Bauxite residue contains a certain amount of alkali metal ions, among which sodium ions are predominant and have a great impact on its application performance. In this paper, a series of sodium ion adsorbents with different Al contents were prepared based on the structural characteristics of NASICON-type materials to study the effect on sodium ion adsorption and regeneration adsorption performance. The results showed that the adsorbent with 40% Al had the best adsorption rate (95.6%). The adsorbents were characterized by SEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy , TG-DSC, XPS and N 2 adsorption-desorption, and the results showed that the adsorbents had a stable three-dimensional network structure. The adsorption isotherm models, adsorption kinetics and adsorption thermodynamics were discussed. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model and was a spontaneous exothermic reaction . In addition, the adsorption mechanism was also discussed; this mechanism involved the participation of carbon-oxygen bonds and electrostatic interactions during adsorption. Desorption and regeneration experiments demonstrated that the adsorbent had excellent reusability, with an adsorption rate of 88.82% after three cycles. This study effectively solves the problem of sodium ion disposal in waste liquid after bauxite residue dealkalization to a certain extent, alleviating the environmental pollution caused by subsequent waste liquid discharge. Additionally, the later application of sodium ions can "turn trash into treasure". This study not only provides a new route for the separation of sodium ions in bauxite residue but also has great significance both from an environmental perspective and from a resource recovery perspective.

In-doped NZSP solid electrolytes were prepared via a modified solid-state reaction method. • The doping of In induces a monoclinic-to -rhombohedral phase transition. • In doping promotes the growth of grains, resulting in grain boundary reduction. • The Na 3.3 Zr 1.7 In 0.3 Si 2 PO 12 electrolyte shows the highest ionic conductivity of 1.24 mS/cm. NASICON-type Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 (NZSP) solid electrolytes are promising candidates for solid-state sodium-ion batteries (SSSIBs) owing to their high ionic conductivity, and excellent air stability. In this study, Na 3+x Zr 2-x In x Si 2 PO 12 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) solid electrolytes were synthesized using a modified solid-state reaction method, and the effect of the In dopant content on the structure and properties of the NZSP electrolytes was investigated by XRD, SEM, and EIS. The introduction of In induces a monoclinic-to -rhombohedral phase transition. The rhombohedral phase has a large unit cell volume, which provides bigger channels for the conduction of Na ions. Moreover, In doping also promotes the growth of grains within the electrolyte, resulting in grain boundary reduction. The Na 3.3 Zr 1.7 In 0.3 Si 2 PO 12 electrolyte exhibits the highest ionic conductivity of 1.24 mS/cm at 30 °C, the lowest activation energy of 0.345 eV, and a negligible electronic conductivity of 1.81 × 10 −8 S/cm. A Na/Na 3.3 Zr 1.7 In 0.3 Si 2 PO 12 /Na symmetric cell shows an excellent cycling stability. These results demonstrate the good promise of Na 3.3 Zr 1.7 In 0.3 Si 2 PO 12 material as an alternative solid electrolyte for SSSIBs. Significant interest has been directed toward sodium metal batteries owing to their high theoretical specific capacity, low cost, and abundant resources. However, the high reactivity of sodium metal leads to dendrite growth and uncontrolled solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, resulting in safety risks and increased impedance. In this work, a zinc–magnesium codoped Na3.65Zr1.675Zn0.2Mg0.125Si2PO12 (NZZMSPO, SE) solid electrolyte with high Na+ conductivity was synthesized. A facile solution-coating method enabled uniform surface modification, allowing in situ formation of a stable artificial SEI at the solid electrolyte|sodium metal interface. This protective layer effectively stabilizes the interface and markedly enhances cycling stability, elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Sodium symmetric cells with the artificial SEI exhibited lifetimes exceeding 1200 h at 0.3 mA cm–2, attributed to suppressed dendrite growth and regulated SEI formation. Full cells using Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7 cathodes delivered a specific capacity of 78.82 mAh g–1 with 89% capacity retention after 200 cycles, demonstrating the broad potential of this artificial SEI strategy for solid-state sodium-ion batteries.

Sodium (Na) super ion conductor (NASICON) structure Na3MnTi(PO4)3 (NMTP) is considered a promising cathode for sodium-ion batteries due to its reversible three-electron reaction. However, the inferior electronic conductivity and sluggish reaction kinetics limit its practical applications. Herein, we successfully constructed a three-dimensional cross-linked porous architecture NMTP material (AsN@NMTP/C) by a natural microbe of Aspergillus niger (AsN), and the structure of different NMTP cathodes was optimized by adjusting different transition metal Mn/Ti ratios. Both approaches effectively altered the three-dimensional NMTP structure, not only improving electronic conductivity and controlling Na+ diffusion pathways but also enhancing the electrochemical kinetics of the material. The resultant AsN@NMTP/C-650, sintered at 650 °C, exhibits better electrochemical performance with higher reversible three-electron reactions corresponding to the voltage platforms of Ti4+/3+, Mn3+/2+, and Mn4+/3+ around 2.1, 3.6, and 4.1 V (vs Na+/Na), respectively. The capacity retention rate is up to 89.3% after 1000 cycles at a 2C rate. Moreover, a series of results confirms that the Na3.4Mn1.2Ti0.8(PO4)3 cathode has the most excellent electrochemical performance when the Mn/Ti ratio is 1.2/0.8, with a high capacity of 96.59 mAh g–1 and 97.1% capacity retention after 500 cycles.

Novel NASICON-type carbon-coated LiTi2(PO4)3 microflowers (LTP-F/C) as a hybrid magnesium–lithium-ion battery (MLIB) cathode is presented for the first time. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the NASICON structure, nanosheet-constructed hierarchical architecture, and uniform carbon coating of LTP-F/C, this hybrid MLIB exhibits extraordinary electrochemical performance: ultra-high cycling stability (capacity retention of 80% after 3000 cycles at 10 C) and outstanding rate capability (94 mA h g−1 at 20 C) under a high discharge voltage plateau of ∼1.71 V (vs. Mg/Mg2+). This hybrid battery system design is highly promising for large-scale energy storage applications.

Solid-state sodium–metal batteries will not achieve reasonable power density without electrolytes that solve the dendrite (filamentation) problem. Metal-filament formation during plating at ceramic/metal interfaces can cause electrical failure by internal short-circuit or mechanical failure by electrolyte fracture. Herein, an Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 (NZSP) sodium-ion-conducting NASICON electrolyte in which TiO 2 is incorporated as an additive is presented, leading to a two-phase composite NZSP(TiO 2 ) with improved density, Young's modulus, hardness, grain structure, and bulk permittivity. These features of NZSP(TiO 2 ) suppress dendrite growth along grain boundaries, microcracks, and micropores. As well as demonstrating ultralow ceramic/Na kinetic resistance with electrochemical measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is performed to probe interfacial reaction mechanisms. The TiO 2 phase forms within grain boundaries and along NZSP surfaces. This modifies the two-phase material's microstructure and improves its electrochemical performance, while also increasing the critical current density for dendrite formation. Design guidelines are discussed to mitigate microscopic defects and dendrites in two-phase ceramic electrolytes.

Due to the uniform distribution of sodium in the crust, the increasing demand for high specific energy and long life in terms of energy storage is placing higher requests on sodium-ion battery technology. The activation of multi-electron reactions in NASICON sodium-ion battery cathode materials can not only reduce the use of vanadium, but also effectively increase the specific energy, therefore, it has received enormous attention from researchers. In this report, the importance of the covalent proportion of metal-oxygen bond in activating the V 4+ /V 5+ redox with higher discharge voltage in Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 has been extensively studied. Advanced characterization methods and theoretical calculations comprehensively explain the effects of Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ , and Cu 2+ on V 3+ substitution and the corresponding electrochemical behavior and structural change behavior. Moreover, a complete two-phase reaction in the high voltage reaction region (3.88 V) was observed in Na 3 V 1.5 Cu 0.5 (PO 4 ) 3 . Our results highlight the importance of the covalent proportion of metal-oxygen bonds in activating multi-electron reactions in NASICON structures.

Sodium super-ionic conductor (NASICON) structured Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP), a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), benefits by its unique three-dimensional (3D) channel structure. However, the inherent characteristics of NVP (such as low electrical conductivity) usually lead to inferior rate and long-cycling performance, which miss the requirements of practical application in electrical energy storage systems (ESSs). Herein, we propose the synthesis of porous high-crystalline Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C nanoplates (NVP/C-P) via hydrothermal method and post-calcination. The porous nanoplate structure provides increased specific surface area and shortened diffusion pathway for ion/electron transport. Consequently, NVP/C-P cathodes exhibit a high specific capacity (117 mAh g −1 , 0.2 C), exceptional rate performance (76.5 mAh g −1 , 100 C) and long cyclic stability (10,000 cycles).

In recent years, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been considered as one of the most promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Here, a new Na-super-ionic conductor (NASICON) cathode material NaFe 2 PO 4 (SO 4 ) 2 is successfully prepared through solid state method for SIBs. While the poor electronic conductivity of iron-based materials results in its poor rate and cycle performance. Then the electrochemical is effectively promoting via Ca 2+ doping. Na 0.84 Ca 0.08 Fe 2 PO 4 (SO 4 ) 2 have achieved considerable electrochemical properties. The first discharge specific capacity is 121.6 mA h g −1 at 25 mA g −1 with the voltage platform (∼3.1 V) corresponding to Fe 2+/3+ . After 100 cycles, the capacity retention is 55.1 %. The excellent electrochemical performance is caused by some Na + is substituted by Ca 2+ and leading to the fast sodium kinetics, which is well proved by the powder X-ray diffraction pattern and well corresponding to the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique and cyclic voltammetry testing result (the diffusivity values are around at 10 −12 cm 2 s −1 ).

Na 4 Mn 1.5 Fe 1.5 (PO 4 ) 2 P 2 O 7 (NMFPP), with its low cost and high energy density, is essential for accelerating the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries. However, its practical application is limited by serious voltage hysteresis and detrimental Jahn-Teller distortions. Herein, a high operating voltage and superior stable Nb-doped NMFPP with fewer intrinsic anti-site defects are elaborately designed by the reconstruction of the crystal lattice and electronic distribution. By introducing higher charge density Nb─O bonds, the lengths of Mn-O bonds are shortened, enhancing lattice stability. As a result, the lattice volume contracted during Na + extraction/insertion is decreased with niobium-modified Na 4 (Mn 0.5 Fe 0.5 ) 2.94 Nb 0.06 (PO 4 ) 2 P 2 O 7 , mitigating lattice distortion from the Jahn-Teller effect and increasing the capacity retention after 1000 cycles from 57.5% to 82.3%. More importantly, the delayed effect of Mn 2+ involvement in redox reactions is significantly reduced, raising the average operating voltage from 3.32 to 3.64 V and increasing the overall energy density by 13%. This study opens new avenues to develop advanced sodium-ion battery cathode materials with high energy density and long calendar life for energy storage.

Na 3 Mn 1−x Cr x Ti(PO 4 ) 3 /C composites with different chromium doping contents (x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, 0.10, 0.12, 0.15), a potential cathode material in sodium-ion batteries with its classical 3D NASCION structure, has been synthesized via a feasible sol-gel route. The doping effects on the crystal structure were verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman and Fourier-infrared spectra (FT-IR). The results show that chromium doping does not alter the structure of the material, and chromium is successfully doped for manganese site. Proper chromium doped Na 3 Mn 1−x Cr x Ti(PO 4 ) 3 /C composites exhibit a high reversible capacity and structural stability . Among them, Na 3 Mn 0.93 Cr 0.07 Ti(PO 4 ) 3 /C and Na 3 Mn 0.90 Cr 0.10 Ti(PO 4 ) 3 /C achieve the highest capacity retention (90.19% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C) and initial discharge specific capacity (119.65 mA h g -1 at 0.2 C), yielding the coulombic efficiency of ~100%. Interestingly, even after cycling at 10 C over 500 cycles, the Na + -storage capacity of 94.37 and 101.51 mA h g -1 with a capacity retention of 79.70% and 73.74% were respectively still obtained with x = 0.07 and 0.10, highlighting their excellent long cycling life and remarkable rate performances. Results from the cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy studies were combined to verify the enhanced sodium-ion diffusion coefficients .

Solid-state sodium metal batteries are promising for large-scale energy storage owing to their high safety, abundant sodium resources, and low material cost. However, NASICON-type solid-state electrolytes, such as Na3Zr2Si2PO12, still suffer from limited room-temperature ionic conductivity and poor ceramic densification. Herein, a multivalent co-doping strategy using Zn2+, Sc3+, Hf4+, and Nb5+was employed to regulate the crystal structure, sintering behavior, and Na+transport properties of NASICON electrolytes. The effects of isovalent and aliovalent dopants were systematically investigated by XRD, Rietveld refinement, SEM-EDS, bond-valence-site calculations, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The optimized monoclinic Na3.167Zn0.167Hf0.167Zr1.5Nb0.167Si2PO12electrolyte delivered a room-temperature total ionic conductivity of 1.16 mS cm−1and an activation energy of 0.35 eV, mainly due to optimized Na+migration-channel geometry and enhanced ceramic densification. Na||Na symmetric cells exhibited stable cycling for 500 h with a maximum polarization voltage of 20 mV. Furthermore, solid-state Na||Na3V2(PO4)3cells retained 95% capacity after 624 cycles at 1 C. This work provides a feasible doping strategy for advanced NASICON electrolytes and solid-state sodium metal batteries.
