Highly Salt-tolerant hydrogen evolution reaction based on dendritic urchin-like MoC/MoS2 heterojunction in seawater

Wenpeng Wu,Xinqun Zhang,Yukun Xiao,Zhihua Cheng,Tian Yang,Jinsheng Lv,Man Yuan,Jiajia Liu,Yang Zhao

The direct electrolysis of abundant near-neutral seawater resources for hydrogen production faces significant challenges due to insufficient catalyst activity and salt toxicity. Herein, we demonstrate a novel dendritic urchin-like MoC/MoS 2 heterojunction in-situ formed on carbon cloth (CC@MoC/MoS 2 -H) through a combination of hydrothermal and high-temperature annealing processes. This unique dendritic urchin-like structure consists of numerous nanorods on carbon cloth, which enhances the catalytic active sites and provides space for efficient bubble release. The resulting CC@MoC/MoS 2 -H exhibits superior catalytic performance, with an overpotential of 91 mV and 136 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in the 1 M PBS electrolyte and natural seawater, respectively, surpassesing that of most non-noble metal compounds reported previously. Finite element simulations reveal that the urchin-like structure has significantly higher bubble release capacity compared to the randomly stacked structure. Additionally, the urchin-like structure demonstrates substantially greater current density retention under electrolytic conditions designed to simulate salt accumulation, in comparison to the small-size structure. Furthermore, the average H 2 production efficiency of 78,493 μmol h −1 g −1 was evaluated for three consecutive hours using commercial solar panels rated at 2 V on a large-scale electrode assembly from seawater, which is comparable to the present photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency. This work opens new avenues for the development of catalytic structures compatible with seawater.

A novel electrochemical sensing platform based on double-active-center polyimide covalent organic frameworks for sensitive analysis of levofloxacin

Lu Zongyan,Guo Hao,Wang Mingyue,Yang Zeyun,Wei Xiaoqin,Liu Yinsheng,Hui Yingfei,Yu Zhiguo,Yang Wu

The development of a simple and sensitive electrochemical sensing platform for levofloxacin (LVF) analysis is of great significance to human health. In this work, a covalent organic framework (TP-COF) was in situ grown on the surface of Sn-MoC nanospheres with nanoflower-like morphology through a one-pot method to obtain the TP-COF@Sn-MoC composite. The prepared composite was used to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to realize the sensitive detection of levofloxacin. TP-COF was formed by polycondensation of 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TAPT) and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), in which C = O and C = N groups served as double active centers for the recognition and electrocatalytic oxidation of the target molecule. Meanwhile, the introduction of Sn-MoC improved the conductivity of the electrode. The TP-COF@Sn-MoC composite produced a strong synergistic effect and showed a high electrocatalytic ability toward levofloxacin oxidation. The linear range of LVF was 0.6–1000 μM and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.029 μM ( S / N  = 3). In addition, the sensor has been successfully applied for the analysis of LVF in human urine and blood serum samples with acceptable recovery rates, demonstrating that the sensor was promising in practical applications. Constructing bifunctional Co/MoC@N-C catalyst via an in-situ encapsulation strategy for efficient oxygen electrocatalysis

Hui Huang,Lingjun Kong,Ming Liu,Jie He,Wei Shuang,Yunhua Xu,Xian-He Bu

The large-scale application of Zn-air battery requires the development of efficient, low-cost, and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, an electrocatalyst of a Co/MoC-nanoparticles embedded N-doped carbon (Co/MoC@N-C) was prepared via the in-situ encapsulation of Co 2 (CO) 8 and Mo(CO) 6 in ZIF-8 using ball-milling, followed by pyrolysis under an Ar atmosphere. When used as a bifunctional electrocatalyst, the as-prepared Co/MoC@N-C showed an ORR half-wave potential of 0.824 V in an alkaline medium and an overpotential of only 290 mV for the OER at 10 mA cm − 2 , which was 70 mV lower than RuO 2 . The Co/MoC@N-C was also evaluated as a cathode in a solid-state Zn-air battery and delivered a higher peak discharge power density and better cycling stability (over 1600 min) than Pt/C-RuO 2 . Most importantly, our work provides a new strategy to prepare bifunctional catalysts and promotes their applications in the energy conversion field.

Synergistic Urea Oxidation and Hydrogen Evolution over MoC/Co/NCNT-Based Electrocatalysts for Cost-Effective Alkaline Electrolysis

Can Liu,Xu Cao,Lu Chen,Qian Wang,Baohua Zhang,Caihong Liang,Yeng Ming Lam,Liang Wang

To facilitate scalable hydrogen production via water splitting, it is highly desirable to develop efficient electrocatalysts to ameliorate the sluggish kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we report the rational design of a multicomponent electrocatalyst comprising molybdenum carbide nanoflakes and metallic cobalt encapsulated within nitrogen-rich carbon nanotubes (MoC/Co/NCNT) supported on nickel foam. The obtained MoC/Co/NCNT shows an exceptionally low overpotential of 33 mV at 10 mA cm–2 for alkaline HER, attributed to the synergistic interactions among MoC, Co, and NCNT. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate this structure can reduce alkaline HER energy barriers. Further integration with NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) imparts pronounced bifunctionality, enabling not only efficient OER but also thermodynamically favorable urea oxidation reaction (UOR), as confirmed by DFT results. Configured as a urea-assisted electrolyzer with MoC/Co/NCNT as the cathode and MoC/Co/NCNT@LDH as the anode, the system achieves 100 mA cm–2 at a cell voltage of just 1.46 V, which is 220 mV lower than that of traditional water electrolysis and surpasses many previously reported urea electrolyzers. This work provides a promising strategy for energy-efficient and cost-effective hydrogen production in alkaline media through integrated HER and UOR electrocatalysis.

Nitrogen-rich carbon-supported ultrafine MoC nanoparticles for the hydrotreatment of oleic acid into diesel-like hydrocarbons

Fei Wang,Wenjuan Zhang,Jianchun Jiang,Junming Xu,Qiaolong Zhai,Linshan Wei,Feng Long,Chao Liu,Peng Liu,Weihong Tan,Daheng He

The hydrotreatment of lipids is regarded as a renewable and promising approach to produce green diesel to confront environmental issues. The molybdenum carbide catalyst displays noble metal-like activity for lipid hydrotreatment; however, the active sites on the catalyst typically have a large particle size and are unevenly dispersed, thereby severely limiting its catalytic performance. Herein, ultrafine MoC nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-rich carbon (MoC/CN) were prepared, and their activity for the hydrotreatment of oleic acid was compared with that of Mo 2 C supported on mesoporous carbon (Mo 2 C/MC). In the hydrotreatment test, the MoC/CN catalyst exhibited remarkable activity with 94.3% conversion and 90.3% selectivity at 310 °C; these values were much higher than those of the Mo 2 C/MC catalyst (84.8% and 70.1%, respectively), even at 350 °C. The excellent performance of MoC/CN is ascribed to the sufficient amounts of pyridinic N and pyrrolic N in nitrogen-rich carbon, which provide anchoring sites for the molybdenum precursor, leading to the fine particle sizes of the active sites and a uniform dispersion. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that MoC/CN can better facilitate the dissociative adsorption of hydrogen than Mo 2 C/MC, which explains the high activity of the Mo 2 C/MC catalyst in the hydrotreatment reaction. The carburization temperature and Mo loading content have a considerable effect on the MoC formation and surface area of the MoC/CN catalyst and thus greatly influence the catalytic activity. Moreover, the hydrotreatment conditions, including the reaction temperature and hydrogen pressure, were also investigated.

Anion-exchange strategy boosts iodine adsorption in amorphous metal-organic cage-based extended networks

Tian-Tian Li,Pei Lai,Sheng-Run Zheng

The covalent linking of metal organic cages (MOCs) is an efficient strategy for constructing MOC-based extended networks, but relatively few studies have focused on this topic. In addition, the application of MOC-based extended networks for iodine adsorption is limited. Herein, a cationic MOC-extended amorphous network, namely, aMOC-BTH-NO 3 - , was constructed by hydrazone-linked an aldehyde-functionalized cationic Pd 12 L 24 (L = 3,5-di-pyridin-4-yl-benzaldehyde) MOC with benzene-1,3,5-tricarbohydrazide (BTH). The anions in this cationic network are easy to exchange. By exchanging with other anions with different shapes and charges, including Br - 、SCN - 、SO 4 2- , and PO 4 3- , four other MOC-based extended networks with different anions, namely, aMOC-BTH-Br - , aMOC-BTH-SCN - , aMOC-BTH-SO 4 2- and aMOC-BTH-PO 4 3- , were obtained. Furthermore, they were applied to capture iodine vapor. The results revealed that the SCN - exchanged network, aMOC-BTH-SCN - , presented the highest iodine capacity, reaching 5.7 g/g, which was 2.6 times greater than that of the original aMOC-BTH-NO 3 - . Mechanistic studies revealed that in addition to the charge transfer interactions between iodine and the network, anions also contribute to the iodine adsorption capacity by regulating the cavities and forming additional interactions with iodine molecules. Approximately only 66 % of the absorbed iodine in I 2 @aMOC-BTH-CN - can be desorbed when heated at 120 °C, but it can still capture iodine again with a capacity of 3.8 g/g after four cycles, which is still higher than that of aMOC-BTH-NO 3 - , thus indicating its good reusability.

Interfacial electronic metal-support interaction and hydroxyl spillover synergy in Ru/MoC heterojunctions for accelerated alkaline hydrogen evolution

Jia Sun,Xin Wang,Xiaoli Yang,Yaru Zhang,Junwei Sun,Yue Wang,Haoxi Ben,Wei Jiang,Lixue Zhang

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is hindered by sluggish water dissociation and strong hydroxyl (*OH) poisoning, requiring catalysts that deliver both high activity and long-term stability. Here we design 3% Ru/MoC heterojunctions that operate via a causally coupled interfacial mechanism, in which electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) reshapes the interfacial thermodynamic landscape that governs the feasibility and directionality of hydroxyl spillover. Uniform Ru nanoclusters anchored on MoC nanorods establish EMSI, leading to a downshift of the Ru d-band center and moderated *OH binding. Meanwhile, the MoC support accommodates hydroxyl species and facilitates their spillover away from Ru sites, mitigating surface poisoning. As a result, 3% Ru/MoC delivers an overpotential of 35 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 35 mV dec −1 in 1 M KOH, while retaining nearly unchanged activity over 1800 min. As the cathode in anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWE), it sustains stable hydrogen production for 120 h at current densities up to 500 mA cm −2 at 80 °C. In situ spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) confirm that interfacial thermodynamic modulation correlates with spontaneous hydroxyl spillover and sustained surface regeneration during alkaline HER. This study establishes a quantitative interfacial design principle for spillover-enabled catalysis, linking atomic-scale thermodynamics with device-level durability. 3% Ru/MoC heterojunctions integrate electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) and hydroxyl spillover, enabling interfacial charge redistribution and *OH spillover. EMSI weakens Ru-*OH binding while spillover directs *OH to MoC, preserving active Ru sites. Download: Download high-res image (184KB) Download: Download full-size image

Nanofibrous Cathode Catalysts with MoC Nanoparticles Embedded in N-Rich Carbon Shells for Low-Overpotential Li–CO2 Batteries

Qian-Cheng Zhu,Zi-Rui He,De-Yu Mao,Wan-Ni Lu,Sheng-Long Yi,Kai-Xue Wang

Li–CO2 batteries with high theoretical energy densities are recognized as next-generation energy storage devices for addressing the range anxiety and environmental issues encountered in the field of electric transportation. However, cathode catalysts with unsatisfactory activity toward CO2 absorption and reduction/evolution reactions hinder the development of Li–CO2 batteries with desired specific capacities and sufficient cycle numbers. In this work, a multifunctional nanofibrous cathode catalyst that integrates N-rich carbon shells embedded with molybdenum carbide nanoparticles and multiwalled carbon nanotube cores was designed and prepared. The N-rich carbon shell could strengthen the absorption capacity of CO2 and Li2CO3. The molybdenum carbide nanoparticles would improve the catalytic activity of both CO2 reduction and evolution reactions. The carbon nanotube cores would provide an efficient network for electron transportation. The synergistic effect of the cathode catalysts enhances the electrochemical performance of Li–CO2 batteries. A high cycling stability of more than 150 cycles at a current density of 250 mA g–1 with a cutoff capacity of 1000 mAh g–1 and a charge/discharge overpotential of less than 1.5 V is achieved. This work provides a feasible strategy for the design of a high-performance cathode catalyst for lithium–air batteries.

Hui Luo,Sihai Lv,Guizhen Liu,Yongzhi Cheng,Xujin Ge,Xian Wang,Rongzhou Gong,Fu Chen

Developing high-performance microwave absorbing materials is still a challenge to address the electromagnetic pollution . Interfacial engineering to heighten interfacial polarization plays a key role in microwave absorption. In this work, Multiple interfacial magnetic carbon nanotubes encapsulated hydrangea-like NiMo/MoC/N-doped carbon were prepared via carbothermic reduction . The phase structure and electromagnetic properties can be regulated by thermal treatment temperature. Dielectric loss mechanisms were analyzed deeply by Debye relaxation theory. The results indicated the composites exhibit excellent microwave absorption properties . Reflection loss (RL) less than −20 dB can be achieved in the frequency range of 3.76–17.52 GHz with the absorber thickness varied from 1.3 mm to 5.0 mm when the thermal treatment temperature was 700 °C. The strongest RL value reach to −70.1 dB at 14.2 GHz with the absorber thickness of only 1.52 mm when the thermal treatment temperature is 800 °C. The radar cross section (RCS) reduction calculated through computer simulation technology is used to analyze the microwave absorption capability in the actual far field. The RCS reduction is 17.05 dBm 2 when the scattering angle is 0°. This work provided a novel approach for realizing the multi-interface absorbers for high-performance microwave absorption.

Electron-distribution control via Pt/NC and MoC/NC dual junction: Boosted hydrogen electro-oxidation and theoretical study

Feng Zhou,Xiaofeng Ke,Yihuang Chen,Mei Zhao,Yun Yang,Youqing Dong,Chao Zou,Xi'an Chen,Huile Jin,Lijie Zhang,Shun Wang

The scarcity, high cost and susceptibility to CO of Platinum severely restrict its application in alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). Hybridizing Pt with other transition metals provides an effective strategy to modulate its catalytic HOR performance, but at the cost of mass activity due to the coverage of modifiers on Pt surface. Herein, we constructed dual junctions’ Pt/nitrogen-doped carbon (Pt/NC) and δ-MoC/NC to modify electronic structure of Pt via interfacial electron transfer to acquire Pt-MoC@NC catalyst with electron-deficient Pt nanoparticles, simultaneously endowing it with high mass activity and durability of alkaline HOR. Moreover, the unique structure of Pt-MoC@NC endows Pt with a high CO-tolerance at 1,000 ppm CO/H 2 , a quality that commercial Pt-C catalyst lacks. The theoretical calculations not only confirm the diffusion of electrons from Pt/NC to MoC/NC could occur, but also demonstrate the negative shift of Pt d -band center for the optimized binding energies of *H, *OH and CO.

Self-supported porous wood carbon electrode with a MoC/carbon nanocage composite for application in a high-performance supercapacitor

Mengyao Li,Lixin Wang,Wanning Xiong,Linlin Zhao,Yi Tian,Mengting Cheng,Yuzhu Wang,Zejun Li,Xinjun Wang,Qingquan Sheng,Yongfeng Luo

The rational design and synthesis of carbon nanocages with highly complex porous structures are continuously facing challenges in the development of high-performance supercapacitors (SCs). The electrochemical performance characteristics of electrodes rely on their compositions and fabrication methods. Here, we propose a universal and efficient approach for the in-situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) on porous carbonized wood, where the selective utilization of hexacarbonyl molybdenum protects the structural integrity of the ZIF-8 precursor, preventing collapse during thermal treatment. The subsequent pyrolysis process leads to the formation of small-sized molybdenum carbide (MoC) which are embedded in carbon nanocages (CN). The composite electrode consists of MoC/CN embedded in a porous carbonized wood (PCW), and it shows area-specific capacity of 9.7F cm −2 and 9.4 F cm −2 at 5 mA cm −2 and 30 mA cm −2 , respectively. Subsequently, the symmetric supercapacitor , with two MoC/CN@PCW electrodes exhibits a areal specific capacitance of 2.7 F cm −2 at 5 mA cm −2 . Moreover, this supercapacitor maintains an capacitance retention rate of 98.5 % after 12,000 discharge cycles. The supercapacitor exhibits a power density of 6.5 mW cm −2 , resulting in an energy density of 0.864 mWh cm −2 . Therefore, the utilization of wood-based electrodes holds promise for energy storage systems.

Mutual promotion by structural design and intrinsic activity coupling of CNTs/MoC/CoNiMo for water splitting and urea electrolysis

Xuesong Liu,Kuan Deng,Peng Liu,Xingbin Lv,Wen Tian,Kui Ma,Hongjiao Li,Junyi Ji

Construction of durable multi-function electrocatalysts for hydrogen production is still highly challenging. Herein, we report a hierarchical integrated tri-functional heterogeneous CNTs/MoC/CoNiMo electrode for HER and related OER/UOR. The carbon-protected Ni nanoparticles yield abundant γ-NiOOH active intermediates to boost OER/UOR, while DFT calculations verify Mo migration induced by MoC and CoNiMo alloy under negative potentials generates HER super-active sites on Mo-rich surfaces. Additionally, the parallel aligned nanosheets with out-plane extended CNTs arrays can guide the rapid bubbles release and expand the accessible surface area. Therefore, the optimized CNT/MoC/NMC-3 electrode can achieve overpotentials of 51 mV (HER) and 226 mV (OER), with low potential threshold of 1.257 V (UOR) at 10 mA cm –2 . Moreover, the assembled symmetric urea electrolyzer reaches a 1.291 V cell voltage at 10 mA cm –2 . This work provides a novel strategy for heterostructure multi-component integration for achieving high-efficiency hydrogen production and urea-containing wastewater purification.
