Metal–organic framework MIL-53(Al) was explored as the stationary phase for high-performance liquid chromatographic separation of position isomers using a binary and/or polar mobile phase. Baseline separations of xylene, dichlorobenzene, chlorotoluene and nitrophenol isomers were achieved on the slurry-packed MIL-53(Al) column with high resolution and good precision. The effects of mobile phase composition, injected sample mass and temperature were investigated. The separation of xylene, dichlorobenzene, chlorotoluene and nitrophenol isomers on MIL-53(Al) were controlled by entropy change.

An ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor was developed based on MIL-53(Al)@CdS QDs and SiO2@AuNPs for trichlorfon detection. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were used as a loading platform that provided a large surface area to load targets and modified materials onto the electrode. At the same time, SiO2@AuNPs loaded plenty of AuNPs which effectively increased the ECL resonance energy transfer between the CdS QDs, so that the ECL signal was strongly quenched and resulted in an amplified response. In the range of 10−11–10−4 M, the ECL response showed a linear relationship with the concentration (logarithm) of trichlorfon, and the detection limit was 5.1 × 10−12 M (S/N = 3). When the biosensor was applied to detect trichlorfon in lettuce, broccoli, cucumber, and chives, the recoveries obtained from the spiked samples were 97%–105%, 102%–104%, 100%–104%, and 98%–104%, respectively. Thus, this novel ECL biosensor has potential applications for the analysis of trichlorfon in food samples.

Background The aim of this study was to develop a class of novel MIL-53(Al) based composite with high phenolic compound adsorption capacity to treat highly toxic phenolic wastewater. Method MIL-53(Al)@AC-x composites with different AC loading ( x ) were constructed by combining MIL-53(Al) with cheap biomass AC derived from cheap rice husk. The adsorbents were characterized by various methods. Significant findings The results showed that the surface area and pore volume of all MIL-53(Al)@AC-x composites increased remarkably, which are much higher than those of pristine AC and MIL-53(Al). The p-nitrophenol adsorption rate of MIL-53(Al)@AC-10 was higher than pristine MIL-53(Al) by 36%. The adsorption performance decreased in the order of MIL-53(Al)@AC-10 > MIL-53(Al)@AC-15 > MIL-53(Al)@AC-5 > MIL-53(Al). The maximum adsorption capacity for p-nitrophenol of MIL-53(Al)@AC-10 reached 250 mg.g −1 , which are higher than the data reported in most literature. The fabrication of AC into MIL-53(Al) is a promising method to obtain a composite with high adsorption capacity and stability. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms fitted well with pseudo-second-order model and Langmiur model. The adsorption is mainly through the π-π and hydrogen bond interactions, and hydrophobic effect.

A series of highly-hydrophobic MIL-53-Al (MIL = Materials of Institut Lavoisier) frameworks synthesized via decoration of the Al-OH groups by alkyl phosphonic acid were developed as adsorbents for removing acetone from humid gas streams. The newly prepared materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), N 2 adsorption-desorption and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their adsorption behaviors toward acetone vapor under dry and wet conditions were studied subsequently. Results showed that alkyl phosphonic acid was successfully grafted into MIL-53-Al skeleton through coordinating interaction with Al 3+ generating MIL-53-Al@C x ( x = 12, 14, 18). The MIL-53-Al@C x exhibited similar crystal structure and thermal stability to parent MIL-53-Al. Furthermore, the modified materials showed significantly enhanced hydrophobicity . The water vapor uptake of MIL-53-Al@C 14 decreased by 72.55% at 75% relative humidity (RH). Dynamic adsorption experiments demonstrated that water vapor had almost no effect on the acetone adsorption performance of MIL-53-Al@C 14 . Under the condition of 90% RH, the acetone adsorption capacity of MIL-53-Al@C 14 was 102.98% higher than that of MIL-53-Al. Notably, MIL-53-Al@C 14 presented excellent adsorption reversibility and regeneration performance in 10 adsorption-desorption cycles. Taken together, the strategy of metal-OH group modification is an attractive way to improve the acetone adsorption performance over metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) under humid conditions. Besides, MIL-53-Al@C 14 would be deemed as a promising candidate for capturing acetone in high moisture environment.

Polypropylene (PP) flammability poses great fire risks for its application. A metal-organic framework (MOF), NH 2 -MIL-53(Al), was synthesized and subsequently integrated into PP, the flame-retardant efficacy in conjunction with piperazine pyrophosphate (PAPP) and melamine cyanurate (MCA) was additionally examined. When the total mass fraction of the additives was 25 %, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of PP composite reached 31.1 %, it also passed the UL-94 test with a V-0 rating. The peak heat release rate (pHRR) and the total heat release rate (THR) was reduced by 88.55 % and 79.75 %, respectively, compared with the pure PP. The char residual char percentage increased to 8.02 %. The Tensile Strength reached 30.1 MPa. The results indicate that adding NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) significantly enhanced the flame retardancy and thermal stability of PP composites, without significantly affecting their mechanical properties, which offers a novel potential direction for the advancement of polymer flame retardants (FRs).

Solid polymer composite electrolytes possess the benefits of superior compatibility with electrodes and good thermal characteristics for more secure energy storage equipment. Herein, a new gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) containing NH 2 -MIL-53(Al), [PP 13 ][TFSI], LiTFSI, and PVDF-HFP was prepared using a simple method of solution casting. The effects of encapsulating different ratios of ionic liquid ([PP 13 ][TFSI]) into the micropores of functionalized metal-organic frameworks (NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)) on the electrochemical properties were compared. XRD, SEM, Nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and electrochemical measurements were conducted. This GPE demonstrates a superior ionic conductivity of 8.08×10 –4 S cm –1 at 60 °C and can sustain a discharge specific capacity of 156.6 mAh g –1 at 0.2 C for over 100 cycles. This work might offer a potential approach to alleviate the solid-solid contact with the solid-state electrolyte and electrodes, and broadens up new window for the creation of all-solid-state batteries.

Novel structural designs for metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are expected to improve ion-transport behavior in composite solid electrolytes . Herein, upper-dimensional MIL-53(Al) nanofibers (MNFs, MIL-53 belongs to the MIL (Material Institute Lavoisier) group) with flower-like nanoflake structures have been designed and constructed via modified hydrothermal coordination. The optimized MNFs with high surface area and porosity can form abundant interfaces with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrix. The plasticization of MNFs to the PEO matrix will facilitate segmental movement of PEO chains to facilitate Li + conduction. The unsaturated open metal centers of MNFs can effectively capture bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anions (TFSI − ) to deliver more free lithium ions for transfer. Moreover, the upper-dimensional nanofiber structure endows lithium ions with a long-range and consecutive transport pathway. The obtained composite solid electrolyte (MNFs@PEO) presents a high ionic conductivity of 4.1 × 10 −4 S cm −1 and a great Li + transference number of 0.4 at 60 °C. The electrolyte also exhibits a stable Li plating/stripping behavior over 1000 h at 0.1 mA cm −1 with inhibited Li dendrite growth. Furthermore, the Li/LiFePO 4 and Li/LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 batteries with MNFs@PEO as electrolytes both display great cycling stabilities with high-capacity retention, indicating their potential applications in lithium metal batteries . The study will put forward new inspirations for designing advanced MOF-based composite solid electrolytes.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold significant potential for sample preparation, but single-MOF materials often face limitations in selectivity and extraction efficiency. To overcome these, a mesoporous MIL-53(Al)–NH 2 @UiO-66 composites with a core–shell structure was synthesized using an epitaxial growth strategy. This composite leverages the complementary properties of both MOFs, offering enhanced active sites and interaction forces for analytes. The structure and integration of the composite were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, confirming their successful integration. To address the challenge of detecting alkylphenols (APs) in food matrices, known for their endocrine-disrupting properties and low concentrations, a new solid-phase microextraction (SPME) Arrow was fabricated using the MIL-53(Al)–NH 2 @UiO-66 composite combined with polyacrylonitrile as a binder. APs were detected using ultra-performance liquid chromatography and quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-Q-ToF/MS). The developed SPME Arrow-UPLC-ESI-Q-ToF/MS method exhibits good linearity (R 2 ≥ 0.9958), wide linear range (0.01–1000 μg L –1 ), and high sensitivity (limits of detection ranging from 0.005 to 0.01 μg L –1 ) for APs determination. This method was validated for determining nine APs in milk samples from various packing materials, with spiked recoveries ranging from 85.2 % to 115 % and relative standard deviations from 3.4 % to 13.6 %. This study demonstrates the potential of MOF-on-MOF composites in enhancing the performance of adsorbents for SPME pretreatment, offering a promising approach for improving analytical methodologies in food safety.

Rapid and sensitive detection of picric acid (PA), a highly toxic and water-mobile nitroaromatic pollutant, is essential for environmental safety and public health protection. Herein, we fabricate a dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent probe by immobilizing high-load red-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs) onto NH₂-functionalized MIL-53(Al), forming an R-CDs/NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) composite for selective aqueous-phase PA sensing. R-CDs were hydrothermally synthesized with citric acid and neutral red as co-precursors. The loading efficiency was maximized by systematically optimizing precursor molar ratios and dilution conditions. The composite exhibits distinct selective fluorescence quenching in the presence of PA. Mechanistic characterizations, including fluorescence lifetime decay measurements and spectral overlap analysis, verify that the fluorescence quenching originates from two synergistic quenching pathways, namely competitive light absorption and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), rather than nonspecific physical interactions. This ratiometric sensing platform achieves a wide linear detection range of 0.1–70 μM and an ultralow limit of detection (LOD) of 32.9 nM. Spike-and-recovery assays using real environmental water samples (tap water, commercial bottled mineral water, and Jialing River surface water) produced recoveries of 99.7%–105.1%, with relative standard deviations (RSD) below 5.86% ( n = 3). Furthermore, a smartphone-enabled visual quantitative method based on RGB color channel analysis was constructed, enabling portable on-site detection without large-scale laboratory instrumentation.

The antibiotic florfenicol (FF) discharged into the aquatic environment may cause serious water pollution. Therefore, an effective way to eliminate FF antibiotics from the water bodies should be proposed. Herein, MIL-53(Al)-supported nano zero-valent iron (NZVI@MIL-53(Al)) was synthesized and applied to activate hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to spark the Fenton reaction for FF antibiotics removal. The characterization results demonstrated the successful loading and good dispersion of NZVI onto MIL-53(Al). 100 % FF antibiotics degradation could be achieved under the optimal reaction conditions, including an initial FF antibiotics concentration of 20 mg L −1 , initial solution pH of 3.0, NZVI@MIL-53(Al) dose of 25 mg L −1 , and H 2 O 2 concentration of 0.2 mM. And after four cycles, the FF antibiotic degradation efficiency was still 81.18 %. The lowest tolerance for HCO 3 − was observed while the degradation activity was maintained at the presence of Cl − and HA. EPR measurement and free radical quenching experiment showed that ·OH was the main reactive specie in the NZVI@MIL-53(Al)/H 2 O 2 system. FF antibiotics degradation involved hydroxylation reactions (electrophilic substitution), dehalogenation, hydrolysis, and cleavage based on the UPLC-MS/MS analysis and DFT calculation. Noteworthy, 0.247 mg L −1 of F − and 1.2 mg L −1 of Cl − were detected in the solution after the reaction due to the breakage of the stable C–Cl bond and C–F bond. Finally, this work revealed that the NZVI@MIL-53(Al), with high stability and recyclability, could be a potential heterogeneous catalyst for treating antibiotic wastewater.

Furfural is a typical biomass-derived platform chemical. Conventional processes for furfural production are uneconomical and energy-intensive because only about 3–6 wt% of furfural in the hydrolysate needs to be separated. In this study, a series of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by incorporating MIL-53(Al) particles (MAPs) into poly (ether-block-amide) (PEBA 2533) matrix for pervaporation separation of furfural from aqueous solutions. The MAPs with anisotropic morphology and tunable particle size were precisely synthesized by a high-efficiency solvent-controlled microwave synthetic strategy. Effects of MAPs on the microstructures, physicochemical properties of MAPs/PEBA MMMs were investigated in detail through SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, TGA, N 2 adsorption and contact angle measurements. The experimental results suggested that compared with the PEBA control membrane, the addition of MAPs notably reduced the permeation energy barrier for furfural, but not for water. The coin-like MAPs-16.7 filled MMMs presented the optimal separation performance, which exceeded other furfural-permselective membranes. Impressively, a high total flux of 3800 g∙m −2 ∙h −1 and an adequate furfural/water separation factor of 50.2 was achieved in PV separation of 1 wt% furfural aqueous solution at 80 °C, which could substantially reduce capital investment and equipment footprint. Furthermore, a continuous testing was operated for 200 h in ternary furfural/acetic acid/water simulated hydrolysate, highlighting the long-term membrane stability in realistic applications. High performance and long-term stability made MAPs/PEBA MMMs potential candidates for industrial furfural production.
