Conventional nanozyme-based pesticide detection often requires the assistance of acetylcholinesterase. In this work, a CuCeTA nanozyme was successfully designed for the direct colorimetric detection of glyphosate. Direct detection can effectively avoid the problems caused by cascading with natural enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase. By assembling tannic acid, copper sulfate pentahydrate and cerium(III) nitrate hexahydrate, CuCeTA nanoflowers were prepared. The obtained CuCeTA possessed excellent peroxidase-like activity that could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxidized TMB in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Glyphosate could effectively inhibit the peroxidase-like activity of CuCeTA while other pesticides (fenthion, chlorpyrifos, profenofos, phosmet, bromoxynil and dichlorophen) did not show significant inhibitory effects on the catalytic activity of CuCeTA. In this way, CuCeTA could be used for the colorimetric detection of glyphosate with a low detection limit of 0.025 ppm. Combined with a smartphone and imageJ software, a glyphosate test paper was designed with a detection limit of 3.09 ppm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that glyphosate and CuCeTA might be bound by coordination, which could affect the catalytic activity of CuCeTA. Our CuCeTA-based nanozyme system exhibited unique selectivity and sensitivity for glyphosate detection and this work may provide a new strategy for rapid and convenient detection of pesticides.

The stability of molecularly imprinted membranes (MIMs) is a critical factor influencing their reusability and detection performance. To overcome stability limitations, a robust porous imprinted hydrogel membrane (porous PVA/HS-β-CD/Ag/MIPs) was developed by grafting recognition sites onto a porous framework. The membrane was synthesized through a multistep process: (i) A porous hydrogel matrix was formed via freeze–thaw-induced cross-linking between poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and thiolated β-cyclodextrin (HS-β-CD), combined with the use of a pore-forming agent; (ii) the membrane was functionalized as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate through in situ reduction of silver ions (from AgNO3); (iii) glyphosate (GLY)-imprinted polymers were anchored via precipitation polymerization, utilizing HS-β-CD as grafting sites to achieve specific recognition and detection. Morphological and stability analyses demonstrated that the SERS-imprinted porous membrane exhibits high structural integrity, retaining 94.89% of its detection capability after 12 h under continuous water flow. This study introduces a robust covalent anchoring strategy between the imprinting layer and the substrate to form chemical cross-linking, providing an effective pathway for designing high-performance, long-lifespan molecularly imprinted membranes.

The environmental persistence of
glyphosate and its transformation
into aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) necessitate a mechanistic understanding
of its abiotic degradation in natural environments. Manganese (Mn)
oxides are ubiquitous redox-active minerals capable of oxidizing glyphosate;
however, how Mn oxide mineralogy and pH regulate degradation kinetics,
pathway selectivity, and interfacial redox processes remains unclear.
Here, we investigated glyphosate oxidation by three representative
Mn oxides, layered birnessite, disordered-layered vernadite, and tunnel-structured
cryptomelane, across pH 3–7. Vernadite exhibited the highest
and most sustained oxidative reactivity, cryptomelane showed rapid
but strongly pH-dependent oxidation, and birnessite displayed slower
yet persistent reactivity. Mineral structure controlled product selectivity:
under near-neutral conditions, layered Mn oxides favored glycine formation
through C–N bond cleavage adjacent to the phosphonate group,
whereas tunnel-structured cryptomelane promoted AMPA accumulation
through cleavage near the carboxyl group. Acidic conditions (pH 3
and 5) enhanced AMPA accumulation across all Mn oxides, suggesting
increased persistence risks. Spectroscopic and kinetic analyses demonstrated
that glyphosate oxidation involved surface complexation with Mn(IV),
interfacial electron transfer, and propagation through transient,
labile Mn(III) intermediates. These findings reveal that Mn oxide
mineralogy and pH jointly govern bond-selective glyphosate oxidation
and AMPA accumulation, advancing mechanistic predictions of glyphosate
fate in soil and aquatic environments.

Organophosphorus herbicide (i.e. glyphosate) contaminated wastewaters pose significant environmental and ecological risks, exacerbating the global phosphorus crisis. In this study, we design and optimize a novel nanoconfined CuLa@CNT catalyst for the simultaneous catalytic degradation of GLP and recovery of phosphate from GLP-containing agricultural wastewater. Designed with copper oxide as the catalytic site and lanthanum oxide as the phosphate-adsorbing site within carbon nanotubes (CNT), the catalyst exhibited 100% degradation of GLP within 40 min and 100% phosphate adsorption within 90 min, under the initial GLP concentration of 20 ppm. The excellent reusability and tolerance to complex environmental conditions were demonstrated, and a GLP removal efficiency of 91.1% was attained even in actual agricultural drainage water, confirming its practical applicability. The detailed characterization confirmed the successful formation of the nanoconfined structure, where copper and lanthanum species were uniformly dispersed within the CNT channels. Theoretical calculations and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis revealed that the confined CNT structure not only favored the generation of reactive oxygen species (•OH, 1 O 2 ) but also promoted selective C P bond cleavage in GLP and adsorption of phosphate, thereby enhancing the selectivity for phosphate recovery over other organic intermediates, such as aminomethylphosphonic acid. This study provides a simple and highly effective method for addressing organophosphorus agricultural wastewater while simultaneously recovering valuable phosphate, contributing to sustainable water treatment and resource recycling.

Glyphosate is reported to compromise the central nervous system and induce behavioral disorders in mammals. However, evidence is deficient with respect to the potential mechanisms involved. In this study, C57BL/6 mice were orally exposed to glyphosate at doses ranging from 0 to 200 mg/kg/day for 16 weeks. The results of behavioral tests showed that glyphosate decreased time spent and distance traveled within the central area of open field test, decreased the retention time and number of entries into the open arms, and increased the retention time and number of entries into the close arms of elevated plus maze test. The expressions of anxiety-related genes htr5 , htr6 , and tmem132d were also significantly upregulated by glyphosate. This behavioral phenotype was linked to the permeation of glyphosate into the brain via disrupting the functional tight junctions of blood–brain barrier (BBB). As a result, glyphosate directly compromised the morphological structure of neurons, increased the number of IBA-1 microglia, and activated the expression of NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis pathway (NLRP3, Caspase-1, GSDMD, and IL-18) in the hippocampus of mice. Moreover, the glyphosate-induced activation of NLRP3 pathway in microglia was markedly reversed by NLRP3 inhibitor MCC950. The conditional mediums from glyphosate-treated BV2 cells aggravated the cytotoxicity of HT-22 neurons, which was also rescued by MCC950. In conclusion, this work demonstrated that microglia-mediated activation of NLRP3 pyroptosis pathway plays a detrimental role in glyphosate-behavioral disorders and neuron damage. These findings provide novel evidence for glyphosate-induced neurotoxicity and support the growing association between glyphosate exposure and neurobehavioral disorders in humans.

Glyphosate, a widely used organophosphorus herbicide in agriculture, poses potential threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health due to its long-term environmental persistence. This study presents a spectroscopic detection system based on a competitive reaction utilizing the Ponceau 4R (P4R)-Cu2+ complex. Leveraging glyphosate's high affinity for chelating copper ions, the method enables indirect, rapid, and visual quantitative analysis of glyphosate. In the presence of glyphosate, Cu2+ preferentially binds to it, causing the release of P4R and the restoration of its characteristic absorption spectrum, resulting in a measurable absorbance change at 505 nm. Systematic optimization of buffer pH, P4R concentration, Cu2+ concentration, and their ratio established the optimal detection conditions (120 μmol L−1 P4R, 120 μmol L−1 Cu2+, 40 mmol L−1 borate buffer, pH 9.0). Under these conditions, the method exhibited a good linear relationship within the concentration range of 5.9–295.8 μmol L−1 (R2 = 0.998). The limit of quantitation (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) were determined to be 14.0 μmol L−1 and 4.6 μmol L−1, respectively. This method was successfully applied to the analysis of spiked surface water samples and soils collected from the upper reaches of the Liao River, yielding average recoveries of 98.7–107.6% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 5%. Interference tests indicated that citric acid interference was manageable (recovery: 88.9%) when its concentration ratio to glyphosate was ≤2 : 1, while tartaric acid and oxalic acid required masking strategies to suppress their interference. This method, characterized by its simplicity, rapid response, and low instrumental dependence, provides reliable technical support for the rapid screening of glyphosate in environmental samples.

Phosphogypsum (PG) disposal and pollution pose dual environmental challenges in phosphorus industries. This study pioneers a one-step synthesis of copper-modified hydroxyapatite (Cu/PGHAP) directly from PG waste, enabling efficient Glyphosate ( Phosphonomethylglycine, PMG) degradation via Fenton-like catalysis. Cu/PGHAP was synthesized by co-precipitation under optimized conditions (20 % Cu/Ca, 333.15 K, 16 h aging). Catalytic performance was evaluated by PMG removal kinetics, with mechanistic insights from SEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, and EPR. The results showed that Cu/PGHAP possesses a hierarchical mesoporous structure (specific surface area of 57.16 m 2 /g) and lattice-embedded Cu 2+ sites. Under optimal conditions (6 g/L catalyst, 5 mM H 2 O 2 , 50 mg/L PMG, pH 11), 100 % PMG removal was achieved within 60 min. Alkaline processing enhances stability, maintaining 99.86 % reusability after 10 cycles, with extremely low copper ion leaching. Radical capture experiments confirmed the 1 O 2 driven degradation mechanism. This work establishes a “waste control by waste” strategy for simultaneous PG valorization and PMG detoxification, advancing circular economy in chemical industries.

Environmental glyphosate exposure has been linked to glioblastoma (GBM), yet its molecular basis remains unclear. Integrating network-toxicology and druggable Mendelian randomization screens, we identified the Src-family kinase FYN as the principal glyphosate target. Molecular-dynamics simulations, surface-plasmon resonance (KD = 1.54 μM) and pull-down assays confirmed high-affinity binding and highlighted ASP353 as a dominant contact residue. Multi-omics profiling showed FYN over-expression and promoter hypomethylation in GBM, correlating with diminished immune infiltration. In U87 cells, sub-toxic glyphosate (0.1 mg/L, 12 h) up-regulated FYN, activated PI3K–AKT–mTOR signaling, increased GLUT1, LDHA and PKM2, and accelerated proliferation, migration and invasion; lentiviral sh-FYN reversed these effects and curtailed glycolytic flux. Orthotopic mouse studies mirrored the in-vitro findings, with FYN knock-down suppressing glyphosate-driven tumor growth. Exosomes derived from sh-FYN glioma cells weakened macrophage M2 polarization and reduced CXCL1, IL-10 and TGF-β secretion, revealing an immunometabolism axis. Collectively, these results establish FYN as the mechanistic conduit between glyphosate and GBM and demonstrate that targeting FYN—directly or via exosome delivery—reprograms tumor glycolysis and immunity, offering a tractable strategy against glyphosate-associated malignancy.

Glyphosate herbicide is commonly used to kill weeds in crops because of its high efficiency and low cost. However, excessive use of glyphosate not only leads to soil, surface water, and groundwater pollution, but also presents a potential risk to human health. Photocatalysis as an advanced oxidation technology can efficiently and environmentally degrade glyphosate, and bismuth-based photocatalysts have garnered extensive attention for their strong photo-oxidation capabilities. In this work, a green reaction route was developed to synthesize Bi-based/g-C 3 N 4 /CdS ternary heterojunction photocatalysts for glyphosate removal, by combining acetic acid-glycol synergistic systems with atmospheric pressure microwave methods. By regulating the structure and composition of the catalyst, excellent photodegradation and stabilization of glyphosate by BiOCl/g-C 3 N 4 /CdS (> 98% removal of glyphosate in 90 min). This study is of great significance for the green preparation and application of efficient photocatalysts for glyphosate removal, and the development of other recyclable systems.

Establishing a fast and simple method for determining glyphosate (Glyp) is crucial for safeguarding the environment and protecting human well-being. In this work, a copper benzenedicarboxylate (CuBDC) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with peroxidase-like property and stimulus-responsive fluorescent was prepared by binding Cu 2+ with terephthalic acid (TA). The presence of Glyp can coordination with Cu 2+ ion and block the peroxidase-like properties of CuBDC, thereby suppressing the catalysis the oxidation of TA into fluorescent product 2-hydroxyterephthalic acid (HTA). Based on these facts, a simple, rapid and sensitive fluorescence detection strategy for Glyp was developed. The fluorescence decreases linearly in the 0.5–10 µg/mL Glyp concentration range, and the limit of detection was calculated to be 23.99 ng/mL. Furthermore, the dual-functional CuMOFs-based label-free strategy was effectively employed for detecting Glyp in river water samples. With good performance and practicability, this strategy provides a potential application in the convenient and reliable determination of Glyp in the environment.

The detection techniques for glyphosate residues have garnered attention due to the potential toxicity associated. Herein, we introduced a fluorescent “turn-on” strategy, leveraging competitive coordination with iron, for glyphosate detection. We synthesized iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) at room temperature. Among them, 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (DOBDC) acted as a ligand to produce strong fluorescence, and iron ions acted as a quencher to quench the fluorescence of DOBDC. Another ligand, 2-nitroterephthalic acid, contained nitro quenching of the fluorescence, giving it a lower background. Glyphosate competed with the ligands for ions, weakening the interaction between ions and the ligands. This disruption restored the fluorescence emission at 535 nm, enabling glyphosate detection. To facilitate field application, Fe-MOFs were encapsulated within agarose to create a functional hydrogel. Glyphosate penetrated the hydrogel and resulting in fluorescence “turn-on”. Remarkably, this method facilitated visual detection through smartphone photography coupled with RGB (red/green/blue) analysis, offering a user-friendly and portable solution.

A simple and efficient dual-signal electrochemical sensor was designed for glyphosate (GLYP) determination based on the one-step electro-synthesized Cu-Hemin MOFs/CNTs nanocrystals. Cu-Hemin MOFs/CNTs were directly modified on the electrode through electrodeposition, avoiding complicated synthesis and modification processes. The incorporation of CNTs greatly boosted the conductivity of Cu-Hemin MOFs and the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensor. Cu active sites in Cu-Hemin MOFs were converted to CuCl, allowing the specific detection of GLYP with the turn of CuCl into non-electroactive Cu-GLYP. Meanwhile, GLYP showed highly effective inhibition effect on the inherent peroxidase-like activity of Cu-Hemin MOFs, therefore generating the second electrochemical signal with Cu-Hemin MOFs-catalyzed o -phenylenediamine ( o -PD) + H 2 O 2 system. The Cu-Hemin MOFs/CNTs based sensor with two electrochemical signals showed good linearities of 1.0 × 10 −10 M − 3.0 × 10 −6 M and 1.0 × 10 −10 M − 5.0 × 10 −5 M, with detection limits of 5.17 × 10 −12 M and 6.81 × 10 −12 M for the CuCl signal based assay and nanozyme catalyzed o -PD + H 2 O 2 procedure, respectively. This simple and robust dual-signal sensor with excellent selectivity, accuracy, and stability allowed GLYP quantification in real samples, highlighting the potential application of this approach for food and environmental monitoring.
