Hierarchical MoS2@MoP core–shell heterojunction electrocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction over a broad pH range

Aiping Wu,Chungui Tian,Haijing Yan,Yanqing Jiao,Qing Yan,Guoyu Yang,Honggang Fu

A low-cost catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over a broad pH range is highly desired to meet the practical needs in different areas. In this study, hierarchical flower-like MoS2@MoP core–shell heterojunctions (HF-MoSP) are designed as a promising catalyst for HER over a broad pH range. The materials are obtained by the controllable phosphidation of the hierarchical MoS2 flower (HF-MoS2) composed of thin silk belt-like sheets. The phosphidation degree, P/S ratio and work function (WF) of HF-MoSP can be tuned easily over broad range by changing the phosphidation temperature. Under optimized condition, HF-MoSP exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity for HER with a low onset overpotential of 29 mV and η of 108 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and retains its good activity for 30 h. In addition, the catalyst shows excellent activity in 1 M KOH with an onset overpotential of 42 mV and η of 119 mV at 10 mA cm−2. The catalysts also exhibit obvious activity in neutral, weak acid and weak alkaline conditions. The good performance is relative to the synergy of the MoP shell and MoS2 core and the high WF of HF-MoSP close to Pt, and the large SBET of HF-MoSP benefited from the hierarchical structure. This study represents the construction of the core–shell heterojunction and provides a new way to provide the low-cost and high-performance catalyst for HER.

Poly aromatic hydrocarbon (naphthalene) conversion into value added chemical (tetralin): Activity and stability of MoP/AC catalyst

Muhammad Usman,Dan Li,Rauf Razzaq,Ullah Latif,Oki Muraza,Zain Hassan Yamani,Bassem A. Al-Maythalony,Chunshan Li,Suojiang Zhang

The numerous environmental challenges attributed to polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) recently accounted to search for better valorization options especially, naphthalene upgrading into tetralin is a promising catalytic process which is important for the petrochemical industry due to the widespread applicability and global demand. A key challenge in this process is to design highly efficient, low temperature active, selective, stable, yet cost-effective catalyst. Herein, we employed impregnation and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) method and developed an activated carbon (AC) supported molybdenum phosphide (MoP) catalyst. The samples were successfully characterized using XRD , XPX, SEM , TEM , EPMA , TGA/DTA, N 2 adsorption, NH 3 -TPD and pyridine FTIR. The catalysts were evaluated for naphthalene conversion under various operational conditions; 240–360 °C, 4.0 MPa, and 3.0–20/h LHSV. Excellent naphthalene conversion of 82% and 99% selectivity to tetralin was achieved with the 10 wt.% MoP/AC catalyst. This promising low temperature performance could be attributed to the moderate acidity of the catalyst inhibiting hydrocracking; and the large surface area of AC that increased MoP dispersion and associated AC-MoP interactions.

The influence of polyethylene glycol on the synthesis and activity of MoP for the hydrodechlorination of trichloroethylene

Xiaomeng Liu,Lili Ren

Molybdenum phosphide (MoP), synthesized by combining with polyethylene glycol (PEG), shows 4 to 5 times superior activity than conventional MoP for hydrodechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE). We investigated the effect of PEG average molecular mass on the catalytic activity of MoP, and found that when the average molecular mass of PEG was 8000, the MoP catalyst gave the highest activity. Through X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and H2 temperature-program reduction (H2-TPR), the effect of PEG was investigated. The results showed that the addition of PEG changed MoP from the original flat structure to a lamellar structure, and indeed improved the growth of the (101) and (102) crystal planes (the possible crystal planes of high activity) and restrained the (100) and (201) crystal planes (the possible crystal planes of low activity). This leads to the high catalytic performance of MoP modified with PEG.

MoP/Mo2C@C: A New Combination of Electrocatalysts for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution over the Entire pH Range

Lu-Nan Zhang,Si-Heng Li,Hua-Qiao Tan,Shifa Ullah Khan,Yuan-Yuan Ma,Hong-Ying Zang,Yong-Hui Wang,Yang-Guang Li

During the exploration of highly efficient noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), a promising and challenging strategy is to fabricate composite nanocatalysts by finely tuning metal and/or nonmetal element components. Herein, we report a new HER electrocatalyst, which is composed of molybdenum phosphide and molybdenum carbide composite nanoparticles (NPs) coated by few-layer N-doped graphitic carbon shells (denoted as MoP/Mo2C@C). Such a new combination mode of electrocatalysts is realized by a one-step annealing route with the mixture of a Mo/P-based polyoxometalate (POM) and dicyandiamide. On the basis of this method, the simultaneous phosphorization and carbonization in a nanoscale confined space can be easily achieved by the use of POM as the molecular-element-regulating platform. MoP/Mo2C@C exhibits more remarkable HER performance over the whole pH range than those of MoP, Mo2C, and the physical mixture of MoP and Mo2C. The low overpotentials of 89, 136, and 75 mV were obtained at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 in the media of pH = 0, 7, and 14, respectively. Furthermore, MoP/Mo2C@C shows a long-term durability for 14 h over the entire pH range (0–14). Because of the protection of carbon shells, such composite electrocatalyst also possesses better transition-metal tolerance exemplified by Fe2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ than that of 20% commercial Pt/C. This work demonstrates the advantage of POM precursors in adjusting the component and properties of nanoscale composite electrocatalysts for HER, which may suggest new options for the fabrication of highly efficient composite electrocatalysts.

Kai Lan,Xiang Wang,Haidong Yang,Kanwal Iqbal,Yan Zhu,Pengbo Jiang,Yu Tang,Yuanyuan Yang,Wenbin Gao,Rong Li

Graphical Ultrafine and uniform : MoP nanoparticles with an average size of 3.15 nm uniformly embedded in carbon nanosheets derived from glucose as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution are prepared via a novel and simple solid-state reaction. Due to the large number of exposed active sites in the ultrafine MoP nanoparticles and the laminar structure of carbon nanosheets, the material shows remarkable catalytic activity in both, acidic and alkaline media. Electrocatalysis of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a promising route for sustainable hydrogen production based on water splitting. Designing MoP nanoparticles as catalysts is a feasible strategy to enhance the electrocatalytic performance for HER. In response, we report the fabrication of ultrafine MoP nanoparticles (NPs) which are uniformly embedded on glucose-derived phosphorus and nitrogen co-doped carbon nanosheets (MoP/NPG) as an effective electrocatalyst for HER via a novel and simple solid-state reaction. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the resulting product exhibits an average size of 3.15 nm. Due to the presence of exposed active sites in ultrafine MoP NPs and the laminar structure of carbon nanosheets, the MoP/NPS shows remarkable high catalytic activity having a low overpotential of 90 and 115 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in both, acidic and alkaline media, which demonstrates the promising potential for an application in sustainable energy production.

Metal–Organic Frameworks-Derived Porous Yolk–Shell MoP/Cu3P@carbon Microcages as High-Performance Anodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Yanyou Yin,Yu Zhang,Nannan Liu,Lishuang Fan,Naiqing Zhang

Transitional metal phosphides (TMPs) anode materials usually have large volume change and weak diffusion kinetics, leading to poor cycle stability. Combining TMPs with conductive carbon matrix has been widely used to boost sodium storage. However, it still needs to make efforts in the rational and facile design of nano/micro-structural TMPs/carbon hybrid anode material. Herein, a MOFs-derived strategy is developed to synthesize porous yolk–shell MoP/Cu 3 P@carbon microcages (MoP/Cu 3 P@C) through in situ and confined phosphidation reaction as a high-performance sodium-ion batteries anode. This yolk–shell structure can offer adequate internal space to buffer the large volume expansion, shorten diffusion distance, and create more active sites of Na + . Especially, the Cu nanoparticles generated from Cu 3 P have remarkable electronic conductivity of 5.7 × 10 7 S m −1 (the second most conductive metal) to benefit transporting electrons. And the introduction of Mo (MoP has high theoretical capacity of 633 mA h g −1 ) can enhance the reversible capacity of the whole anode material. Therefore, these porous yolk–shell MoP/Cu 3 P@carbon microcages possess excellent reversible capacity of 307.8 mA h g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 and extraordinary cycle stability of 132.1 mA h g −1 at 5.0 A g −1 even after 6000 cycles.

In-situ reducing synthesis of MoP@nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers as an anode material for lithium/sodium-ion batteries

Cuimei Fu,Hao Yang,Guofeng Feng,Lina Wang,Tianxi Liu

Transition metal phosphide anodes have received increasing attention for lithium/sodium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacities and apposite intercalation potential range. However, the mechanical stress induced dramatic volumetric expansion upon a conversion reaction mechanism has hindered the practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate a high performance anode of MoP@nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (MoP@NCNFs), which are prepared from an electrospinning method followed by an in-situ carbothermic self-reduction process. The well-crystallized MoP nanoparticles are uniformly distributed in the interweaving nanofibers, affording a conductive network for fast charge/ion transport and adequate buffer space for volumetric expansion. Benefit from the unique structure, the MoP@NCNFs synthesized at 800 °C delivers a reversible capacity of 840 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 after 200 cycles. At 2 A g −1 , longer cycling upto 1300 cycles is achieved with a capacity of 377 mAh g −1 along with a Coulombic efficiency of 99% for Li storage. And a decent performance is also available for sodium storage. Quantitative kinetics analysis confirms that the charge storage behavior is governed by pseudocapacitance, especially at high rates (75.9% at 1 mV s –1 ), boosting the high-rate lithium/sodium storage performance.

3D-CEUS tracking of injectable chemo-sonodynamic therapy-enabled mop-up of residual renal cell carcinoma after thermal ablation

Cuixian Li,Piao Zhu,Huijing Xiang,Yunjie Jin,Beilei Lu,Yujia Shen,Wenping Wang,Beijian Huang,Yu Chen

Thermal ablation (TA), as a minimally invasive therapeutic technique, has been extensively used to the treatment of solid tumors, such as renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which, unfortunately, still fails to overcome the high risk of local recurrence and distant metastasis since the incomplete ablation cannot be ignored due to various factors such as the indistinguishable tumor margins and limited ablation zone. Herein, we report the injectable thermosensitive hydrogel by confining curcumin (Cur)-loaded hollow mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles ( [email protected] @gel) which can locate in tumor site more than half a month and mop up the residual RCC under ultrasound (US) irradiation after transforming from colloidal sol status to elastic gel matrix at physiological temperature. Based on the US-triggered accelerated diffusion of the model chemotherapy drug with multi-pharmacologic functions, the sustained and controlled release of Cur has been demonstrated in vitro . Significantly, US is employed as an external energy to trigger Cur, as a sonosensitizer also, to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for sonodynamic tumor therapy (SDT) in parallel. Tracking by the three-dimensional contrast-enhanced ultrasound (3D-CEUS) imaging, the typical decreased blood perfusions have been observed since the residual xenograft tumor after incomplete TA were effectively suppressed during the chemo-sonodynamic therapy process. The high in vivo biocompatibility and biodegradability of the multifunctional nanoplatform confined by thermogel provide the potential of their further clinical translation for the solid tumor eradication under the guidance and monitoring of 3D-CEUS.

A multi-hierarchical 3D conductive construction of a MoP/C-rGO hybrid for a HER catalyst and a LIB anode

Xuebin Hou,Zelong Huang,Liu Hu,Qufu Wei,Yi Hu

Construction of molybdenum phosphides (MoP) that are connected to conductive composite materials has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy for improving the activity of MoP, and it is crucial for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, increasing the exposed active sites and simultaneously enhancing the synergistic effect between MoP and the conductive substrate is challenging. Herein, constructing a multi-hierarchical conducting connection based on carbon nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets was proposed. MoP nanoparticles were in situ grown in a carbon matrix to form flower-like MoP/C particles and were well scattered in stable lamellar rGO nanosheets. Benefiting from the conductive network and good dispersion of active sites, the resultant MoP/C-rGO hybrid exhibits efficient HER activity, with Tafel slopes of 69 mV dec−1 and 87 mV dec−1 under acidic and alkaline conditions. Significantly, even when applied as an anode for LIBs, it demonstrates excellent storage performance with a high specific capacity and long-term stability. It displays superior cycle performance of a reversible capacity of 624.6 mA h g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 after 500 cycles. This work provides insight into the construction of multi-hierarchical structures for efficient bifunctional nanostructural electrodes for energy conversion and storage.

Preparation of MoP-based quasi-two-dimensional belt-like composite fibers and its performance modulation for sodium/potassium ion storage

Zhenjiang Liu,Haiyan Zhang,Shangshang Zhang,Shengkai Li,Zhenghui Li

Beyond round nanofibers , electrospinning method is able to fabricate thin fibers with various cross-sectional shapes. In this work, using phosphomolybdic acid to trigger the polymerization reaction of pyrrole with addition of tin salt for the filler of carbon fibers, we prepared quasi-two-dimensional thick belt-like fibers through single spinneret electrospinning. The side-by-side welding nanofiber bundles with dog-bone-shaped cross-section improved the connection between fibers, endowing the fiber films with some flexibility and enabling it to be used as freestanding electrode. Employed as anode for sodium/potassium ion storage, the carbon fiber encapsulated MoP/SnO 2 material exhibited promising electrochemical performance . Controlling the collection process of electrospinning, the electrode mass loading can be increased to 10 mg cm −2 . Combined with surface selenizing modification, the performance of as-prepared MoP/SnO 2 /MoSe 2 was further improved, which exhibited areal capacity about 1.5 mAh cm −2 as anode for sodium/potassium ion storage with mass loading of 8–9 mg cm −2 .

High-efficiency acidic electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution enhanced by encapsulation of heterojunction CoP–MoP nanoparticles in a nitrogen-doped 3D nanocarbon framework

Dawei Zheng,Dekun Xv,Xingrui Lv,Wenbin Cao,Dong Liu

The development of low-cost, high-performance transition metal phosphide electrocatalysts is essential for producing hydrogen from renewable energy sources. Here, we report a N-doped three-dimensional nanocarbon framework encapsulating heterojunction CoP–MoP nanoparticles. Due to the synergistic effect between the bimetals, electron transfer is enhanced at multiple heterogeneous junctions, resulting in highly efficient acid electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Additionally, the introduction of N-doped carbon material not only improves the conductivity of the catalyst, but also effectively prevents the aggregation of transition metal phosphide nanoparticles, thus exposing more active sites. Notably, CoP–MoP/NC demonstrates HER catalytic activity comparable to 20% Pt/C in a 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution. Furthermore, it exhibits a significantly low overpotential and a small Tafel slope, measuring 105.2 mV and 79.7 mV dec −1 , respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . And the catalyst also shows excellent long-term durability, further highlighting its potential as a high-performance HER electrocatalyst.

Distinctive MoS2-MoP nanosheet structures anchored on N-doped porous carbon support as a catalyst to enhance the electrochemical hydrogen production

Yaoxia Yang,Xuqin An,Mi Kang,Fengyao Guo,Lan Zhang,Qingtao Wang,Dongfei Sun,Yuan Liao,Zhiwang Yang,Ziqiang Lei

The construction of excellently performing electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a low-cost and economical strategy is still struggling with an enormous challenge in electrochemical water splitting. In this work, a novel N-doped porous carbon substrate constructed heterojunction electrocatalyst (MoS2-MoP/NC) was fabricated by a simple and facile method. Based on the electronic interaction and synergistic effect between MoS2 and MoP phases, the fabricated MoS2-MoP/NC heterojunction catalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic ability. In addition, the N-doped porous carbon substrate had a good charge/mass-transfer ability, which could effectively facilitate electronic transmission or prevent the aggregation of MoS2-MoP nanosheets and improve the catalytic activity. The heterojunction catalyst significantly improved HER activity with a low overpotential of 83 and 103 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in a 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4 and Tafel slope of 59.38 and 59.20 mV dec−1 for HER, respectively. This work provides a simple, less expensive and efficient approach for constructing high-performance heterojunction catalysts for HER.
