Highly Efficient Oxygen-Modulated Ru-Based HER Electrocatalyst in a Wide pH Range

Yong Jiang,Youcheng Qin,Wei Luo,Hao Liu,Wei Shen,Yimin Jiang,Ming Li,Rongxing He

Graphical Boosting HER stability : The Ru-MC prepared by a special synthesis method can greatly improve the utilization of Ru; the strong interaction between Ru and O modulates the electronic structure of Ru nanoparticles (NP) and prevents Ru NPs from aggregation to boost HER stability. The Ru(3 mL)-MC exhibits high HER performance with overpotential of 27 and 40 mV at benchmark of 10 mA cm −2 both in alkaline and acidic solutions. Crystallized Ruthenium (Ru) metal with high hydrogen production activity is extremely unstable. Herein, we report an efficient and durable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst Ru-MC (mesoporous carbon) synthesized by a special method, in which Ru 3+ is added after the formation of spherical MC, leading to only a small amount of Ru being embedded and the vast majority being evenly distributed on the MC surface. The dispersed Ru nanoparticles not only prevent them from aggregation to greatly improve their stability (both over 160 hours in acidic and alkaline solutions), but also provide outstanding intrinsic catalytic activity because oxygen regulates the electronic structure of Ru nanoparticles. The as-synthesized catalyst only needs an overpotential of 27 and 40 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . The present work provides guidance for the design of efficient and stable Ru-based HER electrocatalysts used in a wide pH range.

Boosting the electrocatalytic HER performance of Ni3N-V2O3 via the interface coupling effect

Peng Zhou,Guangyao Zhai,Xingshuai Lv,Yuanyuan Liu,Zeyan Wang,Peng Wang,Zhaoke Zheng,Hefeng Cheng,Ying Dai,Baibiao Huang

Constructing a suitable coupling interface to improve the performance is of great significance for the development of high-efficient electrocatalysts. Here, we design and synthesize a Ni 3 N-V 2 O 3 composite via nitriding treatment of NiV-LDH precursor, which exhibits excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance including low potential, fast kinetic rate and high stability. Combined with various characterizations and theoretical calculations, the performance promotion mechanism of Ni 3 N-V 2 O 3 is analyzed in depth. It is proved that the confinement effect and interface coupling effect caused by the introduction of V 2 O 3 can greatly increase the catalytic sites, regulate the charge distribution at the interface, optimize the occupancy of the N 2p orbital, and ultimately improve the electrocatalytic HER performance of Ni 3 N. This work provides a new idea and guidance for the design and preparation of high-efficient catalysts in the future.

Luteolin-Loading Her-2 Nanospheres Enhances Targeting and Therapeutic Effects of Breast Cancer

Xiao Chuanguang,Wang Xiaohong,Shen Jiacheng,Xia Yanjie,Qiu Shusheng,Liang Xiaodong,Gu Wenyue

Despite the broad anticancer activity, whereas the clinical application of luteolin is hindered by unsatisfactory water solubility and non-targeting. Herein, targeted inhibitory effects of luteolin-loading HER2 nanospheres (Her-2-NPs) were successfully prepared by thin film ultrasonic method. In comparison with the non-targeted nanospheres, Her-2 nanospheres could significantly boost the intake of luteolin in SK-BR-3 cells. The proliferation and apoptosis of breast cancer cells were detected by MTT testing and flow cytometry examination, respectively. Consequently, the expressions of FOXO1 mRNA level was detected using qPCR assay and protein level was detected using Westernblot. We discovered that Luteolin-loading Her-2 nanospheres could significantly hinder the proliferation of breast cancer cells, down-regulation their migration, and up-regulation FOXO1 expression at mRNA and protein levels, reveal a mechanism whereby luteolin interferes with breast cancer. Collectively, these results suggest Her-2-modified nanospheres increases the efficiency of luteolin uptake and thus improves the treatment benefit of breast cancer.

Preparation of V doped Co2N/CoN and its superior HER and OER performance

Yan Lu,Weilin Weng,Yuanhang Lu,Xinxin Pang,Naixuan Hu,Banghua Peng

Hydrogen is increasingly recognized as a critical energy source for the future. Transition metal nitrides hydrogen catalysts have found to narrow the d-band contraction effectively and alter the filling state of the metal, thereby modulating the metal-hydrogen bonding energy and enhancing both electrical conductivity and catalytic activity. In this study, V-doped cobalt nitrides (V–Co 2 N/CoN) with two distinct crystalline structures were successfully synthesized through the nitriding of V-doped cobalt bicarbonate (V–CoCH) as a precursor. The morphology and structure of the resulting materials were carefully optimized by adjusting the V doping amount and nitriding temperature. For hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the final product V–Co 2 N/CoN-1-400 only needs 47 mV and 230 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm −2 , and works at 1.69 V to drive the overall water splitting for 10 mA cm −2 , showing good stability performance without fluctuation for about 10 h. This work implies that V-doped cobalt nitrides can lead to enhanced water splitting catalytic activity. Our findings may illustrate the significance of V doping for improving electrocatalytic performance, and demonstrate the potential of CoV bimetallic nitrides as effective electrocatalysts , offering valuable insights for the further development of non-precious metal nitride-based catalysts.

Nitrogen-doped graphite supported cobalt nanoparticles as excellent ORR/OER/HER trifunctional electrocatalysts

Wenxuan Fan,Xiangmei Tang,Qingfeng Yi,Guang Li

Non precious metal catalysts (NMCs) are considered to have great potential for applications in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and water splitting reaction (OER and HER). Compared with traditional precious metal catalysts, NMCs have the characteristics of low cost, better catalytic performance, wider applicability, and better durability. This article reports a facile method for preparing layered Co-N-C catalysts by simple ball milling and pyrolysis of a mixture of graphite, ammonium carbonate, melamine and cobalt phthalocyanine. The synthesized nanoCo@bmGr and nanoCo@bmGr-EG samples exhibit excellent performance in ORR, OER and HER. For ORR in alkaline electrolyte, the nanoCo@bmGr and nanoCo@bmGr-EG present very close Tafel slopes to Pt/C catalyst. For OER under alkaline condition, the nanoCo@bmGr and nanoCo@bmGr-EG exhibit smaller Tafel slopes than IrO 2 catalyst, and at a current density of 10 mA∙cm −2 , their potential difference with IrO 2 is only 50 and 70 mV respectively. For the chronopotentiometric tests of OER at current densities of 20 and 30 mA∙cm −2 , the two samples show lower potentials than IrO 2 . In HER testing, nanoCo@bmGr and nanoCo@bmGr-EG display very similar onset potentials and Tafel slopes to Pt/C. This work provides a simple approach for preparing catalysts with good catalytic activity for ORR/OER/HER.

Ni/WC-Mo2C ternary-interface electrocatalyst for bidirectional optimization of HER and OER

Bao Liu,Yi Li,Pengcheng Ding,Dan Li,Jiwei Li,Xuanwei Zhao,Jia Zu,Maoyu Wang,Ye Sun,Miao Yu

Developing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting remains challenging due to the antagonistic demands of oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). Herein, we present a ternary heterointerface non-precious catalyst, Ni/WC-Mo 2 C, for bidirectional HER and OER optimization. Combining in situ characterization and theoretical calculations, we demonstrate how this design overcomes conventional Schottky junction limitations: (i) The band gradient of the WC-Mo 2 C semiconductor heterojunction synergizes with metallic Ni's electron-donating properties to construct an "electron staircase" channel to enhance charge transfer while increasing active electron density and lowering the d -band center; and (ii) ternary interface-induced lattice strain buffering and localized electron redistribution stabilize high-valent Ni species and optimize intermediate adsorption/desorption energetics. This synergy resolves the OER-HER electronic conflict, endowing the catalyst with ultralow overpotentials of merely 26 mV for HER and 153 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The assembled electrolyzer delivers a high current density of 1000 mA cm −2 at a low cell voltage of 1.73 V and sustains stable overall water splitting operation for an extended duration of 1200 h, outperforming noble-metal benchmarks (Pt/C||RuO 2 ). This work establishes a new paradigm for non-precious bifunctional electrocatalyst design through multicomponent heterointerface engineering.

Tungsten doping generated Mo2C-MoC heterostructure to improve HER performance in alkaline solution

Qingtao Wang,Fangfang Mi,Jian Li,Yanxia Wu,Xiaozhong Zhou,Guofu Ma,Shufang Ren

Renewable hydrogen energy has been regarded as ideal green energy. There is an urgent need for efficient and stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Molybdenum carbide (Mo x C) has excellent intrinsic activity and stability, which is expected as one of the ideal candidates to replace Pt. Herein, we report a facile Tungsten (W) doping method to regulate the crystal structure of Mo x C to generate a Mo 2 C-MoC heterostructure. It reduces the charge transfer resistance and regulates adsorption and desorption of hydrogen, thereby promoting the HER in alkaline solution. Besides, the carbon matrix not only increases the conductivity, but also protects the active site of W-Mo x C/C from agglomeration and deactivation due to high temperature. Under alkaline media, the W-Mo x C/C has improved HER catalytic activity. In 1 M KOH, an overpotential of 178 mV is required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and the Tafel slope is 54.3 mV dec −1 . Moreover, it has a small charge transfer resistance and good stability. This work develops a multi-effect doping method that generates heterostructure and increases the active sites, which providing a new strategy for the performance regulation of other electrocatalysts.

The performance and corrosion resistance of an electrodeposited Ni-Mo-Cu HER catalyst

Jian Zhang,Hongxing Lu,Peng He,Zijie Ren,Guofang Shen,Ruxia Liu,Lei Wang,Guoqiang Luo

This study presents a facile electrodeposition and annealing procedure for the fabrication of Ni-Mo-Cu catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction . Cu addition augmented the surface area and conductivity, while the synergistic effect of the three elements enhanced the intrinsic catalytic activity. After annealing in a vacuum at 300 °C, a dense Cu-Ni solid solution was formed on the catalyst surface, which improved the distribution of components and led to a significant improvement in corrosion resistance . Compared to the directly deposited Ni-Mo catalyst, the annealed Ni-Mo-Cu catalyst exhibited a reduced overpotential of 143 mV to generate a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH at 25 °C, and its corrosion current density diminished from 0.21 to 0.035 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M NaCl at 25 °C.

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction promoted by catalyst-bound proton-abstracting ligands

Nana Zhou,Yurong Yin,Baojuan Luo,Yongxin Fu,Xiaoxun Ma,Chengyi Dai

The electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR), which is well suited for reducing atmospheric CO 2 levels and generating clean energy. Water is the main proton source in the electrochemical reduction process. However, water features a high dissociation energy barrier, and most protons are involved in HER, so that only a small amount of H + is used in the CO 2 reduction reaction. Herein, we reveal that appropriately chosen ligands on the catalyst surface can abstract protons from water, store them, and transfer them to CO 2 to promote the formation of COOH and improve the proton utilization efficiency of the eCO 2 RR. Moreover, the activity of the ligand complexed protons is shown to be lower than that of free ones and thus result in HER inhibition our ligands with different pK a values (i.e., proton release capacities) are used to functionalize ZnO, and the plot of pK a vs. the FE CO exhibits a volcano shape. Overly small pK a leads to the combination of abundant protons with each other and the dominance of the HER, whereas overly large pK a does not promote the utilization of H + by CO 2 . Ligands with suitable pK a can properly bind and release protons, which is conducive to the formation of *COOH, thus accelerating eCO 2 RR. In particular, mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) considerably enhances catalytic activity because of its moderate pK a (FE CO  = 90 %, which is 2 times higher than the FE CO of unmodified ZnO, and j CO is nearly 5 times higher). In situ infrared spectroscopic analysis proves that the above ligand can abstract protons from H 2 O and then release them, promoting the dissociation of H 2 O. Theoretical calculations show that pK a affects the ability of ligands to abstract and release protons.

Microstructure engineering of Co-MOF derived MoS2CoS2/CoSO4 composite: Synergistic effects and ionic distribution optimization for efficient hydrogen evolution

Yingxuan Cao,Zhuoao Li,Pengbo Ding,Lixiu Guan,Zixiang Bai,Chenghao Yuan,Junguang Tao

The development of cost-effective and high-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for sustainable energy systems. Herein, we report a novel Co-MOF-derived MoS 2 CoS 2 /CoSO 4 composite on carbon cloth, synthesized through a controlled hydrothermal and thermal activation process. This catalyst achieves a low overpotential of 36 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 36 mV dec −1 in 1 M KOH, rivaling commercial Pt/C. By managing the preparation temperature, we preserved the MOF structure’s integrity, maintaining a high specific surface area. Sulfurization at 450 °C enhanced electron transfer and prevented nanoparticle aggregation. The catalyst demonstrates remarkable stability over 175 h, attributed to the Co-Mo bimetallic synergy and in-situ composite formation, which optimize hydrogen adsorption and electron transfer. Importantly, we explored how sulfur source modulation affects active site formation and activity. Lower sulfur levels hinder CoS 2 formation, resulting in sparse sites and inferior performance, while optimal sulfur ensures dense composite growth. This study emphasizes the importance of local ionic dynamics in shaping catalyst microstructure and provides a universal method for designing non-precious metal electrocatalysts through ionic distribution engineering.

Versatile Route To Fabricate Precious-Metal Phosphide Electrocatalyst for Acid-Stable Hydrogen Oxidation and Evolution Reactions

Zonghua Pu,Tingting Liu,Weiyue Zhao,Xiudong Shi,Yanchen Liu,Gaixia Zhang,Weihua Hu,Shuhui Sun,Shijun Liao

Highly active catalyst for the hydrogen oxidation/evolution reactions (HOR and HER) plays an essential role for the water-to-hydrogen reversible conversion. Currently, increasing attention has been concentrated on developing low-cost, high-activity, and long-life catalytic materials, especially for acid media due to the promise of proton exchange membrane (PEM)-based electrolyzers and polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Although non-precious-metal phosphide (NPMP) catalysts have been widely researched, their electrocatalytic activity toward HER is still not satisfactory compared to that of Pt catalysts. Herein, a series of precious-metal phosphides (PMPs) supported on graphene (rGO), including IrP2-rGO, Rh2P-rGO, RuP-rGO, and Pd3P-rGO, are prepared by a simple, facile, eco-friendly, and scalable approach. As an example, the resultant IrP2-rGO displays better HER electrocatalytic performance and longer durability than the benchmark materials of commercial Pt/C under acidic, neutral, and basic electrolytes. To attain a current density of 10 mA cm–2, IrP2-rGO shows overpotentials of 8, 51, and 13 mV in 0.5 M dilute sulfuric acid, 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and 1.0 M potassium hydroxide solutions, respectively. Additionally, IrP2-rGO also exhibits exceptional HOR performance in the 0.1 M HClO4 medium. Therefore, this work offers a vital addition to the development of a number of PMPs with excellent activity toward HOR and HER.

Tentacle-like core–shell CoNi2S4/C3N4 bifunctional electrocatalysts for efficient overall alkaline water splitting

Qingfei Li,Nan Li,Mianmian Wu,Guifang Sun,Wenjing Shen,Minghao Shi,Jiangquan Ma

Stable and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts are of great significance for sustainable energy conversion and human society sustainability. However, conventional electrocatalytic materials tend to exhibit high overpotentials and unsatisfactory chemical activities. Herein, we construct novel CoNi2S4/C3N4 nanowires on a nickel foam (NF) electrode as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for alkaline water splitting by a two-step hydrothermal and thermal annealing process. The prepared CoNi2S4/C3N4 electrocatalyst exhibits superior HER (e.g. 40 mV (ηH210)) and OER (e.g. 110 mV (ηO210)) activities in a 1 M KOH electrolyte, which are much smaller than those of bare NF, Co@NF, NiCoO@NF and most reported materials. Furthermore, the stability test at 10 mA cm−2 for 20 h for the CoNi2S4/C3N4 electrocatalyst shows no obvious decay and proves the excellent stability of CoNi2S4/C3N4. In this work, the unique tentacle-like CoNi2S4/C3N4 nanowire nanostructure leads to minimized interfacial resistance and abundant channels during electrocatalysis. Moreover, comprehensive analysis results show that Ni(Co)OOH active sites, which are beneficial for excellent OER activity, partially form on the surface of CoNi2S4/C3N4 during electrocatalysis. Finally, the CoNi2S4/C3N4∥CoNi2S4/C3N4 two-electrode system is constructed and it exhibits a low-voltage water splitting capability of 1.40 V.
