A Ni-Cu/CuPP composite coating with good wear resistance and long-term corrosion resistance for seawater applications

Xingtao Cheng,Kaijun Wei,Hongjie Li,Na Teng,Shijun Xu,Quangang Chen,Xianmin Gong,Yi He,Siming Yan

At the present time, the subject of seawater scouring and corrosion phenomena is attracting considerable attention. Accordingly, the present study involved the synthesis of CuPP materials and the preparation of Ni-Cu/CuPP coatings for deployment in marine environments characterised by elevated stress and corrosion. The results show that CuPP can effectively enhance the wear resistance and long-term corrosion resistance of Ni-Cu coatings, which is attributed to ‘fine grain strengthening’ and ‘diffusion strengthening’. Furthermore, the formation of a friction transfer film and the transformation of the wear mechanism are the primary factors contributing to the exceptional wear resistance of the Ni-Cu/CuPP composite coatings.

Hydrotalcite-derived Ni–Cu highly dispersed nanoalloy catalysts for promoting low temperature rapid dehydrogenation of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole

Jie Jiang,Zhenzhen Xue,Yawei Wang,Di Tang,Rongfeng Yuan,Ning Ma,Alaa S. Abd-El-Aziz

12H-NECZ (dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole), a promising liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) with high H 2 capacity, stability, and low dehydrogenation temperature, requires efficient low-cost dehydrogenation catalysts for industrial-scale application. In this work, NiCuAl-LDH-R (hydrotalcite-derived NiCu bimetallic catalyst) with rosette-like two-dimensional structures and highly dispersed NiCu alloys are prepared for the dehydrogenation reaction of 12H-NECZ. The addition of Cu to NiAl-LDH-R can significantly reduce the reaction temperature while achieving rapid dehydrogenation. Among the NiCuAl-LDH-R catalysts, the Ni 7 CuAl-LDH-R exhibited the highest dehydrogenation performance with 100 % dehydrogenation efficiency and 100 % selectivity of NECZ at 180 °C within 4h (12H-NECZ/catalyst mass ratio = 15:1). The electronic and geometric effects of Ni and Cu, excellent dispersion of NiCu alloy, strong metal carrier interaction between NiCu alloy and AlOx, as well as the rich alkalinity synergistically contributes to the catalyst's exceptional dehydrogenation activity. The cost-effective nonprecious catalyst, with tunable morphology/composition and excellent performance, shows great potential for 12H-NECZ dehydrogenation applications.

Rational design of porous vanadium-based alloys modified with a Ni-Cu-Mo coating for alkaline water electrolysis

Jinjing Du,Yu Zhou,Xinhai Liu,Xinxin Cui,Xuan Zhang,Bin Wang,Xiao Feng,Jun Zhu,Heng Zuo,Qian Li,Xihong He,Ping Hu

The development of a hydrogen evolution catalyst with both catalytic activity and stability is critical for hydrogen production from electrolytic water. Herein, a V-based porous alloy was prepared via high-energy ball milling and solid-state sintering. Then, the V-based porous alloy was modified with a Ni-Cu-Mo ternary alloy coating by direct current electrodeposition to obtain a composite hydrogen evolution cathode with high hydrogen evolution activity. The substrate has a certain hydrogen storage capacity combined with a high-activity Ni-Cu-Mo coating. The composite hydrogen evolution cathode exhibited high electrocatalytic activity toward the HER. It can afford a lower overpotential of 93 mV and a smaller Tafel slope of 97.4 mV/dec with a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 in 1.0 M KOH. The composite hydrogen evolution cathode demonstrated outstanding stability after 2000 cycles and good durability after intermittent electrolysis for 20 h. Hydrogen protons can protect the components of the cathode composite from dissolution during discontinuous constant potential electrolysis. The composite hydrogen evolution cathode also exhibited a strong catalytic capacity for hydrogen evolution during intermittent electrolysis under alkaline conditions.

Ultrathin MCo2O4(M = Fe, Ni, Cu and Cr) Nanosheets/Carbon heterostructures for highly efficient thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate

Jiayuan Zhang,Zhenlong Liu,Yu Liu,Liping Jiang,Caixia Ma,Lei Yang,Zunyuan Xie,Jizhen Li,Guofang Zhang

Transition metal oxides exhibit inherent catalytic activity for ammonium perchlorate (AP) decomposition; however, their performance is limited by the scarcity of accessible active sites and low conductivity. Therefore, morphology-directed structural design and interfacial engineering are highly desirable. In this study, two-dimensional (2D) MCo 2 O 4 nanosheets ( M = Fe, Ni, Cu, and Cr) were synthesized via a thermal expansion method and subsequently combined with three types of carbon materials C x (C x = rGO, CNTs, and g-C 3 N 4 ) to construct 2D MCo 2 O 4 /C x composites. Structural analyses demonstrate that the intimate interfacial coupling between 2D MCo 2 O 4 nanosheets and carbon materials effectively suppresses restacking and establishes a continuous conductive network. More importantly, strong interfacial coupling enables effective electronic modulation at the heterojunction, resulting in an optimized charge distribution and enhanced interfacial electron transfer. Among all catalysts, 5 wt. % FeCo 2 O 4 /rGO-1 demonstrates the most notable catalytic activity for AP decomposition, reducing its peak temperature in the high-temperature decomposition stage by 137.4 °C and increasing its heat release by 736.33 J·g⁻ 1 . Electrochemical tests confirm that accelerated interfacial charge transfer enhances AP pyrolysis. Kinetic modelling, TG-FTIR-MS, and DFT calculations indicate that the 2D-2D heterointerface boosts the adsorption of the AP intermediate NH 3 and promotes its conversion into higher-valence NO 2 , while also accelerating electron transport and lowering the decomposition barrier. The synergistic effect between interfacial electron transport and the heterojunction promotes the rapid AP degradation. Based on these findings, a plausible catalytic mechanism for AP decomposition is proposed.

Synergistically Enhanced Bifunctional Electrocatalysis on W-Se Co-Modified Lightweight Porous Ni/Cu Foil for Methanol and Urea Oxidation

Guangya Hou,Jingnan Wei,Jianli Zhang,Qiang Chen,Yiping Tang

The development of lightweight, low-cost, and high-performance non-precious metal electrocatalytic electrodes is critical to advancing the practical implementation of methanol and urea oxidation reactions (MOR and UOR) in next-generation energy conversion systems. Herein, we reported a facile synthesis of a W-Se co-modified porous Ni/Cu paper electrode (W-NiSe/Cup) via synchronous pulse electrodeposition onto filter paper-derived porous Cu foil. The hierarchical porosity and high specific surface area originated from the paper template, while synergistic electronic modulation among Ni, W, and Se enhanced intrinsic catalytic activity. At 0.8 V, the W-NiSe/Cupelectrode delivered current densities of 298 mA·cm−2(MOR) and 305 mA·cm−2(UOR) with a lower-mass loading, representing 1.29-fold and 1.34-fold enhancements over the Ni/Cupelectrode. Furthermore, the electrode exhibited exceptional durability: under chronopotentiometry operation at 100 mA·cm−2in a 6-fold-concentrated electrolyte (6 M KOH + 3.0 M CH3OH + 1.98 M CO(NH2)2), the operating potentials retained 95.74% (MOR) and 118.05% (UOR) of their initial values after 9 h. This study offers a novel strategy for designing lightweight non-precious metal catalytic electrodes for portable energy devices and also verifies the broad potential of biomass templates in constructing advanced energy electrocatalytic materials.

Improving the hydrothermal stability and hydrogen selectivity of Ni-Cu based catalysts for the aqueous-phase reforming of methanol

Yong Liu,Siyu Yu,Xinyu Wu,Xueyu Cao,Haojie Geng,Cuijuan Zhang,Shetian Liu

Non-precious metal catalysts suitable for hydrogen production via aqueous phase reforming (APR) of methanol show important technical and commercial value in the development of distributed, small/micro-scale on-site hydrogen production systems. They still face the challenges of reduced activity and stability due to sintering and oxidation of active metal nanoparticles , change of the surface state and collapse of the pore structure of used supports under hydrothermal conditions. To solve these problems, a series of ZnO/Ni-xCu/Al 2 O 3 (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) catalysts were prepared by a simple impregnation method in this work. The addition of Cu improved the reducibility of NiO, and promoted the formation of smaller and more dispersed metal particles on the surface of Al 2 O 3 , facilitating hydrogen production and hindering methane formation. Among them, the highest average hydrogen production rate (362.1 μmol‧min −1 ‧gcat −1 ) and the highest hydrogen selectivity (99%) were reached using ZnO/Ni-8Cu/Al 2 O 3 catalyst, which were 1.6 times and 20.7% higher than those obtained on the mono-metallic ZnO/Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst, respectively. On the other hand, the modification of Ni-8Cu/Al 2 O 3 with ZnO prevented effectively the reaction of surface water with Al 2 O 3 and inhibited the formation of boehmite phase, leading to dramatical improvement of its stability during APR of methanol with a prolonged lifetime (72 h) by 6 times. This new developed ZnO/Ni-xCu/Al 2 O 3 catalysts offer great potential for the development of commercial catalysts to produce hydrogen from APR of methanol.

Investigation of Ni–Cu-acid multifunctional synergism in NiCu-phyllosilicate catalysts toward the 1,4-butynediol hydrogenation to 1,4-butanediol

Changzhen Wang,Xueqing Hai,Jia Li,Yupeng Liu,Xiaosheng Yu,Yongxiang Zhao

We studied the Ni–Cu-acid multifunctional synergism in NiCu-phyllosilicate catalysts toward 1,4-butynediol hydrogenation to 1,4-butanediol by varying the reduction temperature, which can activate different bimetal and support interactions. Compared with a monometallic Ni phyllosilicate (phy), which only showed one type of metal species when reduced at ∼750 °C, there are three types of metal species for the bimetallic Ni–Cu-phyllosilicate derived catalysts, namely Cuphy, differentiated Ni, and Niphy. Thorough structure–activity/selectivity correlation investigations showed that, although the Ni9Cu1-P catalyst matrix can produce tiny amounts of differentiated Ni0 species under the induction of reduced Cu0 at R250 condition, it could not form Ni–Cu bimetallic interactions for the collaborative hydrogenation of 1,4-butynediol, and the product stays in the semi hydrogenated state. When the reduction temperature is raised to 500 °C, stable Ni–Cu alloy active sites exist, accompanied by the strong metal support interaction and metal acid effect derived from the intimate contact between the extracted metal sites and the surviving functional phyllosilicate support; these functionalities yield a supreme hydrogenation performance of the R500 sample with a 1,4-butanediol yield larger than 91.2%.

Metal Doping Effect of the M–Co2P/Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes (M = Fe, Ni, Cu) Hydrogen Evolution Hybrid Catalysts

Yuan Pan,Yunqi Liu,Yan Lin,Chenguang Liu

The enhancement of catalytic performance of cobalt phosphide-based catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is still challenging. In this work, the doping effect of some transition metal (M = Fe, Ni, Cu) on the electrocatalytic performance of the M–Co2P/NCNTs (NCNTs, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes) hybrid catalysts for the HER was studied systematically. The M–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalysts were synthesized via a simple in situ thermal decomposition process. A series of techniques, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and N2 sorption were used to characterize the as-synthesized M–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalysts. Electrochemical measurements showed the catalytic performance according to the following order of Fe–Co2P/NCNTs > Ni–Co2P/NCNTs > Cu–Co2P/NCNTs, which can be ascribed to the difference of structure, morphology, and electronic property after doping. The doping of Fe atoms promote the growth of the [111] crystal plane, resulting in a large specific area and exposing more catalytic active sites. Meanwhile, the Feδ+ has the highest positive charge among all the M–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalysts after doping. All these changes can be used to contribute the highest electrocatalytic activity of the Fe–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalyst for HER. Furthermore, an optimal HER electrocatalytic activity was obtained by adjusting the doping ratio of Fe atoms. Our current research indicates that the doping of metal is also an important strategy to improve the electrocatalytic activity for the HER.

Exploration of the mechanism of wear and seawater erosion resistance of modified MXene-reinforced Ni-Cu alloy composite coatings

Xingtao Cheng,Yi He,Siming Yan,Liping Yan,Zhiyuan Li,Shijun Xu,Kaijun Wei,Yi Fan,Quangang Chen,Wanwan Peng

Wear and erosion are common issues encountered when applying metal components in harsh marine environments. In this study, N-MX@ZnO materials were prepared by a synergistic modification of Ti 3 C 2 T x using ethylenediamine and zinc oxide quantum dots. Subsequently, the Ni-Cu/N-MX@ZnO coating was deposited onto J55 steel using pulsed electrodeposition, exhibiting excellent tribological properties. The toughness, wear, and seawater erosion behavior of the coatings were investigated. The results demonstrated that the COF value of the Ni-Cu/N-MX@ZnO coating was reduced by 48.23% and the impedance value was increased by 300% in comparison to the pure sample. The enhancement mechanism can be attributed to the physical barrier effect and uniform dispersion effect of N-MX@ZnO, which caused the Ni-Cu/N-MX@ZnO coatings to form a friction-transferring film during the friction process.

Turning waste to treasure: Hierarchical Ni–Cu borate layered double hydroxide@Ni foam as durable electrocatalyst for ammonia electrooxidation reaction

Mabrook S. Amer,Prabhakarn Arunachalam,Ahmad A. Alsaleh,Zeyad A. Almutairi,Hazim M. Al-Otaibi,Abdullah Al-Mayouf

Developing efficient and selective electrocatalysts for electrochemical ammonia oxidation (eAOR), coupled with proper electrochemical processes, offers promising opportunities for recycling ammonia into valuable fertilizers and as a potential technology for energy production and storage applications. Here, we introduce Ni(OH) 2 /Ni x Cu y B@NF electrodes, developed by in-situ solvothermal methods, as highly effective and durable electrocatalytic materials. The eAOR features of Ni(OH) 2 /Ni x Cu y B@NF displays the smallest overpotential of 130 mV (at 50 mA cm −2 ) and attained a enhanced current response of 178.3 mA cm −2 (@ 1.60 V RHE ). As shown by the electrocatalytic features and stability of Ni(OH) 2 /Ni x Cu y B@NF films at 1.43 V for an eAOR of 50 mA cm −2 , the HER current was 100 mA cm −2 at 99 mV, the smallest value among all Ni-based electrocatalysts studied. Gas chromatography (GC) experiments show that ammonia produces N 2 in the electrochemical cell at different times. In the eAOR-HER system, impressive electrocatalytic performance has been observed with higher FE of N 2 and H 2 was 47 % and 27.1 %. A two-electrode arrangement of Ni(OH) 2 /Ni x Cu y B@NF needs only 1.53 V to split ammonia to acquire 10 mA cm −2 , which is lower than any other electrode material. Based on the results, Ni(OH) 2 /Ni x Cu y B@NF might be a suitable system for wastewaters bearing high levels of ammonia, generating more sustainable hydrogen from wastewater, and recycling fertilizers.

Synergistic catalytic effects of ZIF-67 and transition metals (Ni, Cu, Pd, and Nb) on hydrogen storage properties of magnesium

Yongqing Wang,Zhiqiang Lan,Hong Fu,Haizhen Liu,Jin Guo

MgTM/ZIF-67 nanocomposites were prepared by the deposition-reduction method using ZIF-67, MgCl 2 , and TMCl x (TM = Ni, Cu, Pd, Nb) as raw materials. The dehydrogenation activation energies of MgTM/ZIF-67 (TM = Ni, Cu, Pd, Nb) nanocomposites were calculated to be 115.4 kJ mol −1 H 2 , 115.7 kJ mol −1 H 2 , 113.6 kJ mol −1 H 2 , and 75.8 kJ mol −1 H 2 , respectively; hence, the MgNb/ZIF-67 nanocomposite manifested the best comprehensive hydrogen storage performance. The hydrogen storage capacity of the MgNb/ZIF-67 nanocomposite was hardly attenuated after the 100th hydrogen absorption-desorption cycle. The dehydrogenated enthalpies of MgH 2 and CoMg 2 H 5 in MgNb/ZIF-67 hydride were calculated to be 72.4 kJ mol −1 H 2 and 81.0 kJ mol −1 H 2 , respectively, which were lower than those of additive-free MgH 2 and Mg/ZIF-67. The improved hydrogen storage properties of MgNb/ZIF-67 can be ascribed to the CoMg 2 –Mg(Nb) core-shell structure and the catalytic effects of NbH and niobium oxide nanocrystals .

Structure Evolution of Ni–Cu Bimetallic Catalysts Derived from Layered Double Hydroxides for Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Tetrahydrofurfuryl Alcohol

Xiao Chen,Wenqi Liu,Jingjie Luo,Hongyu Niu,Rongrong Li,Changhai Liang

The hydrogenation of furfural containing multifunctional group often needs the high-efficiency cooperation of multiple catalytic active centers, which is greatly determined by the regulation of the surface and interface structure of multicomponent catalytic materials. Based on such circumstance, a series of highly dispersed supported bimetallic Cu–Ni catalysts prepared by the in situ topological transformation of layered double hydroxides have been investigated for the one-pot hydrogenation of furfural. Compared with the supported monometallic Cu and Ni catalysts, the optimized bimetallic Cu1Ni3/MgAlO catalyst presents highly efficient and good selectivity in the hydrogenation of furfural at the bath reactor. The selectivity to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol reaches 94.0% with a complete conversion of furfural at 110 °C under 3 MPa of H2 for 3 h. The results of TEM and in situ FT-IR confirm that the Ni-rich Cu–Ni alloy in the Cu1Ni3/MgAlO catalyst generates a strong synergistic effect, which shifts the adsorption configuration of furfural from parallel or vertical adsorption to tilted adsorption so as to significantly improve the catalytic performance. The intrinsic catalytic performances of CuxNiy/MgAlO catalysts indicate that the TOFC═O and TOFC═C values can be balanced through construction of the structure of the catalyst for achieving the synergistic effect between Cu and Ni significantly to enhance the one-pot selective hydrogenation of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. Additionally, the Cu1Ni3/MgAlO catalyst presents excellent reusability by six-cycle testing. The above results indicate that the Cu1Ni3/MgAlO with the cooperation of multiple catalytic active centers is a promising catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of furfural.
