Molybdenum oxides as anode materials have received considerable attention because of their high-theoretical capacities. However, the abrupt volume changes during the charge/discharge process and the poor electrical conductivity lead to rapid capacity decay and poor cycling performance. Molybdenum oxides are anchored on carbon matrix to form composite that can effectively accelerate reaction kinetics and slow down capacity decay. Biomass-based carbon is a promising matrix, due to inexpensive, environment-friendly and abundant. In this study, the thin-flake MoO x was successfully anchored on the N-doped pinecone-derived carbon (NPC) by using a single-step hydrothermal method . When used as a potassium ion battery anode for the first time, the reversible capacity of optimised MoO x /NPC (210.4 mAh·g −1 ) was higher than that of pure MoO 2 (122.7 mAh·g −1 ) at 100 mA g −1 . Even when cycled at 500 mA g −1 , optimised MoO x /NPC exhibited a high capacity of 147.2 mAh·g −1 after 500 cycles. Moreover, the potassium ions storage mechanism was analyzed in detail. This finding demonstrates MoO x /NPC as a potential electrode for the development of high-performance PIBs, and provides a new strategy to reduce environmental pollution caused by treating pinecone and increase its additional value.

Ammonia is emerging as a promising carbon-free energy carrier. The electrocatalytic ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR), highly structure-sensitive, exhibits exceptional activity on Pt nanocubes (NCs) with (100) facets. Yet, synthesis methods employing metal carbonyl capping agents inevitably introduce residual metals, whose catalytic effects are often neglected. Here, Pt NCs synthesized with Mo(CO) 6 were found to contain trace Mo both in the bulk and at the surface. Surface Mo species, partially oxidized to MoO x , substantially modify the electronic structure of Pt(100), lowering activation barriers for rate-determining AOR steps and enhancing resistance to nitrogen poisoning. These effects collectively boost AOR performance, enabling a direct ammonia fuel cell with a Pt-154 anode to achieve a peak power density of 26.7 mW cm −2 . These results reveal the overlooked impact of capping-agent-derived contaminants in AOR and point to the deliberate incorporation of heterometallic modifiers as a viable strategy for advanced electrocatalyst design.

Near-infrared light-induced catalysts are considered to be potential nanoagents for tumor therapy. Cerium (Ce) is a non-biotoxic lanthanide element and exhibits variable valence states for catalytic reactions. In this work, we report a one-step hydrothermal synthesis for Ce-doped MoOx (CMO) nanomaterials. The obtained CMO nanomaterials show high absorption in the NIR II regime and a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 67.7% (1064 nm). Moreover, due to the doping of Ce element, the consumption of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glutathione (GSH) is boosted which enhances the chemodynamic and photodynamic therapy simultaneously. Under NIR II laser irradiation, the designed CMO nanocatalysts induce metabolism disruption and mitochondrial damage in the tumor cells. As-prepared CMO nanomaterials also show good biocompatibility and pH-responsive degradation behavior, which can be degraded rapidly under alkaline conditions (pH = 7.4) and remain stable in acidic solution (pH = 5.6). These properties make CMO nanomaterials ideal biodegradable nanotheranostic agents for synergistic chemodynamic–photodynamic–photothermal antitumor therapy.

To obtain low-sulfur fuel and reduce SO X emissions, we are developing a MoO X /C hollow sphere catalyst with adjustable oxygen vacancies for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of fuel. Herein, porous MoO X /C hollow spheres with nanosheet structure were synthesized by pyrolysis of polydopamine-molybdic (PDA-Mo) precursors. The limiting effect of the carbon layer caused MoO X to be uniformly embedded in the carbon support. Then partial oxidization led to forming more meso-/micro-pores and a larger specific surface area (406.4 m 2 g −1 ), and to obtain crystal and abundant oxygen vacancies, thus increasing the content of effective active sites and enhanced the activity of the composite catalyst. Accordingly, the MoO X /C catalysts were employed in oxidative desulfurization (ODS) with H 2 O 2 as an oxidant and displayed excellent performance. The dibenzothiophene (DBT) was eliminated 100% on the optimal catalyst MoO X /C-750–4 within 15 min at 60 ℃ and had a high turnover frequency (22.6 h −1 ). Furthermore, in-situ formation of C encompassing MoO X could reduce active site leaching and maintain good reaction stability. After eight recycles, the removal rate of DBT was still 98.6%. This study provides a universal in-situ pyrolysis strategy for constructing supported metal oxides and designing high-capacity ODS catalysts.

Tannic acid (TA), a common polyphenol in food and beverages, is challenging to detect rapidly on-site due to limitations of conventional methods. Here, we present a colorimetric sensor based on oxygen-vacancy-rich molybdenum oxide nanosheets (MoOx, 2 < x < 3) for rapid, selective, and multi-color visualization of TA. The sensor exploits coordination between TA and Mo sites on MoOx, modulating localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and shifting light-absorption of the MoOx-TA complex. UV-induced oxygen vacancies enhance the optical response, enabling fast color change from blue to green to yellow within seconds. Under optimized conditions, the sensor achieves a low detection limit of 0.31 μM and a linear range of 10–700 μM. With high selectivity against common interferents and antioxidants, and coupled with classification algorithms, it enables accurate TA determination in real samples. This work provides a robust, enzyme-free, cost-effective strategy for TA detection and a versatile tool for food quality control and on-site analysis.

Molybdenum trioxide (MoO 3-X , X < 3) stands out as a highly effective hole-selective layer for crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells, owing to its high work function ( W F ), high optical transmittance, and easy preparation. However, it is very prone to generating oxygen vacancies ( V O ) under external stimulus (air, heat) or contacting the neighbor layers in the devices, which dramatically decrease the W F , leading to the significant reduction of hole selectivity and instability of the solar cells. In this work, multivalent MoO X (Mo 4+ , Mo 5+ , Mo 6+ ) is proposed as hole selective layer by fine controlling the oxidation duration of the precursor solution. The Mo 4+ ions in the film are eliminated and V O are reduced by the introduction of Al 3+ or Nb 5+ doping, contributing to the reduction of contact resistivity of MoO X /p-Si heterojunction from 120.7 to 29.6 or 26.4 mΩ cm 2 . Simultaneously, the recombination current density is decreased from 232 to 110 or 106 fA/cm 2 with Al 3+ or Nb 5+ doping. The MoO X :Nb 5+ /p-Si heterojunction solar cell has achieved a champion conversion efficiency of 20.22%, moreover, it shows much more stable than the MoO 3-X /p-Si heterojunction device. This work provides a feasible strategy of designing hole selective layers for highly efficient and stable c-Si solar cells.

A synergistic effect normally exists in bimetallic catalysts, which can greatly improve the catalytic performance in comparison with monometallic catalysts. However, the N-doped carbon-supported bimetallic catalysts, especially for noble-based bimetallic catalysts prepared by one-pot pyrolysis at high temperatures are scarcely reported. Herein, a novel sustainable Ru–MoOx bimetallic catalyst was successfully prepared by one-pot pyrolysis of biowaste (chitin) and metal salts, which exhibited great improvement in catalytic activity and could be stable up to 5 cycles for the direct hydrogenation of furfural (FAL) to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA). On the basis of series of catalyst characterizations, it was found that there was a strong interaction between Ru and MoOx particles, behaving as the main contributor to the enhanced catalytic performance.

Hydrazine borane (HB, N 2 H 4 BH 3 ) is gaining attention as a promising chemical hydrogen storage material due to its impressive hydrogen capacity (15.4 wt%) and stability under normal conditions. However, its dehydrogenation properties have remained unsatisfactory despite numerous efforts. In this study, we have successfully developed rhodium-ruthenium nanoparticles modified with MoO x and supported on carbon nanotubes (Rh 0.7 Ru 0.3 -MoO x /CNTS) using a facile co-reduction method. Surprisingly, the Rh 0.7 Ru 0.3 -MoO x /CNTS catalyst exhibits outstanding performance, surpassing all previously reported activities for HB dehydrogenation. It demonstrates a high turnover frequency (TOF) value of 4412 h −1 at 303 K, 100 % selective conversion of hydrogen, and excellent stability. Through XPS , TEM , BET, and XRD analysis , we have determined that the exceptional performance of Rh 0.7 Ru 0.3 -MoO x /CNTS can be attributed to the synergistic effect of CNTS and MoO x on the catalyst's electronic structure, crystal structure, and particle size. These results provide a solid foundation for the potential application of HB in hydrogen fuel cells.

Molybdenum oxides are widely used as electrocatalysts due to their polymetallic oxidation state, abundant reactive sites and low production cost. However, the low electrical conductivity and easy agglomeration has limited their practical application. Here, MoO 3 nanowires encapsulated with ZIF-67 polyhedra were grown in situ on expanded graphite paper (EGP) by a simple hydrothermal synthesis method, and then the precursors were pyrolyzed to obtain self-supported Co-MoO x @N-doped carbon/EGP composites. Thanks to the three-dimensional porous structure and the synergistic effect of Co and multi-valance MoO x , the as-prepared Co-MoO x @N-doped carbon/EGP exhibits the excellent performances of OER (η 10 = 256 mV) and HER (η 10 = 138 mV), and a small Tafel slope and good durability. Furthermore, the assembled water splitting device achieved a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a low voltage of 1.62 V and the excellent stability after 24 h continuous water splitting.

Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) have attracted significant attention due to their high energy density and low cost. However, further progress in this technology is severely hindered by the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the sluggish redox kinetics of sulfur cathodes. To overcome these challenges, the application of nanocatalysts into the separators of LSBs boosts the LiPS conversion efficiency. In this study, MoOx (2 < x < 3) submicrometer rods with different oxidation levels are fabricated through precise temperature and atmosphere process parameters. The results show that the composite crystal structure material combines the high electrical conductivity of MoO2 with the high catalytic activity of MoO3, and when used to modify the polypropylene separator, it exhibits catalytic activity for the sulfur reduction reaction and the sulfur evolution reaction. The LSBs deliver a discharge specific capacity of 632.8 mAh g–1 at 8 C and maintain stable cycling for 700 cycles at 1 C, with 0.056% capacity decay per cycle. This study provides a pathway for the preparation of bifunctional catalysis with an integrated structure for LSBs.

Supported Au catalysts are widely investigated for selective oxidation processes. Here, propylene oxidation was studied over Au nanoparticles supported on MoO 3 nanobelts. Intriguingly, the Au particles were encapsulated by MoO x layers in oxidizing atmospheres yielding Au@MoO x aggregates which signal non-classical oxidative strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Au and MoO 3 . The core@shell particles enhanced the acrolein selectivity of MoO 3 from 18 % up to 81 % while its formation rate accelerated more than twentyfold to 1153 µmol g cat −1 h −1 at 3 wt% Au loading and 350 °C. In situ CO DRIFTS measurements, H 2 -TPR and XPS analyses suggest that the Au@MoO x entities facilitate the transfer of MoO 3 lattice oxygen to propylene in line with the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism for acrolein formation. Apparent activation energies in the 113–163 kJ mol −1 range point to re-oxidation of the ensuing oxygen-deficient MoO x moieties as rate-limiting acrolein formation step. Consequently, the oxidative SMSI strongly promotes propylene conversion to acrolein over MoO 3 -supported Au catalysts.

In this work, quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) based on a low-temperature solution-processed MoOx hole injection layer were fabricated. As a result of the excellent wettability of the MoOx precursor, a smooth sMoOx HIL film with a roughness of less than 1 nm was obtained. In comparison with a device based on PEDOT:PSS, the best sMoOx-based QD-LED displayed comparable device performance in terms of a maximum luminance of 10 225 cd m−2, a peak current efficiency of 4.04 cd A−1, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.61% and, more importantly, an approximately threefold increase in operational lifetime. Furthermore, we investigated the relationship between the thermal treatment of the sMoOx film and the device performance. UPS measurements revealed that the work function of the sMoOx film underwent an upshift from 5.51 to 4.90 eV when the annealing temperature was increased from 50 to 250 °C, which indicated that low-temperature treatment of the sMoOx HIL is beneficial for hole injection and EL performance. This demonstration of a bright, efficient and stable sMoOx-based QD-LED provides another feasible application of solution-processable transition metal oxide materials as the HIL within QD-LEDs and promotes the development of low-cost, all-solution-processed optoelectronic devices.
