Diffusion and Binding of Laponite Clay Nanoparticles into Collagen Fibers for the Formation of Leather Matrix

Jiabo Shi,Chunhua Wang,To Ngai,Wei Lin

Understanding accessibility and interactions of clay nanoparticles with collagen fibers is an important fundamental issue for the conversion of collagen to leather matrix. In this study, we have investigated the diffusion and binding of Laponite into the collagen fiber network. Our results indicate that the diffusion behaviors of Laponite into the collagen exhibit the Langmuir adsorption, verifying its affinity for collagen. The introduction of Laponite leads to a shift in the isoelectric point of collagen from ∼6.8 to ∼4.5, indicating the ionic bonding between the positively charged amino groups of the collagen and negatively charged Laponite under the tanning conditions. Fluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that Laponite nanoparticles can penetrate into collagen microstructure and evenly distributed onto collagen fibrils, not altering native D-periodic banding patterns of collagen fibrils. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy detections further demonstrate the presence of noncovalent interactions, namely, ionic and hydrogen bonding, between Laponite and collagen. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the use of Laponite as an emerging tanning agent in leather manufacture.

Super-adsorbent poly(acrylic acid)/laponite hydrogel with ultrahigh mechanical property for adsorption of methylene blue

Bo Gao,Hairong Yu,Jingya Wen,Hongju Zeng,Ting Liang,Fang Zuo,Changjing Cheng

Dye pollution has become a serious threat to environment and human health. Although versatile hydrogels have attracted intensive attentions due to their outstanding adsorption properties, the ultrahigh adsorption capacity and mechanical property are still two critical challenges for the practical applications. Herein, a super-adsorbent poly(acrylic acid)/laponite (PAAc/Lap) nanocomposite hydrogel with ultrahigh mechanical property and adsorption capacity of methylene blue (MB) is prepared by incorporating physical cross-linking with sparse chemical cross-linking. The hydrogel possesses porous 3D network structures and a fairly high water penetration with 1360 times of swelling ratio, which can allow the internal adsorption sites to be fully exposed and facilitate the adsorption. The adsorption capacity of MB can reach up to 3846 mg/g, which is almost the first time that a PAAc-based adsorbent could display superior adsorption capacity of more than 3800 mg/g towards MB. Important factors affecting the adsorption are also investigated, and the adsorption behavior is well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. More importantly, the appropriate physical cross-linking and sparse chemical cross-linking in the polymeric network endows hydrogel with superior mechanical properties. The tensile stress and strain are as high as 1.18 MPa and 2192%, which can facilitate the expansive applications and practical treatment. Mechanism analyses illustrate that the electrostatic interactions and cation-exchange between the functional groups of hydrogel and MB molecules contribute to the extraordinary adsorption ability. The proposed PAAc/Lap hydrogel with ultrahigh adsorption capacity and mechanical property is highly promising as an efficient super adsorbent for water treatment .

Laponite-Supported Gel Polymer Electrolyte with Multiple Lithium-Ion Transport Channels for Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Dongyun Wang,Biyu Jin,Jiao Huang,Xinyu Yao,Yongyuan Ren,Xiao Xu,Xiao Han,Fanqun Li,Xiaoli Zhan,Qinghua Zhang

Lithium metal batteries have emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation power systems. However, the high reactivity of lithium metal with liquid electrolytes has resulted in decreased battery safety and stability, which poses a significant challenge. Herein, we present a modified laponite-supported gel polymer electrolyte (LAP@PDOL GPE) that was fabricated using in situ polymerization initiated by a redox-initiating system at ambient temperature. The LAP@PDOL GPE effectively facilitates the dissociation of lithium salts via electrostatic interaction and simultaneously constructs multiple lithium-ion transport channels within the gel polymer network. This hierarchical GPE demonstrates a remarkable ionic conductivity of 5.16 × 10–4 S cm–1 at 30 °C. Furthermore, the robust laponite component of the LAP@PDOL GPE forms a barrier against Li dendrite growth while also participating in the establishment of a stable electrode/electrolyte interface with Si-rich components. The in situ polymerization process further improves the interfacial contact, enabling the LiFePO4/LAP@PDOL GPE/Li cell to exhibit an impressive capacity of 137 mAh g–1 at 1C, with a capacity retention of 98.5% even after 400 cycles. In summary, the developed LAP@PDOL GPE shows great potential in addressing the critical issues of safety and stability associated with lithium metal batteries while also delivering improved electrochemical performance.

High-density immobilization of potassium copper hexacyanoferrate in poly(acrylic acid)/laponite hydrogel for enhanced Cs+ removal

Bo Gao,Hai-Rong Yu,Hui-Yao Zhang,Ting Liang,Chang-Jing Cheng

As the risk of radioactive waste generated in large quantities is emerging, rapid and selective removal and decontamination of cesium ions (Cs + ) from nuclear waste have become a significant issue for environmental protection and human health. Herein, a novel potassium copper hexacyanoferrate (KCuHCF)-embedded poly(acrylic acid)/laponite (PAAc/Lap-HCF) hydrogel has been developed by a facile and low-cost fabrication route for highly effective and selective Cs + adsorption. The diffusion-derived KCuHCF formation in the nanocomposite hydrogel via layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly can facilitate the preservation of the 3D-interconnected hydrogel structure and the dispersion of KCuHCF particles, which contribute to high-density immobilization of stable KCuHCF (~57.73 wt%) in the matrix. The adsorbent shows enhanced Cs + removal properties in terms of fast kinetics (>90% removal for 20 mg/L of Cs + within 1 h), stability (>115 mg/g in wide pH value of 2–11), high adsorption capacity (146.22 mg/g) and selectivity ( K d = 1.3 ×10 5 mL/g, 1 mg/L Cs + in highly competitive seawater). Such excellent characteristics with fast kinetics are mainly due to the high ion accessibility from the inherent nature of hydrogels and the highly loaded KCuHCF particles in the composites. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm obey the pseudo-second-order model and the dual-site Langmuir adsorption model, respectively. This nanocomposite hydrogel prepared in our work shows enhanced performance on removal of Cs + in aqueous solution, which has a good application prospect in treating radioactive wastewater .

Jiabo Shi,Li Sheng,Meng Chen,Xiaoyi Wu,Xiaojie Li,Yan Qin Tan

Sustainable and intelligent packaging systems, utilizing biomass-derived matrix and bioactive indicators represent promising approaches for real-time detection and monitoring of freshness of food, as well as prolonging the shelf-life and improving the quality and safety of food products. Herein, we reported pH-responsive collagen nanocomposite films reinforced by curcumin-loaded Laponite nanoplatelets which could act as smart indicators for monitoring the freshness of shrimps. Caffeic acid, as a bio-based modifier, was covalently grafted onto the surfaces of the nanoplatelets loaded with curcumin . The collagen nanocomposite films were fabricated by the incorporation of functionalized nanoplatelets through all-aqueous casting-evaporation approach. The triple-helical structure of collagen molecules was stabilized by the functionalized nanoplatelets mainly through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions with uniform distribution into the film matrix. Moreover, the resultant nanocomposite films not only demonstrated favorable hydrophobicity and water vapor barrier properties, but also exhibited effective antioxidant activity and anticipated color responsiveness to pH changes and NH 3 presence. The consistent changes in color of the nanocomposite film with the shrimps following days of storage supported its feasibility and potential for monitoring the freshness of shrimps. Therefore, we envision that the developed collagen-based nanocomposite films showcase great potential in the application of sustainable and intelligent packaging system for dynamic visualization of seafood freshness.

Mussel-Inspired TA-Laponite-Doped Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced Hydrogels as Antibacterial Strain Sensors with High Mechanical Toughness

Xiaotao Liang,Wang Xu,Yanmin Ma,Xue Lv

Flexible hydrogel sensors have garnered significant interest owing to their biocompatibility and tissue similarity. Nevertheless, challenges such as inadequate mechanical strength, poor interface adhesion, lack of antimicrobial properties, and low conductivity impeded their practical utilization. This research aimed to address traditional hydrogels’ poor mechanical strength, interface adhesion issues, and lack of antibacterial properties, expanding their applications. Drawing inspiration from mussel adhesion, we crafted an innovative hydrogel using tannic acid (TA) as an adhesive, enhanced with ionic liquids (ILs) for the exfoliation of magnesium lithium silicate (Laponite) for mechanical improvement and carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs) for electrical enhancement. The prepared PAM/Lap-IL/TA/c-MWCNTs hydrogel showed a fracture stress of 461 kPa and a notable strain of 6800%, with an outstanding adhesive capacity (163 N/m). The prepared sensor can successfully monitor various human movements and exhibits good electrical conductivity (16.4 S/cm, GF = 3.15), quick reaction time (200 ms), and notable antibacterial activity. Crucially, this versatile conductive hydrogel has potential applications in electronic products and medical diagnostic health monitoring.

The utilization of low molecular weight heparin-poloxamer associated Laponite nanoplatform for safe and efficient tumor therapy

Jinyu Li,Hao Pan,Sen Qiao,Yunjian Li,Jie Wang,Wei Liu,Weisan Pan

In the present investigation, we have synthesized the dalteparin which is a kind of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and possess the antitumor and antiangiogenic efficacy with carboxylates poloxamer 407 to form a heparin-poloxamer nanogel (HP copolymer). The complex HP is capable of enhancing the efficacies, minimizing the side effects of dalteparin and exhibiting a good thermosensitivity. Therewith, the synthetic Laponite RDS (LR) nanosilicate embarked with doxorubicin (DOX) at a satisfactory high drug entrapment efficiency was integrated with the complex HP and thus constituted a newfangled biocompatible injectable temperature-sensitive hydrogel. To our delight, consociation with 2.5 w/v % of LR nanodisks, HP at the concentration of 5 w/v % was sufficient to execute the solution-gel transition at animal heat, while 17.5 w/v % of P-407 was needed for fabricating the LR-P hydrogel. Simultaneously, LR-HP possesses a more preferable syringeability. Furthermore, the release behavior in vitro for the DOX@LR-HP demonstrated as extended and controlled manner, wherein, the drug-eluting profile was regulated by the LR nanocomposites. Moreover, based on synergic action of heparin and drug, DOX@LR-HP hydrogels demonstrated the best antitumor efficacy in vitro and in vivo. What is noteworthy is that through the course of treatment, the reflected anticancer efficacy direct at the established xenograft S180 sarcoma tumor was provided by the single administration of the DOX@LR-HP hybrid gel. This excellent long-term sustainable-anticancer function in vivo demonstrating the prospect of this nanohybrid-gel combination as an estimable focal drug delivery vehicle for treatment of cancer.

Laponite Modified Methacryloyl Gelatin Hydrogel with Controlled Release of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A for Bone Regeneration

Baoguo Mi,Jitao Zhang,Hailan Meng,Yixin Xu,Jiajun Xie,Dingjun Hao,Lequn Shan

Reconstruction of bone defects has long been a major clinical challenge. Limited by the various shortcomings of conventional treatment like autologous bone grafting and inorganic substitutes, the development of novel bone repairing strategies is on top priority. Injectable biomimetic hydrogels that deliver stem cells and growth factors in a minimally invasive manner can effectively promote bone regeneration and thus represent a promising alternative. Therefore, in this study, we designed and constructed an injectable nanocomposite hydrogel co-loaded with Laponite (Lap) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) through a simplified and convenient scheme of physical co-mixing (G@Lap/VEGF). The introduced Lap not only optimized the injectability of GelMA by the electrostatic force between the nanoparticles, but also significantly delayed the release of VEGF-A. In addition, Lap promoted high expression of osteogenic biomarkers in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and enhanced the matrix mineralization. Besides, VEGF-A exerted chemotactic effects recruiting endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and inducing neovascularization. Histological and micro-CT results demonstrated that the critical-sized calvarial bone defect lesions in the SD rats after treated with G@Lap/VEGF exhibited significant in vivo bone repairing. In conclusion, the injectable G@Lap/VEGF nanocomposite hydrogel constructed in our study is highly promising for clinical transformation and applications, providing a convenient and simplified scheme for clinical bone repairing, and contributing to the further development of the injectable biomimetic hydrogels.

Typical synthesis of an iron-modified Laponite @diatomite composite for photo-Fenton degradation of methyl orange dyes

Nan Dai,Shuang Yi,Xiaotian Zhang,Li Feng,Hui Ding,Dan Song,Xiaoying Liu,Jinsong Rao,Yuxin Zhang

A typical adsorption modification method was employed to load ferrous ions on the Laponite@diatomite composite with 3D-2D morphology for photo-Fenton. Further, various characterization analyses were performed on the microscopic morphology and structure of the modified Laponite@diatomite. The removal ability of ferrous ion-modified Laponite@diatomite (Fe-La@D) photo-Fenton-oxidative cationic dyes under different raw material concentrations, H 2 O 2 content, MO concentration and light environment was discussed. Its reusability and photo-Fenton mechanism were further investigated. The study found that the ferrous ion-modified Laponite @diatomite is a catalyst with good photo-Fenton performance, and the MO degradation rate in 240 min can reach 99 % under the optimal reaction conditions. After modification, ferrous ions were successfully intercalated between the Laponite layers, and the forbidden band width of the material was reduced. And with the increase of catalyst dosage and H 2 O 2 content, the photo-Fenton reaction rate also increases. While the initial concentration of MO increases, the reaction rate decreases accordingly. Cycling tests demonstrate the structural stability and reusability of the catalyst. EPR spectra showed the generation of hydroxyl radicals , which are important substances in the degradation process. This work provides an idea for the synthesis of economical and ideal photo-Fenton catalysts, which has broad application prospects.

Preparation and in vitro evaluation of biological agents based on Zinc-laponite- curcumin incorporated in alginate hydrogel

Karimi Hajishoreh Negar,Dadashpour Mehdi,Akbarzadeh Abolfazl

Due to their outstanding structures and properties, three-dimensional (3D) hydrogels and nanoparticles have been widely studied and indicated a very high potential for medical, therapeutic, and diagnostic applications. However, hydrogels and nanoparticles systems have particular drawbacks that limit their widespread applications. In recent years, the incorporation of nanostructured systems into hydrogel has been developed as a novel way for the formation of new biomaterials with various functions to solve biomedical challenges. In this study, alginate-loaded Zinc- laponite—curcumin (Zn/La/Cur) nanocomposites were fabricated via ionic cross-linking. The prepared nanocomposite hydrogels were characterized via FTIR and FE-SEM. Moreover, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was used to study the elements of the Zn/La/Cur nanocomposite. The NIH3T3 fibroblast cell line was utilized for the MTT assay to determine the cell viability of the fabricated alginate-loaded Zn/La/Cur nanocomposites. MTT results demonstrated that there was no evidence of toxicity in the samples. These outcomes suggest that applying Al/Zn/La/Cur nanocomposite as a biological agent could be a novel tissue engineering strategy for treating soft tissue disorders.Graphical Abstract

Leucine-activated nanohybrid biofilm for skin regeneration via improving cell affinity and neovascularization capacity

Xiajie Lin,Yamin Li,Wei Luo,Lan Xiao,Zeren Zhang,Jinzhong Zhao,Changsheng Liu,Yulin Li

The accumulation of skin diseases has increased the need for biomimicking materials with high bioactivity and biosafety for wound healing, where how to improve the cell affinity of the skin regenerative materials as well as their neovascularization capacity is a key factor for rapid regeneration of the injured skin tissue. In the current study, we developed an advanced type of biodegradable nanofibrous biofilm which can attract skin-related cells and accelerate blood vessel formation for skin regeneration. Firstly, bioactive nanohybrids (LEU@LP) were fabricated via in situ doping of the nutrient amino acid leucine (beneficial for fibroblast proliferation and protein synthesis) into LAPONITE® nanodisks (enriched in Mg and Si favorable for vascularization). LEU@LP nanoparticles were then hybridized with a biodegradable polylactide (PLA) nanofibrous mesh via an airbrushing technique, followed by a subsequent ammonia plasma surface treatment to improve PLA's hydrophilicity to increase cell affinity. The resulting hybrid biofilms with skin-biomimicking nanofibrous structural networks can promote cell adhesion, spreading, migration and proliferation of fibroblasts, leading to the ideal skin wound healing (with blood vessel formation and hair follicle regeneration), probably attributed to their better hydrophilicity to promote cell affinity and the capacity of sustainable release of leucine (beneficial for fibroblasts proliferation) and the composition provision (Mg and Si which are beneficial for neovascularization).

Construction of ZIF-8 modified laponite to enable polyvinylidene fluoride-based solid-state electrolyte with high lithium flux

Shaodong Bai,Jianjiang Mao,Fengshou Yu,Fei Cheng

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) can replace the diaphragm and electrolyte in the traditional battery to solve safety perils such as electrolyte leakage and combustion, while their practical application is greatly hindered by their low ionic conductivity and poor ability to inhibit lithium dendrites. Herein, a laponite (LAP)/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) hybrid material modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based composite polymer electrolytes (CPE) is reported. The in-situ modification of ZIF-8 induced by electrostatic interactions between LAP layers not only improves the dispersion of LAP, but also acts as an external bridge through hydrogen bonding with PVDF to construct a stable conductive network. The extended and compatible polymer-nanofiller hybrid interface enables continuous ion migration paths and effectively reduce the crystallinity of PVDF. Moreover, the Lewis acid site and high porosity of ZIF-8 can not only promote the dissociation of lithium bis (trifluoromethanesulphonyl) imide (LiTFSI), but also limit the movement of TFSI − , further improving the ionic conductivity. Benefiting from the synergistic enhancement effect of hybrid interface, the obtained CPE demonstrated an excellent ionic conductivity of 6.77 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature and a satisfactory ion transference number of 0.60 together with superior electrochemical window of 5.3 V and good mechanical strength. The assembled Li metal battery shows a high capacity retention rate is 95 % after 150 cycles at 1C, indicating a significant inhibitory effect on lithium dendrites.
