A highly conductive and stable hybrid solid electrolyte for high voltage lithium metal batteries

Jiangtao Yu,Yin Hu,Xinyu Ma,Xiuyang Zou,Haojun Qi,Yingjie Zhou,Feng Yan

Understanding Li+ migration behavior in hybrid solid-state electrolytes (HSEs) is essential for realizing the conductivity of HSE and high energy density Li metal batteries. Here, a highly conductive HSE with a continuous lithium-ion (Li+) transport pathway consisting of an anionic-type single Li+ conductor polymer (lithium taurine-grafted poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)-Lix, x represents the amount of lithium taurine)) and Li1.4Al0.4Ti1.6(PO4)3 (LATP) particles are prepared for solid-state lithium metal batteries. The prepared ionomer P(VDF-HFP)-Lix can enhance the transmission efficiency of Li+ in the polymer substrate, forming a “Li+ transport bridge” between inorganic particles to provide rapid and continuous Li+ transmission channels in HSE, and eliminating interface charge accumulation caused by an excessive impedance difference of the polymer/ceramic. The P(VDF-HFP)-Li10-50LATP HSE possesses high ionic conductivity (7.88 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C), Li+ transference number (tLi+ = 0.61) and electrochemical stability (>5.16 V vs. Li+/Li). Furthermore, the Li‖HSE‖Li symmetrical battery achieves a stability over more than 1000 h at 0.1 mA cm−2, while the HSE-based LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NCM622)‖Li and LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO)‖Li batteries show high specific capacity (160 mA h g−1 and 126.8 mA h g−1 at 0.5C) and good cycling stability (capacity retention of 93% and 80% after 200 cycles, respectively). This work provides a an effective to achieve high ionic conductivity and stability for HSEs, simultaneously.

Effect of boron-based glass additives on the ionic conductivity of Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 solid electrolyte

Jingrui Kang,Xu Guo,Rui Gu,Yi Tang,Honglei Hao,Yu Lan,Li Jin,Xiaoyong Wei

Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) is a promising candidate as the solid electrolyte in energy storage devices. For practical considerations, the most common ways to ameliorate the low density and high ionic resistance of LATP are usually to use glass additives. In this work, the boron-based (B 2 O 3 , B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -PbO (BSP), and B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -K 2 O-Al 2 O 3 (BSKA)) glass are added into LATP by solid method. As the results, the main diffraction peaks of all prepared samples maintain the NASICON-type with the R-3c space group. Meanwhile, the symmetric stretching vibrations of O-P-O bands is redshifted with the addition of boron-based glass, which plays a positive role in bulk conductivity. Additionally, the introduction of boron-based glass additives is effective to increase the grain sizes of the LATP samples. The relative density of the sample is obtained from 93.37% to 95.42%. Furthermore, the total conductivities of 1.33 × 10 −4 , 1.37 × 10 −4 , 1.97 × 10 −4 S cm −1 are obtained in ceramic samples after B 2 O 3 , BSP and BSKA glass additives adding, respectively. The activation energy shows a reduction of 5.26% to 0.36 eV after BSP and BSKA glass adding. Satisfactorily, B 2 O 3 , BSP and BSKA glass have a certain influence on the conductivity, and bear a more favorable argument for the regulation of the morphology and density in the future.

In Situ Curing Technology for Dual Ceramic Composed by Organic–Inorganic Functional Polymer Gel Electrolyte for Dendritic-Free and Robust Lithium–Metal Batteries

Sajid Hussain Siyal,Muhammad Sufyan Javed,Ashique Hussain Jatoi,Jin-Le Lan,Yunhua Yu,Muhammad Saleem,Xiaoping Yang

Lithium–metal batteries (LiMBs) are promising energy storage devices due to the high capacity and minimum negative electrochemical potential. Nevertheless, their concrete applications remain disturbed by unbalanced electrolyte–electrode interfaces, limited electrochemical window, and high risk. Herein, a novel strategy to obtain dual ceramic-based electrolytes that possesses a great potential in energy storages and higher level of energy densities in LiMBs. Dual-ceramic (lithium aluminum titanium phosphate -lithium lanthanum titanium oxide (LATP-LLTO)) gel polymer electrolyte (DCGPE) film developed via the curable system aims to prepare flexible Li + interpenetrating network film to integrate the two ceramic structures with polyethylene oxide (PEO) to yield the free-standing electrolytes film for better battery safety and desired interfacial stability. The DCGPEs films present a satisfactory electrochemical performance, including good ionic conductivity, large transference number, and wide electrochemical stability window at room temperature. Most importantly, the fundamental function of LATP and LLTO is to support building a stable solid-electrolyte-interphase and limits the growth of dendrites. Thus, prepared dual ceramic-based electrolytes effectively render to inhibit lithium dendrite growth in a symmetrical cell Li//PEO + 10% LATP + 15% LLTO//Li test during charge/discharge at a current density of 2 and 0.25 mA cm −2 above 2400 h without short-circuiting occurrence at room temperature. Besides, the battery assembled of LiFePO 4 /PEO + 10% LATP + 20% LLTO/Li exhibits superior cyclic stability with high Coulombic efficiency. This study recommends that the binary network structures of Li-ion conductor help to design a prime solution of promising electrolyte for high-performance LiMBs applications.

Flexible and free-standing La0.33Ti2(PO4)3/C nanofibers film as a novel high-performance anode for sodium- and potassium-ion batteries

Dai Jing,Jing Jian,Yang Jian-Ping,Zhang Wen,Liu Shao-Xiong,Wang Qian-Fu,Wen Jia-Xing,Hu Hai,Li Hui-Fang,Liu Li

Na superionic conductor (NASICON)-type La 0.33 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (LaTP) is firstly proposed as sodium/potassium storage materials. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that LaTP has good electronic character and low Na + /K + migration barriers. The flexible La 0.33 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C nanofiber film is synthesized via electrostatic spinning and investigated as free-standing electrode applied to sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) in this work. The low band gap and Na + /K + migration barriers of LaTP, unique morphology, and complete conductive carbon net allow the La 0.33 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C nanofibers film to deliver high capacity (296.3 mAh·g −1 for SIBs and 235.8 mAh·g −1 for PIBs), excellent rate performance (142.5 mAh·g −1 for SIBs and 50.5 mAh·g −1 for PIBs at 1.00 A·g −1 ), and superior cyclability above 1000 cycles. The full-cell tests show that the material has a good application prospect, indicating a promising flexible anode material for SIBs and PIBs. Graphical abstract

In-situ construction of a LiI@Li-Bi composite interlayer for stable Li|LATP interface in solid-state lithium batteries

Jiahao Fan,Mingdao Zhang,Li Song,Yachao Jin

BiI 3 drop-casting method is applied to prepare B-LATP electrolyte. • The addition of BiI 3 reduces interfacial resistance. • The addition of BiI 3 enhances the lithiophilicity of the material. • B-LATP achieves a critical current density of 3.7 mA cm −2 . NASICON-type Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) solid-state electrolyte (SSE) is considered a promising candidate for solid-state lithium metal batteries (SLMB) due to its high room-temperature, Li-ion conductivity and superior air stability. However, its practical application is hindered by electro-chemo-mechanical degradation at the Li|LATP interface, including lithium dendrite penetration and poor physical contact. Rational interfacial design from a chemical compatibility synergistic perspective is therefore imperative. Herein, we report the in-situ construction of a multifunctional LiI@Li-Bi composite interlayer at the Li|LATP interface via a conversion reaction between a BiI 3 thin film and lithium metal. This tailored interlayer consists of electronically insulating LiI and a lithiophilic Li–Bi alloy. It effectively improves interfacial contact, reduces interfacial resistance, suppresses side reactions, and homogenizes Li-ion flux, thereby inhibiting dendrite growth. The Li|B-LATP|Li symmetric cell achieves a critical current density of 3.7 mA cm −2 and maintains stable cycling for over 600 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, the LiFePO 4 |B-LATP|Li solid-state full cell exhibits stable cycling performance at 0.1 C and room temperature. These results highlight the critical role of rational Li|LATP interface design and provide a facile strategy for optimizing interfacial compatibility and addressing interfacial challenges in SLMBs. This simple method utilizes a conversion reaction between a BiI 3 thin film and Li metal to in-situ form a LiI@Li-Bi composite interlayer on LATP. The resulting interlayer improves interfacial contact, enhancing cycling stability of both symmetric and full cells. Download: Download high-res image (219KB) Download: Download full-size image

Solid-State Lithium Batteries with Cathode-Supported Composite Solid Electrolytes Enabling High-Rate Capability and Excellent Cyclic Performance

Kang-Feng Chang,Pradeep Kumar Panda,Chien-Te Hsieh,Po-Chih Yang,Navish Kataria,Kuan Shiong Khoo

In this study, robust composite solid electrolytes were developed and employed to enhance the performance of Li-metal batteries significantly. The robust composite solid electrolytes are composed of a soft polymer, poly(ethylene oxide), a Li salt, bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), and super ionic conductive ceramic fillers such as Li1.5Al0.5Ti1.5(PO4)3(LATP), and Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12(LLZTO). The main goal of this study is to enhance the electrochemical stability and ionic conductivity. The ionic conductivities of the composite solid electrolytes were found to be 2.08 × 10−4and 1.64 × 10−4S cm−1with the introduction of LATP and LLZTO fillers, respectively. The results prove that the fabricated solid electrolyte was electrochemical stable at voltage exceeding 4.25 V vs. Li/Li+. The internal resistance of the solid electrolyte significantly reduced compared to gel electrolyte. This reduction can be attributed to the alleviation of bulk electrolyte, charge-transfer, and interfacial electrolyte/electrode impedance. When LiFePO4cathode sheets are coated with a composite solid electrolyte containing LATP powders, the resulting Li-metal battery displays high capacity at 5 C (with a capacity retention of 65.2% compared to the original capacity at 0.2 C) as well as superior cyclic stability and excellent Coulombic efficiency (>99.5%, 200 cycles). These results confirm that the composite solid electrolyte acts as a protective layer which has the ability to prevent the growth of Li dendrites. Consequently, the fabricated electrolyte configuration can be engineered to enable high energy/power density and electrochemical stable cyclability in Li-metal batteries.

Oxygen Evolution Barrier and Lithium-Ion Transport Promotion Effects of MOF-LATP Composite Solid Electrolyte for High-Energy-Density Lithium Batteries

Jia-Wen Zhang,Da-Yong Wu,Cong Xia,Xue-Ting Wang,Yue Li,Jian-Hua Cao

High-energy-density lithium-ion batteries are prone to cathode oxygen evolution, which triggers detrimental crosstalk reactions and potential thermal runaway. In this study, a trilayer functional composite separator is rationally designed by screening metal–organic framework (MOF) and depositing optimized UiO-66-F combined with the inorganic solid electrolyte (LATP) on the cathode-facing side of a polypropylene (PP) substrate, with a PVDF-HFP layer coated on the opposite side. The as-prepared separator exhibits a low oxygen transmission rate of 106.2 s/(in2·100 mL·0.1 kPa) and an oxygen adsorption capacity of 0.99 cc·g–1 (293 K, 1 Torr). Electrochemical characterization reveals a high room-temperature ionic conductivity of 1.30 × 10–3 S·cm–1, a lithium-ion transference number of 0.72, and a wide electrochemical window of 5.4 V. When applied in NCM811||C pouch cells, the composite separator significantly suppresses gas evolution during overcharge (1C, 3 h) and maintains 90.8% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 1C. Furthermore, NCM811||Li cells achieve 79.4% retention after 500 cycles at 1C. Interfacial analysis confirms that the MOF layer effectively captures cathode-released oxygen, while synergistically cooperating with the PVDF-HFP layer to construct a stable, LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), thereby significantly boosting the electrochemical performance and safety of high-voltage lithium-ion batteries.

Solid Polymer Electrolyte Based on Polymerized Ionic Liquid for High Performance All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

Furui Ma,Zengqi Zhang,Wenchao Yan,Xiaodi Ma,Deye Sun,Yongcheng Jin,Xiaochun Chen,Kuang He

Polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) have several advantages over ionic liquids, such as easy handling, good electrochemical performance, and chemical compatibility. In this research, a solid-state electrolyte composite membrane was successfully fabricated by using an imidazolium-based polymerized ionic liquid as polymer matrix, a kind of porous fiber cloth as rigid frame, and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) as lithium salt. The ionic conductivity of the composite electrolyte with 2.0 mol/kg LiTFSI is 7.78 × 10–5 S cm–1 at 30 °C and reaches 5.92 × 10–4 S cm–1 at 60 °C, which is considered a satisfactory value for potential application in lithium-ion batteries. The specific discharge capacity of the LiFePO4/Li cell with as-prepared composite electrolyte is 138.4 mAh g–1, and 90% of the discharge capacity is retained after 250 cycles at 60 °C. In order to further improve the conductivity, Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) ceramic electrolyte particles are dispersed in a PIL polymer matrix to prepare the PIL-LiTFSI-LATP composite electrolyte. LiFePO4/Li cells using PIL-LiTFSI-LATP (10 wt % LATP) as a solid-state electrolyte exhibit excellent rate performance and high capacity retention (close to 97% after 250 cycles at 60 °C). This work may provide a unique way to prepare a new series of electrolytes for high-performance solid-state lithium batteries.

Co-Engineering of In Situ Lithium Compensation and Oxygen-Anchoring Modulation Enables Thermochemically Stabilized NCM811-LATP Composite Cathodes for Ultra-Long Cyclability

Lifan Wang,Pengfei Jiang,Yiheng Wu,Ruixiang Li,Min Chen,Xindong Wang,Chun Zhan,Guicheng Liu

The development of high-energy all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs) is hindered by interfacial incompatibility between Ni-rich layered oxides (LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 , NCM811) and solid electrolytes (Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 , LATP), where co-sintering-induced Li + depletion and the subsequent oxygen release synergistically degrade electrochemical performance. Here, a dual-functional interface engineering strategy is developed through thermochemical coordination of dynamic lithium compensation and oxygen-anchoring modulation. Incorporation of 10 wt.% LiOH effectively suppresses cation interdiffusion during 700 °C co-sintering, while La 4 NiLiO 8 lithium–oxygen conductor stabilizes lattice oxygen via vacancy passivation, thus eventually protecting NCM811 from thermal decomposition (post-sintering XRD, XPS, and TEM). The optimized NCM811-LATP composite cathode achieves a high initial capacity of 217.1 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C with 80% capacity retention over 248 cycles a 143% lifespan improvement compared to baseline systems, while maintaining charge-transfer impedance below 97.8 Ω (EIS) and suppressing layered-to-spinel phase transitions (post-cycling TEM). This work establishes a universal paradigm for oxygen-interface co-stabilization in ASSLIBs, balancing thermochemical stability with interfacial ion transport to unlock ultra-stable cycling in high-energy-density solid-state systems.

Li1.4Al0.4Ti1.6(PO4)3 nanoparticle-reinforced solid polymer electrolytes for all-solid-state lithium batteries

Lehao Liu,Lihua Chu,Bing Jiang,Meicheng Li

The applications of solid polymer electrolytes in all-solid-state Li-ion batteries are restricted by their low ion conductivities at room temperature and poor mechanical and thermal stabilities. Herein, Li 1.4 Al 0.4 Ti 1.6 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) electrolyte nanoparticles were used as active fillers to improve the properties of polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based electrolytes. The ion conductivity of the composite electrolyte with 1 wt% LATP increased to 1.2 × 10 −5  S/cm at room temperature, because of the effective inhibition of the PEO matrix crystallization by the high-conductivity LATP nanofillers . The electrochemical, mechanical and thermal stabilities were also enhanced by the LATP nanofillers. The LATP-filled composite electrolytes can effectively block Li dendrites in symmetric Li/electrolyte/Li cells during repeated Li stripping/plating with a current density of 0.10 mA/cm 2 for 600 h at 30 °C. Furthermore, the LATP-based all-solid-state LiFePO 4 /Li cells exhibited higher reversible capacity (152 mAh/g at 0.10 C), cycling stability (84% after 20 cycles at 50 °C) and rate capability than the LATP-free cells.

Dual-lithium-salt and continuous Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 ion-conduction network for high-performance polyvinylidene fluoride-based solid polymer electrolytes

Zhenyuan Shi,Shuanghui Li,Bolin Chen,Zihan Chen,Tao Li,Yingxue Chen,Dandan Wang,Liming Lin,Jun Gao,Jingzheng Weng,Minquan Tian

To enhance the lithium ion transport properties of solid polymer electrolytes, a novel lithium salt—poly(acrylic acid)–boric acid–anhydrous lithium hydroxide–oxalic acid composite (LiPAAOB)—was designed and synthesized. This composite lithium salt was introduced into a polymer system with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the matrix, along with LiTFSI, and NASICON-structured Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) was added as an inorganic filler. The resulting solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) exhibits a three-dimensional ion conduction network. LiPAAOB, with its rich carboxyl and borate ester structures, effectively stabilizes anions, increases lithium salt dissociation, and promotes the ordered migration of Li + by providing continuous lithium-affinitive functional groups, significantly improving the Li + transference number. LATP, as an inorganic filler, forms a three-dimensional spatial framework in the polymer system, offering more pathways for Li + migration. This solid polymer electrolyte achieved an ion conductivity of up to 2.34 × 10 −3  S·cm −1 , a Li + transfer number of 0.7 and an enlarged electrochemical window of 5.3 V (vs. Li + /Li), exhibiting excellent electrochemical reversibility. The assembled LiFePO₄|LiPAAOB@LATP SPE|Li full cell retained 90.2 % of its capacity after 500 cycles at 1C rate, and the Li symmetric cell operated stably for over 1800 h at a current density of 0.2 mA·cm −2 , demonstrating excellent interface compatibility and dendrite suppression capability.

Stabilizing solid electrolyte/Li interface via polymer-in-salt artificial protection layer for high-rate and stable lithium metal batteries

Long Pan,Shuo Sun,Genxi Yu,Xiong Xiong Liu,Shengfa Feng,Wei Zhang,Muhammadali Turgunov,Yaping Wang,ZhengMing Sun

Solid electrolytes are fundamental for next-generation solid-state Li-metal batteries that promise high energy density and safety. However, various solid electrolytes suffer from chemical/electrochemical instability against Li metal and poor interfacial contact with electrodes. Herein, a polymer-in-salt (PiS) artificial protection layer composed of fluoropolymer in highly-concentrated lithium salt (labeled as PiSPL) is introduced to address these problems using NASICON-type Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) as a typical solid electrolyte . The resulted PiSPL layer exhibits small thickness (10 μm), good chemical/electrochemical stability, and excellent ionic conductivity (0.5 and 1.8 mS cm −1 at 25 and 60 °C, respectively). These properties endow the LATP/Li interface with improved contact, favorable Li + diffusion, and, most importantly, inhibited interfacial reactions, which is examined using ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical analyses and morphological observations. Consequently, Li||LATP@PiSPL||Li symmetric cells can deliver small overpotentials at various current densities and long lifetime at 0.16 mA cm −2 over 400 h. On the contrary, the same configuration cells with LATP die after only 50 h. Moreover, the LiFePO 4 ||LATP@PiSPL||Li solid-state full cells exhibit excellent rate capability (124.0 mA h g −1 at 2.0C) and cyclability (148.9 and 140.6 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.2C and 300 cycles at 1.0C, respectively). The PiS strategy represents a general and effective approach to stabilize various solid electrolyte/Li interfaces to push solid-state Li-metal batteries forward.
