Surface Engineering via Rare Earth Oxide Composite Coating to Enhance the High-Voltage Stability of the LiCoO2 Cathode

Yuwei Zhao,Wei Zeng,Shengqi Su,Jingzhe Wu,Jiangnan Ke,Yonggang Sun,Xijie Lin

The commercial application of high-voltage LiCoO2 (LCO) faces significant challenges due to rapid capacity decay, primarily attributed to an unstable interface and structure at deeply delithiated states. Herein, a unique rare earth oxide composite coating comprising La2O3, Y2O3, and LaYO3 has been prepared to stabilize LCO at high voltage. The synergistic effect between these rare earth oxides significantly reinforces the protective capabilities of the coating, effectively enhancing the interfacial/structural stability of LCO. When tested at 4.6 V, the coated LCO exhibits an excellent capacity retention of 94.4% after 300 cycles at 1 C. Even after an ultralong charge/discharge test of 700 cycles at 2 C, the coated LCO retains 85.2% of its initial specific capacity, which significantly outperforms the uncoated LCO (6.3%). Moreover, the coated LCO shows enhanced cycling performance at a high temperature of 45 °C, owing to the outstanding thermal stability of the La–Y–O composite. Additionally, the superior cycling stability of the coated LCO at 4.7 V, compared to the uncoated LCO, demonstrated the promising potential of the La–Y–O composite coating in improving electrochemical performance of LCO at higher cutoff voltages. These findings highlight an efficacious strategy to enhance the interfacial/structural stability of high-voltage LCO using rare earth oxides.

One‐dimensional NiS‐CNT@Li7P3S11 nanocomposites as ionic/electronic additives for LiCoO2 based all‐solid‐state lithium batteries

Miao Jiang,Wentong Fan,Gaozhan Liu,Wei Weng,Liangting Cai,Xiayin Yao

Increasing active material content is critical to realize high energy density for all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs), which is generally impeded by limited ionic/electronic conductions in cathode layer. Herein, one-dimensional NiS-CNT@Li 7 P 3 S 11 nanocomposites are synthesized by wet chemistry method and possess high mixed ionic/electronic conductivities. When employed as additives for LiCoO 2 , the NiS-CNT@Li 7 P 3 S 11 nanocomposites can efficiently improve the electrochemical performances of LiCoO 2 cathode in the ASSLBs. Specifically, the resultant Li/75%Li 2 S-24%P 2 S 5 -1%P 2 O 5 /Li 10 GeP 2 S 12 /LiCoO 2 -5%NiS-CNT@Li 7 P 3 S 11 ASSLBs with 70 wt% LiCoO 2 content deliver a reversible capacity of 114.3 mAh g −1 after 50 cycles under 0.1 C and 99.6 mAh g −1 at 0.5 C after 100 cycles at room temperature . Even if the active material LiCoO 2 content increases to 80%, a high reversible discharge capacity of 124 mAh g −1 can be achieved at 0.05 C after 25 cycles. Obviously, the excellent electrochemical performances are attributed to the improved ionic/electronic conductivities with assistance of NiS-CNT@Li 7 P 3 S 11 . This work provides an efficient strategy to design cathode materials with high ionic/electronic conductivities and paves the way for the practical application of ASSLBs.

Electrochemical performance of spherical LiCoO2 with high stability in neutral aqueous electrolyte

Jun Ping,Sajid Rauf,Zuhra Tayyab,Changping Yang

Layer-structured lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) is one of promising electrode materials for secondary aqueous lithium-ion batteries, yet the effect of structural proton insertion in LCO in neutral aqueous electrolytes cannot be ignored. Present study investigates the electrochemical performance of polycrystalline spherical LCO in neutral aqueous saturated Li 2 SO 4 solution. Herein, we for the first time demonstrate the dependence of LCO stability on the discharge cutoff potential. The applied LCO electrodes show good cycling stability within the potential window of 0.65–1.1 V vs. SCE, while electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) analysis detects no sign of proton intercalation. Moreover, the spherical LCO free from the proton intercalation exhibits a superior rate capability with 78% discharge capacity retention at 80 C. The lithium-ion chemical diffusion coefficient being seven times than that of irregular shaped LCO sample can be responsible for such significant rate capability. The cyclability testing depicts the better performance of spherical LCO in comparison with the counterpart, especially in terms of electrode activation time. Post cycling electrode characterization displays that the discharge capacity fading of LCO mainly results from the crystal grain deformation due to high potential cycling and can be alleviated by reducing the depth of charge.

Surface Design with Cation and Anion Dual Gradient Stabilizes High-Voltage LiCoO2

Weiyuan Huang,Qi Zhao,Mingjian Zhang,Shenyang Xu,Haoyu Xue,Chen Zhu,Jianjun Fang,Wenguang Zhao,Guoxi Ren,Runzhi Qin,Qinghe Zhao,Haibiao Chen,Feng Pan

LiCoO 2 (LCO) is the most successful cathode material for commercial lithium-ion batteries. Cycling LCO to high potentials up to 4.5 V or even 4.6 V can significantly elevate the capacity but cause structural degradation due to the serious surface side reaction between the highly oxidized Co 4+ and O − species with organic electrolytes. To tackle this concern, a new strategy, constructing cation and anion dual gradients at the surface of LCO (DG-LCO), is proposed. Specifically, the electrochemically inactive cation and anion are selected to substitute Co 3+ and O 2− at the surface in a gradated manner, thus minimizing the highly oxidized Co 4+ and O − species at high potentials and suppressing the induced surface side reactions. Unexpectedly, this dual gradient design leads to a spinel-like surface structure coherently with bulk layered structure, which facilitates Li + diffusion kinetics. Thus, DG-LCO achieves high capacity and excellent cycling stability at 4.6 V (≈216 mA h g −1 at 0.1 C, a capacity retention of 88.6% after 100 cycles in 1.8 A h pouch full cell at 1 C), as well as improved rate capability (≈140 mA h g −1 at 5 C). These studies provide useful guidelines for future design of cathode materials with long lifespan and high rate capability.

Recovery Li/Co from spent LiCoO2 electrode based on an aqueous dual-ion lithium-air battery

Yu Zhou,Wei Shan,Shaofeng Wang,Kwok-ho Lam,Qiang Ru,Fuming Chen,Xianhua Hou

While lithium-ion batteries dominate the field of electronic devices and vehicles, recovery of LiCoO 2 from spent batteries becomes a significant process. Aqueous lithium-air battery and dual-ion battery were blended into a novel electrochemical system as dual-ion lithium-air battery (DLAB) system to recover Li and Co elements from the spent LiCoO 2 (acid solution). In the system, oxygen, LiCoO 2 acid solution and Li 2 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (LTPO), which has Na + superionic conductor structure and is synthesized by sol-gel method, were used as cathode, dual-ion electrolyte and anode. Relatively low voltage plateaus, stability and insolubility of LTPO make it to be a feasible candidate for this aqueous DLAB. By applying Pt/C as a catalyst for cathode, the full discharged system exhibits a Co ion recovering rate of up to 96.2%. Moreover, this system presents positive discharge plateaus at around 0.47 V and 0.10 V during recovering, demonstrating an output energy density of 43.88 Wh kg −1 . The system shows a green and promising way for the recovery of spent LiCoO 2 battery.

Efficient degradation of industrial pollutants with sulfur (IV) mediated by LiCoO2 cathode powders of spent lithium ion batteries: A “treating waste with waste” strategy

Yaoguang Guo,Yan-Ling Zhao,Xiaoyi Lou,Tianyi Zhou,Zhaohui Wang,Changling Fang,Jie Guan,Shuai Chen,Xin Xu,Rui-Qin Zhang

Strategies to maximize the reuse of electronic and industrial wastes have scientific, economic, social and environmental implications. We herein propose a strategy of “treating waste with waste” using LiCoO 2 cathode powders from spent lithium ion batteries to eliminate industrial pollutants led by sulfur (S) (IV) in waste water. By radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, we identified singlet 1 O 2 as the dominant species while SO 4 − and OH as the secondary species for decontamination during the oxidization process mediated by LiCoO 2 powders. The intrinsic mechanism of S(IV) conversion was revealed to be two-step hydrogen migrations from HSO 3 − to O 2 occurring on LiCoO 2 surface by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The surface of LiCoO 2 powders plays a key role in anchoring sulfur species and forming surface complex as an excellent medium, which is found to be stable and reusable by material characterizations and the recycling experiment. Free Co(II) ions in solvents have no catalysis effect on the conversion of pollutants. Our work offers a particularly vivid example for rational reuse of electronic wastes to eliminate industrial pollutants, and may raise economic benefits in environmental practice due to two aims achieved in once action.

Highly reactive bulk lattice oxygen exposed by simple water treatment of LiCoO2 for catalytic oxidation of airborne benzene

Yang Liu,Wei Gao,Hao Zhou,Xianliang Yi,Yongming Bao

Aiming at a simple and effective way to activate the recycled cathode materials from spent Li-ion batteries for air cleaning, LiCoO 2 was synthesized and treated by water for airborne benzene removal. Compared with the pristine sample, whose benzene conversion was ∼20 % at 400 °C, the water-treated one could fulfill 100 % of conversion for 431 ppm of benzene at 300 °C under 120 L g −1  h −1 of space velocity. Furthermore, the water treatment process also worked effectively with the commercialized LiCoO 2 . Characterization results showed that surface oxygen, i.e. , chemically adsorbed oxygen and surficial lattice oxygen, only acted as benzene adsorption sites inert towards benzene oxidation whereas bulk lattice oxygen was reactive for oxidation reaction. Water treatment played two roles in updating the LiCoO 2 surface properties. One was to remove the excessive Li 2 CO 3 and the thus-generated sites could adsorb gaseous oxygen, which was catalyzed to directly oxidize the gas-phase benzene into surface by-products at low temperatures (150−200 °C) following the Elay-Rideal pathway. Another more important role was to expose the bulk lattice oxygen by eliminating the surface oxygen species. The thus-exposed bulk lattice oxygen worked at high temperatures (250−400 °C) and could effectively oxidize the adsorbed benzene following the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism.

Synergistic effect of sulfolane-based composite polymer electrolyte and vinylidene carbonate/lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate interface modification on LiCoO2 cathode

Qiujun Wang,Nana Bai,Yelun Xin,Xiaomeng Fan,Di Zhang,Zhaojin Li,Qujiang Sun,Huilan Sun,Bo Wang,Guoxu Wang,Li-Zhen Fan

LiCoO 2 (LCO) is a prominent high-voltage cathode material due to its exceptional energy density and impressive theoretical specific capacity of 274 mAh g −1 . However, challenges such as irreversible structural phase transitions, loss of reactive oxygen, and cobalt dissolution can lead to unstable interfaces between the electrolyte and the LCO cathode. In this study, sulfolane (SUL)-based composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) were synthesized through in-situ polymerization, and the LCO cathode was modified using vinylidene carbonate (VC) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB). The synergistic effects of SUL and VC/LiDFOB facilitated the formation of a more stable cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) layer. Consequently, the Li/EFHTL-15 %SUL/LCO-VC-LiDFOB cell demonstrated excellent reversible cycling performance, achieving 86.36 % capacity retention after 300 cycles at 0.5C within a voltage range of 2.8–4.4 V at 25 ℃. This work provides a viable approach for enhancing the interface stability of the LCO cathode in CPEs.

Achievable Surface–Bulk Structure Dual Reinforced by Room-Temperature Al-Induced Engineering Enables Stable Battery Cycling of 4.6 V LiCoO2

Zhengde Wang,Zhengfeng Zhang,Xingkai Zhang,Rupeng Li,Yunxia Wang,Jin Li,Bin Zhang

The LiCoO2 cathode cannot maintain stable battery cycling under high voltage, as the undesired release of lattice O and harmful surface side reactions compromise its structural stability, resulting in battery capacity degradation. Herein, inspired by architectural engineering, we proposed a surface–bulk structure dual-reinforced strategy to tackle the aforementioned challenges by room-temperature Al-induced engineering, which could achieve surface disordering and phosphating and bulk gradient Ni doping of the LiCoO2 cathode. Such a multifunctional structure could delay the detrimental transition, restrain lattice O loss, reduce harmful surface side reactions, and form a phosphate-rich CEI with high ionic conductivity and stability. The as-prepared modified LiCoO2 as the cathode in lithium-ion batteries displayed remarkably enhanced cycle stability than bare LiCoO2 (91.9% vs 45.3% after 100 cycles in 3.0–4.6 V at a current density of 1 C). Even at a 5 C high rate, the modified LiCoO2 cathode also displayed superb battery cycling (92% after 100 cycles at 3.0–4.6 V). This room-temperature Al-induced engineering is universal to other layered cathode materials.

A facile strategy to improve the cycle stability of 4.45 V LiCoO2 cathode in gel electrolyte system via succinonitrile additive under elevated temperature

Ning Xu,Hebing Zhou,Youhao Liao,Guanjie Li,Mengqing Xu,Weishan Li

The rapid capacity fading of LiCoO 2 cathodes under high temperature limits its further development in high energy density of lithium ion batteries , caused by the unmatched liquid electrolyte that tends to decompose when the working potential exceeds 4.2 V (vs. Li + /Li). Gel polymer membrane blended with PEO (poly(ethylene oxide)) and P(VdF-HFP) (poly(vinylidene fluoride- co -hexafluoropropylene)) is used to enhance the oxidative stability of liquid electrolyte in the polymer matrix . In order to maximize the capacity of LiCoO 2 cathode, proper amount of SN (succinonitrile) that helps to construct a stable CEI (cathode electrolyte interface) film is added into the electrolyte. The SN-contained GPE (gel polymer electrolyte) has the highest oxidative decomposition potential of 5.2 V and the lowest interfacial resistance . At 55 °C, the LiCoO 2 /GPE/Li coin-cell keeps 82% of capacity after 350 cycles in 3.0 V ~ 4.45 V at 1 C rate, compared with that of 9% capacity retention using the polyethylene separator saturated with liquid electrolyte. The enhancement in the cyclic stability under elevated temperature attributes to the dual strategies: the GPE guarantees the better oxidative stability by suppressing the further oxidative decomposition of liquid electrolyte, while the high quality CEI film formed by the SN additive protects the structural integrity of LiCoO 2 cathode.

Ionic-conductive poly (vinylidene fluoride) polymer as a versatile binder to stabilize high-voltage LiCoO2 cathode materials

Wang Yikui,Tao Jianming,Wang Jiangjie,Chen Shaoyang,Yang Yanmin,Lin Yingbin

Serious structural irreversibility and interfacial side reactions pose major challenges for the stable operation of LiCoO 2 cathodes at high voltages. Herein, we report a polymer-based solid electrolyte (SLP) composed succinonitrile, LiTFSI and PVDF as a binder to address these issues. The SLP binder exhibits superior performance compared to traditional PVDF and PVDF binders with LiTFSI, with higher ionic conductivity (8.46 × 10 − 5 S cm − 1 at 30 ℃), lower activation energy of 0.38 eV and excellent adhesion. Even with just 3% SLP binder, LiCoO 2 cathode operating at a cutoff voltage of 4.6 V and loaded with ~ 6.0 mg cm − 2 active material demonstrates improved rate capability at higher compaction densities, delivering a discharge specific capacity of 146.5 mAh g − 1 after 100 cycles at 0.5 C-rate. The SLP binder not only enhances Li + conduction but also facilitates the formation of a stable cathode-electrolyte interphase, thus reducing the Li + diffusion barrier and interface polarization, and enhancing battery’s performance at low temperature. Furthermore, the SPL binder’s high compatibility and elasticity with the electrolyte mitigate irreversible structural changes and volume expansion in LiCoO 2 during cycling, leading to better preservation of the layered structure and lower internal stress for stable cycling under high temperatures. This strategy provides a novel interface protection idea for electroceramic cathode materials and may facilitate commercial development.

A Strategy to Make High Voltage LiCoO2 Compatible with Polyethylene Oxide Electrolyte in All-Solid-State Lithium Ion Batteries

Jun Ma,Zhaolin Liu,Bingbing Chen,Longlong Wang,Liping Yue,Haisheng Liu,Jianjun Zhang,Zhihong Liu,Guanglei Cui

Interface stability between cathode and electrolyte is closely related to the interface resistance and electrochemical performance of all-solid-state lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, the significant interface issues between cathode and all-solid-state polymer electrolyte have been researched rarely. Here, we demonstrate that severe interface decomposition reactions occur continually and deteriorate the cycling life of high voltage LiCoO2/cellulose-supported poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB)/Li battery between 2.5 and 4.45 V vs. Li/Li+. To improve the interface stability between LiCoO2 and PEO-LiDFOB electrolyte, we modify the LiCoO2 surface by a thin layer of high ionic conducting and electrochemical oxidation resistant poly(ethyl cyanoacrylate) (PECA) through in-situ polymerization method. The PECA coating layer significantly suppresses the continuous decomposition of lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) salt in PEO electrolyte. As a result, the PECA-coated LiCoO2/PEO-LiDFOB/Li battery shows decreased interface resistance and enhanced cycling stability. This work will enlighten the understanding of interface stability and enrich the modification strategy between cathode and polymer electrolyte as well as boost the further development of all-solid-state LIBs.
