KRb2(NO3)2Cl: a new birefringent crystal exhibiting a perovskite-related framework and a short cutoff edge

Zhiyuan Zhang,Die Xu,Zhencheng Wu,Mei Hu,Xin Su,Yineng Huang

The combination of π-conjugated groups [NO3] and Cl-centered polyhedra generates a new birefringent crystal with a perovskite-related framework, KRb2(NO3)2Cl, which is the first alkali metal nitrate chloride synthesized by a mild hydrothermal method. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group pbam (no. 55). In addition, KRb2(NO3)2Cl crystals with dimensions up to 7 × 1.5 × 1 mm3 were grown. Notably, KRb2(NO3)2Cl has a short UV cut-off edge (below 228 nm) and a significantly enhanced birefringence (Δn = 0.084 at 1064 nm). Theoretical calculations indicate that the birefringence enhancement mainly derives from π-conjugated [NO3] plane triangles.

The separation of thorium and rare earth elements using [A336][NO3]: insight into a new extraction mechanism

Fu Xuan,Zhang Fang,Wu Qiang,Li Yang,Huang Qing-Gang,Yan Ze-Yi

In this study, extraction and separation of thorium(IV) and a few representative rare earths in HNO 3 media was evaluated using trioctylmethylammonium nitrate ([A336][NO 3 ]) ionic liquid. An unexpected novel extraction mechanism was identified based on the studies in the slope analysis and ESI–MS spectrum. The trimer of [A336][NO 3 ] was confirmed to dominate the extraction reaction by ESI–MS spectrum before and after the extraction. The extraction efficiency of La(III), Eu(III) and Lu(III) by [A336][NO 3 ] are much lower than Th(IV) in acid medium, which means that it is possible to separate thorium from rare earths or the rare earth ores by using [A336][NO 3 ].

ZrO(NO3)2 as a functional additive to suppress the diffusion of polysulfides in lithium - Sulfur batteries

Jie Li,Lin Zhang,Furong Qin,Bo Hong,Qian Xiang,Kai Zhang,Jing Fang,Yanqing Lai

Lithium sulfur battery is deemed to one of the most hopefully useable and cost-effective options beyond traditional lithium ion batteries . Nevertheless, the intermediates shuttle effect and the instability of the lithium metal anode are still the significance of barriers to the actual application of lithium sulfur battery. In this work, zirconium oxynitrate (ZrO(NO 3 ) 2 ), which delivers good thermal stability and little hygroscopicity , is proposed as a dual functional electrolyte additive to ameliorate the electrochemical performance of lithium sulfur batteries. For one thing, the ZrO 2+ cations possess a strong affinity to sulfur, which can catalyze the conversion of dissolved polysulfides to S 8 . For another, ZrO(NO 3 ) 2 is negatively charged in the ether electrolyte because of the coordination ability of ZrO 2+ . It displays a strong repulsion to polysulfides which would effectively trap the dissolved polysulfides and prevent the polysulfides from diffusing into the electrolyte phase. Additionally, NO 3 − anions can be reduced and form a stable passivation film on Li-metal anode, which is beneficial to decrease the reacting activity of Li-metal anode upon polysulfides and stabilizing the surface topography of the Li-metal anode. Ultimately, the ZrO(NO 3 ) 2 electrolyte additive observably enhances the discharge capacity and cycle stability of Lithium sulfur battery.

Promoted role of Cu(NO3)2 on aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-diformylfuran over VOSO4

Xiuquan Jia,Jiping Ma,Min Wang,Zhongtian Du,Fang Lu,Feng Wang,Jie Xu

The promoted effect of Cu(NO 3 ) 2 on aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) catalyzed by VOSO 4 in acetonitrile was intensively investigated. It was revealed that Cu(NO 3 ) 2 facilitated the activation of VOSO 4 to generate active V 5+ species via the generation of NO x gas. The high DFF selectivity is ascribed to Cu 2+ cation which can effectively prohibit oxidative C C bond cleavage reaction of HMF and prevent radical reaction of DFF to humins. In addition, the polarity of solvent plays a great role on high selectivity of DFF.

In vitro controlled release of 5-aminosalicylate from ZnAl-NO3(-CO3) layered double hydroxide drug delivery system

Jichao Zhu,Xianli Dong,Kunhao Li,Siyu Tian,Yao Kong,Weitong Chen,Shuping Zhou

In the field of pharmaceutical research and development, the development of nano drug carriers based on intercalation structures has become one of the important development directions. Hydrotalcite (LDHs) and its derivatives have the advantages of low cost, simple synthesis, high drug loading efficiency, good biocompatibility, and easy degradation, and have received widespread attention in the field of biomedicine. Based on this, we synthesized 5-aminosalicylate (5-ASA) intercalated NO 3 based and CO 3 based ZnAl-LDHs drug delivery systems using ion-exchange and chemical co-precipitation methods, respectively. The crystalline structure, morphology, thermal stability, and host-guest interaction were characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS). The drug loading, drug release behavior and release kinetic of 5-ASA intercalated ZnAl-LDHs were studied. The characterization results indicated that the intercalation mode of the drug and the strength of the host-guest interaction are related to the interlayer anion type and synthesis process of ZnAl-LDHs. The amount of 5-ASA loaded into LDHs from an ion-exchange process was 28.6 and 13.8 wt% for NO 3 − and CO 3 2− based LDHs, respectively, whereas it was 6.9 and 10.4 wt% for co-precipitation process. The modeling kinetics results indicated that the release process of 5-ASA by ZnAl-LDHs intercalated with 5-ASA conforms to the parabolic diffusion model. These results indicated that the drug delivery system was controlled by diffusion of 5-ASA ions into aqueous solution through exchange with phosphate anions.

PdSn/NiO/NaTaO3:La for photocatalytic ammonia synthesis by reduction of NO3− with formic acid in aqueous solution

Na Tong,Ying Wang,Yang Liu,Minbo Li,Zizhong Zhang,Huijuan Huang,Tao Sun,Jinxiang Yang,Fuying Li,Xuxu Wang

Photocatalytic ammonia synthesis is of great importance but remains very challenging in photocatalysis. Here, we fabricated a photocatalytic reaction system for the efficiently photocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia under UV irradiation using PdSn/NiO/NaTaO 3 :La as a photocatalyst in the presence of formic acid. Several important factors of the photocatalytic performance were investigated, including initial concentration of the nitrate solution, initial pH value and cocatalyst loadings. Nitrate conversion reaches 100% and ammonia selectivity is 72% over the optimum photocatalyst with 5% bimetallic PdSn alloy and 0.2% NiO loadings. The outstanding performance of photocatalyst can be ascribed to both the strong adsorption of nitrite on NiO and the efficient separation of electron-hole pairs by PdSn bimetallic alloy. Besides as the hole scavenger, formic acid also provides not only carboxyl anion radicals for nitrate reduction but also the in-situ buffer effect on ammonia formation. These results give inspiration for designing the reactive system with efficient photocatalytic ammonia synthesis.

Enhanced Thermophysical Properties of a Quaternary Molten Salt NaNO3–KNO3–NaNO2–Ca(NO3)2 Doped with Al2O3 Nanoparticles

Li Yan,Tian Lantu,Wang Shuo,Zhu Qunzhi

As the key heat storage and transfer medium in concentrated solar power (CSP) systems, molten salts’ thermophysical properties, such as thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, and thermal stability, critically determine the systems energy conversion efficiency and economic viability. However, conventional molten salts suffer from low thermal conductivity and limited energy storage density, restricting their application in high-temperature thermal energy storage. Recent advances show that doping with nanoparticles, such as Al 2 O 3 , CuO, and SiO 2 , can significantly improve these properties. Nevertheless, systematic studies on quaternary molten salt systems remain scarce. In this work, we focus on the quaternary eutectic salt H15 (15 wt% Ca(NO 3 ) 2 –5.95 wt% NaNO 3 –45.05 wt% KNO 3 –34 wt% NaNO 2 ), which demonstrates a high decomposition temperature of 597.4 °C alongside a relatively low melting point of 84.4 °C and high thermal energy storage density of 1052.41 kJ/kg. To overcome its thermal performance limitations, Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles (0.1 wt% to 3 wt%) were introduced to form a nanocomposite molten salt. The influence of varying nanoparticle loadings was assessed via DSC, HotDisk, SEM, and XRD to examine corresponding changes in phase transition behavior, thermal conductivity, viscosity, and material microstructure. This study provides theoretical and experimental support for developing high-performance, wide temperature-range thermal energy storage materials for advanced CSP systems.

Ce(NO3)3 as an electrolyte additive to regulate uniform lithium deposition for stable all-solid-state batteries

Ying Yang,Lei Li,Lili Liu,Ying Xiao,Shimou Chen

All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted extensive attention because of their high energy density and good safety performance. But the ionic conductivity at low temperature and dendritic growth hinder their further development. In this work, a flexible all solid-state electrolyte consisted with Ce(NO 3 ) 3 , lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide (LiFSI), and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is synthesized. Ce(NO 3 ) 3 as an effective additive can enhance the ionic conductivity of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) by regulating Li + transporting and stabilizing the interface between lithium metal anode and electrolyte by forming a stable and uniform solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on lithium metal anode surface. The as-prepared electrolyte exhibits a good ionic conductivity of 1.6 × 10 −4  S cm −1 at 60 °C and a wide electrochemical window of 4.4  V . The Li//Li symmetric cell with PEO + LiFSI+1%Ce(NO 3 ) 3 electrolyte displays a long cycling lifespan of over 1100 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 at 60 °C. Moreover, the corresponded LiFePO 4 (LFP)//Li cell exhibits a long cycling lifespan of 300 cycles and excellent rate capability. This work proposes an effective additive to improve ionic conductivity and stabilize the Li metal/electrolyte interface.

Regulating microstructure and performance of an ammonium nitrate-based energetic hydrogel via Cu(NO3)2·3H2O mediated modification

Yuan Chen,Yanchen Sun,Gaojie Fang,Wenyao Huang,Quan Wang

The performance of energetic hydrogels—a promising class of water-resistant explosives—is often related to the internal microstructure and chemical reactivity. This study introduces a modification strategy employing copper (II) nitrate trihydrate (Cu(NO 3 ) 2 ·3H 2 O) to simultaneously tailor the hydrogel’s microstructure and enhance its chemical reactivity. The additive functions dually: by acidifying the system, it accelerates cross-linking kinetics and refines sensitized microbubbles; concurrently, it lowers the thermal decomposition barrier of the gel matrix. At an optimal content of 0.75 wt%, the proportion of effective microbubbles (diameter ≤ 100 µm) is maximized to 42.2 %, establishing a dense hotspot network. This microstructural and chemical optimization synergistically boosts detonation performance, increasing velocity by 15.34 % to 4610 m·s⁻¹ and reducing the minimum initiation charge from 50 g to 30 g. Thermal analysis confirms a reduced apparent activation energy and reveals a possible low-temperature exothermic pathway, providing direct evidence for the enhanced reactivity. Crucially, this enhancement does not compromise handling safety, as the initial decomposition temperature remains above 244 °C for all formulations. This work establishes additive-mediated modification as an effective route to engineer energetic materials by concurrently optimizing the microstructure and accelerating the reaction kinetics.

Experimental investigation on post-combustion CO2 capture for [Bpy][NO3] and MEA aqueous blends with lower regeneration energy

Yinge Bai,Kaixuan Wang,Lulu Wang,Shaojuan Zeng,Lu Bai,Xiangping Zhang

CO 2 capture is an important technology to achieve carbon emission reduction. The key is reducing the energy consumption of the CO 2 capture process. Ionic liquids (ILs) blended with organic amines can be used as an efficient CO 2 absorbent allowing for low regeneration energy consumption. This work proposes the use of N-butylpyridinium nitrate ([Bpy][NO 3 ]) in combination with organic solvents for CO 2 capture. The effects of ILs concentration, reboiler load and flue gas concentration on regeneration energy consumption were studied on a continuous pilot unit for absorption-desorption process. The results showed that the CO 2 absorption capacity of 30 wt% MEA + 10 wt% [Bpy][NO 3 ] was 0.1308 g CO 2 /g solvent, higher than monoethanolamine/water, and the CO 2 absorption capacity remained at 74.3% after the five cycles. At 40 °C, the viscosity of IL-amine blending solvents before and after absorption was 2.01 and 3.534 mPa·s, respectively, significantly lower than that of the conventional non-aqueous phase absorbent. The continuous absorption-desorption results showed that the capture rate of IL blending reached more than 95%. The regeneration energy consumption is 34.2% lower than the 30 wt% MEA.

Unprecedented Selective Aerobic Oxidation of Alcohols to Carbonyl Compounds Over Drilled Carbon Nanotubes Assisted with Fe(NO3)3

Shurui Xu,Guoyu Zhong,Linxin Qu,Zihao Liang,Tao Li,Yifei Yuan,Shaona Zheng,Wenbo Liao,Abdul Waqas Anjum,Xiaobo Fu,Jing Xiao

Selectively oxidizing alcohols to carbonyl compounds in an eco-friendly and sustainable way is of great importance. Instead of the noble catalytic system, we developed a novel catalytic system based on drilled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) assisted by Fe(NO3)3 that exhibits high activity for aerobic oxidation reactions. Interestingly, our studies demonstrated a direct relationship between the defects in the drilled CNTs and their activity. Catalytic evaluations revealed that the synergistic effect of drilled CNTs combined with Fe(NO3)3 resulted in unprecedented activity. The edge defects of the CNTs and electron transformation of Fe work synergistically to activate O2. Furthermore, the electronic transition from the drilled CNTs to Fe3+ confirmed the synergistic effect of the drilled CNTs/Fe(NO3)3. Thus, our studies not only demonstrate the use of drilled CNTs/Fe(NO3)3 in a sustainable catalytic system but also provide insight into the synergistic effect between these components for the universal oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds.

Effect of Y(NO3)3 additive on morphologies and size of metallic W particles produced by hydrogen reduction

Zepeng Lv,Dong Liu,Yijie Wu,Run Zhang,Haibo Sun,Jie Dang,Liwen Hu

Tungsten, one of the refractory metals, has lots of excellent properties, making tungsten powders become a choice of raw material for many applications. This work reported a simple method (the salt-assisted hydrogen reduction of WO 3 powders) for preparing tungsten powders with desired morphologies and size. By adjusting the amount of additive (Y(NO 3 ) 3 ) and reduction temperature, metallic tungsten particles with different morphologies and size were obtained. It was found that both temperature and additive had apparent effects on the morphology and size of metallic W particles, and the large parallelepiped-shaped powders disappeared and large irregular blocky-shaped powders were degraded under the influence of additive. With the increase of temperature and amount of salt, particles became more dispersed and the size increased at higher temperatures, and the shape of particles was changed from spherical to polyhedral as well. On the contrary, the size of sub-particles became smaller as increasing amount of Y(NO 3 ) 3 at lower temperatures. Based on the results, the reaction and refining mechanisms for preparing tungsten were proposed as well.
