Degradation and mineralization of methylene blue using a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst under visible and solar light irradiation

Yunus Ahmed,Zahira Yaakob,Parul Akhtar

A SiO2-supported Fe and Ni bimetallic catalyst has been synthesized, characterized and, for the first time, tested as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst for the degradation and mineralization of methylene blue (MB) dye. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of this catalyst were analyzed using FESEM, XRD, FTIR and UV–vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic degradation of MB has been investigated using Fe–Ni/SiO2 catalysts under visible and solar light irradiation in aqueous solutions. The effects of solution pH, H2O2 concentration, initial MB concentration, catalyst dosage and light intensity on the degradation of MB have been systematically investigated. An almost complete degradation was achieved within 60 min with a solution pH of 3.00, a H2O2 concentration of 3.0 mM L−1 and a catalyst dose of 0.85 g L−1. The degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiencies were 99.80% and 86.19%, respectively, for sunlight. However, the values were only 99.01% and 75.71% for visible light. These results suggested that Fe–Ni/SiO2 possesses significant catalytic activity, and the solar-Fenton process is a feasible method for degrading and mineralizing the MB dye compared with artificial visible light. The catalytic action is attributed to H2O2 and the formation of hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) by Fe(III) in Fe–Ni/SiO2via the photo-Fenton reactions. Furthermore, we determined that the catalyst activity can be replicated in successive experiments without a significant decline in the Fe–Ni/SiO2 and H2O2 processing efficiency under light irradiation. Our results will be useful for future improvement of active heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts for developing organic dye-containing wastewater treatments.

A Novel Preparation Approach of Mo2(Fex, Ni1–x)B2 Solid Solution Powders

Yang Xiao-Hui,Wang Ya-Long,Zhang Guo-Hua

Mo 2 FeB 2 -based cermets exhibit promising industrial manufacturing applications due to their excellent mechanical properties, higher oxidation resistance, and thermal stability. In this study, ternary boride solid solution powders of Mo 2 (Fe x , Ni 1– x )B 2 were successfully prepared with a unique technique via employing B 4 C powder as a boron source, Mo, Fe, and Ni powders as metal sources as well as Ca powder as the decarburization agent. The effect of the Fe/Ni ratio on the phase composition, morphological evolution and average grain size of powders was studied. The shift of diffraction peak in the XRD results and the homogeneous distributions of Mo, Fe, Ni, and B by the EDS energy spectrum validated the successful synthesis of ternary boride solid solution powders. The morphology of solid solution powders varied depending on the Fe/Ni ratio. For compositions with Fe/Ni ratios of 10 : 0, 7 : 3, and 5 : 5, the ternary solid solution powders exhibited pronounced spherical grains with average grain sizes of approximately 3, 1, and 1 μm, respectively. Conversely, when the Fe/Ni ratios were 3 : 7 and 0 : 10, the solid solution powders exhibited mixed morphologies of spherical (with diameters of approximately 1 μm) and prismatic grains (with lengths of about 8 μm and diameters of around 3 μm), corresponding respectively to the tetragonal and orthorhombic crystal structures of Mo 2 NiB 2 . Using ultrafine Mo powder as a raw material to boost reaction kinetics resulted in the product's stable phase being orthorhombic Mo 2 NiB 2 . Nonetheless, at a Fe/Ni ratio of 3 : 7, the product still consisted of orthorhombic and tetragonal Mo 2 NiB 2 phases.

Spin state modulation on dual Fe center by adjacent Ni sites enabling the boosted activities and ultra-long stability in Zn-air batteries

Canhui Zhang,Xingkun Wang,Zhentao Ma,Hanxu Yao,Hengjun Liu,Cheng Li,Jian Zhou,Ren Xu,Xusheng Zheng,Huanlei Wang,Qiang Li,Meng Gu,Heqing Jiang,Minghua Huang

Breakthrough in developing cost-effective Fe-based catalysts with superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activities and ultra-long-term stability for application in Zn-air batteries (ZABs) remain a priority but still full of challenges. Herein, the neighboring NiN 4 single-metal-atom and Fe 2 N 5 dual-metal-atoms on the N-doped hollow carbon sphere (Fe/Ni-NHCS) were deliberately constructed as the efficient and robust ORR catalyst for ZABs . Both theory calculations and magnetic measurements demonstrate that the introduction of NiN 4 provides a significant role on optimizing the electron spin state of Fe 2 N 5 sites and reducing the energy barrier for the adsorption and conversion of the oxygen-containing intermediates, enabling the Fe/Ni-NHCS with excellent ORR performance and ultralow byproduct HO 2 − yield (0.5%). Impressively, the ZABs driven by Fe/Ni-NHCS exhibit unprecedented long-term rechargeable stability over 1200 h. This work paves a new venue to manipulate the spin state of active sites for simultaneously achieving superior catalytic activities and ultra-long-term stability in energy conversion technologies.

Multihybridization for Enhancing Fe-Ni Bimetal Electrocatalyst in Water Oxidation

Hongyan Zhang,Hao Zhou,Hua Wang,Yikai Wang,Xuehan Yang,Dan Wu,Pan Yuan,Maoshuai He,Wenxian Wei,Tao Yang

Water electrolysis holds the promise of transforming electric-power into hydrogen energy through a carbon free process and its widespread application highly depends on anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) efficiency. Transition metal-based OER catalysts meet the requirements of long-term development for cost effectiveness, and their performance can be improved by a variety of band electronic structure modulating methods. Herein, a multihybridization strategy is proposed, i.e., p-d, s-sp , and d-d hybridization are emphasized together, which guides the design of an effective vanadium (V), boron (B)-FeNiP catalyst. Density functional theory analysis reveals the existence of multihybridization and the difference between Fe and Ni in terms of hybridization strength, band configuration, and interfacial charge transfer. Specially, Fe and Ni sites are simultaneously optimized to their highest performance upon the dual B, V incorporation. As a result, the VB-FeNiP catalyst displays outstanding OER performance, regarding a Tafel slope of 57.64 mV dec −1 , an overpotential of 175 mV at 100 mA cm −2 , and exceptional stability. Here the synergistic effect of multihybridization in the design of transition metal-based catalysts is highlighted and the work in pursuit of effective way based on regulating band configuration to developing high performance OER catalysts would be evoked.

Boosting Amination of 1-Octanol to 1-Octylamine via Metal-Metal Oxide Interactions in NixFe1/Al2O3 Catalysts

Shiqing Wang,Xiaocheng Lan,Boyang Liu,Babar Ali,Tiefeng Wang

Graphical Octylamine synthesis : Ni x Fe 1 /Al 2 O 3 was used as catalyst for 1-octanol amination and provided the highest yield among the reported nonprecious metal catalysts. The generation of Ni−FeO x interactions provided sufficient Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ −O 2− sites for the activation of 1-octanol. Meanwhile, the cooperation between Ni site and Lewis acid-base pairs significantly enhanced the amination of 1-octanol to 1-octylamine. The synthesis of 1-octylamine, a primary platform molecule, remained a great challenge in catalysis. In this work, Ni x Fe 1 /Al 2 O 3 was used for direct amination of 1-octanol to 1-octylamine. Catalyst evaluation indicated that the promotion effect of Fe/Ni ratio on the catalytic amination activity followed a volcano curve while the selectivity to 1-octylamine was positively correlated with the Fe loading. Compared with the Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst, the amination activity was increased by 2.8 times by optimizing the Fe/Ni ratio to 0.33, and the selectivity to 1-octylamine was increased from 84.0 % to 96.3 % when increasing the Fe/Ni ratio from 0 to 1. Based on catalyst characterizations, the good performance of Ni x Fe 1 /Al 2 O 3 was ascribed to the combined modification effect of the NiFe alloy and Ni−FeO x interface. The FeO x species enriched on the Ni particle surface provided sufficient Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ −O 2− sites for the activation of 1-octanol, and the cooperation between Ni sites and Lewis acid-base pairs enhanced the amination of 1-octanol to 1-octylamine. This work sheds new light on the design of Ni-based catalysts without using a noble metal for primary amine preparation.

CeO2-confined Ni-Fe alloy enhanced high-temperature CO2 hydrogenation to CO

Bowen Lu,Ziqiang Han,Xinyu Zhi,Liqi Zhang

NiFe 2 O 4 exhibits excellent redox properties and is widely applied in catalytic reactions. However, rapid inactivation under reaction conditions limited its industrial applications. In this study, CeO 2 -NiFe 2 O 4 composite catalysts were synthesized, and the Reverse Water Gas Shift (RWGS) reaction was measured to reveal its CO 2 hydrogenation performance under a high-temperature condition. NiFe 2 O 4 catalysts got deactivated after being reduced to Fe-Ni alloy at 700 °C, decreasing the CO 2 conversion rate. CeO 2 addition can significantly improve its high-temperature activity, and 20CeO 2 -NiFe 2 O 4 exhibited the best catalytic activity (80.85 %, 700 °C). The CeO 2 -confined maintained Ni-Fe alloy with a relatively small crystal size and larger specific surface area, supporting more active sites for CO 2 hydrogenation. CeO 2 addition induced higher oxygen vacancy concentration, enhancing CO 2 activation and formates species formed on 20CeO 2 -NiFe 2 O 4 , resulting in higher CO 2 conversion activity. In addition, 20CeO 2 -NiFe 2 O 4 maintained its catalytic stability for 50 h at 700 °C. The CeO 2 confined enhanced the high-temperature stability of Fe-Ni alloy. CeO 2 and formed CeFeO 3 dispersed in 20CeO 2 -NiFe 2 O 4 inhibited excessive aggregation of Fe-Ni alloy, and CeO 2 inhibited carbon deposition on Fe-Ni alloy, improving Fe-Ni alloy’s reaction stability under RWGS reaction conditions. CeO 2 confined may give insight into improving metal stability under high-temperature and reductive conditions in heterogeneous catalysis.

Toward High Corrosion Resistivity and High Efficiency in Seawater Oxygen Evolution: The Synergy of Fe and Ni Dopants in Co Layered Double Hydroxide Ultrathin Nanosheets

Luo Cheng,Dandan Cai,Yu He,Shipeng Geng,Yi Wang,Shuqin Song

The development of efficient, robust, and cheap electrocatalysts for the seawater oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance but still faces huge challenges. Herein, Fe and Ni synergistically substituted Co layered double hydroxide (LDH) ultrathin nanosheets (Co0.24Ni0.50Fe0.26 LDH, 1.2 nm thickness) have been rationally designed and successfully prepared by the etching and precipitation method. The electronic structure of CoxNiyFez LDH could be regulated by both Fe/Co/Ni cations and sulfate anions. The as-obtained Co0.24Ni0.50Fe0.26 LDH exhibits significant OER activity and stability in alkaline simulated seawater, requiring overpotentials of only 214 and 265 mV to drive current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm–2, respectively, along with a small Tafel slope of 53.34 mV dec–1. The as-optimized Co0.24Ni0.50Fe0.26 LDH catalyst with rationally selected cations (Fe2+ or Ni2+) and intercalated anions (SO42–) could be continuously stable for 72 h at an ultrahigh current density of 500 mA cm–2, suggesting its strong corrosion resistance. Theoretical calculations indicate that the LDH catalyst with Fe/Co/Ni ternary elements can optimize the adsorption capacity of *O intermediates, ultimately reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step of the OER. The excellent activity and stability could be attributed to the synergistic effect of Fe/Co/Ni, more catalytic sites of ultrathin nanosheets, and chlorine repulsion of intercalated polysulfate anions. The present study provides a novel strategy to design robust OER electrocatalysts for industrial seawater electrolysis.

Enhanced nitrate removal by novel bimetallic Fe/Ni nanoparticles supported on biochar

Pengjun Li,Kairong Lin,Zhanqiang Fang,Kangming Wang

In this study, a novel bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles supported on biochar (BC@Fe/Ni) was established to degrade nitrate pollution in water. The nanocomposite was prepared from steel pickling waste liquor and sugarcane bagasse, which are made at low cost. The particle sizes of the nanocomposite ranged from about 10 nm to 20 nm and its specific surface area (59.83 m 2 /g) was about 71% bigger than that of nanoscale zero valent iron prepared from steel pickling waste liquor (S-NZVI), which proved that biochar had an excellent dispersal effect on bimetallic iron/nickel particles. Without controlling the pH, high nitrate removal rates over 93% could be realized in nitrate concentrations below 50 mg/L. The results of batch experiments demonstrated that the kinetics curves fitted the pseudo-first-order reaction well. And it was also found that higher dosages of the nanocomposite, lower initial nitrate concentrations, and acid medium facilitated nitrate degradation. In addition, the observed pseudo-first order rate coefficient in nitrate (20 mg/L) degradation rate by 4 g/L of the bimetallic iron/nickel supported on biochar was 30% faster than that by 2 g/L the bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles , due to the existence of biochar. And it was 75% faster than that by 2 g/L the nanoscale zero valent iron due to the existence of both biochar and the nanoscale zero valent nickel catalyst. Furthermore, iron and nickel ion pollution occurred in the denitrification system with bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles but not in that with the bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles supported on biochar, due to the biochar’s adsorption. After denitrification by the bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles supported on biochar, most of nitrate turned into ammonia (17.04 mg/L) and there only was a small amount of nitrite (0.024 mg/L) with high nitrate removal rate (99.5%). And most of ammonia can be absorbed by cation exchange resin with finial ammonia concentration of 0.58 mg/L. At last, the concentrations of nitrate (0.24 mg/L), nitrite (0.021 mg/L), and total nitrogen (0.84 mg/L) were lowest in the nanocomposite system. Overall, the bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles supported on biochar exhibited clear advantages over bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles and nanoscale zero valent iron with respect to degrading nitrate efficiently, preventing iron and nickel pollution and removing ammonia pollution in combination with cation exchange resin .

Preparation of Fe/Ni-MOFs for the Adsorption of Ciprofloxacin from Wastewater

Fuhua Wei,Kui Wang,Wenxiu Li,Qinhui Ren,Lan Qin,Mengjie Yu,Zhao Liang,Meng Nie,Siyuan Wang

This work studies the use of Fe/Ni-MOFs for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in wastewater. Fe/Ni-MOFs are prepared by the solvothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and a thermal gravimetric analyzer (TG). Under the conditions of the concentration of 50 ppm, a mass of 30 mg, and a temperature of 30 °C, the maximum adsorption capacity of ciprofloxacin removal within 5 h was 232.1 mg/g. The maximum removal rate was 94.8% when 40 mg of the Fe/Ni-MOFs was added to the solution of 10 ppm ciprofloxacin. According to the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model, the R2values were all greater than 0.99, which proved that the adsorption theory of ciprofloxacin by Fe/Ni-MOFs was consistent with the practice. The adsorption results were mainly affected by solution pH and static electricity, as well as other factors. The Freundlich isotherm model characterized the adsorption of ciprofloxacin by Fe/Ni-MOFs as multilayer adsorption. The above results indicated that Fe/Ni-MOFs were effective in the practical application of ciprofloxacin removal. Keywords:metal–organic frameworks;antibiotics;adsorption

Air-Calcined Fe/Ni-Based Metal–Organic Framework Nanosheets for Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Shengkang Zhang,Yu Xiao,Qiwei Feng,Ziqiang Lei

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a pivotal role in the hydrolysis process of zinc–air batteries. Consequently, it is essential to develop cathode catalysts with both cost-effectiveness and high oxygen evolution activity. In this study, we synthesized the FeFFIVE-1-Ni two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosheets via a straightforward solvothermal approach and oxidized them in an air atmosphere. During the calcination process in an air atmosphere, the heteroatoms (O, F) within the FeFFIVE-1-Ni 2D MOF nanosheets combine with iron and nickel metal ions, forming FeOF and NiF2 compounds. The synergy between these compounds and the creation of surface cracks during calcination yield catalytic active power and catalytic active sites essential for the oxygen evolution reaction. Notably, the overpotential of FeFFIVE-1-Ni 2D MOF nanosheets calcined in air under alkaline test conditions (η10 = 286 mV) was lower than that of commercial RuO2 catalysts (η10 = 355 mV). This work presents an effective strategy for replacing noble metal catalysts such as RuO2 by simply treating fluorinated metal–organic frameworks.

Biomass-Derived Fe–Ni Alginate Hydrogel Electrodes for Sustainable Nitrate Upcycling to Ammonia

Jinjie Lin,Ce Gao,Xianhong Wu,Nan Wu,Run-Cang Sun

Abstract The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3–RR) provides a sustainable and carbon-efficient strategy for ammonia (NH3) production, a vital industrial feedstock. However, the development of efficient electrocatalysts remains a significant bottleneck hindering its practical advancement. In alkaline media, effective electrocatalysts should not only activate nitrate but also promote water dissociation to supply proton equivalents for ammonia formation. Herein, we report the innovative application of sodium alginate (SA) hydrogels as a monolithic electrode for NO3–RR. The Fe3+ and Ni2+ ions coordinate with the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in the sodium alginate to form a stable 3D porous network structure (FeNi/SA). In this structure, Ni sites promote water dissociation, whereas Fe sites facilitate nitrate reduction; the cooperation between these dual active sites accelerates ammonia formation. Consequently, the FeNi/SA hydrogel exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic performance, requiring potentials of only 0.0579 and –0.34 V (vs RHE) to achieve current densities of –10 and –100 mA cm–2, respectively. Notably, it delivers a high ammonia yield rate of 7.745 mg h–1 cm–2 with an impressive Faradaic efficiency of 93.79%. Experiment and density functional theory calculations results indicate that Ni sites promote the generation of *H and modulate the electronic structure of Fe, lowering the energy barrier for the critical *NO to *NOH transition and accelerating NH3 formation. Furthermore, integrating the NO3–RR process with an air-stripping system enables the efficient recovery of NH4Cl, offering a viable pathway for converting nitrogenous waste into high-value products. This work highlights the potential of hydrogel-based materials as a new frontier for robust nitrate-to-ammonia conversion.

Improved properties of Fe-Ni-Mo soft magnetic composites via particle surface modification

Qi Li,Zhangqiao Zhou,Yan Nie,Lu Yang,Yu Wang,Jinsong Chen,Xian Wang

The preparation of soft magnetic composites requires effective surface modification of alloy powder to enhance insulating properties and achieve dense, uniform coating layers. Firstly, the gas-atomized Fe-Ni-Mo powder was surface modified using the atomic layer deposition method, forming a uniform and dense Al 2 O 3 insulating layer. The secondary surface modification of organic polymers further improves the properties of soft magnetic composites. This study systematically evaluates the effects of the primary and secondary surface modification on the properties of powder particles and soft magnetic composites. The primary modification generates an extremely thin insulating layer of approximately 2.5 nm, which increases the particle resistivity by 9 orders of magnitude. The permeability frequency stability of the soft magnetic composites increased from 11.3 % to 96.5 %, resulting in significant core loss reduction. The secondary modification effectively enhances the formability of soft magnetic composites. Optimal permeability of 242.7 at 1 kHz is achieved, maintaining 95.2 % frequency stability up to 1 MHz, while core loss remains below 570 mW cm −3 under 100 kHz/100 mT conditions. The surface treatment method in this work can provide a reference for the surface insulation modification of soft magnetic composites.
