Ligand-Engineered Mn-MOFs Derived Mn2O3 for Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Conversion to Ethylene Urea

Junxi Tang,Yue Zhang,Jun Yin,Yiwen Chen,Guocheng Deng,Yulong Jin,Jie Xu,Bing Xue,Fei Wang

The utilization of carbon dioxide (CO2) for synthesizing value-added chemicals represents a promising environmentally sustainable strategy. Herein, we synthesized a series of Mn2O3catalysts derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporating three different ligands—homophthalic tricarboxylic acid (H3BTC), 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2BDC), and a combination of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) with H3BTC—via a hydrothermal method for ethylene urea (EU) production from CO2and ethylenediamine (EDA). The Mn2O3catalyst derived from the H3BTC+PVP ligand system (designated MnTP) demonstrated superior catalytic performance, achieving 97% EDA conversion and 97% EU selectivity under mild conditions (100 °C, 1 min), which surpassed all previously reported catalysts under comparable conditions. The enhanced activity originated from structural improvements induced by the H3BTC+PVP precursors, particularly the promotion of oxygen vacancies and Mn3+species, thereby facilitating efficient CO2activation and binding. This work establishes a novel strategy for the sustainable conversion of CO2into high-value cyclic ureas through rational catalyst design.

Micromotor-assisted fluorescence detection of Hg2+ with bio-inspired AO–Mn2O3/γ-AlO(OH)

Tingting Li,Yangsai Lyu,Jia Li,Chengyan Wang,Ningning Xing,Jie Yang,Min Zuo

Micromotors have held great promise for environmental treatment due to their unique self-propelled movement that can significantly accelerate the chemical process in solution. Herein, we have developed a new AO–Mn2O3/γ-AlO(OH) fluorescent micromotor using renewable and uniquely hollow kapok fibers as biological templates. The AO–Mn2O3/γ-AlO(OH) micromotor was powered by the asymmetric decomposition of hydrogen peroxide fuel catalyzed by Mn2O3, reaching a maximum speed of 139.6 μm s−1 in 3% H2O2 solution. The micromotor revealed a markedly enhanced fluorescence effect compared to both pure AO solution and non-micromotor counterparts and exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+ detection. The detection range and limit for Hg2+ were 5 × 10−8–5 × 10−5 M and 2.25 × 10−8 M, respectively. The enhanced Hg2+ sensing benefited from the synergy of enhanced fluorescence via the inhibition of the dimerization of AO, fluorescence quenching induced by charge transfer and the enhanced contact between the micromotor and Hg2+ ions resulted from the self-propelled motion. This micromotor-assisted fluorescence detection idea provided a new strategy for the development of sensors with high sensitivity.

Hierarchically porous core-shell microspheres assembled from Mn2O3/TiO2 nanoparticles for enhanced lithium storage

Qi Zhou,Min Zeng,Xin Wu,Yuqing Zhang,Getong Qin

In this paper, monodispersed bicomponent microspheres were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method with MnSO 4 ·H 2 O acting as soft templates, the target product takes a porous spherical morphology and hierarchical core-shell configuration assembled by primary TiO 2 and Mn 2 O 3 nanoparticles . In evaluating as anode, the Mn 2 O 3 /TiO 2 electrodes exhibit extraordinarily higher reversible capacity (around 1000 mAh g −1 at a current density of 100 mA/g up to 180 cycles) than bare TiO 2 , also deliver advanced rate performance and impressive cyclability (250 mAh g −1 even at 2000 mA g −1 after 1000 cycles) for promising lithium storage. The enhanced performance can be traceable to the synergistic effect and tightly coupled interfacial jointing of different components. Specifically, the differential capacity (dQ/dV) analysis has been applied to explore the capacity increasing behavior during the repeated deep cycles, indicating it is essentially related to the electrochemical reconstruction.

Robust oxygen vacancies induced by in situ interfacial engineered NiMn2O4/Mn2O3 heterostructure for durable ozone elimination

Nannan Zhang,Wei Guo,Yihan Zhang,Bihui Zhou,Yang Xiao,Baojun Liu,Jincheng Mu

Oxygen vacancies (V o ) are the key reactive sites for the decomposition of airborne ozone over Mn-based oxide catalysts, while their stability is still challenging due to the difficulty in desorption of residual oxygen species. Herein, an interfacial engineered NiMn 2 O 4 /Mn 2 O 3 catalyst (NiMnO x ) is in situ constructed from Ni-modified Mn-based metal–organic frameworks, and applied for O 3 decomposition at room temperature. The optimal catalyst exhibits over 96 % of O 3 removal efficiency ([O 3 ] = 40 ppm) after more than 75 h of continuous operation under 50 % relative humidity. Integrated experimental and theoretical findings indicate that the constructed NiMn 2 O 4 /Mn 2 O 3 interface structure induces the charge rearrangement and accelerates charge shuttle across the interface, which reduces the formation energy of V o and promotes the formation of abundant and robust V o , boosting the redox capacity of the catalyst. The unique configuration effectively lowers the adsorption energy barrier of O 3 and inhibits the adsorption of H 2 O, driving the rate-limiting step (decomposition of the second O 3 ) with a negative reaction energy (–0.01 eV), thus significantly enhancing the reaction efficiency under extreme environments. This study presents a novel interfacial engineering strategy for the design of efficient manganese-based catalysts with robust V o , achieving efficient and stable O 3 decomposition.

Pioneering integration of bimetallic Fe2O3-Mn2O3 nanoparticles into polyamide nanofiltration membranes for enhanced antibiotic wastewater treatment

Yidan Ding,Hanchen Zhang,Liguo Shen,Yang Jiao,Yanchao Xu,Hongjun Lin

High-concentration antibiotic wastewater treatment presents a formidable challenge, and polyamide nanofiltration membranes have emerged as a promising solution to this challenge. However, efficient membranes and involved separation mechanisms are still being explored. This study endeavors to fill this knowledge gap by pioneering the integration of bimetallic Fe 2 O 3 -Mn 2 O 3 nanoparticles into the polyamide selective layer, resulting in the development of a thin-film nanocomposite nanofiltration membrane. The membrane showed impressive water permeance (10.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and a remarkable Na 2 SO 4 rejection (97.1 %). Three antibiotics (tetracycline, clindamycin phosphate, and tobramycin) with similar molecular weights but varying molecular conformation and charge were treated using these membranes. All three antibiotics exhibited substantial rejection rates: tetracycline at 97.1 %, clindamycin phosphate at 95.0 %, and tobramycin at 87.0 %. It was discerned that the separation efficacy was intimately tethered to both antibiotics’ molecular conformation and charge. Antibiotics possessing a rigid structural archetype, exemplified by tetracycline, attained highest rejection rates. Clindamycin phosphate, with its flexible molecular structure and negative charge, demonstrated a superior rejection rate to tobramycin, which has a positive charge. This differential performance is ascribed to the charge exclusion effect. The insights gained from this work hold significant implications for the practical application of membrane separation methods in treating antibiotic wastewater.

Visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin by a ternary Mn2O3/Mn3O4/MnO2 valence state heterojunction

Jianhui Zhao,Zhiwei Zhao,Ning Li,Jun Nan,Ruixin Yu,Jinying Du

Valence state heterostructure exhibits great potential for contaminants remediation from water and wastewater with effective charge separation and little energy loss. However, the preparation process commonly shows complex with uncontrolled manner, forming undesired valence states, which hinders the advancement of valence state heterostructure. Herein, an Oxone induced strategy is established to controllably design manganese-based valence state heterostructure for the first time. A superior Mn 2 O 3 /Mn 3 O 4 /MnO 2 (molar ratio of 3:1:2) photocatalyst with dual Ⅱ heterostructures was generated by Oxone (0.3 mM) induced Mn 2 O 3 (0.2 g/L) under visible light. The Mn 2 O 3 /Mn 3 O 4 /MnO 2 heterojunction achieved 95.6% removal and 63.9% mineralization of ciprofloxacin (cipro) under visible light irradiation for 40 min. The excellent catalytic performance was derived from the improved surface area, decreased isoelectric point, enhanced light absorption and efficient charge separation of the Mn 2 O 3 /Mn 3 O 4 /MnO 2 heterostructure. Moreover, the radicals trapping experiment and Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurement revealed the dominant roles of holes and superoxide radicals for cipro degradation. Furthermore, the reusable Mn 2 O 3 /Mn 3 O 4 /MnO 2 could remove cipro selectively with co-existing natural organic matters and inorganic ions, which exhibited high practicability in real waters. Impressively, this work provides an innovative approach for controllable design of valence state heterostructure and fabricates a promising photocatalyst towards antibiotics degradation.

Magnetic field enhanced denitrification in nitrate and ammonia contaminated water under 3D/2D Mn2O3/g-C3N4 photocatalysis

Jianhui Zhao,Ning Li,Ruixin Yu,Zhiwei Zhao,Jun Nan

It is difficult to achieve concurrent removal of nitrate (NO 3 − -N) and ammonia (NH 4 + -N) from water thoroughly by photocatalysis due to their opposite charges and inappropriate potentials of photo-induced carriers. Herein, an innovative magnetic field enhanced 3D/2D Mn 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic system was developed for denitrification from NO 3 − -N and NH 4 + -N contaminated water under visible light. High removal efficiency of 94.5% and 97.4% for NO 3 − -N and NH 4 + -N were achieved after imposing magnetic field. Impressively, the extra magnetic field integrated the advantages of providing driving force for NO 3 − -N and NH 4 + -N approaching catalyst surface as well as facilitating separation of photo-induced charge carriers in newly-formed II type heterojunction by generating Lorentz force . Interestingly, the electrons on conduction band of g-C 3 N 4 could reduce NO 3 − -N to NO 2 − -N, N 2 and NH 4 + -N. Subsequently, the produced NO 2 − -N could be reduced to N 2 and NH 4 + -N. Meanwhile, the holes on valence band of Mn 2 O 3 could convert NH 4 + -N to N 2 selectively, which made the dominate contribution to high N 2 recovery (93.2%) during photocatalysis. Moreover, the reusable Mn 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 achieved efficient denitrification under magnetic assisted photocatalysis in real water backgrounds such as tap water and river water. This study provided an efficient and promising strategy for nitrogen remediation from water.

Interfacial synergy in setaria viridi-like Mn2O3@MnO2 heterojunctions with switchable nanotube/nanosheet morphologies for HCHO catalytic oxidation

Suhong Lu,Shuo Wang,Chengyu Xu,Yewei Chen,Nan Sun,Jurong Liu,Yuzhen Fang,Guilong Liu

A series of setaria viridis-like Mn 2 O 3 @MnO 2 - T ( T = 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 h) heterojunctions with switchable nanotube/nanosheet morphologies were synthesized via a controllable redox process. This involved precisely regulating the duration of acidic KMnO 4 treatment to induce in situ MnO 2 growth on rod-like Mn 2 O 3 substrates. Among these, Mn 2 O 3 @MnO 2 -12 exhibited the highest catalytic activity and outstanding stability, achieving 100 % conversion of 150 ppm HCHO at 50 °C under conditions of 30 % relative humidity and 36,000 mL g cat −1 h −1 . The strong electronic coupling at the interface between the Mn 2 O 3 (211) and MnO 2 (110) planes lowered the energy barrier for HCHO oxidation. Lattice mismatch at this interface likely induced oxygen vacancies, critical for activating O 2 into reactive oxygen species. Correspondingly, abundant surface active oxygen was observed in Mn 2 O 3 @MnO 2 -12, which contributed to the formation of dioxymethylene and formate intermediates, as monitored by in situ DRIFTS. Furthermore, greater charge enrichment on Mn combined with a lower work function ( W f ) indicated enhanced electron transfer to reactants and intermediates, establishing a favorable catalytic environment. This study provides a viable strategy for designing cost-effective, highly efficient transition metal oxide catalysts suitable for low-temperature HCHO oxidation.

Nanoconfined and Chemically Bonded MnO@Mn2O3 Heterojunctions Within Carbon Nanotubes for Fibrous Supercapacitor with Ultra-Long Cycle Stability

Juan Zhang,Rui Gao,Xiaona Yang,Qianyi Ma,Haoze Zhang,Weinan Zhao,Qingli Xu,Aixi Pan,Xinyi Chen,Jian Wang,Ning Chen,Xinhou Wang,Aiping Yu,Kun Zhang

Carbon-based fibrous supercapacitors (FSSCs) are promising power sources for wearable electronics, often compounding with transition metal oxides (TMOs) to improve energy density. However, conventional methods introducing TMOs onto exterior surfaces of carbon-based fibers typically degrade electrical transport and cycle stability. Herein, nanoconfined MnO@Mn 2 O 3 heterojunctions within carbon nanotube (CNT) (MOIC) composite FSSCs stabilized by Mn─O─C bonds, exhibiting record cycle stability with 95.7% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles and 89.4% after 50 000 cycles are reported. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses confirm MnO@Mn 2 O 3 heterostructure, which arises through a partial phase transformation from MnO to Mn 2 O 3 , as further supported by density functional theory calculations. Mn─O─C chemical bonds, as verified through XPS, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, and XANES analyses, facilitate 3D electron transport, enabling MOIC composite fiber superior electrical conductivity than CNT fiber. The nanoconfinement of Mn 2+ within CNTs, driven by capillary effects and electrostatic repulsion between protonated CNTs and Mn 2+ , preserves the clean exterior surfaces of CNTs. This configuration enables the successful wet-spinning of MOIC composite fibers with three times the tensile strength of fibers without nanoconfinement. This work opens new pathways for designing carbon/metal oxide hybridized supercapacitors for wearable energy storage applications.

Mn2O3-Na3PO4/TiO2 catalyst with high anti-agglomeration and attrition resistance for fluidized-bed oxidative coupling of methane

Jiayong Ni,Jiaqi Si,Tian Lan,Weidong Sun,Guofeng Zhao,Ye Liu,Yong Lu

The fluidized-bed reactor is a preferred option for the design of an intrinsic-safety oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) process, because it permits such strongly exothermic reaction to proceed isothermally. However, the widely studied Mn-Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalyst cannot meet the requirements of the fluidized-bed reaction. Ground-breaking fluid catalyst coupling high activity/selectivity with good anti-agglomeration and high attrition resistance represents a grand challenge. Herein, we report an Mn 2 O 3 -Na 3 PO 4 /TiO 2 catalyst (280–355 μm) for the fluidized-bed OCM process, achieving 28.5% CH 4 conversion with 70.1% C 2 -C 3 selectivity at 760 °C for a feed gas of CH 4 /O 2 of 5/1 while remaining unchanged within 16 h test. This catalyst shows significant fluidization behavior under OCM reaction conditions. It is found that TiO 2 nanorods tangle up with each other to form an interpenetrating nano-structure thereby inducing strong mechanical strength and robustness with a low attrition index of only 2.8%. Moreover, high melting-point Na 3 PO 4 and use of TiO 2 support impart the catalyst to good anti-agglomeration because of eradication of formation of the sticky Na 2 Si 2 O 5 and molten Na 2 WO 4 (main cause for agglomeration) encountered in the Mn-Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 .

Role of oxygen vacancies and Mn sites in hierarchical Mn2O3/LaMnO3-δ perovskite composites for aqueous organic pollutants decontamination

Yuxian Wang,Lulu Chen,Hongbin Cao,Zhaoxu Chi,Chunmao Chen,Xiaoguang Duan,Yongbing Xie,Fei Qi,Weiyu Song,Jian Liu,Shaobin Wang

La-based perovskites are catalytically active owing to the oxygen vacancies, redox metal centers of B sites and surface hydroxyl groups. Nevertheless, the insights into these active centers on environmental catalysis are still insufficient. In this study, hierarchical mixed oxides perovskite microspheres were synthesized for catalytic ozonation over oxalic acid and benzotriazole. LaMn 4 O x , with LaMnO 3-δ as the dominant crystal phase, demonstrated superior catalytic activity to Mn 2 O 3 and LaMnO 3 synthesized from citric acid sol-gel method. Temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 (NH 3 -TPD) and pyridine-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (pyridine-FTIR) tests proved Lewis acid as the main acid type. Temperature-programmed reduction of H 2 (H 2 -TPR), O 2 -TPD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated the presence of oxygen vacancies and mixed valences of Mn in the crystal structure facilitated the catalytic process. Moreover, the content of oxygen vacancy was calculated by iodometric titration method. With the aid of theoretical calculations, oxygen vacancies were found to exhibit a strong affinity toward ozone adsorption, where ozone molecules spontaneously dissociated into reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as O 2 − and 1 O 2 . The B site of Mn facilitated ozone decomposition by extending the O O bond of ozone due to the electron transfer from Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ redox cycle. In-situ EPR and quenching tests confirmed the contribution of O 2 − and 1 O 2 in benzotriazole degradation along with OH. This study stepped further to unveil the ozone adsorption/decomposition and ROS generation on nanoscale perovskite-based composites.

High-performance LiMnPO4/C nanoplates synthesized by negative pressure immersion and a solid state reaction using nanoporous Mn2O3 precursors

Jugong Zheng,Cancan Qin,Tongfu Wu,Shuangfei Xie,Liang Ni,Muyang Peng,Yuefeng Tang,Yanfeng Chen

Preparing high-performance LiMnPO4 is still a large obstacle due to its sluggish electrochemical kinetics. To overcome this problem, a novel method is developed for LiMnPO4/C nanoplates from nanoporous Mn2O3 precursors. There are two advantages. Firstly, through negative pressure immersion, lithium dihydrogen phosphate (LiH2PO4), lithium hydroxide (LiOH) and sucrose (C12H22O11) are deposited on the surface of porous Mn2O3 nanosheets. In the following solid-state reaction, three dimensional continuous conductive carbon is wrapped uniformly around the LiMnPO4/C nanoplates, which greatly improved the conductivity. Secondly, (010) exposed facets are obtained using the Mn2O3 hierarchical microspheres as precursors, which allows for a fast transmission of Li+ ions improving the rate capability. As a result, the as-synthesized L-Mn2O3-LMP/C samples exhibit a superior rate performance with discharge capacities of 157.3 mA h g−1 at C/20, 122.6 mA h g−1 at 1C, and 105.8 mA h g−1 at 2C. Meanwhile, they can retain 99.3% of the initial capacity after 100 cycles at 1C, revealing an excellent cycling stability. This method sheds more light on the fabrication of high-performance LiMnPO4/C cathode materials and is suitable for large scale productions.
