Carbon Coated and Nitrogen Doped Hierarchical NiMo-Based Electrocatalysts with High Activity and Durability for Efficient Borohydride Oxidation

Baoying He,Shuxian Zhuang,Xuefeng Tai,Jinpeng Zhang,Ao Xie,Linting Cheng,Peng Song,Yang Tang,Yongmei Chen,Pingyu Wan

Sodium borohydride is a promising candidate as hydrogen storage material. The direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) as an energy conversation device has attracted intensive attention owing to the low theoretical potential of borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR, −1.24 V vs SHE) on the anode. In this paper, the hierarchical sea urchin-like NiMoN@NC coated by thin carbon layer with optimal BH4– adsorption characteristic was synthesized as a superior electrocatalyst toward BOR. In 1 M NaOH-0.05 M NaBH4, the BOR working potentials are only −55 and 44 mV at the current densities of 10 and 200 mA cm–2 on NiMoN@NC, respectively. Furthermore, the membrane-free DBFC using NiMoN@NC as anodic electrocatalyst shows a maximum power density of 67 mW cm–2 at room temperature with appreciative stability. This well-designed carbon coated and nitrogen doped transition-metal material with hierarchical nano/microstructure as a highly efficient electrocatalyst shows promising potential and bright prospects in electrocatalysis research and practical application for energy conversion systems of DBFC.

Catalytic hydrogenation of stearic acid over reduced NiMo catalysts: Structure–activity relationship and effect of the hydrogen-donor

Shilei Ding,Zhixia Li,Fuwei Li,Zhaohe Wang,Jiangfeng Li,Tingting Zhao,Hongfei Lin,Congjin Chen

Reduced NiMo catalysts were prepared by loading NiMo elements on a γ-Al 2 O 3 -β-zeolite composite support, followed by reduction with hydrogen at temperatures in the range of 400–600°C. The hydrogenation activities were investigated through treatment of stearic acid (SA), and were compared with those obtained with the composite support and the oxidized NiMo catalyst (Cox). In the tested reduction temperature range, the catalyst reduced at 450°C (T450) achieved the highest conversion (close to 100%) and C18 hydrocarbon selectivity (58.0%), which were much higher than the results obtained over the composite support and Cox. Reduction treatment contributed to production of more reducible metal species and improvement of the dispersity of metal active sites, consequently leading to high hydrodeoxygenation activity. Furthermore, the effects of H 2 pressure and the hydrogen-donor (tetralin) on the catalytic activity of T450 were investigated. Higher H 2 pressures promoted SA conversion and C18 selectivity. In contrast with dodecane as a solvent, tetralin significantly promoted the formation of C18 in a H 2 atmosphere, but improved the production of C17 and suppressed the formation of lighter hydrocarbons (≤C16) in a N 2 atmosphere. This is associated with the hydrogen-donating activity of tetralin.

In-situ growth of Ni2.86Te2 and Mo6Te8 telluride catalysts on foam NiMo substrates for enhanced oxygen evolution performance

Wei Yang,Wenbin Wang,Sha Deng,Qingyun Ji,Yunlong Guo,Tao Long

Non precious metal materials have attracted much attention in oxygen evolution reactions (OER) due to their abundant reserves and low cost. However, due to their thermodynamic instability, they typically exhibit high reaction barriers, poor stability, and fewer active sites. In response to this challenge, this paper studied the in-situ growth of Ni 2.86 Te 2 and Mo 6 Te 8 multiphase telluride catalysts on foam nickel molybdenum (NM) substrates, and revealed their excellent catalytic performance in OER. The research results show that the catalyst has an overpotential of 300 mV and a Tafel slope of 78.61 mV·dec −1 at a current density of 20 mA cm −2 , and its performance is comparable to that of the precious metal catalyst RuO 2 . After 60 h of electrolysis, the catalyst showed no significant deactivation and exhibited good stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicate that the electronic coupling between Ni 2.86 Te 2 and Mo 6 Te 8 enhances charge transfer, reduces the energy barrier of the rate determining step (RDS), and the abundant active sites on local atomic doping on the surface significantly enhance OER activity, providing new ideas for developing highly active and stable non precious metal catalysts for oxygen evolution.

Controllable assembly of NiMo nano-wool shell on zeolite Y and its advanced behavior of hydrodesulfurization toward dibenzothiophene

Xiaoqian Li,Shenyong Ren,Lu Liu,Chi Yang

A core-shell structured USY-xTT@NiMo catalyst was prepared through thermal treatment method and evaluated for the catalytic hydrodesulfurization (HDS) performance toward dibenzothiophene (DBT). The shell assembled from NiMoS nano-wool provided abundant active site. This nano-wool morphology and core-shell structure resulted in the catalyst with enhanced specific surface area, pore volume, lower interaction between the support and active metals, and facilitated metal dispersion. In addition, the nano-wool morphology and core-shell structure also promoted the degree of sulfurization and provided more sulfur vacancies, which enhanced the HDS performance of the corresponding catalysts. An efficient USY-16TT@NiMo catalyst with shorter slab lengths (average 2.50 nm), higher average stacking number (3.37 layers), and more edge active sites was assembled, which showed superior k HDS value of DBT up to 8.29 × 10 −4  mol g −1  h −1 and high direct desulfurization selectivity to be 88 %.

Promoting electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol to formate through interfacial interaction in NiMo oxide-CoMo oxide mixture-derived catalysts

Yanbin Qi,Yihua Zhu,Hongliang Jiang,Chunzhong Li

Designing efficient, stable, and easily scaled-up catalysts for nucleophile oxidation reactions (NOR) is a key step in promoting the industrial application of NOR. Here, a simple physical mixing strategy is adopted to prepare a mixture of NiMo oxide and CoMo oxide as catalyst for methanol electrocatalytic oxidation reaction (MOR). The mixture exhibits high catalytic activity for MOR and its performance far exceeds that of a single component. The interaction at the contact interface between nickel and cobalt components is clarified through operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, in-situ Raman spectroscopy, and a series of electrochemical tests. The interfacial interaction enhances the charge transport and promotes the formation of electrophilic OH* species, which significantly boosts the methanol oxidation reaction. This work provides a new idea for the design of efficient and easily scaled-up catalysts for nucleophile oxidation reactions.

NiMo/C-HY catalyst prepared from doping zeolite slurry in a superabsorbent polymer for DBT and 4,6-DMDBT hydrodesulfurization

Zhiheng Wang,Yanyan Liu,Xin Li,Ruiyao Gao,Jiong Sun,Jiankun Liu,Songdong Yao

This study utilized the swelling properties of superabsorbent polymers (SAP) to adsorb zeolite sols and slurries to construct C-HY composites. The synthesized C-HY composites proved to be effective supports for NiMo catalysts in the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of dibenzothiophene ( DBT ) and 4,6-dimethyl-dibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT). XRD , BET, SEM, TG, NH 3 -TPD, FTIR, H 2 -TPR, TEM and XPS were used to characterization the texutural structure, acidity and metal distribution of prepared NiMo/C-HY catalysts. By combining zeolite slurries with SAPs, HY can be efficiently incorporated into carbon substrate structure in three dimensions (3D), thereby changing the structural characteristics, morphology, acidity, and metal distribution of HDS catalysts. The conversion of DBT decreases sequentially: NiMo/C-HY-s > NiMo/C-HY-h > NiMo/C-HY-p > NiMo/C-HY-c, and the conversion of 4,6-DMDBT decreased sequentially: NiMo/C-HY-s > NiMo/C-HY-p > NiMo/C-HY-h ≫ NiMo/C-HY-c. The introduction of HY into the carbon support can increase the HDS reaction rate of NiMo/C by more than 1.2–1.5 times. The intrinsic reaction activity of NiMo/C-HY-s can even exceed that of traditional NiMo/Al 2 O 3 catalysts. Based on the same Mo loading amount, the HDS activity of NiMo/C-HY-s is twice that of NiMo/Al 2 O 3 in DBT HDS and 1.1–1.5 times that of NiMo/Al 2 O 3 in 4,6-DMDBT HDS. It is thought that HY in carbon composites promotes C–S bond cleavage of sulfur-containing molecules in DBT HDS. The unique dispersion of Mo species induced by HY favors the formation of highly stacked NiMoS active phases, which may be the crucial in 4,6-DMDBT HDS.

Nanosponge-like Solid Solution of NiMo with a High Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Performance over a Wide Range of Current Densities

Pengfei Shang,Zhiguo Ye,Yi Ding,Zhixiang Zhu,Xinyuan Peng,Guang Ma,Duosheng Li

Owing to unstable electrical energy generation from intermittent solar and wind energy sources, the development of efficient and durable nonnoble electrocatalysts is extremely desirable, in particular, those that can be used over a wide range of current densities for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), especially >1 A cm–2, which is extremely desirable for energy transformation in power systems. Here, a nanosponge-like NiMo solid solution based on a nanoscale Kirkendall effect is fabricated via a one-step high-temperature sintering method. A polycrystalline layer of NiMo oxyhydroxide is formed on the surface of the as-prepared electrode after aging, thus achieving a low overpotential and Tafel slope of 37 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and 39.2 mV dec–1, respectively. The electrode displays superior electrochemical stability over a wide range of current densities without compromising its electrocatalytic activity; in particular, it is durable for over 300 h at 2 A cm–2. This is attributed to the combination of the 3D-interconnected nanosponge structure, synergistic effect between the Ni and Mo species, lattice distortion of the solid solution, and its high conductivity. This work provides a possible commercialization for the fabrication of nonprecious electrocatalysts with high performance in large-scale energy conversion.

In Situ Fabrication of the Al2O3@NiMo Core–Shell Catalyst from LDH for Low-Pressure Hydrodeoxygenation of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester

Shudong Wang,Yuhan Cui,Chenxi Zhao,Changhai Liang,Chuang Li

The hydrothermal stability of supported metal catalysts is one of the greatest challenges in the development of biomass conversion to chemicals and fuels. Herein, a hydrotalcite-based core–shell catalyst (Al2O3@NiMo-LDO) was synthesized by urea precipitation and ion-exchange methods, which could selectively convert bio-oil model compounds to liquid alkanes with high activity and selectivity and excellent hydrothermal stability at low pressure. In the hydrogenation of methyl palmitate, the catalyst afforded 81% conversion and 99% selectivity of n-pentadecane and n-hexadecane under low pressure, with excellent hydrothermal stability. The excellent catalytic performance of Al2O3@NiMo-LDO was attributed to the strong hydrogen activation ability, improvement of the utilization of active components under low pressure, and the increase in the number of active Mo5+ species. The superior hydrothermal stability was attributed to the core–shell structure, which avoided the influence of the specific surface area of Al2O3 that is reduced by the hydration reaction between Al2O3 and H2O at high temperature.

Facet-engineered NiMo-MoO2 heterostructure with enhanced built-in electric field for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis at industrial-grade current density

Yindong Wang,Jinshan Han,Anran Xie,Jianbing Zhu,Chengji Zhao

A novel facet-engineered NiMo-MoO 2 catalyst (Fac/NiMo/NF) was synthesized. • Fac/NiMo/NF shows a low overpotential of 119 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to reach 1 A cm −2 . • Fac/NiMo/NF delivers a low cell voltage of 2 V at 80 ℃ to reach 5.2 A cm −2 in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). • Fac/NiMo/NF catalyst demonstrates excellent durability for 2000 h in AEMWE at industrial-grade current density (2 A cm −2 ). Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is emerging as a promising technology for green hydrogen production. However, the synthesis of efficient noble metal-free catalysts remains a critical challenge. Herein, we report a heterointerface-enabled NiMo-MoO 2 (−101) catalyst (Fac/NiMo/NF) synthesized via an electrostatic adsorption strategy, in which the MoO 2 component preferentially exposes the (−101) facet instead of the conventional (−111) facet. This facet-selective exposure fundamentally reconstructs the interface configuration and substantially increases work function difference across the NiMo-MoO 2 heterointerface. The resulting strong built-in electric field promotes interfacial charge redistribution and accelerates hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics. Moreover, the NiMo-MoO 2 (−101) heterointerface promotes water dissociation, thereby accelerating the Volmer step and enhancing the HER activity. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the NiMo-MoO 2 (−101) possesses optimal hydrogen adsorption, accounting for its superior activity. The AEMWE assembled with Fac/NiMo/NF as the cathode exhibits a current density of 5.2 A cm −2 at 2 V and demonstrates excellent durability for 2000 h at an industrial-grade current density of 2 A cm −2 . This work highlights that integrating facet engineering with heterointerface design offers an effective strategy for developing durable, high-performance self-supported electrodes for practical water electrolysis. Coupled compressive-tensile stains boosting both activity and durability of NiMo electrode for alkaline water/seawater hydrogen evolution at high current densities

Liyang Xiao,Tiantian Yang,Chuanqi Cheng,Xiwen Du,Yao Zhao,Zhanwei Liu,Xueru Zhao,Jingtong Zhang,Miao Zhou,Chunyan Han,Shuzhi Liu,Yunsong Zhao,Yanhan Yang,Hui Liu,Cunku Dong,Jing Yang

The development of NiMo-based electrode with superior activity and durability at high current densities to meet industrial requirements for hydrogen production in alkaline water/seawater still remains a great challenge. Herein, an edge dislocation strain-boosted Ni 3 Mo integrated electrode (D-Ni 3 Mo/NF) is reported. The remarkable coupled tensile-compressive strain effect induced by dense edge dislocations not only inhibits oxidative dissolution of Mo from Ni 3 Mo in alkaline electrolyte, but also simultaneously optimizes the electronic structure of dual active sites (Ni and Mo), which boost both durability and activity of D-Ni 3 Mo in catalyzing alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Consequently, D-Ni 3 Mo/NF only requires overpotentials as low as 15 and 232 mV to achieve 10 and 1000 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, respectively, and exhibits ultralong-term stability for 200 h at 500 mA cm −2 , outperforming most of recently reported NiMo-based catalysts. It also shows distinguished HER activity in seawater electrolysis with superior stability at 500 mA cm −2 .
