Bifunctional hierarchical NiCoP@FeNi LDH nanosheet array electrocatalyst for industrial-scale high-current-density water splitting

Liming Yang,Tao Yang,Enhui Wang,Xiangtao Yu,Kang Wang,Zhentao Du,Sheng Cao,Kuo-Chih Chou,Xinmei Hou

Aiming to design and prepare non-noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen production at high current density (HCD), NiCoP@FeNi LDH hierarchical nanosheets were deposited on nickel foam progressively using a hydrothermal-phosphorization-electrodeposition process. For hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), NiCoP@FeNi LDH/NF requires only 195 and 230 mV overpotentials to reach 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively. For overall water splitting, only 1.70 V is required at 1000 mA cm −2 . This is the largest value for non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts reported so far at HCD. The hierarchical structure exhibits good electron transport capability and the porous-macroporous structure enhances the gas release rate, resulting in enhanced hydrogen production at HCD. Especially, the synergistic effect of NiCoP and FeNi LDH contributes to the adsorption-desorption equilibrium of intermediate radicals during the reaction process and ultimately enhances the catalytic activity. This work provides useful direction for industrial-scale hydrogen production applications at HCD.

NH4F-modulated 3D NiCoP nanosheet arrays for ultrahigh-energy-density supercapacitors with long-Term Cyclability

Chunyu Wu,Zhiqiang Wei,Meijie Ding,Meipan Zhou,Yanxia He,Ke Huang,Qingpan Liu,Jinglong Bai

Transition metal phosphides are regarded as ideal electrode materials for high energy density supercapacitors due to their high theoretical specific capacitance and multi-electron redox properties, but they still face challenges such as low utilization of active sites, high resistance to ion diffusion, and structural collapse during cycling. In this study, we propose a three-dimensional nickel-cobalt phosphide nanosheet array design strategy based on ammonium fluoride (NH 4 F) modulation, and vertically aligned three-dimensional porous nickel-cobalt-phosphide nanosheet arrays (F5–NiCoP/NF) were constructed in-situ on nickel foam substrates by a template-free hydrothermal-phosphorization two-step method. Its superior electrochemical performance stems from bimetallic synergy and the high conductivity of the phosphide. Vertical nanosheet arrays build a three-dimensional conductive network to reduce ion diffusion resistance, and abundant pores significantly accelerate charge transport and expose abundant electroactive sites. Notably, this approach simultaneously simplifies the preparation process and reduces the cost. Benefitted from these merits, the F5–NiCoP/NF electrode achieves a high specific capacitance of 3244 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 , a capacity retention of 75.69 % at a high multiplicity of 10 A g −1 , and retains 81.44 % of its initial capacity after 10,000 cycles. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor F5–NiCoP/NF//AC exhibits an energy density of 48.37 Wh kg −1 and a power density of 800.04 W kg −1 .

Enhancing OER and overall water splitting performance of amorphous NiFe LDH grown on Ni foam with the needle-like NiCoP transition layer

Xiaoyu Chen,Xiaoshuai Yu,Chuncheng Yang,Guoyong Wang

The oxygen evolution reaction is more challenging than the hydrogen evolution reaction in overall water splitting, not only because the four-electron reaction is more complex but also because the oxidizing environment of the anode reaction is more destructive to the electrode material. Generally, such destruction results in the formation of an oxide film that hinders the transition of electrons and subsequently decelerates the succeeding reaction. This paper proposes a transition layer for self-supporting electrodes (NiFe LDH@NiCoP/NF) in which NiCoP grows between the NF and NiFe LDH. The implementation of NiCoP as a transition layer, showcasing excellent antioxidation capability and conductivity, effectively reduced overpotentials and consequently enhanced the catalytic performance. Benefiting from this transition layer, in a 1.0 M KOH, the NiFe LDH@NiCoP/NF catalyst exhibited outstanding OER and HER performance, requiring only 281 and 102 mV, respectively, to achieve 100 and 10 mA cm −2 , and also exhibited a cell voltage for overall water splitting of 1.56 V at 10 mA cm −2 .

NiCoP nanoparticle-decorated carbon nanosheet arrays assembled on nickel nanowires for volumetric energy-dense supercapacitors

Min Hong,Bingcheng Luo,Chao Zhou,Shusheng Xu,Liying Zhang,Zili Zhang,Zhi Yang,Nantao Hu,Yafei Zhang,Zheng Liang

Transitional metal phosphide NixCoyP has been considered a promising capacitor electrode material due to its high specific capacity. However, the inferior electronic conductivity and structure instability of NixCoyP severely restrict its applications. Designing effective structures is challenging to simultaneously optimize the conductivity and stability of NixCoyP. Herein, a hierarchical structure of film electrodes based on NiCoP nanoparticle-decorated carbon nanosheet arrays assembled on nickel nanowires (Ni@C–NiCoP) were demonstrated for volumetric energy-dense supercapacitors by assembling C nanosheets loaded with phosphide nanoparticles on Ni nanowires film. The porous carbon nanosheets array in situ assembled on Ni wires could provide high structural stability as well as enhanced ion diffusibility. Simultaneously, NiCoP nanoparticles could remain unpulverized and improved the utilization ratio under the protection of carbon nanosheets. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the interfaces of NiCoP and carbon could transmit charges sufficiently near the Fermi energy level, which was attributed to the hybridization between C 2p and Co 3d orbitals. The as-fabricated Ni@C–NiCoP film electrode could deliver a high volumetric capacity of 751 C cm−3 at 0.5 A cm−3 and retain 481 C cm−3 at a high rate of 5 A cm−3. Moreover, the as-assembled hybrid supercapacitor (graphene/carbon//Ni@C–NiCoP) exhibited a high volumetric capacitance of 161 F cm−3 at 0.5 A cm−3, together with a superior energy density of 49.6 mW h cm−3 and a power density of 3823.6 mW cm−3. Remarkably, high capacitance retention of 89% was achieved after 10 000 cycles at 4 A cm−3. The concept of hierarchical electrode design can pave the road to engineer high-performance electrode materials for energy storage and catalysis.

Facile synthesis of hierarchical NiCoP nanowires@NiCoP nanosheets core–shell nanoarrays for high-performance asymmetrical supercapacitor

Liu Qingsong,Hu Rui,Qi Jiqiu,Sui Yanwei,He Yezeng,Meng Qingkun,Wei Fuxiang,Ren Yaojian

Transition metal phosphides have been regarded as reliable supercapacitor electrode materials and extensively researched. In this work, a facile three-step way has been taken to synthesize NiCoP@NiCoP core–shell nanoarrays directly grown on carbon cloth, which was used as a high-performance supercapacitor electrode. Compared with the NiCo-LDH precursor and NiCoP nanowire and NiCoP nanosheet, NiCoP@NiCoP core–shell composite shows higher electrochemical performance owing to the integration of the advantages of phosphides and core–shell structure. To be specific, the as-fabricated NiCoP C–S electrode exhibits great electrochemical performance with high specific capacitance (1492.5 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 ), good rate performance (68.82% of the initial specific capacitance at 15 A g −1 ) and outstanding cycling stability (maintains 80.9% of the initial capacitances after 5000 cycles at 10 A g −1 ). Moreover, the assembled NiCoP C–S//rGO asymmetric supercapacitor device delivers a high energy density of 48.13 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 1125 W kg −1 and it still retains 20.94 Wh kg −1 at a high power density of 11250 W kg −1 , indicating its great possibility of practical application.

Facile synthesis of hierarchical NiCoP nanosheets/NiCoP nanocubes homojunction electrocatalyst for highly efficient and stable hydrogen evolution reaction

Yikai Lu,Chenchen Liu,Shengjie Xu,Yu Liu,Deli Jiang,Jianjun Zhu

Designing and synthesizing stable, low-cost, and eco-friendly precious-metal-free electrocatalysts with high performance for hydrogen evolution is a critical and challenging task in the research and development of renewable hydrogen energy. Herein, we show an interfacial engineering strategy to synthesize the NiCoP nanosheets/NiCoP nanocubes homojunction electrocatalyst supported on Ni foam (2D/3D-NiCoP/NF). The as-synthesized 2D/3D-NiCoP/NF catalyst shows impressive HER activity, and a current density of 10 mA cm −2 can be achieved with only an overpotential of 37 mV in 1 M KOH solution. Such impressive HER performance of this 2D/3D-NiCoP/NF homojunction electrocatalyst is principally due to the exposure of abundance accessible active sites originated from the hierarchical structure of nanocubes on the nanosheets. Moreover, the intimate contact between 2D/3D-NiCoP and NF can simultaneously shorten the electron transport pathway and improve its stability. This novel 2D/3D-NiCoP/NF homojunction is expected to provide a powerful interface-engineering reference for the design and construction of high-efficiency synergistic HER electrocatalysts.

Electronic structure modulation and morphological engineering of trifunctional NixCoyP electrode for ultrastable overall water splitting at 1 A cm−2 and efficient biomass oxidation valorization

Liyan Wang,Zhaokun Wang,Liang Chu,Zhi Huang,Mu Yang,Ge Wang

The development of transition metal electrocatalysts with excellent HER, OER and HMFOR activity can accelerate the achievement of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”. Herein, we report a simple structure modulation and morphological strategy for constructing Ni x Co y P-3 nanoneedles array with superhydrophilic/aerophobic surface. The small and well-dispersed nanoneedles can expose a larger electrochemical surface area. It has good mechanical stability, which can withstand the impact of violent bubbles at ampere-level current densities. Ni x Co y P-3 has a stronger H 2 O adsorption capacity than Ni 2 P, and can promote the adsorption and desorption of H* to facilitate the HER process. During the OER process, the formation of the Ni x Co y P-3/Ni x Co y OOH heterostructure is an important factor to stabilize oxygen evolution at ampere-level current densities. During the HMFOR process, Ni x Co y P-3 has a stronger HMF adsorption energy than Ni 2 P, and the generated FDCA can be desorbed from the Ni x Co y P-3 surface more easily. The overpotentials of the Ni x Co y P-3 are only 38.8 mV and 231.2 mV for HER and OER at 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline medium. When in the 1.0 M KOH + 50 mM HMF, only 1.37 V was required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 of the Ni x Co y P-3 II Ni x Co y P-3 two-electrode system. Ni x Co y P-3 can drive 1000 mA cm −2 overall water splitting for 100 h of stable operation in 1 M KOH, validating its potential in industrial hydrogen production.

Hydrogen generation by hydrolysis of solid sodium borohydride for portable PEMFC applications

Xiaoteng Min,Dan Chai,Kunpeng Ding,Rui Li,Xiongwen Zhang

In this paper, the hydrogen generation by the hydrolysis of solid sodium borohydride was studied. A novel NiCoP/RC catalyst that loads Ni, Co, and P complexes on resin carbon (RC) was prepared to accelerate the hydrolysis. The hydrogen generation rate, reaction temperature, hydrogen output and water-hydrogen ratio during the reaction were recorded. In comparison to the commonly used cobalt chloride catalyst, the NiCoP/RC catalyst demonstrated superior catalytic activity. Citric acid was used to neutralize the alkaline by-products, and while the mixture of NiCoP/RC catalyst and citric acid increased the hydrogen output, it resulted in lower water utilization rate. Therefore, intermittent water feeding from the bottom of the reactor was proposed, which was found to be beneficial in terms of both hydrogen output and water utilization. Finally, the study warns about the potential for thermal runaway during the hydrolysis reaction of solid sodium borohydride.

Three-dimensionally hierarchical NiCoP@PANI architecture for high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction

Jiawei Zhang,Yu Li,Zhe Wang,Yuqing Wang,Fan Wang,Minghua Chen

Ternary phosphides are attracting great attention in the field of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution and they have been verified to be highly active for water splitting. Herein, we developed polyaniline (PANI) coated nickel–cobalt metal phosphides nanowire arrays grown on nickel foam (NiCoP@PANI) as hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalysts. The appearance of PANI with excellent electric conductivity can accelerate H+ in electrolyte transfer into H2 and offer a masking layer to restrain the damage of electrode structural. Besides, the 3D porous structural of nickel foam can act as a skeleton to avoid electrode structure collapse and a channel for electron transfer. The optimized NiCoP@PANI can drive a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at low overpotential of 80.6 mV in 1 M KOH solution, and satisfactory electrochemical stability with unbroken structure and unchanged composition after electrochemical test.

Ultra-stable trimetallic phosphide heterostructure with regulated electronic structure for overall water splitting at high current densities

Daorui Wang,Xinruo Luo,Yuxiang Shang,Yuanyuan Wang,Haonan Zhang,Shuo Wang,Chenmeng Cui,Sungsik Lee,Shijie Hao,Ying Yang

Developing ultra-stable electrocatalysts for highly efficient overall water splitting at high current density (HCD) is critical for renewable hydrogen/oxygen production in the industry. However, the most active electrocatalysts for large current-driven water splitting are seriously handicapped by insufficient electrical contact kinetics due to the intensive bubble overflow. Herein, we demonstrate the ultra-stable trimetallic phosphides of NiFeP/NiCoP catalysts on a hydrophilic Ni foam skeleton via a corrosion-hydrothermal-phosphating strategy. The optimized NiFeP/NiCoP catalyst stabilizes for 600 h at −1 A cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution, and it only needs low overpotentials of 237 and 314 mV to drive HER and OER at 1 A cm −2 , respectively. As expected, the optimized NiFeP/NiCoP electrode maintains 1000 h at 0.5 A cm −2 for water splitting, ranking among the top performers among reported catalysts. Such excellent performance could be attributed to the fast electron transfer for electrochemical reactions , the electron-deficient Fe/Ni sites contribute to forming robust metal oxyhydroxide during OER, and electron-rich Co sites facilitate H adsorption during HER. The findings present a highly promising candidate for ultra-stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts , offering a viable option for hydrogen/oxygen supply for fuel cells and metal-air batteries .

NiCo-LDH@NiCoP composite as bifunctional catalyst exhibiting excellent full water splitting performance

Xiaoya Yuan,Yuan Yu,Dongfeng Sun,Jianlong Wen,Yanning Qu,Xiaodong Hao,Shukai Ding,Bingshe Xu

Transition metal phosphides, owing to their hydrogenase-like structure, are theoretically expected to exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance. However, in practice, their performance often falls short due to the phosphorus loss and the insufficient active sites in the electrochemical processes. In this study, the NiCo-LDH nanosheet coating was applied to the NiCoP nanorod array, which not only prevented the loss of phosphorus during electrochemical processes but also provided abundant active sites, thereby significantly enhancing its electrocatalytic performance. Specially The phosphorus mass loss in NiCoP was 8.3% during the electrochemical processes, whereas in the NiCo-LDH@NiCoP composite, it dropped to 1.12%.The as-prepared NiCo-LDH@NiCoP/NF composite exhibited excellent catalytic activity for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). At 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, its HER overpotentials was only 59 mV, very close to that of Pt/C (58 mV). However, when the current density exceeded 192 mA cm −2 , the HER performance of the NiCo-LDH@NiCoP/NF surpassed that of Pt/C catalyst, with the HER overpotentials being to 233 mV at 200 mA cm −2 and 260 mV at 300 mA cm −2 , significantly lower than those of the Pt/C catalyst (236 mV@200 mA cm −2 and 295 mV @ 300 mA cm −2 ). It also demonstrated excellent OER capability 1.0 M KOH, with an OER overpotential of merely 190 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , much lower than that of RuO 2 catalyst (260 mV). Consequently, the electrolytic cell structured with the bifunctional electrodes (NiCo-LDH@NiCoP/NF||NiCo-LDH@NiCoP/NF) required only 1.4 V@10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH for full water electrolysis, significantly outperforming that of the cell using full noble metal cell (1.51 V for Pt/C||RuO 2 ).

Multi-phase heterostructure of NiCoP/WP/Co2P4O12 for promoted alkaline hydrogen evolution activity

Liangjun Song,Ruiqian Li,Zhengye Yang,Zixian Zhu,Baorui Yuan,Tiancheng Ni,Cancan Chen,Huizhu Yu,Rencheng Jin

Developing economical electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution in alkaline electrolyte, which holds rapid kinetics and long-term durability, still remains a significant challenge. Herein, an original multi-phase heterostructure of NiCoP/WP/Co 2 P 4 O 12 derived from layered double hydroxide (LDH) was synthesized through hydrothermal reaction followed by phosphation treatment. It possesses a hollow nanoflower morphology and a large specific surface area, thereby leading to the exposure of abundant active sites. More importantly, three crystalline phases and amorphous state are present in the NiCoP/WP/Co 2 P 4 O 12 catalyst, which endows it with remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity. In particular, the HER performance of NiCoP/WP/Co 2 P 4 O 12 exhibits low overpotentials of 105 and 133 mV at current density of 50 and 100 mA cm −2 in alkaline electrolyte, respectively, which are lower than that of most reported transition-metal catalysts. Fast reaction kinetics-mediated by NiCoP/WP/Co 2 P 4 O 12 were achieved with the low Tafel slope of 62.5 mV dec −1 . Furthermore, the multi-phase heterostructured NiCoP/WP/Co 2 P 4 O 12 shows outstanding stability, as demonstrated by electrochemical cycling tests (10,000 cycles) and a prolonged chronoamperometric test lasting 83 h. This work not only sheds new light on the HER mechanism of heterostructured electrocatalysts, but also paves the way for the rational design of non-precious and earth-rich electrocatalysts with remarkable HER catalytic activity for practical applications.
