Impact and Mechanisms of Microbial Communities and Environmental Factors on the Composition and Structure of DOM in Lake Ice, Water, and Sediments

Yingru Tao,Weiying Feng,Qiwei Gu,Tengke Wang,Fanhao Song,Tingting Li

Microbial communities serve as crucial mediators of dissolved organic matter (DOM) dynamics in seasonally ice-covered lakes. This comparative study of a saline plateau lake (Lake Daihai) and an eutrophic freshwater lake (Lake Wuliangsuhai) revealed distinct winter microbial patterns, with sediment communities exhibiting 2–3 times higher diversity than ice or water habitats. Fluorescence characterization identified fundamental differences in DOM sources, where saline lake DOM showed mixed terrestrial-autochthonous signatures (fluorescence index: 1.4–1.9), contrasting with the strongly microbial-derived DOM (FI > 1.9) in freshwater systems. Vertical profiling demonstrated progressive humification downward through ice layers, while microbial functional predictions indicated sustained amino acid metabolism despite subzero temperatures. The unique halotolerant community structure of the saline lake contrasted sharply with the psychrophilic Flavobacterium-dominated assemblages in freshwater habitats, reflecting differential adaptation to environmental stressors. Dissolved oxygen and salinity emerged as primary drivers of community composition, while phosphorus availability influenced specific functional groups involved in organic matter processing. These findings highlight the resilience of microbial-mediated carbon cycling under ice cover and provide critical baseline data for predicting ecosystem responses to changing winter conditions in inland waters.

Limited Cu(II) binding to biochar DOM: Evidence from C K-edge NEXAFS and EEM-PARAFAC combined with two-dimensional correlation analysis

Jing Wei,Chen Tu,Guodong Yuan,Yongqiang Zhou,Hailong Wang,Jian Lu

Multiple spectroscopic technologies and chemometric analyses were combined to explore the compositional characteristics and Cu binding performance of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM). The DOM samples were extracted from biochars produced from lignocellulose-rich rapeseed cake (RSC) by pyrolysis at 300, 500, and 700 °C (i.e., RSC300, RSC500, RSC700). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and carbon K-edge near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) analyses were combined to elucidate the molecular-level C species in the DOM. With the increasing pyrolysis temperature, DOM aromaticity increased, whereas the proportion of metal complexing sites (e.g., carboxyl and phenolic groups) decreased. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) indicated that biochar DOM, irrespective of pyrolysis temperature, was mostly composed of three types of humic-like components (C1–C3), and a small amount of a protein-like component (C4). As charring temperature increased, DOM concentrations decreased substantially, but the humic-like C3 with abundant aromatic structures became predominant. Fluorescence quenching experiment and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) analysis suggested that the preferential Cu(II) binding fractions of the DOM were the humic-like substances. Moreover, the quenching curve fitting results for individual components indicated that despite the Cu(II) binding affinity was slightly enhanced as the pyrolysis temperature increased, the binding capacities of the four components decreased. In general, the DOM components from RSC biochar exhibited limited Cu(II) binding capacities (2.18–17.7 μmol L −1 ). Results from this study improved understanding of the mechanisms by which biochar DOM interacts with Cu, and provided tools for fast screening of biochars to reduce their environmental risks.

The effect of DOM on floc formation and membrane fouling in coagulation/ultrafiltration process for treating TiO2 nanoparticles in various aquatic media

Yangyang Sun,Yan Wang,Nan Xue,Cong Yu,Yingjie Meng,Baoyu Gao,Qilin Li

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) would absorb on nanoparticle (NP) surface and affect their fate, transport, bioavailability, toxicity and control. The study explored the removal of TiO 2 NPs as a function of DOM composition in coagulation/ultrafiltration membrane (UF) process by comparing the flocs properties and membrane fouling in different water samples (e.g. HA synthetic water (WATER SN ), surface water (WATER XQ ) and municipal wastewater (WATER MW ). The results showed that floc size of WATER SN increased with higher dosage and lower pH conditions. In contrast, the floc size of WATER MW decreased with increasing dosages while the floc size of WATER XQ was not affected by Polyaluminum Chloride (PAC) dosage and pH. TiO 2 NPs in WATER MW and WATER XQ aggregated to larger and looser flocs than those in WATER SN , probably due to the higher protein and larger molecules DOM fractions in WATER MW and WATER XQ . The floc properties in different water samples affected fouling behavior in ultrafiltration membrane following pre-coagulation. PAC (2   mg   L −1 ) could reduce 67% of external fouling resistance for WATER SN but only 20% for WATER MW . In addition, lower restricting internal fouling for WATER MW and WATER XQ was achieved by a pre-coagulation process.

New insight into wastewater treatment by activation of sulfite with humic acid under visible light irradiation

Yanting Pan,Feng Zhang,Wenfeng Tan,Xionghan Feng

Sulfite (S(IV)), as an alternative to persulfate, has demonstrated its cost-effectiveness and environmentally friendly nature, garnering increasing attention in Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). Dissolved organic matter (DOM) commonly occurred in diverse environments and was often regarded as an interfering factor in sulfite-based AOPs. However, less attention has been paid to the promotion of the activation of sulfite by excited DOM, which could produce various reactive intermediates. The study focused on the activation of sulfite using visible light (VL) - excited humic acid (HA) to efficiently degrade many common organic pollutants, which was better than peroxydisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) systems. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis revealed that the triplet states of HA ( 3 HA*) activated sulfite through energy transfer, resulting in the production of SO 4 •− , O 2 •− , and 1 O 2 . The most significant active species found in the degradation of roxarsone (ROX) was 1 O 2 , which was a non-radical pathway and exhibits high selectivity for pollutant degradation. This non-radical pathway was not commonly observed in traditional sulfite-based AOPs. Additionally, the coexistence of various inorganic anions, such as NO 3 − , Cl − , SO 4 2− , CO 3 2− , and PO 4 3− , had little effect on the degradation of ROX. Furthermore, DOM from different natural water demonstrated efficient activation of S(IV) under light conditions, opening up new possibilities for applying sulfite-based advanced oxidation to the remediation of organic pollution in diverse sites and water bodies. In summary, this research offered promising insights into the potential application of sulfite-based AOPs, facilitated by photo-excited HA, as a new strategy for efficiently degrading organic pollutants in various environmental settings.

Nano-bio interfacial interactions determined the contact toxicity of nTiO2 to nematodes in various soils

Jie Hou,Chao Hu,Yanlong Wang,Jianying Zhang,Jason C. White,Kun Yang,Daohui Lin

The biological effect of soilborne nanoparticles (NPs) is a manifestation of soil-NMs-bio interactions. Soil factors are known to restructure NPs surfaces and thus influence the nanotoxicity. However, the mechanisms by which environmental factors affecting nano-bio interactions to aggravate or alleviate nanotoxicities are poorly understood. Herein, we compared the toxicity of TiO 2 NPs (nTiO 2 ) in five soils using the model nematode ( Caenorhabditis elegans ), and investigated the variation of nano-bio interactions under different conditions. A correlation analysis showed that pH and dissolved organic matter (DOM) were dominant regulators of nTiO 2 toxicity. At the nano-bio interface, low pH (5.0) led to nTiO 2 adhesion to micron-sized furrows and aggravated dermal wrinkling, while humid acid (HA) alleviated these impacts. Mechanically, low pH increased nTiO 2 adhesion through enhanced electrostatic attraction and subsequent stimulation of mucin and collagen synthesis, resulting in a positive feed cycle of pH-dependent contact nanotoxicity. HA not only prevented nTiO 2 adhesion onto the epidermis due to its negative charge, but also relieved the overstimulation of stress response pathways, thereby alleviating nanotoxicity. These findings broaden our knowledge of how NPs induce contact toxicity in soil invertebrates through specific biointerfacial interactions, and highlight the important role of DOM in alleviating the combined hazards of NPs and soil acidification.

Molecular mechanisms of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) removal from sludge alkaline fermentation liquid by coagulation: Role of interactions between DOM and PFASs

Chengyu Gu,Sijia Ma,Yuan Lin,Yi Xue,Hongqiang Ren,Ke Xu

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), as highly recalcitrant pollutants, tend to accumulate in sludge, posing challenges for subsequent treatment and resource recovery. Sludge alkaline fermentation (SAF) produces sludge alkaline fermentation liquid (SAFL) with potential for circular-economy reuse, while simultaneously transferring PFASs from the solid phase into SAFL, thereby creating a trade-off between resource recovery and contamination. Coagulation is a critical step in SAFL separation, yet the fate of PFASs during this process remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the performance of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and polyferric sulfate (PFS) in removing nine representative legacy and emerging PFASs from SAFL. High removal efficiencies were achieved across PFASs with varying chain lengths and headgroups, with long-chain PFASs (C ≥ 8) reaching up to 74% and emerging short-chain PFASs (C < 8) up to 55%. Spectroscopic analysis indicated that the hydrophobic interaction between PFASs and the Al/Fe based hydrolysates were the primary driving force for the direct removal of PFASs by coagulants. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in SAFL played a facilitating role in PFASs removal, with proteins identified as the key contributors. DOM analysis revealed that additional coagulants facilitated the removal of protein-like substance and hydrophobic macromolecules that have strong affinities for PFASs. Molecular dynamics simulations suggested that Al/Fe-based hydrolysates increased electrostatic attraction and binding free energy, thereby increasing protein compactness and promoting co-precipitation removal of PFASs. These findings offer valuable insights for optimizing coagulation strategies in practical applications to effectively mitigate ecological risks in DOM-rich water contaminated with PFASs.

Insight into the binding characteristics of dissolved organic matter(DOM)and Fe(Ⅱ)/Mn(Ⅱ): Based on the spectroscopic and dialysis equilibrium analysis

Haishuo Wang,Xuefeng Ge,Shiyin Li,Heyong Huang

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in metal migration and transformation within inland surface waters . In our study, spectroscopic and dialysis equilibrium analysis were combined to characterize the binding properties between DOM and Fe(II)/Mn(II). Four different type of DOM including two commercial DOM: humic acid、fulvic acid, and two natural dissolved organic matter collected from macrophyte-dominant region (MDR) and algae-dominated region (ADR) of Taihu Lake. Steady state/time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy indicated that the fluorescence intensity of DOM was quenched by Fe(II)/Mn(II) through a static quenching process. The adsorption isotherm shows that the adsorption capacity of DOM from Taihu Lake for metal ions is significantly higher than that of commercial humic acid . Simultaneously, the combination of MDR and Fe(II) has the highest adsorption capacity at 110.950 mg/g among all combinations. Furthermore, the Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Elovich model were found to be superior in describing the adsorption process , with chemical adsorption controlling the rate of the adsorption reaction. The results of this study show that potentially toxic elements (PETs) pollution in eutrophic shallow lakes may become more serious due to the excessive expansion of algae dominant regions and the reduction of macrophyte dominant regions. In addition, risk analysis and assessment of PETs should consider the contribution of metal binding capabilities.

Characteristics of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) Combined with As in Fe-Rich Red Soils of Tea Plantations in the Southern Anhui Province, East China

Youru Yao,Juying Li,Kang Ma,Jingyi Zhang,Yuesheng Lin,Huarong Tan,Jia Yu,Fengman Fang

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is widely present in soil environments and plays a crucial role in controlling the morphology, environmental behavior, and hazards of arsenic (As) in soil. In the Fe-rich red soil of tea plantations, the decomposition of tea tree litter complicates DOM properties, leading to more uncertain interactions between DOM, Fe, and As. This study focused on three tea plantations in Huangshan City to investigate the contents of DOM, Fe, and As in surface red soils (Ferralsols) and establish their correlations. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy and PARAFAC analysis methods were used to analyze the DOM components and fluorescence signatures. Additionally, the process and mechanism of the binding of DOM-Fe with As were explored through laboratory experiments on the morphological transformation of As by DOM-Fe. The results showed that the pH values of the soils in the three tea plantations ranged from 3.9 to 5.2, and the entire sample was strongly acidic. The DOM exhibited strong intrinsic properties and low humification, containing three types of humic acid components and one intermediate protein component. The DOC content in the Fe-rich red soil did not have a direct correlation with Fe and As, but the interaction of DOM fractions with Fe significantly influenced the As content. Specifically, the interaction of protein-like fractions with Fe had a more pronounced effect on the As content. The maximum sorption rate of As by DOM was 15.45%, and this rate increased by 49 to 75% with the participation of Fe. In the configuration of the metal electron bridge, Fe acts as a cation, forming a connecting channel between the negatively charged DOM and As, thus enhancing the DOM’s binding capacity to As. DOM-Fe compounds bind As through surface pores and functional groups. These findings provide deeper insights into the influence of DOM on As behavior in Fe-rich soil environments and offer theoretical support for controlling As pollution in red soil.

Influence of DOM characteristics on the flocculation removal of trace pharmaceuticals in surface water by the successive dosing of alum and moderately hydrophobic chitosan

Zhangzheng Wang,Yunyun Li,Min Hu,Tao Lei,Ziqi Tian,Weiben Yang,Zhen Yang,Nigel J.D. Graham

Hydrophobically-modified chitosan (HC) has emerged as a promising flocculant for trace pharmaceutical removal from surface water. However, the variation in the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in different water sources influences the efficacy of HC in removing pharmaceutical compounds. In this work, the flocculation performance of sequentially dosing alum and HC (alum+HC) for the treatment of five water types (three synthetic waters, and samples of two real waters collected from the Yangtze River and the Thames River), having different DOM and five representative pharmaceuticals (initial concentration: 100 ng/L), was assessed by bench-scale jar tests. The DOM characteristics were correlated quantitatively with the removal efficiencies (REs) of the pharmaceuticals. Density functional theory computations were performed to illuminate the interfacial interactions in the flocculation. Alum+HC exhibited a remarkably higher RE of all five pharmaceuticals (maximum RE: 73%-95%) from all waters compared to a conventional coagulant or flocculant (alum or polyacrylamide, respectively). In contrast to using HC alone, alum+HC also achieved a higher RE of pharmaceuticals with nearly half the HC dosage, thereby enhancing the cost-effectiveness of the alum+HC dosing system. Among the different key DOM characteristics, the surface charge and molecular weight of DOM had no evident correlation with RE(pharmaceutical), but the hydrophobic/hydrophilic nature and functional group composition of organic carbon of DOM were strongly correlated: Strongly hydrophobic fractions, with C-C & C=C functional groups (binding pharmaceuticals via hydrophobic association), were beneficial, while hydrophilic fractions with C-OH groups were less effective, for pharmaceutical removal. This work showed the enhanced performance of the alum+HC dosing combination in the removal of different pharmaceutical compounds from different waters, and filled the knowledge gap regarding the performance of hydrophobically-modified flocculants in the treatment of different surface water sources.

Fractionation of carbon isotopes of dissolved organic matter adsorbed to goethite in the presence of arsenic to study the origin of DOM in groundwater

Zhang Yanan,Gan Yiqun,Yu Kai,Han Li

Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) in groundwater plays a crucial role in mobilizing arsenic (As). The complex contribution of DOM sources makes it hard to predict how the variation of environmental conditions would affect the distribution of As concentrations. Identifying the carbon isotope fractionation of DOM is the key to quantify DOM sources based on stable carbon isotopes. To understand the magnitude and variability in the carbon isotopic fractionation of DOM in competitive adsorption with As(V), this study investigated the δ 13 C values of fulvic acid (FA) and DOM during adsorption to goethite in the presence of As(V), at a specific pH and temperature. The carbon isotopic enrichment factor ( ε ) of FA in the adsorption to goethite was 0.65 ± 2.11‰ at pH 4.1, 25 °C, suggesting that FA molecules containing 13 C were more easily adsorbed to goethite. An increasing temperature increased ε FA from 0.32 ± 1.17‰ to 0.82 ± 5.39‰ at 15–35 °C. For dissolved sediment organic matter (DSOM) cases, molecules containing 13 C were more easily adsorbed to goethite. However, enrichment factors were not detected due to a reduction in DSOM adsorption and the diversity of natural humic substances or groups. The findings provide basic data for accurately ascertaining DOM sources through carbon isotopes, which is significant for predicting As fluctuation in aquifers affected by monsoon climate and/or human activities.
