Sustainable and intelligent packaging systems, utilizing biomass-derived matrix and bioactive indicators represent promising approaches for real-time detection and monitoring of freshness of food, as well as prolonging the shelf-life and improving the quality and safety of food products. Herein, we reported pH-responsive collagen nanocomposite films reinforced by curcumin-loaded Laponite nanoplatelets which could act as smart indicators for monitoring the freshness of shrimps. Caffeic acid, as a bio-based modifier, was covalently grafted onto the surfaces of the nanoplatelets loaded with curcumin . The collagen nanocomposite films were fabricated by the incorporation of functionalized nanoplatelets through all-aqueous casting-evaporation approach. The triple-helical structure of collagen molecules was stabilized by the functionalized nanoplatelets mainly through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions with uniform distribution into the film matrix. Moreover, the resultant nanocomposite films not only demonstrated favorable hydrophobicity and water vapor barrier properties, but also exhibited effective antioxidant activity and anticipated color responsiveness to pH changes and NH 3 presence. The consistent changes in color of the nanocomposite film with the shrimps following days of storage supported its feasibility and potential for monitoring the freshness of shrimps. Therefore, we envision that the developed collagen-based nanocomposite films showcase great potential in the application of sustainable and intelligent packaging system for dynamic visualization of seafood freshness.

As the risk of radioactive waste generated in large quantities is emerging, rapid and selective removal and decontamination of cesium ions (Cs + ) from nuclear waste have become a significant issue for environmental protection and human health. Herein, a novel potassium copper hexacyanoferrate (KCuHCF)-embedded poly(acrylic acid)/laponite (PAAc/Lap-HCF) hydrogel has been developed by a facile and low-cost fabrication route for highly effective and selective Cs + adsorption. The diffusion-derived KCuHCF formation in the nanocomposite hydrogel via layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly can facilitate the preservation of the 3D-interconnected hydrogel structure and the dispersion of KCuHCF particles, which contribute to high-density immobilization of stable KCuHCF (~57.73 wt%) in the matrix. The adsorbent shows enhanced Cs + removal properties in terms of fast kinetics (>90% removal for 20 mg/L of Cs + within 1 h), stability (>115 mg/g in wide pH value of 2–11), high adsorption capacity (146.22 mg/g) and selectivity ( K d = 1.3 ×10 5 mL/g, 1 mg/L Cs + in highly competitive seawater). Such excellent characteristics with fast kinetics are mainly due to the high ion accessibility from the inherent nature of hydrogels and the highly loaded KCuHCF particles in the composites. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm obey the pseudo-second-order model and the dual-site Langmuir adsorption model, respectively. This nanocomposite hydrogel prepared in our work shows enhanced performance on removal of Cs + in aqueous solution, which has a good application prospect in treating radioactive wastewater .

The widespread use of portable electronic devices has sparked interest in zinc-ion hybrid capacitors as an ecofriendly, safe, and cost-efficient energy storage solution. However, balancing the mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity of zinc-ion hybrid capacitor electrolytes presents a significant challenge. This study introduces a polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAM) electrolyte containing nanoparticle Laponite (Lap), demonstrating outstanding mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity. Furthermore, when ZnSO4 is introduced into the gel electrolyte, it reduces system dependence and decreases the water freezing point, expanding the hydrogel’s operational temperature range. Consequently, the prepared gel electrolyte has a high ionic conductivity of 45.3 mS·cm–1 and excellent flexibility and can operate stably in both zinc-ion hybrid capacitors and sensors. This research provides an effective approach for developing hydrogel electrolytes with broad voltage windows, high ionic conductivity, and favorable mechanical characteristics.

Inorganic-organic hybrid coatings prepared via an impregnation assembly of eco-friendly materials exhibited dramatically flame-retardant properties on flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF). A nickel-complex of tea polyphenols (TP-Ni) was synthesized, and TP-Ni and laponite (LAP) were coated on the surface of FPUF. LAP/TP-Ni can be homogeneously dispersed on the surface of FPUF. Moreover, the melt-dripping phenomenon of 1LAP/4TP-Ni/FPUF was completely inhibited during the vertical flame test (UL-94) with 41.2 wt% weight gain, and it showed self-extinguished behaviors at once and passed the UL-94 V-0 rating. Additionally, the values of peak heat release rate and peak smoke production rate of 1LAP/4TP-Ni/FPUF were reduced by 71.6% and 60.9%, compared with the control. The content of gaseous toxic substances, such as CO and NCO-containing compounds, was also decreased, indicating the effect of TP-Ni/LAP on the toxicity suppression of flame-retardant FPUF. Encouragingly, the coatings deteriorated the tensile property of FPUF inconspicuously. Interestingly, the coatings do not contain traditional flame retardant elements, which offers an innovative approach for designing flame retardants. Thus, these inorganic-organic hybrid coatings show the promising potential to decrease the fire risk of FPUF.

The extrusion 3D printing of hydrogels has evolved as a promising approach that can be applied for specific tissue repair. However, the printing process of hydrogel scaffolds with high shape fidelity is inseparable from the complex crosslinking strategy, which significantly increases the difficulty and complexity of printing. The aim of this study was to develop a printable hydrogel that can extrude at room temperature and print scaffolds with high shape fidelity without any auxiliary crosslinking during the printing process. To this end, a novel formulation consisting of a Laponite suspension with a high solid concentration and a gelatine methacrylate (GelMA) nanocomposite hydrogel was developed. A homogeneously dispersed high-concentration (up to 20% w/v) Laponite suspension was obtained by stirring at 0 °C. The addition of Laponite with high concentration improved the rheological properties, the degradation stability, and the mechanical strength of the hydrogel. The formulation of 15% (w/v) GelMA and 8% (w/v) Laponite nanocomposite hydrogel exhibited desirable printability and biocompatibility. The GelMA/Laponite hydrogels significantly promoted bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. Both desirable printability under mild conditions and cyto-compatibility enable composite hydrogel a potential candidate as biomaterial inks to be applied for bone tissue regeneration.

Rationale: Spinal cord injury (SCI) remains a critical clinical challenge. The controlled release of FGF4, a novel neuroprotective factor, from a versatile Laponite hydrogel to the injured site was a promising strategy to promote axon regeneration and motor functional recovery after SCI. Methods: Characterization of Laponite, Laponite/Heparin (Lap/Hep) and Laponite/Heparin loaded with FGF4 (Lap/Hep@FGF4) hydrogels were measured by rheometer. Multiple comprehensive evaluations were used to detect motor functional recovery and the axonal rehabilitation after Lap/Hep@FGF4 treatment in vivo (SCI rat model). Moreover, microtubule dynamic and energy transportation, which regulated axonal regeneration was evaluated by Lap/Hep@FGF4 gel in vitro (primary neuron). Results: FGF4 released from Lap/Hep gel locally achieves strong protection and regeneration after SCI. The Lap/Hep@FGF4 group revealed remarkable motor functional recovery and axonal regrowth after SCI through suppressing inflammatory reaction, increasing remyelination and reducing glial/fibrotic scars. Furthermore, the underlying mechanism of axonal rehabilitation were demonstrated via enhancing microtubule stability and regulating mitochondrial localization after Lap/Hep@FGF4 treatment. Conclusion: This promising sustained release system provides a synergistic effective approach to enhance recovery after SCI underlying a novel mechanism of axonal rehabilitation, and shows a translational prospect for the clinical treatment of SCI.

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) can replace the diaphragm and electrolyte in the traditional battery to solve safety perils such as electrolyte leakage and combustion, while their practical application is greatly hindered by their low ionic conductivity and poor ability to inhibit lithium dendrites. Herein, a laponite (LAP)/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) hybrid material modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based composite polymer electrolytes (CPE) is reported. The in-situ modification of ZIF-8 induced by electrostatic interactions between LAP layers not only improves the dispersion of LAP, but also acts as an external bridge through hydrogen bonding with PVDF to construct a stable conductive network. The extended and compatible polymer-nanofiller hybrid interface enables continuous ion migration paths and effectively reduce the crystallinity of PVDF. Moreover, the Lewis acid site and high porosity of ZIF-8 can not only promote the dissociation of lithium bis (trifluoromethanesulphonyl) imide (LiTFSI), but also limit the movement of TFSI − , further improving the ionic conductivity. Benefiting from the synergistic enhancement effect of hybrid interface, the obtained CPE demonstrated an excellent ionic conductivity of 6.77 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature and a satisfactory ion transference number of 0.60 together with superior electrochemical window of 5.3 V and good mechanical strength. The assembled Li metal battery shows a high capacity retention rate is 95 % after 150 cycles at 1C, indicating a significant inhibitory effect on lithium dendrites.

In deep and ultra-deep well drilling, ultra-high temperatures and high salt lead to poor drilling fluid performance. In this study, N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), 4-acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) and modified laponite (m-LAP) were polymerized into polymer nanocomposites PDADA-LAP by free radical polymerization in aqueous solution. The structure of PDADA-LAP was characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR and XPS. The microstructure of PDADA-LAP was characterized by TEM, SEM and EDS. The results showed that LAP improved the network structure of the polymer by hydrogen bonding and covalent bonding. The effect of temperature on the degradation of the polymer solution was investigated. The experiment showed that the degradation temperatures of the polymer was 220 °C. PDADA-LAP was used as a filtrate reducer in drilling fluids. The results showed that 3.0 wt% PDADA-LAP could improve the filtration performance of drilling fluids at high temperature of 220 °C and resist contamination with 20 wt% NaCl. The FL API and FL HTHP were 7.0 mL and 28.6 mL, respectively. PDADA-LAP is adsorbed on bentonite particles through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, which slows down the contamination of bentonite particles by NaCl and gives the drilling fluid a good effect to reduce fluid loss at high temperature and high salt.

Lost circulation during drilling has significantly hindered the safe and efficient development of oil and gas resources. Supramolecular polymer gel–based lost circulation materials have shown significant potential for application due to their unique molecular structures and superior performance. Herein, a high–performance supramolecular polymer gel was developed, and the influence of reservoir conditions on the performance of the supramolecular polymer gel was investigated in detail. The results identified an optimal formulation for the preparation of supramolecular polymer gel comprising 15 wt% acrylamide, 3 wt% 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, 2.6 wt% divinylbenzene, 5 wt% polyvinyl alcohol, 0.30 wt% cellulose nanofibers, and 3 wt% laponite. The performance of the gel-forming suspension and the resulting supramolecular polymer gel was influenced by various factors, including temperature, density, pH, and the intrusion of drilling fluid, saltwater, and crude oil. Nevertheless, the supramolecular polymer gels consistently exhibited high strength under diverse environmental conditions, as confirmed by rheological measurements. Moreover, the gels exhibited strong plugging performance across various fracture widths and in permeable formations, with maximum breakthrough pressures exceeding 6 MPa. These findings establish a theoretical foundation and practical approach for the field application of supramolecular polymer gels in complex geological formations, demonstrating their effectiveness in controlling lost circulation under challenging downhole conditions.

Asymmetrical dressings, which are composed of a compact top layer and a porous bottom layer, are commonly used to mimic the characteristics and structure of the epidermis and dermis layers, and overcome the flaws of traditional dressings such as wound dryness and bacterial penetration. Herein, a bio-inspired double-layer asymmetric wettable wound dressing was prepared by low-temperature 3D printing coupled with electrospinning technology. The hydrophobic top layer of poly(caprolactone)(PCL) film produced by electrospinning was used to simulate the compact and air-permeable epidermis. The hydrophilic bottom layer of the dressing, a scaffold composed of chitosan and copper ions doped Laponite (Cu@CS-Lap) was used to kill bacteria and speed up wound healing. Additionally, the composite dressings also showed excellent cytocompatibility and antibacterial properties in vitro experiments. The migratory area of Cu-doped group human umbilical vein endothelial cells increased by about 48.19% compared to the control group, as revealed by the results of the cell scratch experiment. Furthermore, in vivo experiments in rats showed that wound closure at the 0.5Cu@CS5-PCL dressing reached 98.24% after 12 days, indicating the enormous potential of asymmetric double dressings in boosting wound healing.

A one-step hydrothermal method was used to synthesize two-dimensional layered Laponite nanosheets (Laponite@diatomite) in situ on the three-dimensional biological template diatomite. The cationic dye removal ability of Laponite@diatomite with different diatomite content was studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transformed-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N 2 adsorption-desorption technology were used to characterize synthetic materials. The effects of pH, initial concentration, dynamics, and thermodynamics behavior on the adsorption performance were further studied. La@D-0.1 had the highest adsorption efficiency, and the adsorption rate of methylene blue (MB) solution (450 mg L −1 ) reached 76.7% in the initial 5 min. At the time of adsorption equilibrium (1 h), methylene blue adsorption rate reached 86.4%. The adsorption behavior of La@D-0.1 on MB was characterized by Langumuir isotherm and with better fitting to the quasi-second-order kinetic model curve. By calculating the adsorption process’s thermodynamic parameters, we were able to illustrate that the adsorption process was exothermic. This work provides a novel idea for the synthesis of an economical and ideal, cationic dye nano-adsorbent and provides a potential application for the purification of actual dye wastewater.

Wellbore instability caused by water invasion is the main problem in oil and gas drilling operation. This study reports the utilization of a hydrophobic-associated polymer-based laponite nanolayered silicate composite as a filtrate reducer in water-based drilling fluids (WDFs). The thermal performance and micromorphology of the composite were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscope, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the composite possessed a “bean pod” structure and a good thermal stability. The rheological properties of the composite solution were evaluated. The results showed that the hydrophobic association interaction of the composite is weak but existent, and the crosslink network structure is variable. The applied performances of WDFs containing the composite were also evaluated. Evaluation results showed that the composite could improve the properties of the thermal stability, salt tolerance, and fluid loss control of WDFs. The particle size distribution of WDFs and the micrographs of filter cakes explained the improving. The composite was expected to be applied as an efficient filtrate reducer for developing high performance drilling fluids. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2020 , 137 , 48608.
