Green Production of Phthalic Anhydride from Biobased Furan and Maleic Anhydride by an Acid Resin Catalyst

Xiaojie Shao,Lijuan Su,Jiaojiao Zhang,Zishang Tian,Ning Zhang,Yingxiong Wang,Hongliang Wang,Xiaojing Cui,Xianglin Hou,Tiansheng Deng

The production of chemicals such as phthalic anhydride (PA) from renewable biomass is of crucial significance for sustainable social development. Herein, we demonstrate that a 99.0 mol % yield of PA can be achieved from a Diels–Alder adduct of furan and maleic anhydride on an acid resin catalyst. The active sites on the catalyst were produced by pretreating the resin with acetic anhydride. The excellent performance of the resin catalyst is attributed to its surface enrichment effect on the reactant and good ability to suppress the side reactions. Moreover, the catalyst deactivation mechanism was clarified to be the destruction of the resin skeleton during the reaction. These results will provide a practical route for the future industrial production of PA from renewable biomass.

Multi Stimuli-Responsive Aggregation-Induced Emission Active Polymer Platform Based on Tetraphenylethylene-Appended Maleic Anhydride Terpolymers

Xiaoning Guo,Tong Song,Dong Chen,Jinchang Zhu,Zhenlin Li,Qing Xia,Li Wang,Wantai Yang

Multi stimuli-responsive aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active polymers have great application prospects in high-tech innovations. Herein, three types of tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-containing monomers were synthesized and utilized in preparing TPE-appended maleic anhydride terpolymers. After hydrolysis, the produced TPE-appended maleic acid terpolymers have identical linear charge densities but different “primary” structures, which created widely varied microenvironments around the carboxylate and TPE groups. Benefiting from the synergistic interaction of the TPE moiety and the terpolymer conformation change, the TPE-appended maleic acid terpolymers exhibited fluorescence changes in response to multi stimuli, including pH, ionic strength, Ca2+, and bovine serum albumin. On both the “signaling” and the “stimuli acceptor” sides, the multi stimuli-responsive fluorescence behavior was influenced markedly by the terpolymer primary structure. The fundamental insights gained in the present work are important for developing an efficient and versatile stimuli-responsive AIE-active polymer platform for chemo-sensing, bioimaging, and so on.

Study of polypropylene/polyethylene terephthalate blends compatibilized with polypropylene double-grafted maleic anhydride and epoxy resin

Mengxia Xu,Jingshun Liao,Zhu Luo,Ruhui He,Shenglong Yang,Hai Li,Yehan Yang

Polypropylene double-grafted maleic anhydride and bisphenol A epoxy resin (PP-g-M-E) was successfully prepared by a single-step method and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Subsequently, it was employed as a compatibilizer to fabricate polypropylene (PP)/polyethylene terephthalate (PET) blends via melt extrusion. The content of the PET dispersed phase in the composite varied from 0 to 30 phr. The microstructure and morphology of the composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The addition of PP-g-M-E increased the interfacial interaction between the two phases and improved the compatibility and thermal stability of the system. In the presence of the compatibilizer, the crystallinity of the matrix phase (PP) increased, while that of the dispersed phase (PET) decreased owing to the heterogeneous nucleation effect of uniformly distributed PET. Double grafting of the PP-g-M-E compatibilizer considerably enhanced the mechanical performance of the PP/PET blend system. The elongation at break of the modified sample exceeded that of the PP/PET blends by 117.55%, and the flexural and impact properties also showed considerable improvement.

Efficient Cu-0.03Fe/SiO2 catalysts for one-pot deep hydrogenation of maleic anhydride to 1,4-butanediol

Yuli Jing,Yufei Li,Junwen Chen,Kai Cui,Peng Wu,Xiaohong Li

The demand for biodegradable plastics is increasing in line with the growth in environmental protection measures. Consequently, the demand for 1,4-butanediol (BDO), the upstream key raw material for biodegradable plastics, has increased significantly. BDO can be obtained through deep hydrogenation of maleic anhydride (MA). However, due to the complicated network involved in the MA hydrogenation reaction, it is rather difficult to obtain BDO with satisfactory yield via the one-pot deep hydrogenation of MA. In this work, Cu-0.03Fe/SiO2 catalysts were prepared by hydrothermal and co-precipitation methods and applied to the one-pot deep hydrogenation of MA to BDO, affording 92.7-94.4% BDO yield under mild conditions (190 °C, 5 MPa of H2 pressure). This value surpasses the results reported in the literature up to now. Moreover, the Cu-0.03Fe/SiO2 catalyst prepared by a modified hydrothermal method can be reused for at least four times without any distinct loss in activity or selectivity to BDO. A series of techniques were adopted to characterize the Cu-Fe/SiO2 catalysts to gain insights into the structure-performance relationship in the MA hydrogenation to BDO.

Improving Flame-Retardant Properties of Poly (Lactic Acid) Composites Using Maleic Anhydride-Modified DOPO and SiO2

Cun-ying Zhang,De-fang Zhao,Yu-hui Xie,Dong Feng,Feng Wu,Delong Xie,Yuxin Liu,Yi Mei

Polylactic acid (PLA) is well regarded for its excellent environmental friendliness; however, its flammability presents a significant barrier to wider applications. Developing highly flame-retardant PLA (with a limiting oxygen index, LOI, greater than 30%) using simple, general methods remains a challenge. In this study, maleic anhydride (MA) was used to modify 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-oxide (DOPO), enhancing its thermal stability and interaction with the PLA matrix. Additionally, by leveraging the carbonization effect of nano-SiO 2 , DOPO-MA was compounded with nanosilica to further improve PLA's flame-retardant properties. As a result, a highly flame-retardant PLA with an LOI of 31.3% and a UL-94 V-0 rating was successfully prepared using 5 wt.% DOPO-MA and 3 wt.% SiO 2 . Furthermore, total heat release (THR) and peak heat release rates (pHRR) of PLA decreased by 7% and 25%, respectively. Detailed analysis of the flame-retardant mechanism revealed that nano-SiO 2 significantly increased the residual char content and promoted the formation of a more stable graphite carbon structure. Moreover, silica effectively suppressed the generation of combustible gases in the pyrolysis products of PLA, collectively enhancing its flame-retardant properties. This study presents a straightforward and scalable approach for designing highly efficient phosphorus/silica-containing synergistic flame retardants, offering valuable insights into PLA flame retardancy.

Biodegradation of Poly(Styrene-Alt-Maleic Anhydride) in Soil and Its Toxic Effects on the Environment

Jiayi Xin,Ziyang Song,Bo Zheng,Jiawen Hu,Changwen Zhao,Dong Chen,Wantai Yang

In recent years, synthetic polymers have become integral to modern society, but their improper disposal has led to significant environmental challenges. Therefore, it is of great significance to investigate the environmental impact of polymer waste. Herein, we conducted comprehensive research on the biodegradability of poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PSM) when exposed to soil and microbes, as well as its toxic effects on soybean seedlings and Eisenia fetida. The biodegradation process of PSM was thoroughly evaluated using respirometry tests, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, weight loss analysis, and bacterial reproduction tests. After 90 days of incubation in soil, the mineralization ratio of PSM reached 15%, and the weight-average molecular weight gradually decreased from 28.0 to 14.5 kg/mol in the first 14 days. Additionally, PSM experienced a 50% degradation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa after 30 days. In terms of phytotoxicity, PSM showed slight effects on the morphology of soybean seedlings while inducing oxidative stress in roots. The toxic effects of PSM on Eisenia fetida were investigated using both filter paper and soil contact methods. The filter paper contact test showed that the LC50 value was above 1000.0 μg/cm2 at 48 h, while the soil contact test indicated an LC50 value of 93.34 g/kg at 7 days. In conclusion, PSM demonstrates excellent biodegradability and low biotoxicity, suggesting great potential for emerging environmental applications.

Enhanced bending electromechanical properties of maleic anhydride-grafted SEBS gels by blending with acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer

Yi Liu,Bo Wu,Ying Dan Liu,Yongri Liang

The poly(styrene-b-ethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS) gel which a type of electroactive thermoplastic elastomer has significant intrinsic electromechanical coupling effect owing to its unique microphase separated structure. However, the relationship between the structure and electromechanical properties of SEBS gel remains incompletely understood. This study investigates the effects of polar groups and nanostructure parameters on the bending electromechanical property of SEBS gel for improving its bending electromechanical properties, using maleic anhydride-grafted SEBS/white oil (WO) gel (SEBS-M gel) and blends of SEBS-M gel with acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer (SAN). The SEBS-M gel/SAN films exhibited a hexagonally packed cylinder (HEX) morphology, and the radius of polystyrene domains (r PS ) as well as the thickness of poly(ethylene-co-butylene) (PEB) domains (d PEB ) in the SEBS-M gel/SAN slightly decreased with increasing SAN content up to 15 phr, followed by an increase. The bending displacement and actuation stress of SEBS-M gel/SAN increased with increasing SAN content up to 15 phr. The bending displacement of SEBS-M gel at 1.4 kV is approximately 74 % of that of SEBS gel, while the bending displacement of SEBS-M gel/SAN-15 at 1.4 kV is approximately 195 % and 266 % higher than that of SEBS gel and SEBS-M gel when the SAN content reaches 15 phr, respectively. The grafted maleic anhydride has a counteractive effect on the bending electromechanical properties of SEBS gel, while blending with a certain amount of SAN in SEBS-M gel has a synergistic effect on the bending electromechanical properties of SEBS gel. It is demonstrated that the enchantment of bending electromechanical properties of SEBS gel is achieved not only by adjusting the parameters of its microphase-separated structure but also by inducing segment deformation through electric field-induced dipole orientations.

Biodegradation and Ecotoxicity of Poly(1-Hexene-Maleic Anhydride): Insights into Environmental Behavior and Biological Impact

Jiayi Xin,Jiawen Hu,Ziyang Song,Changwen Zhao,Dong Chen,Wantai Yang

The persistent accumulation of polymers in terrestrial ecosystems poses significant environmental challenges. Herein, the biodegradation of poly(1-hexene-maleic anhydride) (HMA) in soil and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated to mitigate its environmental impact. The experimental results revealed that the mineralization rate of HMA reached 17.6% after 90 days of incubation in soil. Bacterial degradation led to a 79.0% weight loss after cultivation with Pseudomonas aeruginosa for 30 days. In addition, HMA exposure induced distinct shifts in soil microbial communities, with Proteobacteria abundance increasing from 40.3 to 48.9% after the initial 5 days but subsequently declining to 34.6% due to the inhibitory effects of biodegradation intermediates. Furthermore, phytotoxicity assays demonstrated that soybean seedlings exhibited pronounced root elongation, reduced lateral root formation, and elevated oxidative stress biomarkers after HMA exposure. Earthworm (Eisenia fetida) tests revealed that the biotoxicity of HMA depended on both concentration and exposure time. The median lethal concentration after 24 h was 3.63 mg/cm2, and the mortality rate reached 46.7% after 14 days in soil. Progressive degradation of HMA mitigated both oxidative stress and biotoxic effects over time, indicating a self-attenuating ecological risk profile. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the environmental behavior, biodegradation mechanisms, and biotoxic effects of HMA, offering valuable insights for the design and assessment of sustainable petroleum-based polymers.

Excellent self-healing and antifogging coatings based on polyvinyl alcohol/hydrolyzed poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride)

Luo Shuai,Qiao Xuan,Wang Qiu-Yu,Zhang Yun-Fei,Fu Ping,Lin Zhi-Dong,Du Fei-Peng,Cheng Chun

To develop low-cost and high-performance self-healing antifogging coatings, polyvinyl alcohol/hydrolyzed poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PVA/H-PSMA) coatings were prepared from a mixed solution of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hydrolyzed poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (H-PSMA) via spin coating and annealing. The microstructure, antifogging behavior, and self-healing ability were investigated. High transparency and low surface roughness were observed when the PVA/H-PSMA film was coated on glass slides. The PVA/H-PSMA coatings showed excellent antifogging performance in a warm, humid environment. The coatings also performed well when transferred from a refrigerator to room temperature. The antifogging coatings showed desirable water resistance due to strong chemical bonding between PVA and H-PSMA, as well as excellent self-healing ability due to hydrogen bonding self-assembly in the PVA/H-PSMA structure. The coatings still exhibited excellent antifogging effects after 20 scratching-repairing cycles, illustrating their potential use in practical applications.

Fabrication of CdxZn1−xS@VPO (x = 0.2) Nanocomposites for n-Butane Selective Oxidation Toward Maleic Anhydride

Faizan Muhammad,Saeed Aamir,Song Piao,Zhang Ruirui,Liu Ruixia,Chang Zhi,Wu Liuzhu,Zhang Manyuan

Vanadium phosphorous oxide (VPO) catalysts have been recognized as heterogeneous catalyst for selective oxidation of low-carbon alkanes i.e., n -butane toward maleic anhydride. This process has widely gained attention globally due to its highly selective and cost-effective process. Herein, we employed Cd 0 . 2 Zn 0 . 8 S as a support for the VPO catalyst and evaluated its n -butane catalytic performance. Compared to the unpromoted catalyst (Blank-VPO), a higher n -butane conversion and MA yield were successfully obtained from the promoted catalyst (Cd 0 . 2 Zn 0 . 8 S@VPO). Interestingly, it reduces the byproducts, i.e., CO 2 and CO emission. Characterization methods such as TGA, XRD, EDS, SEM, FTIR, NH 3 -TPD, XPS, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the Cd 0 . 2 Zn 0 . 8 S, VPO precursor and catalyst. Performance of polylactic acid/polycaprolactone/microcrystalline cellulose biocomposites with different filler contents and maleic anhydride compatibilization

Gaoyuan Ye,Zelong Li,Boyuan Chen,Xin Bai,Xu Chen,Yingcheng Hu

In this study, polylactic acid (PLA)/polycaprolactone (PCL)/microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) composites and PLA/PCL/MCC composite compatibilized by the maleic anhydride (MA) copolymer were prepared via two-screw extrusion technology. The mechanical results showed that the strength and break elongation of the ternary composites are decreased with the increase in the MCC contents. After the grafting copolymer was added, due to the better compatibility between the components of the composite, the strength and break elongation of the composite are significantly improved compared with that of ungrafted composite. According to the conducted differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, the crystallinity of the PLA/PCL/MCC composites is increased with the increase in the MCC content, and the crystallinity of the grafted composites is higher. In addition, the 3D printed PLA/PLAma/PCL/5MCC composite exhibits good biocompatibility and adhesion with MCF-7 cells, thus indicating its bright application prospects as a biomaterial scaffold material in tissue engineering.

Microencapsulation and evaluation of styrene maleic anhydride/epoxy for mechanical triggering self-healing of cementitious materials

Wenting Li,Qi Wei,Qing Chen,Zhengwu Jiang

Capsule-based self-healing of cementitious materials is a promising solution to improve the serviceability and to prolong the longevity of concrete structures. The successful use of mechanical triggering microcapsules to achieve cracks healing is still challenging and is closely dependent on the breakage of capsules upon crack formation . In this study, self-healing microcapsules were synthesized via complex coacervation using a styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) shell and an epoxy resin adhesive . The SMA/gelatin bi-layer wall formed with gelatin as the out layer for better trigger sensitivity under crack formation. The effects of various preparation parameters, referring to stirring rate, temperature, core-shell ratio and pH, have been investigated by characterizing the microcapsule morphology, shell thickness, size distribution, and chemical nature. The morphology demonstrates the encapsulation ability of SMA/gelatin and the spherical shape facilitates the rupture under crack formation. The elastic modulus and hardness of the microcapsules were determined using nano-indentation to assess the interfacial bonding and likelihood of mechanical triggering. Self-healing functionality of the developed microcapsules were validated in paste according to the in situ Acoustic Emission measurement.
