The three-dimensional porous LiFePO 4 modified with uniformly dispersed nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes has been successfully prepared by a freeze-drying method. The morphology and structure of the porous composites are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the electrochemical performances are evaluated using the constant current charge/discharge tests, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes are uniformly dispersed inside the porous LiFePO 4 to construct a superior three-dimensional conductive network, which remarkably increases the electronic conductivity and accelerates the diffusion of lithium ion. The porous composite displays high specific capacity, good rate capability and excellent cycling stability, rendering it a promising positive electrode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Carboxymethyl chitosan (C-CTS) was firstly reported as a water soluble binder for LiFePO 4 cathode in Li-ion batteries. The electrochemical performances of LiFePO 4 cathode with C-CTS binder was investigated and compared with the conventional water-soluble sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and the commercial non-aqueous polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). LiFePO 4 cathode with C-CTS exhibited a comparable cycling performance, but better rate capability than that of CMC and PVDF, retaining 65% capacity of C/5 at 5 C rate as compared with 55.9% and 39.4% for CMC and PVDF, respectively. In addition, LiFePO 4 cathode with C-CTS exhibited excellent cycling performance at 60 °C, retaining 91.8%/62.1% capacity after 80 cycles at 1 C/10 C, respectively.

Mortar-like LiFePO 4 /C composites are synthesized by a ball milling-spray drying-carbothermal reduction method using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the organic carbon source, dispersant , and reductive agent, while the carbon aerogel as the excellent conductive network. PEG enables the carbon aerogel to uniformly coat the primary particles, which restricts the overgrowth of primary particles' during the synthesis process. While the carbon aerogel provides a three-dimensional conductive network, and its porous structure can absorb more electrolyte. Moreover, the mortar-like secondary particles could further increase the specific surface of LiFePO 4 /C composites. The high speed of electron transfer and lithium-ion transportation can be achieved simultaneously for the Mortar-like LiFePO 4 /C composites. All these factors contribute to the outstanding rate performance (163.4 mAh g -1 at 0.2 C and 115.4 mAh g -1 at 15 C) and considerable cycling stability (99.3% of capacity retention after 300 cycles at 5 C/5 C). The Mortar-like LiFePO4/C composites combined with the evenly coated carbon aerogel are promising cathode materials for rechargeable lithium-ion power batteries.

Lithium is widely used in digital products and new energy vehicles due to its low density and low redox potential, and there are huge prospects for extracting lithium from the brines of salt lakes. In addition, it is well known that the majority of the lithium salt lake brines on Earth have been identified in high-altitude areas with harsh geographical environments. Nevertheless, there are also rich natural energy sources, such as wind and tidal energy. Therefore, it is vital to develop a novel variety of lithium-ion sieves that can utilize natural energy. It is highly exclusive and selective for lithium-ions in salt lakes to achieve low-cost and large-scale lithium extraction under natural conditions. In this paper, BaTiO 3 -LiFePO 4 (BTO-LFP) piezoelectric composite-based lithium-ion sieve materials were successfully prepared and utilized to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy, which should be used in lithium extraction from raw brines with natural energy. According to the experiments, the materials can reach adsorbing equilibrium in simulated brine after 48 h. The lithium adsorption amount is 21.5 mg/g and can also reach adsorbing equilibrium in Yi-Liping raw salt lake brines after 72 h, and the adsorption amount can also reach 21.7 mg/g which indicates that this lithium-ion sieve is specific and selective for lithium-ion. What's more surprising is that this lithium-ion sieve only uses natural kinetic energy as the driving force for lithium extraction. Therefore, this study has devised an innovative technique for extracting lithium from natural brines, which shows significant promise, for the large-scale exploration of lithium resources from salt lakes under harsh natural conditions.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high power, high capacity, and support for fast charging are increasingly favored by consumers. As a commercial electrode material for power batteries, LiFePO4was limited from further wide application due to its low conductivity and lithium-ion diffusion rate. The development of advanced architectures integrating rational conductive networks with optimized ion transport pathways represents a critical frontier in optimizing the performance of cathode materials. In this paper, a novel self-supporting cathode material (designated as LFP@LVP-CES) was synthesized through an integrated coaxial electrospinning and controlled pyrolysis strategy. This methodology directly converts LiFePO4, Li3V2(PO4)3, and polyacrylonitrile (PAN)) into flexible, binder-free cathodes with a hierarchical structural organization. The 3D carbon nanofiber (CNF) matrix synergistically integrates LiFePO4(Li/Fe/POx) and Li3V2(PO4)3(Li/V/POx) nanoparticles, where CNFs act as a conductive scaffold to enhance electron transport, while the POxpolyanionic frameworks stabilize Li+diffusion pathways. Morphological characterizations (SEM and TEM) revealed a 3D cross-connected carbon nanofiber matrix (diameter: 250 ± 50 nm) uniformly embedded with active material particles. Electrochemical evaluations demonstrated that the LFP@LVP-CES cathode delivers an initial specific capacity of 165 mAh·g−1at 0.1 C, maintaining 80 mAh·g−1at 5 C. Notably, the material exhibited exceptional rate capability and cycling stability, demonstrating a 96% capacity recovery after high-rate cycling upon returning to 0.1 C, along with 97% capacity retention over 200 cycles at 1 C. Detailed kinetic analysis through EIS revealed significantly reduced Rctand increased Li+diffusion. This superior electrochemical performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects between the 3D conductive network architecture and dual active materials. Compared with traditional coating processes and high-temperature calcination, the preparation of controllable electrospinning and low-temperature pyrolysis to some extent avoid the introduction of harmful substances and reduce raw material consumption and carbon emissions. This original integration strategy establishes a paradigm for designing freestanding electrode architectures through 3D structural design combined with a bimodal active material, providing critical insights for next-generation energy storage systems.

The use of Fe 3+ salts for leaching spent LiFePO 4 (LFP) batteries is gaining attention due to its mild, eco-friendly conditions. However, efficient Fe/Li separation remains challenging, as precipitation causes Li loss or impurity introduction, and conventional solvent extraction offers low Li efficiency (∼80 %) and complex processes. This study employed data mining and theoretical analysis to rapidly identify a synergistic P204/N235 extraction system. A closed-loop process coupling H 3 PO 4 stripping and FePO 4 precipitation was developed, achieving 99.45 % Fe removal and only 1.25 % Li loss in a single extraction stage. The Fe/Li separation factor reached 14,243. During stripping, Fe recovery reached 95 % in one stage. The aqueous phase over 10 stripping cycles was reused for FePO 4 preparation, and the raffinate was retained for Li recovery. This integrated approach enables efficient Fe/Li separation and high-value resource utilization from LFP leachates.

The green and efficient recovery of Li + from spent LiFePO 4 (S-LFP) batteries and subsequent preparation of high-purity lithium products hold significant industrial importance. It can be applied in various fields such as electronic products, energy storage, and healthcare. A green and non-toxic potassium monopersulfate triple salt (PMTS) was used for the first time as a dual-functional reagent serving as both leaching reagent and oxidant, enabling highly in-situ selective leaching of Li + from S-LFP. Furthermore, a novel extraction system employing dibenzoylmethane (DBM) and triisobutyl phosphate (TIBP) was innovatively applied to selectively recover Li + from the leachate, ultimately yielding battery-grade lithium carbonate. Under optimized conditions, the leaching efficiency of Li + reached up to 99.40 % with nearly negligible iron dissolution (0.01 %). The DBM-TIBP system achieved selective extraction of Li + from the leachate with a single-stage extraction efficiency exceeding 94 %. A comprehensive purification process involving washing with NH 4 Cl/LiCl solution, three-stage cross-flow stripping with NH 4 HCO 3 solution, and high-temperature crystallization was implemented. This protocol achieved remarkable impurity removal efficiencies of 99.05 % for K + and 98.10 % for Na + while maintaining complete Li + retention. The stripping efficiency of Li + reached up to 99.36 %, leading to producing battery-grade lithium carbonate with 99.9 % purity. Additionally, potassium sulfate with 98.30 % purity was recovered from the residual leachate via fractional crystallization. This cost-effective and environmentally benign strategy provided a new perspective for industrial-scale green recycling of S-LFP battery cathode materials.

Recently, para -aramid nanofiber separators have attracted more attention in lithium metal batteries (LMBs); however, the balance between safety and electrochemical performance remains challenging. Herein, a robust, porous, and thermotolerant separator (ZPBIA) is proposed based on electrospun heterocycle aramid nanofibers and in-situ grown metal-organic framework (MOF). First, introducing H 2 SO 4 enables improved electrospinnability of rigid-chain poly(p-phenylene -benzimidazole-terephthalate) (PBIA) due to hierarchical hydrogen bonds crosslinking network formation. Next, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) nanosheets anchored in situ on PBIA nanofibers confer high porosity (91%) and good electrolyte wettability to the ZPBIA separator. As a result, the assembled LFP/ZPBIA/Li cell with a high LiFePO 4 (LFP) loading (12 mg cm −2 ) delivers excellent rate capacity at 5.0 C (76 mAh g −1 ) and impressive long-term cycling stability at 1.0 C (a minor capacity decay of 0.031% per cycle after 500 cycles). Benefiting from the intrinsic properties of PBIA, the ZPBIA separator possesses high mechanical strength to prevent Li dendrites puncture. Moreover, the open circuit voltage stabilizes at ∼3.4 V from 30 to 150 ℃ for LFP/ZPBIA/Li cell, which is probably applied in high-temperature conditions. This work provides a novel fabrication of functional separators to balance the safety and electrochemical property of LMBs.

Biomass-derived carboxymethyl cellulose lithium (CMC Li) was synthesized from poplar wood (PW) and corn stover (CS) as sustainable binders for lithium-ion batteries. The raw materials were pretreated with green deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to remove lignin and hemicellulose, followed by bleaching to purify the cellulose. The purified cellulose was subsequently subjected to alkaline swelling, alkalization, and etherification to produce CMC-Li binders. Results revealed that CMC-Li binders derived from neutral choline chloride (ChCl)/ethylene glycol (EG) (1:4) pretreatment (CMC-Li-PW(EG) and CMC-Li-CS(EG)) exhibited higher molecular weight and a more uniform molecular weight distribution, leading to improved force distribution between the binder and conductive agents. The cathodes of LiFePO 4 (LFP) batteries fabricated with these binders displayed smoother surfaces, uniform particle distribution, and minimal agglomeration or voids, resulting in enhanced Young's modulus and adhesion strength compared to traditional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binders. Moreover, LFP batteries utilizing CMC-Li binders demonstrated low charge impedance, superior cyclic voltammetry performance, high initial charge-discharge capacities (175/174 mAh/g for CMC-Li-PW(EG) and 173/172 mAh/g for CMC-Li-CS(EG)), high initial Coulombic efficiency (>98 %), low capacity loss (4.2 % after 200 cycles), and excellent rate capability. These findings highlight the potential of biomass-derived CMC-Li binders as high-performance, eco-friendly alternatives for next-generation LIBs.

The low electronic conductivity and poor Li + diffusion coefficient of conventional LiFePO 4 (LFP) materials severely impede its high-rate applications for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). To break these limits, one novel poly(1,3-diethynylbenzene) (PAB) acetylenic carbon-rich polymer with extremely high-carbon content (96.75 wt%) and good solubility has been prepared by an oxidative coupling reaction. One definite advantage is that this carbon-rich PAB polymer will release, upon pyrolysis , very low amounts of gas, forming therefore uniform and dense highly conductive carbon network. Besides, the specific resistivity of continuous PAB-C layer can be as low as ∼0.01 Ω cm, which can effectively improve electrical conductivity and maintain mechanical integrity of LFP cathode. As a result, the prepared LFP@PAB-C nanocomposites with approximately 3.8 wt% carbon content and 2.5 nm carbon layer exhibit an excellent high-rate capability, e.g. even at a considerable discharge rate of 50 C, while the capacity can still be remained at 129.6 mA h g −1 . Moreover, the LFP@PAB-C nanocomposites also reveal a remarkable cycling stability with as high as 100.6% capacity retention at 20 C over 1000 cycles. This kind of LFP@PAB-C composite was demonstrated to be an ideal cathode material for high-power LIBs.

Conventional metallurgical technologies for recycling cathode materials from retired Li-ion batteries go against carbon neutrality owing to massive material input and energy consumption. Although featuring with simplified process, direct regeneration technology still fails to bypass high-temperature driving forces for Li + compensation of degraded cathodes. Herein, chemical re-lithiation strategy mediated by ferrocene is proposed to directly regenerate the Li-deficient spent cathodes. Ferrocene and its derivatives, the so-called p-type redox mediators, can be oxidized spontaneously from neutral molecules to stable cations under ambient conditions, allowing them to function as electron donors . Meanwhile, lithium salts serve as Li + donors to ensure charge neutrality of the cathode lattice. The effects of solvation and substituent are thoroughly investigated to precisely regulate the potential of a series of ferrocene-based reductants. Chemical re-lithiation is driven thermodynamically by the intrinsic potential gap between ferrocene and degraded cathodes, thus fundamentally realizing a rapid lithiation reaction (taking less than 20 min at 25 °C), while avoiding the involvement of high-temperature operation. Diverse characterizations have been performed to explore the Li + -electron concerted re-lithiation mechanism. The regenerated LiFePO 4 cathode demonstrated comparable Li + storage capability to commercial cathode. Life-cycle analysis verifies the economical and environmental superiority of our chemical re-lithiation strategy to metallurgy in practical industry. The thermodynamically spontaneous chemical re-lithiation provides competitive options for greener recycling of retired batteries in the future.

Polysaccharides can be potential binders for lithium-ion batteries due to their strong adhesion through numerous hydroxyl groups . As a novel waterborne lithiated polysaccharide derivative, cellulose sulfate lithium (CSL) is successfully synthesized and used as the binder for LiFePO 4 (LFP) cathode. The chemical structure of CSL is verified by FTIR-ATR, XRD, C 13 -NMR, GPC , EA , ICP and TGA . Compared to LFP cathode using polyvinylidene difluoride binder, electrochemical measurements show that the LFP cathode using CSL (LFP-CSL) has lower polarization and better rate performance owing to higher lithium-ion conductivity of CSL. The result of morphological analysis indicates that CSL binder can maintain an integrated LFP cathode structure during hundreds of cycles. As a result, the LFP-CSL cathode exhibits a discharge capacity of 133.4 mAh g −1 and maintains remarkable cycle stability with retention of 93.1 % after 300 cycles at 1C. These findings provide novel insights into the rational design of the binders for the LFP cathode.
