Fruit rotting at the postharvest stage severely limits their marketing supply chains and shelf-life. Thus, developing a green and cost-effective approach to extend the shelf-life of perishable foods is highly desired. In this study, inspired by the mussel-adhesion strategy, a multifunctional fruit coating material has been developed using a quaternized catechol-functionalized chitosan (CQ-CS) grafted with 2, 3-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and 3, 4-dihydroxy benzaldehyde . The as-prepared CQ-CS coating exhibited excellent mechanical properties, universal surface adhesion abilities, antimicrobial and antioxidant capacities without any potential toxicity effects. Using strawberry and banana as model fruits, we showed that the CQ-CS coating could effectively maintain the fruit's firmness and color, decrease the weight loss rate, and prevent microbial growth , thus finally extending their shelf- life when compared to uncoated samples, indicating the universal application of the as-prepared CQ-CS coating. These findings demonstrated that this novel conformal coating of CQ-CS has great potential for fruit preservation in the food industry.

The growing concerns about microbial food safety and environmental contamination call for sustainable food active packaging materials and practices with high performance. This contribution proposed a biocatalytic spraying coating for fruit preservation using carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibers grafting enzyme-like metal-organic frameworks ( [email protected] ) with banana and mango as model fruits. The well-characterized biohybrid nanofibers were verified to simultaneously mimic good oxidase-like and apyrase-like activities, enabling effective enzyme-like sterilization against three typical foodborne pathogens, i.e. Escherichia coli O157: H7, Staphylococcus aureus , and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus , reaching killing rates as high as 90.46%. The biocidal •O 2 − generation and adenosine triphosphate depletion were the possible mechanisms causing the nonspecific bacteria death. Such antibacterial performance, as well as additional protective properties of [email protected] , facilitated the quality preservation during the 12-day storage of bananas and mangos by spray coating with the biomimetic [email protected] It is expected that this work walks out the first step of nanozyme toward active packaging engineering for the fields of food, agriculture, and biomedicine.

Context Hyperlipidemia is a highly prevalent risk factor for atherosclerosis and stroke. The currently available medications used to treat Hyperlipidemia cannot improve its oxidative stress damage. Consumption of hawthorn can regulate blood sugar and blood lipids, and its rich fruit acid is a natural antioxidant that can improve oxidative stress damage. Objective The present research aimed to investigate the protective effect of hawthorn fruit acid (HFA) on hyperlipidemia and to determine its potential molecular mechanism. Materials and methods Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) to induce hyperlipidemia and treated orally with hawthorn fruit acids (HFA). Serum and liver levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), superoxide dismutase (SOD), hydrogen peroxide (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured. Human hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines (HepG2) cells were treated with 0.1 mM oleic acid and HFA (0.125, 0.25 mg/mL), and intracellular TC, TG, HDL-C, SOD, CAT and MDA were measured. Changes in LDLR, HMGCR, Nrf2, HO-1, NQO1 protein and gene expression were analyzed by Western blot and qPCR. Results This study found that HFA treatment effectively reduced the level of triglyceride, cholesterol, and glucose, and attenuated hepatic steatosis in rats. Additionally, oxidative stress damage of rats was effectively reduced by treatment with HFA. Western blot and qPCR analysis indicated that HFA treatment inhibited fat accumulation in HepG2 cells by upregulating LDLR and downregulating HMGCR gene expression. HFA inhibits oleic acid (OA)-induced oxidative damage to HepG2 by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. Conclusion HFA administration can provide health benefits by counteracting the effects of hyperlipidemia caused by an HFD in the body, and the underlying mechanism of this event is closely related to the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway.

Botrytis cinerea is a necrotrophic fungus that causes severe losses of postharvest pepper fruit. Moreover, this fungus is indiscriminate, causing severe disease in a variety of plant species, thus isolation and identification of the individual strains are crucial for the development of strain specific antifungal agents. In this study, B. cinerea was isolated from naturally infected green pepper fruit and identified through morphological features, pathogenic symptoms and rDNA-ITS analysis. The antifungal potential of the food additive sodium dehydroacetate (SD) and plant natural product trans-2-hexenal (TH) against the isolated pathogen was then examined. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree analysis matched the isolated strain to B. cinerea strains previously isolated from infected sweet pepper in Pakistan, and homology alignment analysis showed that it was 100% homologous to strain NRCB07. In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that both SD and TH treatments strongly inhibited the growth of the isolated B. cinerea , SD had a concentration dependent effect, while TH had an obvious antifungal effect only at higher concentrations. Both SD and TH limited the progression of gray mold disease and reduced the weight loss and respiration rate of inoculated green peppers. Treated pepper retained higher levels of Vc, chlorophyll and total soluble solids. SD and TH also enhanced the activities of the antioxidant enzymes SOD, POD and CAT of pepper, which may be directly responsible for the delayed onset of gray mold disease. Taken together, these results suggest that SD and TH are potential antifungal agents against B. cinerea and can be considered for the health control of gray mold in postharvest green peppers.

Litchi is a kind of fruit with high nutritional value and delicious flavor. The presence of pesticides has become the main risk factors affecting the safety and quality of litchi, and their potential risk to consumers have generated much public concern. We therefore sought to investigate the multiple residues, and dietary risk assessment of pesticide in litchi. 37 pesticide residues in 268 litchi samples were monitored during May 2019 to August 2020, as well as chronic dietary exposure assessment for consumers. Of 268 samples (100%) that contained pesticide residues, up to 11 pesticides were positive simultaneously (only accounted for 0.4% of all), and at least 1 pesticide (accounted for 3.6%) in one individual litchi sample. Concerning the most frequently detected pesticide residues, pyraclostrobin was found in 76.1% of the samples analyzed. Nine fungicides were detected in 252 samples (94.0%) at levels ranging from detectable to 1412 μg/kg, and 92.9% of the samples tested contained thirteen insecticides at levels ranging from detectable to 2030 μg/kg. Residue of eight pesticides in 19.8% of the total samples exceeded their MRLs, indicating indiscriminate use of these pesiticides. One non-authorized pesticides, imidacloprid was found in 5.2% of the total samples. The dietary risk of exposure to 23 detected pesticides through litchi, based on ADI% ranged from 0% to 36.8%. The results show that despite a high occurrence of pesticide residues in litchi, it could not be considered a serious public health problem. Nevertheless, routine monitoring of pesticide residues in litchi is necessary to decrease the MRL-exceeding rate of the pesticide residues and ensure the quality and safety of litchi.

Fruits are excellent sources of essential vitamins and health-boosting minerals. Recently, regulation of fruit ripening by both internal and external cues for the improvement of fruit quality and shelf life has received considerable attention. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a kind of natural plant-derived polyphenol, widely used in the drug therapy and food industry due to its distinct physiological functions. However, the role of RA in plant growth and development, especially at the postharvest period of fruits, remains largely unknown. Here, we demonstrated that postharvest RA treatment delayed the ripening in tomato fruits. Exogenous application of RA decreased ripening-associated ethylene production and inhibited the fruit color change from green to red based on the decline in lycopene accumulation. We also found that the degradation of sucrose and malic acid during ripening was significantly suppressed in RA-treated tomato fruits. The results of metabolite profiling showed that RA application promoted the accumulation of multiple amino acids in tomato fruits, such as aspartic acid, serine, tyrosine, and proline. Meanwhile, RA application also strengthened the antioxidant system by increasing both the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the contents of reduced forms of antioxidants. These findings not only unveiled a novel function of RA in fruit ripening, but also indicated an attractive strategy to manage and improve shelf life, flavor, and sensory evolution of tomato fruits. Keywords:rosmarinic acid;fruit ripening;tomato;flavor quality;ethylene;antioxidant system

s To address the vulnerability of fruit during the storage period, an economical and green active film package is urgently required to extend the shelf life. In this work, a vanillin-derived dialdehyde (DV) was successfully synthesized, and further employed as the crosslink agent into chitosan matrix via the formation of Schiff base. The obtained film (CS-DV) with compact structure exhibited excellent stability, mechanical strength, barrier properties and bioactivities. The experimental results indicated that the tensile fracture stress was enhanced by 3.8 ∼ 4.5 times in comparison with pure chitosan (CS) film. Due to the contained DV molecules, the UV irradiation in range of 250 ∼ 400 nm was almost blocked by CS-DV films. Meanwhile, the diffuse of oxygen/water vapor across the CS-DV film were suppressed, preventing the dehydration and nutrient oxidation. Moreover, CS-DV films displayed high radical scavenging capacities, where the highest DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging ratios were evaluated to be 82.20% and 99.39%, respectively. In combination with their strong antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli , CS-DV film package could significantly extend the shelf life of raspberry fruits with high preservation efficiency. This bio-based film only consists chitosan and vanillin derivative without any additives, showing potential as packaging material for agricultural and food products.

Developing innovative packaging films is of great significance for extending the shelf-life of perishable fruit. In this study, we successfully synthesized antibacterial composites by incorporating Fe into reduced graphene oxides (rGO) and MoS2. The resulting rGO-MoS2-Fe2O3 composites demonstrated effective inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus. After investigating the antibacterial mechanism of rGO-MoS2-Fe2O3 composites, we utilized carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a film substrate to create CMC films infused with rGO-MoS2-Fe2O3 composites. The incorporation of rGO-MoS2-Fe2O3 composites decreased the light transmittance and hygroscopicity of CMC films, while greatly enhancing the mechanical properties of CMC films. To evaluate the practical applications of these rGO-MoS2-Fe2O3-based CMC films, we conducted a strawberry preservation experiment, which revealed that CMC films supplemented with 5 wt% rGO-MoS2-Fe2O3 exhibited exceptional performance in preventing weight loss and maintaining total titratable acidity levels in strawberries. These findings highlighted the promising potential of rGO-MoS2-Fe2O3-based CMC films for fruit preservation applications.

Recent progress showed the potential of glutamate to regulate stress responses by affecting phytohormones homeostasis , but much remains to be explored. To decipher the role of ethylene in glutamate-induced resistance to Alternaria alternata , ethephon application, ethylene perception inhibitor (1-MCP) experiment and ethylene measurement were pursued. Concurrently, temporal alteration in ethylene biosynthesis and signaling pathways were transcriptionally analyzed in tomato fruit. Our data exhibited that ethylene conferred tomato fruit susceptibility rather than resistance to Alternaria alternata . The enhanced resistance in glutamate treatment was related to decreased ethylene production during the early stages of interaction, accompanied by lower expression levels of SlACS1 , SlACS2 and SlACO1 relative to the control. Interestingly, 1-MCP induced amounts of resistance similar to that observed in glutamate treatment, while ethylene receptors ( SlETR3 and SlETR4 ), mitogen-activated protein kinase SlMPK3 and ethylene response factor SlERF1 were down-regulated by glutamate during infection. Collectively, antagonizing the ethylene biosynthesis or signaling might play a pivotal role in glutamate-induced resistance to the necrotrophic pathogen Alternaria alternata .

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries with the characteristics of highly stable structure and excellent safety, while the application is constrained by its inferior electrical conductivity and sluggish lithium-ion diffusion kinetics. Herein, H2Ti4O9 was prepared as a precursor, and it was wrapped with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the nitrogen and carbon sources. Then, the N-doped carbon-filled TiO2 nanocrystals (N-TiO2/C), which had a unique dragon fruit structure with TiO2 nanocrystals acting as seeds and carbon acting as the flesh, were successfully prepared from PVP-coated H2Ti4O9 by one-step heat treatment. It is noteworthy that four modification methods, including carbon filling, nanosizing, nitrogen doping, and morphological designing, are all accomplished simultaneously during this process. The N-TiO2/C composite exhibits an outstanding stable capacity of 444.6 mAh g–1 after 600 cycles at 1 A g–1, and it possesses a reversible capacity of 146.7 mAh g–1 at 5 A g–1. The superior electrochemical capacity can be attributed to the distinctive dragon fruit structure along with nitrogen doping and carbon filling. The ingenious modification strategy can extend to the investigation on the other oxide anode materials.

Dyeing and antibacterial properties of a natural dye extracted from Liriope platyphylla fruit applied on silk fabrics have been studied. The total phenolic content (1109.13±69.02 mg), total flavonoid content (530.60±89.44 mg), and total anthocyanin content (492.26±77.79 mg) were measured in 100 g fresh weight of L. platyphylla fruits. In addition, ten anthocyanins and four flavanols were identified in L. platyphylla fruits by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS). A broad variation in color shade and color depth can be achieved with mixtures of dye extracts and metal mordants. Purple, blue, and pale green were main color shades of silk fabrics dyed with the extracts. The fastness of dyed silk fabrics except for control dyed fabrics against light, washing, and rubbing were acceptable with at least a grey scale rating of 3. The antibacterial activities of L. platyphylla fruit extracts were retained on dyed silk fabrics even after home washing 30 cycles. Mordanting with metal salt mordant had a positive effect on antibacterial activity of dyed silk fabrics in this study. Among them, aluminum and copper were the most effective mordants for improving antibacterial activity of silk fabrics dyed with L. platyphylla fruit extracts. The costs of natural dyeing of per silk fabrics kg by the extracts from L. platyphylla fruit were also calculated on laboratory scale.

The traditional contact release active packaging film is easily restricted by the strict storage environment and designing a more intelligent release system to achieve lasting food preservation is still a challenge. Herein, a light-responsive thermal-controlled curcumin release packaging film was fabricated by integrating chitosan with Cu-MoO x and curcumin (CS/CMC). The addition of filler did not destroy the crystal structure and thermal stability of the chitosan matrix. CS/CMC film also possessed satisfactory visual identifiability (ΔE* ≥ 14.98), good light transmittance (T 660 ≥ 79.99 %), enhanced mechanical properties (≥ 48.21 MPa), and excellent barrier performance against ultraviolet light (T 280 ≤ 29.2 %), and water vapor (≤ 0.74 × 10 −10 g m −1 s −1 Pa −1 ). Additionally, CS/CMC film obtained superior photothermal performance from Cu-MoO x and exhibited good photothermal stability. Benefiting from the photothermal activity, CS/CMC film realizes the intelligent and controllable release of curcumin. The released curcumin and photothermal showed synergistic antibacterial ability with an antibacterial rate of 99.33 % for E. coli and 99.23 % for S. aureus based on CS/CMC 0.02 under near infrared (NIR) irradiation. Besides, CS/CMC 0.02 film could also efficiently inhibit P. italicum and P. expansum under NIR irradiation. Tangerine treated with CS/CMC 0.02 + NIR exhibited a longer shelf life and less nutrient loss than polyethylene (PE) film, verifying the good potential of CS/CMC 0.02 as packaging film. Our release active packaging film based on photothermal agent provides a new insight to designing contactless intelligent active packaging.
