Facile Synthesis of Fe@C Loaded on g-C3N4 for CO2 Electrochemical Reduction to CO with Low Overpotential

Lina Zhang,Ying Zhang,Baikang Zhu,Jian Guo,Dongguang Wang,Zhongqi Cao,Lihui Chen,Luhui Wang,Chunyang Zhai,Hengcong Tao

Electrochemical CO2 reduction has been acknowledged as a hopeful tactic to alleviate environmental and global energy crises. Herein, we designed an Fe@C/g-C3N4 heterogeneous nanocomposite material by a simple one-pot method, which we applied to the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (ECR). Our optimized 20 mg-Fe@C/g-C3N4-1100 catalyst displays excellent performance for the ECR and a maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 88% with a low overpotential of −0.38 V vs. RHE. The Tafel slope reveals that the first electron transfer, which involves a surface-adsorbed *COOH intermediate, is the rate-determining step for 20 mg-Fe@C/C3N4-1100 during the ECR. More precisely, the coordinating capability of the g-C3N4 framework and Fe@C species as a highly active site promote the intermediate product transmission. These results indicate that the combination of temperature adjustment and precursor optimization is key to facilitating the ECR of an iron-based catalyst.

Ultrasonic enhanced Fe-C/PDS system for sludge dewatering and carbon source release: synergy of oxidation and cracking processes

Wenye Li,Binghan Xie,Zhipeng Li,Guoyu Zhang,Zhiying Lv,Qinghao Li,Shuyu Zhao,Mu Tong,Yuanyuan Gao,Langming Bai

The effective dewatering of waste activated sludge (WAS) and the utilization of resources are crucial for the sustainable development of wastewater treatment plants. Ultrasonic (US) collaborative iron-carbon (Fe-C) activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) coupling system was constructed to investigate the transformation of physicochemical properties and explore the mechanisms during the cracking and oxidation of WAS. The ultrasonic enhanced Fe-C/PDS system, which exhibited excellent oxidation capacity under the conditions of PDS, Fe-C, and ultrasonic power levels at 0.12 g/g TS, 0.3 g/g TS, and 0.3 W/mL. The water content of the sludge cake was reduced to 61.71 %, while the specific resistance to filtration was lowered to 1.12 × 10 12  m/kg (decreased by 88.2 %). Furthermore, ultrasonic improved the WAS cracking capacity with a satisfying SCOD production (630.64 mg/L) and a dramatic reduction of 9.16 % in volatile solids. Compared to Fe-C/PDS, the addition of ultrasonic enhanced the leaching of Fe, released carbon source and promoted the formation of various reactive oxidative species to degrade bound EPS. The contribution of O 2 − and 1 O 2 was 37.00 % and 43.17 %, indicating the oxidation process of free radicals and non-free radicals in Fe-C/PDS/US system. Additionally, the concentration of short-chain fatty acids was increased by 96.7 %, which significantly accelerating the quality of carbon source suitable for recycling. The positive improvement of sludge physicochemical properties revealed the disintegration-degradation synergistic effect of the Fe-C/PDS/US systems. These findings provide a novel strategy for effective disposal and reduction in WAS while also offering valuable insights into resource utilization.

C nanofibers dotted with metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived square Fe@C crystals for enhanced electromagnetic wave absorption performance

Junhao Hu,Mengzhu Liu,Yuqi Zhai,Yongpeng Wang

C nanofibers dotted with square Fe@C crystals derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with a novel 3D hierarchical architecture were successfully prepared through electrospinning, hydrothermal processing, and high-temperature pyrolysis. The introduction of carbon nanofibers endowed the particles with directional action and mechanical support, inhibiting local agglomeration and the collapse of the Fe@C crystals. The unique overall 3D porous structure with micro-concavities on its surface provided sufficient paths for electromagnetic wave transmission, abundant heterostructured interfaces for interfacial polarization and a connected network for conductive loss. The appropriate combination of the magnetic Fe@C crystals with dielectric carbon nanofibers optimized the impedance matching. Benefitting from the ingenious design, the composites exhibited excellent electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) performances. FC1–30 was found to exhibit a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −28.09 dB at a thickness of 5.5 mm and a widest effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 1.1 GHz at a thickness of 2.5 mm. FC1–10 showed a RLmin of −20.82 dB at a thickness of 3.0 mm and a broadest EAB of 3.8 GHz at a thickness of only 1.5 mm. The preparation process was optimized, and the influence of the filler loading ratio on EWA performance was investigated. The EWA mechanism has been discussed in detail. The study provides an opportunity for the development of advanced electromagnetic devices with integrated structure and function.

Removal of trichloroethene by iron-based biochar from anaerobic water: Key roles of Fe/C ratio and iron carbides

Fanxu Meng,Zhenjie Li,Cheng Lei,Kun Yang,Daohui Lin

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) is widely studied for environmental remediation in recent years. However, its easy agglomeration, vulnerable oxidation, and runoff limit its practical application. Herein, iron-based lignin-derived biochar composites (Fe-LBC) with different Fe/C ratios were synthesized using a facile carbothermal reduction method and applied for trichloroethene (TCE) removal from anaerobic water. The synthesized Fe-LBC was equipped with higher specific surface area, more uniform nanoparticles distribution, and higher iron carbide content with the decrease of Fe/C ratio from about 1:5 (Fe-LBC 5 ) to 1:30 (Fe-LBC 30 ). TCE removal by Fe-LBC firstly increased as the Fe/C ratio increased from 1:10 6 to 1:10 3 , and then decreased with the Fe/C ratio further increased to 1:5. The removal efficiency remained largely stable (97.0–98.5%) within the Fe/C ratio range of 1:10 4 -1:30. Fe-LBC 30 (1.0 g L −1 ) could remove 97.4% of TCE (10.4 mg L −1 ), and owned the highest dechlorination efficiency (30.0%). Iron carbides but not Fe 0 could mainly contribute to the dechlorination. The quenching experiment reveals atomic hydrogen (H*) formed under the catalysis of iron carbides, and 1,2-dichloroethene was identified as the main degradation product derived from hydrogenolysis; electrochemical analyses suggest iron carbides could also serve as electron donors to TCE. Moreover, Fe-LBC 30 maintained excellent TCE removal efficiency in various water matrixes and pH range of 3–9, revealing its high application potential in practical groundwater remediation. This work firstly demonstrated the reductive dechlorination action of iron carbides rather than nZVI in iron-biochar hybrid materials, boosting our knowledge and potential application of iron-based materials.

Direct hydrogenation of CO2 to liquid hydrocarbons over K/Fe-C catalysts: Effect of porous carbon matrix and K modification

Xixi Chen,Ruxing Gao,Qiang Wang,Kehao Hu,Fenfen Wang,Chao Deng,Lujing Xu,Chundong Zhang,Ki-Won Jun,Seok Ki Kim,Tiansheng Zhao,Hui Wan,Guofeng Guan

Direct hydrogenation of CO 2 to liquid hydrocarbons via modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis represents an appealing and sustainable route for efficient CO 2 utilization. However, the selective production of liquid hydrocarbons remains a significant challenge. In this work, we designed a series of carbon-coated K/Fe-C catalysts with various K loadings (ranging from 0 to 8 wt%) that enhance C 5+ hydrocarbon selectivity during CO 2 hydrogenation. It is found that the 4 K/Fe-C catalyst exhibits the highest C 5+ selectivity of 54.78 % at CO 2 conversion of 32.40 % and good stability within 100 h time-on-stream. This is attributed to the high dispersion of the Fe nanoparticles and the confinement effect of porous carbon matrix on the aggregation of Fe nanoparticles, resulting in high catalytic activity and selectivity. Meanwhile, the well dispersed K on the porous carbon matrix can reduce the particle size of Fe nanoparticles and promote the production of iron carbide active species for CO 2 -FTS, thus facilitating the selective formation of C 5+ hydrocarbons. Moreover, we also discussed a possible reaction mechanism for the direct hydrogenation of CO 2 to C 5+ hydrocarbons over the K/Fe-C catalysts. This study provides deep insights into the design of efficient Fe-C catalysts for converting CO 2 to liquid hydrocarbons.

Fe3C/Fe/C Magnetic Hierarchical Porous Carbon with Micromesopores for Highly Efficient Chloramphenicol Adsorption: Magnetization, Graphitization, and Adsorption Properties Investigation

Jiangdong Dai,Sujun Tian,Yinhua Jiang,Zhongshuai Chang,Atian Xie,Ruilong Zhang,Chunxiang Li,Yongsheng Yan

Here, the magnetic hierarchical porous carbon (MHPC) with micromesopores was first prepared using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid tripotassium (EDTA-3K) and iron nitrate by simultaneous magnetization/activation method. The optimal product was MHPC-20 with a high graphitization, which possessed a large SBET (1688 m2 g–1) and saturation magnetization (3.679 emu g–1). As expected, MHPC-20 had a very high maximum adsorption capacity (534.2 mg g–1) toward chloramphenicol (CAP) from water solution at 298 K with a positive correlation between SBET and adsorption amount. Additionally, MHPC-20 had a fast adsorption kinetic, only 250 min, and isothermal and kinetics data were well fitted by Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, respectively. Moreover, the effect of ion strength, solution pH, and humic acid on CAP adsorption onto MHPC-20 were investigated, indicating a better stability. Besides, MHPC-20 showed good reusability and excellent magnetic separation performance, which implied MHPC-20 as a candidate could be applied in various complex wastewater environments.

Amorphous/Graphitic carbon phase engineering of Corrosion-Resistant Fe@C Core-Shell nanowires for optimized dipole polarization and enhanced microwave absorption

Ping-an Yang,Wenjiao Deng,Haibo Ruan,Zhengwei Qu,Rui Li,Lirui Wang,Jiufei Luo,Zhihao Zhou,Mengjie Shou,Xin Huang,Qiao Chen,Xinglong Gong

The study of designing and developing ferromagnetic nanocomposites with both microwave absorption (MA) and corrosion protection properties through microscopic heterogeneous interfacial engineering and crystal phase engineering remains challenging. In this study, Fe@C core–shell nanowires (FCNWs) are obtained by magnetic field-controlled in situ reduction method and annealing process to de-regulate the carbon shell thickness and carbon morphology. The enhancement of Fe-C heterogeneous relative interfacial effects and dielectric/magnetic response is revealed using density functional theory and simulated electromagnetic field distribution, and the modulation of the amorphous carbon/graphitic carbon ratio achieves the enhancement of dipole polarization in the low-frequency region. The FCNWs absorber had a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −47.6 dB at a thickness of 4.9 mm, and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max ) was achieved at 5.5 mm up to 4.0 GHz. In addition, the shielding effect of the graphitic carbon shell on the corrosion medium and the addition of additional electron conduction pathways allow the FCNWs absorber to obtain smaller corrosion currents and larger polarization resistances compared to Fe nanowires. Thus, modulation of atomic-scale heterogeneous interfaces and crystal phases has great potential in modulating the dielectric response.

Integrating large specific surface area and tunable magnetic loss in Fe@C composites for lightweight and high-efficiency electromagnetic wave absorption

Yujie Ren,Yinghan Zhang,Qi Zheng,Lianjun Wang,Wan Jiang

Porous Carbon-based composites with large specific surface area are promising as lightweight electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers due to their inherently rich interfaces that facilitate microwave attenuation. However, the exertion of the intrinsic advantage of large surface area was underexplored. Herein, we described a facile strategy using MOF-derived large surface area porous carbon to construct dielectric-magnetic composites for high-efficiency EMW absorbers. In particular, a series of Fe@C composites were fabricated by pyrolysis of MOF-5 to form porous carbon matrix (S BET  ∼ 1800 m 2 /g), followed by ferrocene deposition and reduction. By altering Fe species amount, surface area and electromagnetic parameters of the composites were tuned. It is found Fe@C-0.6 composites with sufficiently high S BET ∼915.8 m 2 /g exhibited outstanding microwave absorption performance with the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −64.6 dB (1.98 mm thickness and 15 wt% loading) and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) up to 6.27 GHz (2.2 mm thickness). Besides, Fe@C-1 (S BET ∼820.1 m 2 /g) also achieved desirable loss capability, with EAB covering the whole Ku band . This work demonstrates the potential of high surface area to achieve optimal EMW attenuation, and may provide a facile alternative to develop more high-performance carbon composites for EMW absorption application.

Kirkendall effect enhanced sustained-release Fe-C composites for long-term reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene: Interfacial reactions and slow-release degradation

Daibing Hou,Xuedan Cui,Yiming Tang,Meng Liu,Hantong Qie,Pengjie Zhao,Wenpeng Leng,Nan Luo,Huilong Luo,Wenxia Wei,Aijun Lin,Tianwen Zheng

Rebounding and lagging during the process of remediating contaminated sites are challenging problems. A potential solution is developing slow-release materials that could assist in the long-term remediation of contaminated sites. This study synthesised a slow-release Fe-C composite (CSBC-nZVI@β-CD), which exhibits a synergistic effect of encapsulated layers and nanocracks, using a liquid-phase reduction method. Furthermore, the reduction and dechlorination mechanism of trichloroethene (TCE) was systematically investigated. The introduction of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) intensified the Kirkendall effect, forming nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) with abundant radial nanocracks and a litchi-like appearance on the biochar surface. Additionally, β-CD created an encapsulation layer measuring 5–7 nm on the surface of nZVI, improving its electron transport capacity and hydrophobic properties. The CSBC-nZVI@β-CD nanocomposite successfully removed 99 % of TCE in solution within 2 h and accomplished a degradation efficiency of 98.9 % within 15 d. The synergistic effect of the β-CD encapsulating layer and nanocracks facilitated the reactivity and electron-retarding capacity, resulting in a broad pH tolerance and anti-interference ability. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental methods were used to study the mechanism of TCE reduction dechlorination; the unique structure of β-CD tended to bind with Fe as well as adsorb TCE, thereby facilitating electron transfer and the enrichment of TCE at the reaction interface. In addition, the sustained-release Fe-C composites reduced the bonding energy required during the TCE degradation reaction and promoted the complete reaction of the product. Overall, CSBC-nZVI@β-CD exhibited significant potential for the long-term remediation of groundwater.

Highly effective iron–carbon–bentonite–alginate beads (Fe°/C-BABs) as catalyst to treat benzalkonium chloride in fixed-bed column systems

Bing-huang Wang,Qian Zhang,Jun-ming Hong,Ling Li

Novel iron–carbon–bentonite–alginate beads (Fe°/C-BABs) were successfully prepared with the ion-gelation method and demonstrated high activities in persulfate activation for benzalkonium chloride (BAC) oxidation. The beads were measured in terms of size, mass, and Fe content and then characterized via scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The performance of Fe°/C-BABs as filler was evaluated in a continuous fixed-bed with paralleled PS and BAC feeding. The effects of initial PS (100 mM) concentration, pH (3–11), fixed bead weight (10–30 g), and flow rate (225-540 mL h −1 ) were investigated. Results indicated that the Fe°/C-BABs effectively activated PS to treat BAC in the solution. The optimal conditions for the degradation of BAC were pH 7.0, [BAC] = 50 mg L −1 , [PS] = 100 mM, bead weight = 30 g, PS flow rate = 25 mL h −1 , and BAC flow rate = 225 mL h −1 ; the removal rate of BAC reached 93.3%.The economic cost analysis was carried out under the optimal experimental conditions. To deeply understand the degradation mechanism of pollutants, the intermediates of BAC degradation were analyzed via gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis, and a degradation path pathway was proposed.

Aryl triflate is a type of facile and readily available compounds, which could be used as an alternative substrate for Suzuki cross coupling. In this manuscript, a novel ppm-Pd-Fe/C catalyst has been developed by reduction of palladium acetate and iron trichloride with aqueous hydrazine in situ and supported on activated charcoal. In combined with Sphos, and metal zinc as additives, this catalyst, with 300 ppm palladium loading, could be applied in the Suzuki cross coupling between aryl triflates with aryl neopentylglycolboronates.

Cu-Fe@C dual-mode sensing platform: ratiometric electrochemistry combined with pre-incubation-activated colorimetry for self-calibrated detection of ascorbic acid

Guangping Ma,Li Tian,Pengfei Han,Wenzhuo Wang,Hanyue Jiang,Ruixin Li,Huiyuan Mao,Tengying Ma,Juan Lu,Jing Wang

Construction of an electrochemical/colorimetric dual-mode sensing platform. • Ratiometric electrochemical method using methylene blue as an internal reference. • Pre-incubation strategy to activate the peroxidase-like activity of Cu-Fe@C. Ascorbic acid (AA) is an essential biomarker involved in numerous physiological processes, accurate and reliable detection remains a challenge. Herein, we constructed a novel dual-mode sensing platform integrating ratiometric electrochemical detection with pre-incubation-activated colorimetric sensing based on Cu-Fe@C (where ‘@C’ denotes the carbon matrix derived from the carbonization of the copper‑iron metal-organic framework, Cu-Fe-MOF) for self-calibrated AA detection. In the electrochemical mode, Cu-Fe@C exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward AA oxidation, while methylene blue (MB) loaded on mesoporous carbon spheres (MCS) provided a stable internal reference peak at −0.2 V, enabling ratiometric analysis with a linear range of 2.0–720.0 μmol·L −1 and a detection limit of 0.67 μmol·L −1 (S/N = 3). In the colorimetric mode, pre-incubation with AA reduced Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ in Cu-Fe@C to Fe 2+ and Cu + , activating its Fenton-like activity to catalyze the H 2 O 2 -TMB (3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine) system, producing a color response with a linear range of 1.0–79.0 μmol·L −1 and a detection limit of 0.33 μmol·L −1 (S/N = 3). The dual-mode configuration provides built-in cross-validation between two independent detection channels, substantially enhancing detection reliability. The sensor was successfully applied to AA determination in green tea and orange juice samples with recoveries of 93.5%–104.8%, demonstrating its practical utility for real-sample analysis. Scheme 1.
