V2C MXene synergistically coupling FeNi LDH nanosheets for boosting oxygen evolution reaction

Yafeng Chen,Heliang Yao,Fantao Kong,Han Tian,Ge Meng,Shuize Wang,Xinping Mao,Xiangzhi Cui,Xinmei Hou,Jianlin Shi

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a pivotal electrochemical reaction process for many renewable energy technologies. Due to the sluggish OER kinetics, searching for efficient low-cost non-precious metal catalysts is one of the crucial but very challenging steps. Herein, V 2 C MXene synergistically coupled with hypophosphite-intercalated FeNi (oxy)hydroxide (H 2 PO 2 − /FeNi-LDH-V 2 C) electrocatalyst is synthesized. The H 2 PO 2 − /FeNi-LDH-V 2 C exhibits excellent OER performance with an overpotential of 250 mV (η 10 ) and small Tafel slope of 46.5 mV dec −1 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, and excellent rechargeable Zn-air battery performance with superior open circuit potential (1.42 eV), power density (137 mW cm −2 ) and well durability. The strong interaction and electronic coupling with prominent charge-transfer between FeNi-LDHs and V 2 C MXene endow the composite significant OER performance and structural stability, and the adsorption/desorption balance for the OER reaction pathway, eventually promoting the intrinsic activity. This work demonstrates the great promise of MXene-based nanohybrids as advanced electrocatalysts for renewable energy applications.

Hybrid inorganic-organic capsules encapsulated FeNi with enhanced corrosion resistance and microwave absorption

Yang Guo,Kehua Tan,Xiaoying Guo,Jinmin Wei,Haipeng Lu

Responding to the critical need for stable microwave absorption (MA) devices in complex and extreme environments, dual-function electromagnetic wave absorbers have garnered significant attention. Addressing this, we developed a novel FeNi-based composite encapsulated within superhydrophobic SiO 2 @Perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (F13)/Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) hybrid capsules, approximately 28-nm-thick, utilizing a straightforward one-pot strategy. This innovative FeNi@SiO 2 @F13/MTMS composite surpassed pure FeNi, exhibiting an effective MA bandwidth of 8.16 GHz and a minimal reflection loss value of −24.03 dB at 2.00 mm. It also boasted the largest radar scattering cross-section reduction value recorded at 21.09 dB m 2 . The enhanced MA properties were primarily attributed to the SiO 2 @F13/MTMS, which significantly improved the substrate's impedance matching. In addition to facilitating multiple scattering and reflection, it also triggered dipole and interfacial polarization. Moreover, the SiO 2 @F13/MTMS layer was instrumental in reducing the corrosion current density of FeNi from 3.512 mA cm 2 to 5.59 nA cm 2 , thereby demonstrating exceptional corrosion resistance. This remarkable improvement was largely due to the surface hydrophobicity and the barrier effect provided by the hybrid capsules. Our exploration into corrosion-resistant and efficient MA materials provides valuable insights for the rational design of bifunctional components tailored for specific applications.

High-performance microwave absorption from biomass-derived porous helical carbon coils/FeNi composites

Chen Hao,Ma Zhongyun,Wang Zhijun,Liu Xinglong,Zheng Mengwei,Li Xinke,Tao Feng

This study presents a novel porous helical carbon coils/iron-nickel alloy (HCCs/FeNi) composite, fabricated via an efficient catalytic graphitization process, which exhibits exceptional microwave absorption performance. By synergistically combining the unique porous helical architecture of biomass-derived carbon with the superior magnetic loss of FeNi alloys, the composite achieves an outstanding minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of -53.85 dB and a broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of up to 5.16 GHz. This remarkable performance is attributed to synergistic mechanisms involving the distinctive helical and porous structure, abundant structural defects, optimal impedance matching, and multiple polarization relaxations. Our work not only underscores the great promise of biomass-derived carbon structures for electromagnetic wave absorption but also provides a viable design strategy for developing high-performance broadband microwave absorbers.

FeNi Prussian blue analogues on highly graphitized carbon nanosheets as efficient glucose sensors

Xue Jin-Hang,Sun Qiu-Hong,Han Cheng,Yang Yuan-Dong,Xu Shao-Jie,Li Qi-Peng,Qian Jin-Jie

Meeting the continuous glucose monitoring requirements of individuals necessitates the research and development of sensors with high sensitivity and stability. In this study, a straightforward strategy was proposed for synthesizing ultra-thin oxygen-rich graphitized carbon nanosheets (denoted as GCS-O). These nanosheets are obtained by calcining a topologically two-dimensional indium-based coordination polymer. Subsequently, the growth of FeNi Prussian blue analogue (PBA) on GCS-O effectively introduces active sites and increases the nitrogen content within the carbonaceous matrix. The resulting FeNi-PBA/GCS-O composite exhibits excellent glucose sensing performance with a broad linear range of 1 to 1300 μmol·L −1 . Meanwhile, it also achieves a high sensitivity of 2496 μA·mmol −1 ·L·cm −2 , a limit of detection of 100 nmol·L −1 (S/N = 3), and commendable long-term durability. The relatively simple synthesis process, exceptional sensitivity, and satisfactory electrochemical sensing performance of FeNi-PBA/GCS-O open up new directions for biosensor applications. Soft magnetic properties of nano-SiO2 coated FeNi alloy powder at high frequencies

Zhang Cong,Liu Xiansong,Kan Xucai,Feng Shuangjiu,Zhu Yong,Yang Yujie,Zhang Zongyang

Soft magnetic composites serve in electrical applications and sustainable energy supply, the magnetic flux changes in response to changes of the applied magnetic field, with energy loss. To reduce the loss, in this paper, the soft magnetic composite Fe 50 Ni 50 powder coated with nano-SiO 2 was prepared by tetraethoxysilane sol–gel method, and the microstructure of the coating was characterized. Then, soft magnetic Fe 50 Ni 50 powder cores have been prepared, and annealed with different atmospheres. The power loss is lower when the magnetic cores were annealed in a reducing hydrogen atmosphere. The lowest power loss (1390.7 mW/cm 3 , f  = 1000 kHz, B  = 50 mT, 120 °C) was obtained when the cores annealed at 730 °C in H 2 atmosphere. The results show that the eddy current loss is significantly reduced by coating SiO 2 , and the power loss is reduced about 33% in high-frequency (1 MHz and 50 mT, 25 °C). From 25 to 120 °C, the power loss at 1 MHz decreases by about 33% due to the reduction of hysteresis loss and eddy current loss. The excellent properties are very applicable for the inductors of 5G technology.

Novel FeNi-Based Nanowires Network Catalyst Involving Hydrophilic Channel for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Xianshu Qiao,Hongjun Kang,Yang Li,Kai Cui,Xin Jia,Xiaohong Wu,Wei Qin

Developing novel, efficient, and low-cost 3D FeNi-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with the special hydrophilic channel is still a challenge for improving hydrogen production efficiency. Herein, a novel 3D ethoxy substituted FeNi oxalate (ENWs-FeNi-C 2 O 4 ) nanowires network catalyst with hydrophilic channels is reported firstly, which shows an outstanding OER activity with a low overpotential (215 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and small Tafel slope (54.5 mV dec −1 ). OER catalytic mechanism indicates that the OH adsorption step and O 2 bubble diffusion step of OER reaction process can be significantly improved due to the special hydrophilic channels, and the ethoxy as an interlayer ligand not only expands the interlayer distance of layered FeNi (oxy) hydroxide true active species but modulates its electronic structure, promoting the *OOH formation step, and thus exhibiting the outstanding OER performance. This work provides a novel idea for the preparation of novel and efficient OER electro-catalysts with special 3D structures.

Optimal Ni⁰/Ni2 + modulates H* coverage to accelerate FeNi-C electro-catalyzing nitrate reduction

Yonghao Wang,Shiying Li,Youmei Liu,Zhiwei Zou,Xiaomei Zheng,Yongjing Wang

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (NO₃RR) offers a promising route for wastewater treatment and nitrogen resource recovery. In this work, a FeNi alloy-loaded carbon material (FeNi-C) was evaluated about NO 3 RR performance and the role of different active hydrogen (H*) was illustrated. FeNi(1:1)-C obtained at 700 °C exhibits a 96.6% NO 3 ⁻ -N removal and 99.6% NH₄ ⁺ -N selectivity at −1.5 V and it maintains excellent performance over 10 cycles without metal leaching. Furthermore, high-concentration nitrate can be converted to ammonium, recovered as struvite. Mechanism analysis indicate that a high surface coverage of adsorbed atomic hydrogen (H* ads ) is more crucial for enhancing the selectivity of nitrate-to-ammonia conversion compared with the free H*(H* free )in the electrolyte. Tafel slope combined with verification experiments reveal that an optimal Ni 0 /Ni 2+ (≈2) facilitates water electrolysis to enables FeNi(1:1)-C forming a high surface coverage of H* ads . Thereby, FeNi(1:1)-C maintains an abundant H* ads -covered reductive-microenvironment surface, promoting fast conversion between H* ads and the adjacent nitrogen-containing intermediates and suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Furthermore, this reductive-microenvironment surface also helps protect the FeNi alloy from oxidation, endowing its superior stability. This work highlights the superior role of H* ads over H*(H* free )in the electrolyte.

Ternary hybrid PtM@polyaniline (M = Ni, FeNi) counter electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells

Yudi Wang,Jialong Duan,Yuanyuan Zhao,Xiya Yang,Qunwei Tang

Developing efficient and cost-effective counter electrodes (CEs) to catalyze triiodide reduction reaction is a persistent objective for high-performance dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). One promising solution is to design electron-enriched electrode materials by combining conductive polymers with alloys. In this work, ternary hybrid PtM@polyaniline (M = Ni, FeNi) CEs are synthesized by one-step replacement reaction and in-situ polymerization reaction. When assembling into liquid-junction DSSCs, the power conversion efficiencies of 8.52% and 8.39% for the devices tailored with PtNi@polyaniline and PtFeNi@polyaniline CEs can be obtained. The experimental results demonstrate that the enhanced photovoltaic performances are mainly attributed to matching work function and high electrocatalytic activity of these well-designed hybrid CEs. Arising from the competitive reactions between transition metal and I 2 /I 3 − species, the dissolution reaction of Pt in liquid electrolyte is restricted and therefore the long-term stability of corresponding devices are significantly enhanced.

Li Fan,Tan Pengyu,Li Degui,Zhuge Xiangqun,Luo Kun,Ren Yurong,Chen Yimin,Luo Yujia,Yang Kaiwen,Lu Jianwei,Liu Dan,Lei Weiwei,Ma Aijing

The extraction of chitin/chitosan from biowaste shrimp shells involves the heavy use of strong acids and alkaline solutions, resulting in a series of decomposed amino acids in the extraction waste. Herein, we demonstrate a new strategy to grow FeNi nanoalloys encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (3FeNi-NCNTs) at a high percentage by sintering the extracted amino acids, FeCl 3 , NiCl 2 and melamine at 900 ℃ in N 2 . The FeNi-NCNT exhibits a competitive limiting current density in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to the commercial 20% Pt/C, with the onset potential and half-wave potential at 0.98 V and 0.84 V versus RHE. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance also rivals the RuO 2 catalyst, and the overpotential (E j =10 mAcm -2 - E 1/2 ) of as low as 0.76 V, highlighting a green pathway to yield superior bifunctional catalysts at low cost. When used in zinc-air batteries (ZABs), the aqueous ZAB showed excellent cyclic and rate performance, together with the peak power density and specific capacity of 173.6 mW cm -2 and 809.9 mAh g -1 (corresponding to an energy density of XXX Wh kg -1 based on the mass of consumed zinc); and the flexible ZAB with a polyacryl-amide hydrogel electrolyte also exhibited a high peak power density of 133 mWcm -2 and a long cycle life of 140 h, superior to the reference Pt/RuO 2 -based ZABs, highlighting a sustainable biowaste upcycling of shrimp shell valorization on energy storage. Controlled self-assembled FeNi alloy/graphene foam composite for lightweight and broadband microwave absorption

Zhen Liu,Bo Wang,Shicheng Wei,Wei Huang,Yujiang Wang,Yi Liang,Xinyang Wang,Zhengjie Yang

The search for lightweight and broadband microwave absorbing materials (MAMs) is crucial to fulfill the demands of practical applications. Herein, an FeNi alloy/graphene foam (FNGF) composite was prepared by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The microwave-absorbing properties of the FNGF with varying concentrations of FeNi alloy (samples designated as 1#, 2#, 3#, 4#, and 5#) were systematically studied. Remarkably, with an ultra-low filling content of 5 wt%, the composite still achieves excellent microwave absorbing performance. As expected, the effective absorption bandwidth of sample 1# covers the entire Ku band (11.76–18 GHz) at a thickness of only 2.09 mm, and sample 3# reaches a minimum reflection loss of −63.76 dB at 15.68 GHz. FeNi alloys have a significant influence on the microscopic morphology, phase structure, and electromagnetic properties of composites. The superior MA properties can be attributed to the synergistic effect of superior impedance matching, robust dielectric loss, and magnetic loss. Notably, FNGF presents as a promising candidate for lightweight broadband MAMs.

FeNi foam with specifically boosted peroxidase-like activity for smartphone-based rapid visual detection

Yu Zhang,Tian Luan,Qi Fang,Zhimin Song,Xudong Shang,Lehui Lu,Yan Du

Smartphone-based analysis is an emerging technique that provides a wide range of biomedical applications in point-of-care testing (POCT). Here, we have developed a portable and rapid sensing platform. It integrates an activated FeNi foam with specifically boosted peroxidase (POD)-like activity as signal generator , a lower light photography device and an image digitization application (APP) that help to realize direct signal readout through a smartphone. Significantly, by introducing polydopamine nanoparticles (PDNPs) on activated FeNi foam, the POD-like activity can be enhanced over tenfold, in sharp contrast to the silent oxidase (OXD)-like activity. It is determined that the improved catalytic performance originates from the winkle structures on activated FeNi foam, synergistic effect between Fe and Ni and the cycles between Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and catechol/quinones for electron transfer and mass transport. Further, the use of PDNPs as an immobilization linker enables the construction of an integrated nanozyme by immobilizing natural enzymes like glucose oxidase . Combined with a multifunctional photography system, sensitive and rapid detection of H 2 O 2 and glucose were achieved, the limit of detection (LOD) was 10.2 µM and 40.6 µM, respectively, and detection time was less than 6 min. This highlights the potential of the smartphone-based sensing platform for online monitoring biomarkers in a high-throughput and point-of-care format. Considering the significance of efficient catalysts and the growing demand for POCT, our study contributes to the development of peroxidase mimics based on metal foam and provides valuable insights for improving the performance of photography devices in visual detection.

FeNi supported on carbon sponge for efficient urea oxidation in direct urea fuel cell

Xianzhi Yin,Kai Zhu,Ke Ye,Jun Yan,Dianxue Cao,Dongming Zhang,Jiaxin Yao,Guiling Wang

The direct urea fuel cell (DUFC) is a power generation equipment with urea-rich wastewater or urine as fuel source. It has the unique ability to purify sewage while simultaneously generating electricity, making it a highly efficient and environmentally friendly option. In this paper, pomegranate seed-like Ni nano-blocks and Fe nanosheets were synthesized by electrodeposition and chemical reduction and attached to the carbonized melamine sponge matrix. The N -doped carbon sponge (NCS) provided a large number of polyhedral holes, which allowed for efficient gas escape through channels. The combination of Fe reduces the initial urea oxidation potential, reaction activation energy and reaction resistance. The synthesized FeNi supported on N -doped carbon sponge composite (FeNi@NCS) has a catalytic current density of 625 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 42.51 mV dec −1 for urea electrooxidation reaction (UOR). Assembling the direct urine-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell (DUrHPFC) resulted in the highest performance output. The open circuit voltage (OCV) was 0.98 V, and the peak power density reached 9.61 mW cm −2 . The results show that the prepared catalyst provides an opportunity to solve the problems that hinder the development of urea green cycle at present.
