Membrane distillation (MD) offers promise for recycling shale gas produced water (SGPW), while membrane fouling is still a major obstacle in standalone MD. Herein, sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidation was proposed as MD pretreatment, and the performance of the single MD, SPC-MD hybrid process and Fe(II)/SPC-MD hybrid process for SGPW treatment were systematically evaluated. Results showed that compared to raw SGPW, the application of SPC and Fe(II)/SPC led to the decrease of the fluorescent organics by 28.54 % and 54.52 %, respectively. The hydrophobic fraction decreased from 52.75 % in raw SGPW to 37.70 % and 27.20 % for SPC and Fe(II)/SPC, respectively, and the MD normalized flux increased from 0.19 in treating raw SGPW to 0.65 and 0.81, respectively. The superiority of SPC oxidation in reducing the deposited membrane foulants and restoring membrane properties was further confirmed through scanning electron microscopy observation, attenuated total reflection fourier transform infrared, water contact angle and surface tension analyses of fouled membranes. Correlation analysis revealed that hydrophobic/hydrophilic matters and fluorescent organics in SGPW took a crucial role in MD fouling. The mechanism of MD fouling mitigation by Fe(II)/SPC oxidation was attributed to the decrease in concentrations and hydrophobicity of organic by synergistic oxidation, coagulation and adsorption.

The performance of trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation by sodium percarbonate (SPC) activated with Fe(II) in the presence of 3.0 g/L sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as well as the role of SDS in the SPC/Fe(II) system was investigated since SDS is a common surfactant used in groundwater remediation for improving TCE dissolution to the aqueous phase. The results showed that though the introduction of SDS could inhibit the TCE degradation, the inhibiting effect was less with the increasing SDS dose. In the presence of SDS, TCE could be completely removed with the SPC/Fe(II)/TCE molar ratio of 40/80/1. Experiments with free radical probe compounds and radical scavengers elucidated that TCE was mainly oxidized by both HO· and . A weakly acidic environment was more favorable to TCE degradation. Nevertheless, at a high concentration had a strongly inhibitive effect on the TCE degradation but the influence of Cl − was negligible. Finally, the excellent TCE degradation achieved in actual groundwater demonstrated that Fe(II) activated SPC technique was applicable in the remediation of TCE contaminated groundwater in the presence of SDS. Practitioner points The effects of SDS were evaluated SPC/Fe(II)/SDS system applied to remediate TCE The mechanism of HO· and generation had been investigated Cl − and affected TCE degradation at different levels The performance of TCE removal in actual groundwater had been studied

Chlorinated aromatic chemicals are highly hazardous, transmissible, and bioaccumulative. Developing an economically feasible catalytic method to facilitate the effective removal of chlorinated aromatic pollutants is critical for contamination prevention. The current study extensively investigated the utilization of organic ligands such as citrate (CA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to increase Fe(II)-activated persulfate (PS) for 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and 3-chlorobenzoic acid (3-CB) degradation in water. The decomposition and consumption ability of persulfate in PS alone and Fe(II)/PS systems for 4-CP and 3-CB was very low because of the rapid utilization as well as discontinuous availability of Fe(II), which indicates the decline of Fe(III) to Fe(II). But, when using the citrate/Fe(II)/PS and EDTA/Fe(II)/PS combinations, the degradation of 4-CP and 3-CB was 78.86%, 75.01% and 84.84%, 80.99% within 30 min, respectively. The significant enhancement is due to both ligand-to-metal transfer of charges process, and this increased the process of rate determination through carrying electrons into the citrate and EDTA ligands to Fe(III), generating Fe(II). In addition, the 4-CP and 3-CB degradation facilitated with citrate/Fe(II)/PS and EDTA/Fe(II)/PS systems was efficiently degraded at acidic pH (2.0–6.0) conditions. The pseudo-first-order kinetics model accurately predicted 4-CP and 3-CB degradation in the organic ligand/Fe(II)/PS systems. The degradation percentage of 4-CP and 3-CB increased with increasing PS and Fe(II) concentrations. Moreover, both sulfate and hydroxyl radicals formed by citrate/Fe(II)/PS and EDTA/Fe(II)/PS systems were identified as major reactive oxygen species for 4-CP and 3-CB decomposition. The present investigation recommends an alternate strategy to enhance the Fe(II)-activated persulfate mechanisms.

Structural Fe(II/III) hydroxides on the shell of nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI) are reactive sites for As(III) adsorption. Well-controlled structural Fe(II) hydroxides (SFH) is prepared to serve for As(III) removal in present study. With oxygen As(III) removal by SFH occurred efficiently but the removal efficiency was greatly reduced under anoxic conditions. The mineral transformation from SFH to lepidocrocite probably contributed to the robust removal efficiency of As(III). It is found that Cu(II), Cr(VI) and NO 2 − in aqueous solution could act as oxidants and promote the mineral transformation of SFH. A more efficient As(III) removal was therefore observed without oxygen. The removal efficiency decreased in the order O 2 /SFH ≈ Cu(II)/SFH > Cr(VI)/SFH ≈ NO 2 − /SFH at near neutral pH. The removal efficiency was less dependent on the initial pH for O 2 /SFH and Cu(II)/SFH systems than Cr(VI)/SFH and NO 2 − /SFH systems. Distribution of As on solid phases was able to describe the removal mechanism of As(III), and the results showed that the mineral transformation promoted the precipitation process and inhibited outer-sphere complexation, thus leading to enhanced As removal. With Cu(II), Cr(VI) and NO 2 − , the generation of oxidants from SFH transformation drove As(III) oxidation, and contributed to total As removal.

Despite the success of Fe(II)/peroxymonsulfate (PMS) process in detoxifying organic pollutants, its intrinsic drawback of sluggish Fe(III) conversion to Fe(II) limits its large-scale practical application. Here we report that commercial MoS 2 , a common metal sulfide, can be used to unlock this kinetic constrain. Addition of MoS 2 greatly accelerates the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II), decomposition of PMS, and thus results in enhanced degradation efficiency of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) (>95%) and other biorefractory halogenated organic compounds within 30 min. Mass spectroscopy data indicate that TCP can be destructed into low-molecular-weight organic acids, manifesting its powerful oxidation capacity of MoS 2 -assisted Fe(II)/PMS process. Once the Fe(III) in aqueous solution is stabilized by its organic or inorganic ligands, the boosting effects of MoS 2 are largely inhibited and less than 80% of TCP is degraded. Sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals are identified as the dominant reactive oxidants in the MoS 2 /Fe(II)/PMS process by radical scavenging tests. The unsaturated S on the fresh MoS 2 surface and the exposed Mo(IV) sites are supposed to react with PMS and Fe(III) in the aqueous solution, respectively. No iron oxides and Mo oxides are detected in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurement, indicating the accelerated Fe(II)/PMS process mainly occurs in the homogeneous solution. MoS 2 exhibits excellent recyclability and sustainable reactivity for the degradation of TCP after 5 consecutive runs. Overall, the present study provides a novel strategy to overcome the rate-limiting step of Fe(III)/Fe(II) that is commonly challenging Fe-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and enable Fe(II)/PMS as efficient as typical Co(II)/PMS.

Fe(II) and Mn(II) are abundant in groundwater and require operationally simple and efficient method to remove in drinking water treatment. The rapid oxidation of Mn(II) is essential in water treatment. This study investigates the efficiency of Mn(II) oxidation by free chlorine in the presence of Fe(II). The results demonstrate that the presence of Fe(II) significantly accelerates the oxidation rate of Mn(II) by free chlorine under neutral and alkaline conditions. The rapid oxidation of Fe(II) by free chlorine and the presence of Mn(II) promote the formation of in situ Mn(II)-doped ferrihydrite. Kinetic modeling and characterization of Fe(III) oxides confirm that the heterogeneous catalytic effect of the Mn(II)-doped ferrihydrite, rather than manganese oxides or their coupled catalytic effect, is responsible for the enhanced oxidation rates. The doped Mn(II) substitutes the tetrahedral Fe(III) ions in the ferrihydrite, introducing additional negative charges at the doped sites. The increased charge enhances Mn(II) adsorption and lowers its redox potential, thereby accelerating Mn(II) oxidation rate through direct electron transfer with adjacent free chlorine. Additionally, the lepidocrocite formed by the reaction between Fe(II) and dissolved oxygen significantly impedes the catalytic performance. These findings provide new insights into the catalytic co-oxidation mechanism of Fe(II) and Mn(II), and help the optimization of water treatment engineering practices.

The treatment and disposal of sludge is a complex environmental problem because of the high moisture content. Herein, We reported the process of Fe(II) activating Urea hydrogen peroxide (UHP) to improve waste activated sludge (WAS) dewaterability for the first time. Fe(II)/UHP was proven to significantly improve WAS dewaterability. Specifically, under the optimal conditions with 60/35-Fe(II)/UHP mg/g TSS, the CST, SRF, and WC SC of WAS reduced from 215.3 ± 7.5s, 9.2 ± 0.32 (× 10 12 m/kg), and 92.2 ± 0.7% (control) to 62.3 ± 4.3s, 2.8 ± 0.09 (× 10 12 m/kg), and 70.4 ± 0.4%, respectively. Further analysis revealed that •OH was generated in the Fe(II)/UHP system and played the dominant role in enhancing WAS dewaterability. •OH was found to attack extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and cells, causing EPSs fragmentation and decomposition part of EPSs into micro-molecule organics or even inorganics, and leading to cell destruction, thus liberating the EPSs-bound and cells-bound water. •OH also degraded the protein in centrifugal liquor (CL) into micro-molecule organics such as amino acids, which could reduce the viscosity and electronegativity of CL. The above facts ultimately reduced solid-liquid interface interaction but increased hydrophobicity , flocculation , and flowability of WAS. Meanwhile, the broken WAS flocs were then re-flocculated via adsorption bridging and charge neutralization induced by Fe(II) and Fe(III). Moreover, Fe(II)/UHP treatment achieved the reduction and stabilization of heavy metals of dewatered sludge, which further enabled its land application. Finally, the Fe(II)/UHP process was found to be more attractive than the Fe(II)/persulfate, classical Fenton processes, and cPAM in terms of cost savings and practical implementation.

In this study, a matrix composite material of CdZnS and α-FeOOH on carbon cloth (CZS@FeOOH@CC) was prepared by a hydrothermal method , and was used for the degradation of As(III). The composite material has good photocatalytic activity of removing As(III) in the presence of oxalate. CZS@FeOOH@CC can completely degrade 10 mg/L As(III) within 10 min under visible light irradiation. The influence factors of CZS@FeOOH@CC composite material on catalytic oxidation of As(III) were also studied in the oxalate system. The photocatalytic oxidation efficiency of As(III) is affected by the oxalate concentration in the reaction system, and the atmosphere plays a major role in the degradation of As(III). Under visible light, oxalate first combines with Fe(III) on the surface of iron oxide to form Fe(III)-oxalate complex, and then the Fe(III)-oxalate composite is activated to produce·C 2 O 4 − . In the presence of oxygen, Fe(II) readily reacts with O 2 and oxidizes to Fe(III). The introduction of CdZnS promoted the separation of interfacial electron holes, and accelerated the REDOX cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III). This study provides a feasible and simple method for accelerating the catalytic removal of heavy metals from wastewater by iron-based materials.

Near-infrared electrochromic materials have garnered great attention due to their potential applications in optical data storage and military camouflage. Herein, a networked metal-organic coordination polymer bearing multi-redox centra ( Fe-MCP ) was successfully prepared by coordination interaction of Fe ions with D-A-D-structure ligands through the liquid-liquid interface self-assembly strategy. The resultant uniform film exhibits improved NIR electrochromic attributed to the construction of mixed-valence system. Furthermore, a sandwich-structured electrochromic device was fabricated by combining Fe-MCP electrochromic layer, a gel composed of LiClO 4 , PMMA , and PC as the electrolyte layer, and anodically coloring PB as an ion storage layer. The resultant device illustrated an optical contrast of 31.4 % at 800 nm and 34.2 % at 1000 nm, a response speed of 4.0 s/8.3 s at 800 nm and 7.6 s/2.7 s at 1000 nm, and good cycling durability. The design principles proposed in this study provide a new insight for the preparation of high-performance NIR electrochromic materials .

Phenol-polluted water poses significant risks, inflicting serious harm on both aquatic and terrestrial organisms. While Fenton and Fenton-like processes have been widely employed in wastewater treatment, their effectiveness is hindered by a major limitation: the sluggish cycle of Fe(III)/Fe(II). This slow cycle has become the Achilles' Heel of these methods, preventing their broader application. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was introduced to facilitate the generation of Fe(II) from Fe(III), enhancing peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation for pollutant degradation. The Fe(III)/GO/PDS system demonstrated effective pollutant degradation capability with 100 % treatment efficiency (phenol = 10 mg L −1 , GO = 50 mg L −1 , Fe(III) = 0.2 mM, PDS = 1 mM, and initial pH of 3). The radical-mediated oxidation mechanism was proposed based on radical scavenger effects, oxidation products, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra. The conversion of methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO) to methyl phenyl sulfone (PMSO 2 ) indicated the formation of Fe(IV) in Fe(III)/GO/PDS system. To reveal degradation rules for multiple substrates, eighteen molecular descriptors were calculated using density functional theory (DFT) and correlated them with degradation rate constants ( k ). BO n , E B3LYP , and F (−) x emerged as significant parameters in this relationship. The Fe(III)/GO/PDS system demonstrated excellent reusability during the first five runs, effectively treating contaminants. However, its performance was hindered by kinetic retardation when certain anions, such as phosphate and bicarbonate, were present. These findings contribute to both scientific understanding and technical development of persulfate activation via the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle using carbonaceous materials, particularly for environmental remediation applications.

Electrochemically mediated Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox-coupled uranium extraction can efficiently reduce the cell voltage of electrochemical uranium extraction (EUE). How to regulate the surface structure to enhance the uranium acyl ion adsorption capacity and strengthen the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle process is crucial for EUE. In this work, we developed surface sulfated nanoreduced iron (S-NRI) for EUE and exhibited improved properties for EUE at an ultralow cell voltage (−0.1 V). Compared with a nanoreduced iron (NRI) adsorbent, S-NRI displayed faster electrochemical extraction kinetics properties and higher extraction efficiency and capacity for uranium. In a more complex seawater electrolyte containing uranyl ion concentration ranging from 1 to 20 ppm, the removal efficiency could reach almost ∼100% after EUE for 24 h. At a higher 50 ppm uranium acyl ion concentration in a seawater electrolyte, S-NRI exhibited higher extraction capacity (755.03 mg/g), which is better than 528.53 mg/g of NRI at a cell voltage of −0.1 V. Outstanding EUE property could be attributed to the fact that sulfate species (M–SO42–) on the S-NRI surface not only enhanced selective adsorption of uranyl ions but also strengthened the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle, which accelerated electron transfer between Fe(II) and U(VI), promoted the regeneration of Fe(II) active sites, and finally enhanced the EUE property.

Fe(II) redox chemistry is a pivotal process of biogeochemical Fe cycle and the transformation of organic pollutants in subsurface aquifers, while its interfacial reactivity on iron oxides with varying surface chemistries remains largely unexplored. In this study, the redox processes of Fe(II) on two hematite with highly exposed {001} and {110} facets and their impacts on the transformation of nitrobenzene were investigated. Results suggest that Fe(II) adsorption is the rate-limiting step of the redox chain reactions, controlling the reduction potential ( E H ). Nitrobenzene activates the facet electron transfer on hematite, leading to nitrobenzene reduction and Fe(II) oxidation. Moreover, {001} facet exhibits a higher reactivity and electron transport efficiency than {110} facet, which is attributed to a lower site density (0.809 #Fe/nm 2 ) and a lower E H of hematite {001} facet than that of {110} facet. It is worth noting that the facet-dependent reduction activity is more intense at low pH or high Fe(II) activity. A slight dissolution of {110} facet was observed, indicating hematite {001} facet exhibits higher thermodynamic stability than {110} facet. This study confirms the facet-dependent reducing activity of surface bound Fe(II) on hematite, providing a new perspective for in-depth understanding of the interfacial reactions on hematite. The findings of this work broaden the biogeochemical process of Fe cycle in subsurface environments and its impact on the fate of organic pollutants in groundwater.
