Reducing energy requirements and enhancing MEA-CO2 desorption rates in amine solutions with KIT-6 nanostructures

Zain Bairq,Ya Pang,Jia Li,Abdo Hezam,Paitoon Tontiwachwuthikul,Han Chen

The primary challenge hindering the widespread industrial adoption of amine-based CO 2 capture technology is the sluggish desorption rate of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and the substantial energy required in the regeneration phase. Despite considerable advancements aimed at reducing energy demands through novel amine solvents and process optimization, there remains a critical need for innovative solutions. This study introduces mesoporous silica nanoparticles KIT-6, along with super solid acid catalysts SO 4 2− /SnO 2 and SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 , to assess their impact on enhancing the desorption rate and reducing the energy consumption in the CO 2 capture process from rich monoethanolamine (MEA) at 96 °C. Our findings indicate that all the tested catalysts significantly expedite the regeneration process, reducing the energy required for regeneration up to 33.50 % and boosting the desorption rate by 150.25 % beyond what is achieved with MEA alone. KIT-6, in particular, displayed superior catalytic activity and energy efficiency in the desorption process. The catalysts SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 , SO 4 2− /SnO 2 , and KIT-6 improved the desorption rate by 20 %, 37.5 %, and 150.25 %, respectively, and cut down the energy required for regeneration by 11.10 %, 24.44 %, and 33.50 % respectively when compared to conventional aqueous MEA under the same conditions. Moreover, KIT-6 was subjected to ten cycles of CO 2 desorption testing to verify the cyclic robustness. A potential mechanism explaining the enhanced CO 2 capture facilitated by KIT-6 is also proposed within this work.

Efficient recovery of waste hair keratin via L-Cys/MEA for selective separation of Fe3+/Li+

Zhuo Tan,Baoling Chu,Chenguang Wang,Jing Tian,Yi Nie,Hongshuai Gao

Efficient recovery and high-value utilization of keratin from waste human hair are of significant interest for sustainable materials development. However, the densely cross-linked disulfide bonds and extensive hydrogen-bond network of keratin make its mild and efficient extraction challenging. In this work, a redox-active deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of L-cysteine (L-Cys) and monoethanolamine (MEA) was developed for keratin recovery from waste human hair. Under optimized conditions of 80 °C, 3.5 h, and 10 wt% solid loading, the keratin recovery yield reached 96.5%, and the solvent maintained stable performance over five recycling cycles. Experimental results, together with DFT and MD simulations, indicate that the dissolution process is driven by synergistic disulfide bond cleavage and disruption of the hydrogen-bond network, while the protein backbone remains largely intact. The recovered keratin was further phosphorylated and co-regenerated with cellulose to fabricate a phosphorylated keratin/cellulose composite membrane (P-KCM). The membrane exhibited efficient and selective Fe 3+ adsorption, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 297.8 mg·g −1 . FT-IR and XPS analyses reveal that phosphate groups serve as the primary coordination sites for Fe 3+ . In tests with real LiFePO₄ leachate, P-KCM removed 97.3% of Fe 3+ while leaving 80.1% of Li + in solution, and it retained 84.7% of its initial adsorption capacity after four adsorption-desorption cycles. This work provides a mild, efficient, and recyclable strategy for keratin valorization and offers a feasible approach for selective metal ion separation and pre-treatment in battery recycling.

Equivalent Salt Concentration: A Quantitative Criterion for Predicting and Mitigating Salt Precipitation in MEA CO2 Electrolysis

Lei Yuan,Gang Zhu,Chenbao Lu,Qiqi Wan,Wenxing Jiang,Xiaodong Zhuang,Junliang Zhang,Changchun Ke

Membrane electrode assembly (MEA)-based CO2 electrolyzers are promising for industrial applications due to high energy efficiency and scalability, yet their long-term stability is severely limited by cathode salt precipitation. This work innovatively uncovers the salt precipitation mechanism from the perspective of water dynamics. This study clarifies that water plays dual key roles in regulating salt precipitation: first, as the essential carrier for cation removal, and second, as a dynamic modulator of transmembrane water and cation fluxes. Based on this insight, the concept of equivalent salt concentration (Ceq) is proposed, defined as the ratio of transmembrane potassium ion flux to liquid water flux. By comparing Ceq with the saturation solubility of KHCO3 (2.24 mol/L at 20 °C), a quantitative model is established to accurately predict the risk of salt precipitation under different anolyte concentrations, which is validated by long-term stability experiments. Systematic investigations show that membranes with high water permeability and low electro-osmotic drag (EOD) coefficients (e.g., X37–50 RT membrane reducing Ceq by 62.8% vs A40), enhanced gas diffusion layer (GDL) hydrophobicity, and optimized CO2 flow rates effectively mitigate salt precipitation. This work not only establishes a rapid prediction method for salt precipitation risk but also provides targeted strategies for the design of salt precipitation-resistant anion exchange membranes and GDLs in MEA CO2 electrolyzers, which is of great significance for advancing the industrial application of this technology.

Optimization investigation on the novel MEA-MDEA-n-butanol-H2O phase change absorbent for CO2 capture

Yuqi Zhang,Yaxuan Zhen,Chunying Zhu,Taotao Fu,Youguang Ma

Chemical absorption has become the most mature and widely used CO 2 capture technology to address CO 2 emissions. Phase change absorbents based on mixed amines combine the advantages of individual amines and reduce regeneration energy consumption. A novel phase change absorbent system based on mixed amine was developed in this study and its CO 2 capture and desorption performance was investigated. The system comprises monoethanolamine (MEA), N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), n-butanol and water. Gas-liquid absorption experiments in the microchannel revealed that the flow patterns of the rich phase changed successively through homogeneous flow, irregular droplet flow, tubular-droplet flow and liquid slug flow as the gas-liquid ratio was increased. This transition was influenced by internal circulation, phase change and viscosity, causing the absorption rate to rise initially, then increase slowly before eventually declining. The desorption performance of the saturated rich phase in the MEA-MDEA-n-butanol-H 2 O system was significantly superior to that of the 30 wt% MEA aqueous solution. Comprehensively, the optimal mass ratio of MEA-MDEA-n-butanol-H 2 O was identified as 1.2:1.8:4:3, achieving a higher desorption rate and lower energy consumption. Desorption efficiency and cyclic capacity were 1.8 times those of the 30 wt% MEA aqueous solution, indicating promising application potential.

Enhancing CO2 desorption performance in rich MEA solution by addition of SO42−/ZrO2/SiO2 bifunctional catalyst

Zain Ali Saleh Bairq,Hongxia Gao,Yufei Huang,Haiyan Zhang,Zhiwu Liang

A significant impediment to the widespread adoption of amine-based post-combustion technique for CO 2 capture from flue gas is the huge energy demand for amine solvent regeneration. In this study, five novel bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts e.g., SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 /SiO 2 with different molar ratios of zirconia and SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 as a parent catalyst were synthesized and applied to evaluate their effectiveness in enhancing the CO 2 desorption and solvent regeneration of 5M monoethanolamine solution with CO 2 loading of 0.5 ± 0.01 mol CO 2 /mol monoethanolamine at 97 °C. The catalysts were characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectrometry, pyridine-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, N 2 -adsorption-desorption, and ammonia-temperature programmed desorption. The results demonstrated that these catalysts can significantly reduce the heat duty for CO 2 desorption by 36.48% compared to without catalyst and enhance desorption rate by 35.1%. The results also showed that SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 /SiO 2 15% presented the highest efficiency compared to the other SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 /SiO 2 ratios and the super solid acid catalyst SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 . Additionally, to investigate if the catalysts induce any unfavorable effects on the amine, the absorption of CO 2 by regenerated amine solvent was studied. Finally, a reaction mechanism for the amine solvent regeneration with the synthesized catalyst e.g., SO 4 2− /ZrO 2 /SiO 2 was suggested.

Enhanced MEA Performance for an Intermediate-Temperature Fuel Cell with a KH5(PO4)2-Doped Polybenzimidazole Membrane

Yifan Li,Jing Hu,Joan Papavasiliou,Zhiyong Fu,Li Chen,Haibin Li

This work exhibits an effective approach to enhance the performance of membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) with KH5(PO4)2-doped PBI membrane, by adding phosphoric acid (PA) in the catalyst layer (CL). The ohmic resistance and single-cell performance of the MEA, treated with PA, are reduced by ~80% and improved by ~800%, respectively, compared to that of untreated MEA. Based on the MEA pretreated with PA, the influence of humidity and temperature on the resistance and the single-cell performance are investigated. Under humidified gas conditions, the ohmic resistance of MEA is reduced but the charge transfer resistance is slightly increased. Regarding the effect of temperature, the ohmic resistance of MEA becomes lower as the temperature elevates from 140 to 180 °C, but increases at 200 °C. The maximum peak power density presents at 180 °C and 20% RH with 454 mW cm−2. The peak power density is favored with temperature increase from 140 to 180 °C, but decreases with further increase to 200 °C. Moreover, when dry gas conditions are employed, the output performance is unstable, suggesting that humidification is necessary to inhibit degradation for a long-term stability test.

Devising piperazine-based liquid-liquid phase change absorbents with MEA and triglyme for energy-efficient CO₂ capture

Peng Gao,Liwang Wang,Zhisheng Zhao,Yuting Zhang,Anlin Liu,Yulong Chang,Liang Ma

The PZ-MEA-TGM-H 2 O phase change absorbent system was developed for CO 2 capture. • The phase-transition behavior of the PZ-MEA-TGM-H 2 O system is regulated by the PZ-to-water ratio. • The P 15 M 6 T 39 H 40 system exhibits high absorption rate and low energy consumption during CO 2 capture. • The phase-transition mechanism of PZ-MEA-TGM-H₂O has been fully elucidated. Liquid-liquid phase change absorbents offer substantial potential for reducing energy consumption in industrial CO₂ capture. Building on the favorable CO₂ capture performance of piperazine (PZ) and the high boiling point of triethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TGM), a PZ-TGM-H₂O phase change absorption system was developed. By incorporating various organic amines to tune the system, the addition of MEA was found to effectively enhance the absorption performance. Through systematic ratio optimization, the optimal formulation was identified as P 15 M 6 T 39 H 40 (mass ratio). Experimental results indicate that the P 15 M 6 T 39 H 40 system exhibits a cyclic CO 2 capacity of 2.1 mol/kg. The viscosity of the rich phase in the P 15 M 6 T 39 H 40 system at 30 °C is as low as 18.76 mPa·s, and the regeneration energy consumption is 2.75 GJ·t −1 CO₂, representing a 27.6% reduction relative to the conventional 30 wt% MEA system. Furthermore, 13 C NMR analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the driving force for the liquid-liquid phase transition primarily arises from the polarity difference between the product and the solvent. Cycling experiments demonstrated that the P 15 M 6 T 39 H 40 phase change absorbent developed in this study exhibits excellent cycling stability and holds significant potential for industrial CO 2 capture applications. Foam-driven interface optimization for intensified CO2 absorption: Experimental and molecular insights into surfactant–MEA hybrid systems

Zhenzhen Zhang,Xunxuan Heng,Zeyu Wang,Yucong Ge,Fang Liu,Li Yang,Xiao Yang,Kunlei Liu

Enhancing the CO 2 absorption efficiency of aqueous amine solutions while maintaining low energy penalties remains a central challenge for sustainable post-combustion carbon capture. In this study, a foam-interface regulation strategy is proposed by introducing five typical surfactants into monoethanolamine solutions. By integrating a multiscale approach encompassing dynamic foam analysis, CO 2 absorption-desorption testing, spectroscopic characterization, and molecular simulation, this study elucidates the physical mechanisms through which surfactants enhance CO 2 mass transfer via interfacial regulation. The results showed that the addition of surfactants significantly improved foam stability and interfacial area, increasing carbon dioxide absorption efficiency by up to 20 % and initial absorption rate by approximately 40 % compared to the pure MEA system, with 0.05 wt% being the threshold concentration for most systems. Notably, 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that the chemical absorption pathway remained unaltered, indicating a physical enhancement mechanism via interfacial structuring. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations revealed strengthened hydrogen bonding networks near the H 2 O–surfactant interface. This work demonstrates a low-dosage, interface-driven route to intensify CO 2 absorption without compromising solvent regenerability, offering a promising avenue for sustainable carbon capture process design.

Monoethanolamine (MEA) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with fast absorption rate as nonaqueous absorbent for CO2 capture

Lijiao Ma,Yudong Ding,Xun Zhu,Hong Wang,Min Cheng,Qiang Liao

To address the limitations of amine-based aqueous solutions, nonaqueous mixtures of monoethanolamine (MEA) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were developed for CO 2 capture. Key factors affecting absorption were systematically investigated, including MEA concentration (10–50 wt%), temperature (30–60 °C), pressure (100–220 kPa) and water content (0–70 wt%). At 30 °C and 140 kPa, the nonaqueous absorbent exhibited a comparable CO 2 absorption capacity to its aqueous solution, while achieving a fivefold increase in absorption rate. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis revealed that the thermal decomposition temperature of 30 wt%MEA-DMF was 83 °C, which was higher than that of the aqueous solution (70 °C), indicating improved thermal stability. The reaction mechanism was elucidated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), pH and conductivity measurements, density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. The solvent interactions in water-lean systems were found to impair absorption performance. CO 2 could react with MEA in nonaqueous environments to form carbamic acid, carbamate, and protonated MEA. The DMF component significantly enhanced the absorption rate by facilitating deprotonation. Overall, MEA-DMF solutions had superior CO 2 absorption capacity, faster reaction rate and greater thermal stability, without undergoing phase change. Additionally, the low evaporability, specific heat capacity, and evaporation enthalpy of DMF suggest reduced energy requirements for solvent regeneration. These findings support the potential of MEA-DMF systems as viable alternatives to conventional aqueous amine solutions for CO₂ capture.

Influence of compression effect on the MEA structure and performance based on M−N–C electrocatalysts for PEMFC

Mingjun Xu,Zhao Jin,Meiling Xiao,Changpeng Liu,Wei Xing

The single-atom dispersed active sites and the thicker catalytic layer of metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) electrocatalysts based membrane electrode assembly (MEA) exhibit notable distinctions from Pt-based MEA, necessitating targeted optimization. This study systematically investigates the influence of compression on both structure and performance of the M-N-C electrocatalysts based MEA. Four compression ratios, ranging from 11.5% to 39.3%, were examined across diverse operational conditions. The variations in impedance across different electrochemical regions are observed, resulting from the superposition of distinct impedance components. It is found that the insufficient compression leads to higher porosity and the formation of cracks between catalytic layer and membrane, adversely impacting internal resistance and proton transport. Increasing compression first acts the catalytic layer, and then gradually acts on the interface, membrane and gas diffusion layer, thereby reducing internal resistance, charge transfer resistances, albeit at the expense of heightened mass transfer resistance. Among these factors, the influence of internal resistance affects significance to total performance. Furthermore, compression influenced mass transfer differently in various layers. For the catalyst layer, the effect was uniform and sustained, while for the gas diffusion layer, it initially remained constant and then experienced a sudden deterioration over a certain extent. Optimal MEA performance is achieved when the compression ratio attains 40 %, which 2.1 times higher than the low compression MEA. This finding emphasizes the necessity for higher compression on M-N-C electrocatalysts based MEA compared to Pt-based MEA.

Effect of step‑wise mixing strategy with CO2‑MEA solution on carbonation curing of steel slag‑cement paste

Jianhui Liu,Junyu Chen,Hang Ruan,Bao Lu,Shuqing Zhang,Jinlang Yu,Zheng Chen,Caijun Shi

This study introduces a step-wise mixing strategy utilizing CO 2 -loaded monoethanolamine (CO 2 -MEA) solution as both a slag modifier and mixing water, followed by carbonation curing. The performance influence mechanisms of cement-based materials incorporating modified steel slag and CO 2 -MEA solution as mixing water were investigated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Results indicate that during the initial mixing stage, carbonation reactions between the CO 2 -MEA solution and free calcium oxide/silicate phases in steel slag generate calcium carbonate deposits on particle surfaces. These deposits increase surface roughness and specific surface area, enhance the CO 2 capture capacity of steel slag, and modify its surface chemical properties. Additionally, the strategy improves the volumetric stability of cement pastes, demonstrating its potential to mitigate expansion-related issues in practical applications. Despite the retardation of early hydration caused by the amine-rich mixing water, the compressive strength of the paste is increased by 1.8%, 10.4%, and 4.9% after carbonation curing for 2 h, 4 h, and 8 h, respectively, compared with the untreated group. This performance correlates with a 24.8% reduction in total porosity (from 34.7% to 26.1%) and improved thermal stability over prolonged curing. Ultimately, this combined modification and solvent replacement strategy achieves a maximum 9.5% enhancement in CO 2 uptake within the steel slag-cement pastes. These findings lay a mechanistic foundation for advancing CO 2 sequestration technologies while valorizing industrial by-products, establishing a scalable solution for developing low-carbon cementitious materials through synergistic resource recycling.

Low-cost, shapeable solid acid catalysts from binary clay blends for low-energy regeneration of CO2-loaded MEA

Yitao Gan,Wang Xin,Qian Xinfeng,Lijian Jin,Hang Yu,Wenrui Li,Sining Kong,Yujing Wu,Zhengda Yang,Linjun Yang

Low-cost binary clay catalysts were developed for CO 2 -loaded MEA regeneration. • Binary blending coupled with acid activation enhanced catalyst acidity and porosity. • HAB showed the highest CO 2 desorption performance among the tested catalysts. • HAB enabled lower-energy regeneration of CO 2 -loaded MEA. • HAB retained over 90% of its initial catalytic activity after eight regeneration cycles. Amine-based post-combustion CO 2 capture is a mature technology for industrial decarbonization, but its large-scale deployment remains constrained by the high energy demand of solvent regeneration. Herein, a series of low-cost solid acid catalysts were developed by binary blending of natural clay minerals (attapulgite, bentonite, and diatomite) followed by sulfuric acid activation. Binary blending alleviated clay agglomeration and improved the textural properties of the materials, although the corresponding enhancement in catalytic desorption performance varied among the three binary systems, with AB showing the most evident improvement. Subsequent sulfuric acid activation substantially enhanced the desorption performance of all three binary composites, with HAB exhibiting the best overall performance. Under the evaluated conditions, HAB reduced the relative regeneration heat duty to 65.8% of the blank value, corresponding to a 34.2% reduction in regeneration energy demand. Its superior performance is associated with the combined contributions of favorable pore accessibility and abundant surface acid sites. In situ Raman spectroscopy revealed faster attenuation of the characteristic bands associated with carbamate, bicarbonate, and carbonate in the presence of HAB, supporting its role in facilitating the conversion of major CO 2 -containing species and promoting CO 2 release during MEA regeneration. HAB retained approximately 90% of its initial catalytic activity after eight consecutive absorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, the shaped HAB-S catalyst retained most of the desorption performance of powdered HAB, with only an approximately 7.1% decrease in CO 2 desorption amount, while exhibiting an average single-pellet crushing strength of 48.8 N pellet −1 . These results demonstrate that acid-activated blended natural clays provide a low-cost, recyclable, and shapeable catalyst platform for reducing the regeneration energy demand of amine-based CO 2 capture.
