A plant petal template synthesis of Mn3O4 nanosheets for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Zhiqiang Fang,Rui Wang,Jiaoyang Chen,Fei Huang,Long Chen,Shuangquan Lin,Pengfei Jin,Shiyou Guan

Transition-metal oxides are a primary focus in the development of oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts due to their demonstrated efficacy. However, the structural characteristics of these materials often necessitate the use of hazardous, multi-step synthesis methods. In this study, we present a straightforward impregnation technique utilizing plant petal templates for the synthesis of catalytic Mn 3 O 4 nanosheets. The resulting lamellar Mn 3 O 4 nanosheets exhibit a 320 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 , a reduced Tafel slope of 131 mV dec −1 , and enhanced durability in alkaline environments. The successful fabrication of these manganese oxide nanosheets may offer a novel approach for the rational design of high-performance OER catalysts.

Fabrication of highly dispersed Pd-Mn3O4 catalyst for efficient catalytic propane total oxidation

Chao Feng,Yunxia Wang,Chong Chen,Xueqing Fu,Yuan Pan,Hongchuan Xin,Zhong Wang,Yukun Lu,Xuebing Li,Runduo Zhang,Yunqi Liu

Adjusting the interaction between dual active components for enhancing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) degradation is an effective but still challenging means of air pollution control. Herein, a limited pyrolysis oxidation strategy was adopted to prepare Pd-Mn 3 O 4 spinel catalysts with uniform morphology and active component dispersion. Among these, 1.08Pd-Mn 3 O 4 presented the highest catalytic efficiency with a T 90 value of 240 °C, which was 94 °C lower than that of Mn 3 O 4 . Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results revealed that the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) effect between Pd and Mn 3 O 4 promoted the redistribution of surface charges, thus strengthening the oxidation-reduction ability of the active sites. Moreover, the SMSI effect led to a better migration of surface oxygen species, and boosted the generation of active surface oxygen species. Simultaneously, the Pd catalyst further reduced the energy barrier in the initial stage of the dehydrogenation of propane. Overall, this study provided a novel design strategy for dual active components catalysts with SMSI effect and extended the application of these catalysts in the important field of VOCs elimination.

Ke Zhang,Hui Zeng,Jingyu Feng,Zhengkun Liu,Zhenyu Chu,Wanqin Jin

Allura red (AR) is a member of azo dyes is commonly used as an additive in foods and soft drinks. However, due to the special harm of the azo structure to the human body, the dosage control of AR becomes particularly necessary. The present detection methods are time-consuming, expensive and complicated. In order to address the above issues, a core-shell nanocubes constructed sensor has been developed to determine the ultrawide detection range and selective recognition of AR with a long-term reusability. The core-shell architecture is composed of carbon material of 12.64 nm thickness covering 600 nm Mn 3 O 4 nanocube. This nanocomposite combines the advantages of Mn 3 O 4 @C, possessing high electrocatalysis and chemical stability. As confirmed in using sports drinks as real samples, the as-prepared AR sensor exhibites excellent selectivity with an ultra-wide linear range from 0.1 to 1748.4 μM, and meanwhile, this sensor can also meet the requirements of remarkable anti-interference and reusability over 30 days.

A g-C3N4/Mn3O4/ZIF-8 composite for efficient degradation of dyes by activating peroxymonosulfate

Yangqing Li,Xiaofeng Zhang,Chengke Huang,Haixia Lyu

The photocatalytic degradation of dyes by graphitic carbon nitrides (g-C 3 N 4 ) under sunlight has received increased attention. However, the fast recombination of charge carriers still restricts its photocatalytic application. To overcome this drawback, a g-C 3 N 4 /Mn 3 O 4 /ZIF-8 (CMZ) composite was prepared to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) in water. Under visible light , the catalysts exhibited high activity and stability in activating PMS to generate radicals ( · OH, · O 2 − and SO 4 · - ) and the maximum RhB degradation of approximately 94.34 % was achieved. The RhB degradation followed first‐order kinetics and the rate constant of g-C 3 N 4 /Mn 3 O 4 /ZIF-8/PMS system was 2.85, 3.09, 9.82 and 17 times of g-C 3 N 4 , Mn 3 O 4 , ZIF-8 and PMS, respectively. Moreover, the synergistic effect of CMZ and PMS on the removal efficiencies of total organic carbon (TOC) for RhB and wastewater were 92.84 % and 96.13 %, respectively. After five cycles of use, the degradation rate of the prepared catalyst for RhB only decreased by 1.7 %. This work provided new insights that the synergistic effect of advanced oxidation technologies and photocatalysis holds broad prospects for the photodegradation of RhB.

Selective Liquid-Phase Oxidation of Toluene with Molecular Oxygen Catalyzed by Mn3O4 Nanoparticles Immobilized on CNTs under Solvent-Free Conditions

Yuwei Feng,Aiwu Zeng

The catalytic performance of Mn3O4supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the liquid-phase oxidation of toluene to benzyl alcohol and benzaldehyde was studied. The supported catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N2adsorption–desorption isotherms and ICP-MS. The results demonstrate that Mn3O4nanoparticles loaded on CNTs performed better compared with pristine Mn3O4or CNTs. The main reason for the increased catalytic activity is the dispersion and loading of Mn3O4in CNTs. By optimizing the reaction temperature, reaction time, catalyst quality, oxygen flow rate and initiator dosage, the optimum reaction conditions were obtained. Using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the initiator and oxygen as the oxidant, the toluene conversion rate was as high as 24.63%, and benzyl alcohol and benzaldehyde selectivity was 90.49%. The good stability of the catalyst was confirmed by repeating the experiment for four cycles and observing no significant changes in its performance.

Exploring the rate-control step of toluene oxidation over the novel octahedral Pt/Mn3O4 catalyst with stable low-temperature catalytic performance via in situ DRIFTS

Jie Fan,Lutao Mao,Mingli Fu,Peng Liu,Zuliang Wu,Daiqi Ye

The high efficiency and stability of catalysts are crucial for their practical application in toluene oxidation . Herein, a novel octahedral Pt/Mn 3 O 4 -110 catalyst with excellent structural stability was synthesized and 100 % toluene conversion can be achieved at low-temperature 160 °C. XRD and Raman results indicated that the structure of Pt/Mn 3 O 4 -110 can be well maintained after 120 h on-stream reaction, the resistance to H 2 O (3 or 5 vol%) and high concentration toluene (3000 ppm)/CO 2 (5 vol%) tests. In situ DRIFTS comparative studies between Pt/Mn 3 O 4 -110 and Pt/Mn 3 O 4 -100 (30 % toluene conversion at 160 °C) samples demonstrated that the rate-control steps of toluene oxidation on Pt/Mn 3 O 4 -110 and Pt/Mn 3 O 4 -100 were both the further oxidation of benzoate species in the presence of gas-phase oxygen, while the transformation of benzaldehyde to benzoate species was the rate-control step on Pt/Mn 3 O 4 -100 in the absence of gas-phase oxygen. The weaker Mn-O bonds, richer oxygen vacancies and higher mobility of oxygen species on Pt/Mn 3 O 4 -110 sample than that of Pt/Mn 3 O 4 -100 are beneficial for the easier release of lattice oxygen from the surface of catalyst and then participated in toluene oxidation via Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, contributing to easier oxidation of benzaldehyde to benzoate species and formation of formic acid and bicarbonate species.

Mn3O4 nanozymes as potential therapeutic agents for autism spectrum disorder: insights from behavioral and molecular studies

Minghui Li,Song Wang,Lingling Chang,Ruiting Chen,Yuhang Liu,Zhengjie Ye,Yuhang Zhao,YiFan Ma,Jing Yang,Xinyu Gan,Yongzhi Zhuang,Peng Wang

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder of uncertain etiology. Current studies suggest that ASD progression is closely linked to an imbalance between oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity, marked by elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced concentrations of antioxidant molecules such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH). Although the human body does possess endogenous ROS-scavenging enzymes, their sensitivity to environmental conditions and the difficulties of large-scale production limit their practical application. Consequently, substantial efforts have been dedicated in recent years to developing artificial enzymes with ROS-scavenging activity. Among these, ROS-scavenging nanozymes have been widely used due to their enhanced stability and multifunctionality. Notably, only a few manganese-containing nanozymes have been reported to exhibit effective reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity thus far. Methods: In this study, we utilized Mn3O4 nanozymes (Mn3O4 NZs) exhibiting superoxide dismutase, catalase, and hydroxyl radical–scavenging activities. We assessed brain injury, as well as the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of Mn3O4 NZs through behavioral tests, Nissl staining, immunofluorescence assays, and a laser speckle imaging system. Furthermore, we explored the underlying mechanisms of Mn3O4 NZs by employing ELISA kits, oxidative stress detection kits, and immunofluorescence analysis. Results: The results demonstrated that Mn3O4 NZs increase cerebral blood flow and effectively ameliorate ischemic and hypoxic conditions in BTBR mice. Moreover, they improve social deficits, repetitive stereotyped behaviors, cognitive impairment, and neuronal morphological damage. Further in vitro experiments confirmed that Mn3O4 NZs exert neuroprotective effects in BTBR mice by mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation. Conclusion: These findings indicate that Mn3O4 NZs exhibit excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and effectively enhance cerebral blood flow, ameliorate behavioral deficits, and alleviate neuronal damage in BTBR mice in vivo. Collectively, our results suggest that Mn3O4 NZs exert neuroprotective effects in the hippocampus of BTBR mice by reducing oxidative stress, mitigating neuroinflammation, and rescuing neuronal injury. Consequently, they hold promise as a potential nanomaterial for the treatment of autism.

Metal−organic frameworks-derived MnO2/Mn3O4 microcuboids with hierarchically ordered nanosheets and Ti3C2 MXene/Au NPs composites for electrochemical pesticide detection

Dandan Song,Xinyu Jiang,Yanshan Li,Xiong Lu,Sunrui Luan,Yuanzhe Wang,Yan Li,Faming Gao

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) derived from metal − organic frameworks (MOF) combined with two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides possibly pave an innovative pathway for designing promising biosensors. Herein, a novel electrochemical sensing platform has been fabricated for ultra-sensitive determination of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), based on MOF-derived MnO 2 /Mn 3 O 4 and Ti 3 C 2 MXene/Au NPs composites. Remarkably, the three-dimensional (3D) MnO 2 /Mn 3 O 4 hierarchical microcuboids derived from Mn-MOF are composed of vertically aligned, highly ordered nanosheets, and further combined with MXene/Au NPs yields synergistic signal amplification effect, with outstanding electrochemical performance, large specific surface area, and good environmental biocompatibility. Under the optimum conditions, the reported sensing platform AChE-Chit/MXene/Au NPs/MnO 2 /Mn 3 O 4 /GCE can be utilized to detect methamidophos in a broad concentration range (10 −12 –10 −6 M), together with a good linearity (R = 0.995). Besides that, the biosensor possesses a low limit of detection (1.34 × 10 −13 M), which far exceeds the maximum residue limits (MRLs) for methamidophos (0.01 mg/kg) established by European Union. Additionally, the feasibility of the proposed biosensor for detecting methamidophos in real samples has been demonstrated with excellent recoveries (95.2%–101.3%). Interestingly, the unique structures and remarkable properties of these composites make them attractive materials for various electrochemical sensors for monitoring either pesticide residuals or other environmentally deleterious chemicals.

Synthesis of Mn3O4/CeO2 Hybrid Nanotubes and Their Spontaneous Formation of a Paper-like, Free-Standing Membrane for the Removal of Arsenite from Water

Song Guo,Wuzhu Sun,Weiyi Yang,Zhengchao Xu,Qi Li,Jian Ku Shang

One-dimensional nanomaterials may organize into macrostructures to have hierarchically porous structures, which could not only be easily adopted into various water treatment apparatus to solve the separation issue of nanomaterials from water but also take full advantage of their nanosize effect for enhanced water treatment performance. In this work, a novel template-based process was developed to create Mn3O4/CeO2 hybrid nanotubes, in which a redox reaction happened between the OMS-2 nanowire template and Ce(NO3)3 to create hybrid nanotubes without the template removal process. Both the Ce/Mn ratio and the precipitation agent were found to be critical in the formation of Mn3O4/CeO2 hybrid nanotubes. Because of their relatively large specific surface area, porous structure, high pore volume, and proper surface properties, these Mn3O4/CeO2 hybrid nanotubes demonstrated good As(III) removal performances in water. These Mn3O4/CeO2 hybrid nanotubes could form paper-like, free-standing membranes spontaneously by a self-assembly process without high temperature treatment, which kept the preferable properties of Mn3O4/CeO2 hybrid nanotubes while avoiding the potential nanomaterial dispersion problem. Thus, they could be readily utilized in commonly used flow-through reactors for water treatment purposes. This approach could be further applied to other material systems to create various hybrid nanotubes for a broad range of technical applications.

Mn3O4@PDA nanozyme with high-efficiency enzyme-like activity and good biocompatibility reduce oxidative stress and inflammation to alleviate osteoarthritis

Yuquan Li,Qiumiao Chen,Dandan Han,Feng Hu,Jianping Wu,Junxu Yang,Zhongjie Pan,Wei Liu,Hao Yang,Qingjun Wei

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are closely associated with the initiation and progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Scavenging ROS within inflamed chondrocytes represents an effective strategy to treat OA. In this study, mimicking natural Mn-SOD, we successfully constructed a nanozyme with Mn 3 O 4 as the core and polydopamine (PDA) as the outer modification. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations combined with Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) detection revealed that the nanozyme demonstrates high enzyme-like activity. Furthermore, cytotoxicity assays confirmed its excellent biocompatibility. Within inflamed chondrocytes, Mn 3 O 4 @PDA nanozyme had been demonstrated to regulate the oxidative stress microenvironment, thereby inhibiting inflammatory responses. Moreover, injecting Mn 3 O 4 @PDA into the joints of rats with osteoarthritis could effectively alleviate the inflammatory response and relieve the degeneration of articular cartilage, reducing the OARSCI score by 85.25% at 8 weeks. Therefore, this study demonstrated that Mn 3 O 4 @PDA with high enzyme-like activity and good biocompatibility could efficiently scavenge ROS, reduce inflammatory responses, and promote cartilage regeneration, thereby achieving the treatment of OA.

Ultrasmall Mn3O4 nanocrystalline@three-dimensional macroporous honeycomb-like hollow carbon matrix for high-rate and long-lifetime zinc-ion storage

S.Y. Zhu,Y.F. Yuan,P.F. Du,C.L. Mo,G.C. Cai,B.X. Wang,S.Y. Guo

Low specific capacity and poor cycling performance are two main problems of Mn-based oxides that hinder their application in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Herein, we design a facile sacrificial template method to construct a unique three-dimensional macroporous honeycomb-like hollow carbon matrix, and then grow ultrasmall Mn 3 O 4 nanocrystalline with the diameter of 5 nm inside the hollow carbon matrix. The composite has large surface area (56.9 m 2 g −1 ) and high Mn 3 O 4 content (about 47.1%). When the composite is used as the cathode material of ZIBs, it exhibits extraordinary discharge capacity of 845 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 , impressive rate capability with average discharge capacity of 46 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 , and superior long-term cycling performance with discharge capacity of 123 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 after 800 cycles. Electrochemical kinetics measurements and ex-situ XRD, SEM and TEM further demonstrate that the macroporous honeycomb-like hollow carbon matrix significantly increases electronic conductivity and structural stability of Mn 3 O 4 . Besides, electrochemical activity and surface capacitive effect of Mn 3 O 4 are also greatly enhanced by its ultrasmall size.

Three in one: A multifunctional oxidase-mimicking ag/Mn3O4 nanozyme for colorimetric determination, precise identification, and broad-spectrum inactivation of foodborne pathogenic bacteria

Xuechao Xu,Juanli Yang,Guijie Hao,Bo Wang,Tong Ma,Suping Zhu,Lu Gao,Zhen-quan Yang

A multifunctional oxidase-mimicking Ag/Mn 3 O 4 was prepared, catalyzing the 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) chromogenic reaction. Six foodborne pathogenic bacteria species, including Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , Salmonella enterica , Listeria monocytogenes , Bacillus cereus , and Cronobacter sakazakii , were observed to differentially inhibit its oxidase-like activity, resulting in decelerating the TMB chromogenic reaction. Owing to these properties, the following achievements were achieved: colorimetric determination of these bacteria with high sensitivity can be achieved using Ag/Mn 3 O 4  + TMB reaction system; precise identification of these bacteria at different concentrations, including individual bacterium, binary mixtures, and even multivariate mixtures, can be effectively realized by combining the Ag/Mn 3 O 4 -based colorimetric sensor array with principal component analysis (PCA); broad-spectrum inactivation of these bacteria can be remarkably realized through catalyzation of Ag/Mn 3 O 4 to generate superoxide anion free radicals. Therefore, our proposed Ag/Mn 3 O 4 holds significant application potential in the colorimetric determination, precise identification, and broad-spectrum inactivation of foodborne pathogenic bacteria.
