Efficient urea-assisted water electrolysis at 1500 mA cm−2 for 1100 h over in-situ produced active NiOOH species

Jiaxing Lu,Guangfu Qian,Yihao Xu,Guorong Wang,Yuan Yao,Ruyu Zhang,Jinli Chen,Panagiotis Tsiakaras

Lignin-derived carbon-encapsulated heterojunction promotes in-situ NiOOH formation. • Self-Supported nanoarchitecture enables mass transfer and mechanical robustness. • Lignin-derived carbon-encapsulated improves corrosion resistance. • LC@FeNi 3 /Ni 2 V 2 O 7 stable operates for 1100 h at 1500 mA cm −2 . Although Ni-based catalysts hold promise for replacing the oxygen evolution reaction with the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) in water electrolysis to energy-saving hydrogen production, their activity and long-term stability require further improvement. Herein, we developed a self-supported catalyst composed of lignin-derived carbon (LC) encapsulating a FeNi 3 /Ni 2 V 2 O 7 heterojunction (LC@FeNi 3 /Ni 2 V 2 O 7 ) to tackle these challenges. LC@FeNi 3 /Ni 2 V 2 O 7 requires low potentials of 1.22 V and 1.39 V at 10 and 1000 mA cm −2 . According to operando analysis, the UOR follows an indirect mechanism on the LC@FeNi 3 /Ni 2 V 2 O 7 surface. This reaction pathway is facilitated by the synergy between the lignin-derived carbon and the heterointerfaces, which promotes the generation of active NiOOH species and enables a lower potential than catalysts without these components. In addition, the self-supporting structure ensures efficient gas-liquid release, while the carbon layer enhances corrosion resistance, allowing it to achieve a current density of 1.5 A cm −2 at only 1.84 V under non- membrane electrode assembly conditions, with a potential decay of only 100 mV over 1100 h, demonstrating its potential for commercial applications. This work presents not only an efficient UOR catalyst but also a novel strategy for engineering lignin-derived carbon materials to achieve industrial-scale urea-assisted water electrolysis. Ce-doped NiOOH coupled with Ni nanocrystals endowing high-current-density water oxidation on iron-free catalysts

Mingzhe Li,Yunlong Wang,Xin Zhang,Lei Zhou,Fengchun Zheng,Kepi Chen,Nian Ran,Yuzhen Lv,Wei Zhou

Developing iron-free transition-metal based catalysts to overcome ion-leaching degradation is still a critical challenge due to their inherent low activity and poor electron transfer characteristics for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, an iron-free catalytic material integrating amorphous Ce-doped NiOOH with Ni nanocrystals was synthesized via a one-step electrodeposition method, achieving scalable fabrication of a uniform anode over 600 cm 2 . It shows remarkably low overpotentials of 190 mV and 332 mV to achieve 10 and 1000 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. Moreover, it maintains 98.7 % activity retention after 1000 h of continuous operation at 1000 mA cm −2 . XPS, XANES, in-situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that Ni nanocrystals significantly enhance the interfacial and bulk charge transport in NiOOH, while Ce doping substantially promotes both the pre-oxidation process and OER kinetics. This work provides insights for designing iron-free catalytic materials with high alkaline OER performance.

Tuning the eg∗ band broadening of the in-situ NiOOH by W doping for efficient biomass electrooxidation

Jinlv Wei,Jianlong Zhang,Huan Wen,Zhixiang Zhai,Fangyuan Guan,Zelong Sun,Jia Wu,Shibin Yin

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation reaction (HMFOR) provides a promising route for producing high-value-added compounds. It is generally believed that NiOOH is the active species in HMFOR process, but its inherently poor electron transfer ability leads to limited catalytic activity. In this work, a W doping strategy is adopted to regulate the electron transfer between NiOOH and reaction molecules. Electrochemical results show that W-doped Ni 5 P 4 -R exhibits excellent electrochemical performance for the oxidation of HMF to FDCA with the conversion of HMF and yield of FDCA both close to ∼100%. Density functional theory and in-situ characterization reveal that the introduction of W causes the distortion of NiOOH lattice, resulting in the Jahn-Teller distortion and the elimination of orbital degeneracy, thereby broadening the e g ∗ band of NiOOH. This feature is beneficial for the electron transfer between W-doped NiOOH and HMF (1.31 e − ), thereby promoting the C–H bond activation of the aldehyde group in HMF and effectively reducing the energy barrier of rate-determining step (RDS).

NiCoP/NiOOH nanoflowers loaded on ultrahigh porosity Co foam for hydrogen evolution reaction under large current density

Yuantao Pei,Liang Huang,Lei Han,Haijun Zhang,Longhao Dong,Quanli Jia,Shaowei Zhang

Developing user-friendly electrodes for efficiently producing hydrogen from water to substitute non-renewable fossil fuels is one of the challenges in the hydrogen energy field. For the first time, we have prepared self-supporting ultrahigh porosity cobalt foam loaded with NiCoP/NiOOH nanoflowers (NiCoP/CF) via freeze-drying and phosphorization. The as-prepared hierarchical NiCoP/CF electrodes showed superior catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. The one resulted from phosphorization at 350 °C (NiCoP/CF-350) only required overpotential of −47, and −126 mV to deliver geometrical current density of −10 mA cm −2 and −100 mA cm −2 , respectively, demonstrating improved catalytic activity than the electrodes prepared using a commercial nickel foam as a support. Moreover, it could retain its superior stability at a current density higher than −500 mA cm −2 for 16 h. Such an outstanding performance can be attributed to the ultrahigh porosity of Co foam support, optimal adsorption energies of HER intermediates (H∗), facile water dissociation on the NiCoP/NiOOH hetero-interfaces, and the assistance of NiOOH facilitating the electrons transfer from the Co foam inside to the NiCoP outside. The work would provide a new strategy for future design of advanced HER electrocatalysts.

Ni(OH)2/NiOOH nanonetwork-modified non-enzymatic integrated electrochemical sensor for urea detection in swimming pool water

Lei Jiang,Chunli Mao,Gaojie Cheng,Hongbo Yang,Jiawen Yin,Qinghui Jin

An integrated three-electrode non-enzymatic urea sensor is developed. • The sensor exhibits a wide linear range (1–200 mg/L) and a fast response (10.8 s). • Detection potential dynamically regulates the contributions of the two urea oxidation pathways. Rapid and accurate monitoring of urea concentration in swimming pool water is critical for protecting swimmers' health and optimizing water quality management. However, traditional techniques are either expensive or operationally complex, whereas enzyme-based sensors suffer from enzyme deactivation, limiting their applicability for online monitoring. In this paper, a nickel hydroxide/nickel oxyhydroxide (Ni(OH) 2 /NiOOH) nanonetwork electrochemical sensor for non-enzymatic urea detection is proposed, which is mass-produced on a platinum electrode using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). The electrode was activated and optimized via cyclic voltammetry by varying the scan rate. The sensor demonstrates a high sensitivity of 1.43 μA/(mg·L −1 ·cm 2 ), a wide detection range of 1–200 mg/L, a fast response time (<12 s), good repeatability with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.24%, and an excellent linearity ( R 2  = 0.9988). In addition, the proposed sensor exhibits excellent anti-interference performance toward coexisting species such as creatinine, uric acid, residual chlorine, and lactic acid. Practical applications in swimming pool water samples yielded recovery rates of 92.5–100.4%, validating the sensor's robustness. Two distinct oxidation mechanisms for urea on the electrode were observed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The direct pathway was further found to be potential-tunable, with its charge-transfer resistance decreasing by 35.6% upon raising the working potential from 0.45 V to 0.50 V. This work offers a promising route toward non-enzymatic urea sensors for swimming pool water monitoring. Download: Download high-res image (140KB) Download: Download full-size image

Ceria-Promoted Reconstruction of Ni-Based Electrocatalysts toward Efficient Oxygen Evolution

Zinan Huang,Xianping Liao,Wenbiao Zhang,Jialai Hu,Qingsheng Gao

Modulating the dynamic change of catalysts is significant for understanding the mechanism and exploiting better electrocatalysts but remains challenging in oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, ceria-promoted reconstruction of Ni-X (X = S, P, and O) is investigated to unravel the correlation between the reconstructed surface and the OER performance, which further guides the design of prominent electrocatalysts. Interfacial CeO2 promotes the in situ reconfiguration of Ni-X via strengthening hydroxyl adsorption, generating highly active CeO2-NiOOH interfaces. Moreover, rich oxygen vacancies formed after breaking Ni-S/P bonds and leaching S/P anions render Ni3S2 and Ni2P superior to NiO with the same CeO2 modification, highlighting another dependence on pre-catalyst materials chemistry. Theoretical analysis further confirms that the co-presence of CeO2-NiOOH interfaces and oxygen vacancies can harmoniously regulate intermediate chemisorption toward favorable OER kinetics. As a proof of concept, CeO2-modified Ni3S2 exhibits low overpotentials of 251 and 364 mV at the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH, respectively, performing among the best of recently reported Ni-based counterparts.

Enhancement in the photoelectrochemical performance of BiVO4 photoanode with high (0 4 0) facet exposure

Xinxin Lu,Jingran Xiao,Lingling Peng,Liwen Zhang,Guowu Zhan

Morphology and geometrical dimensions play crucial roles in the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) for water splitting. Decahedral BiVO 4 was synthesized through a facile hydrothermal process, which exhibited superior charge injection efficiency to the nanoporous counterpart prepared by the traditional method. More importantly, the crystal size and facet proportion of BiVO 4 decahedrons were facilely controlled. The charge separation efficiency can be significantly improved with a reduction in the crystal size and an increase in (0   4   0) facet exposure. A new method was developed for rate law analysis: illumination intensity-modulated oxygen evolution reaction rate versus open circuit potential difference, which suggested that the surface reaction kinetics was not affected by facet regulation. Furthermore, after decorating the FeOOH and NiOOH as dual oxygen evolution cocatalysts, an enhanced photocurrent density of 3.2 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode and interfacial charge injection efficiency of 97.0% can be reached. Our work inspires the development of facet-regulated BiVO 4 photoanodes with high charge injection efficiency in the PEC field and provides a feasible route to enhance its charge separation efficiency.

Efficient Charge Transfer and Bubble Traffic in Nanosheet/Nanowire Catalysts Enable High-Rate Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Feng Gu,Jie Wang,Jie Wu,Xiang Tian,Xian Zhang,Zhiguang Guo

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) shows great potential for sustainable hydrogen production, but its deployment is hindered by insufficient charge/mass transfer at electrode–electrolyte interfaces. Herein, we report a distinctive heterostructure featuring NiOOH nanosheets with Ru doping immobilized on NiMoSx (RuNiOOH/NiMoSx) to address this challenge. Theoretical predictions and experimental results demonstrate that the charge redistribution in the RuNiOOH/NiMoSx heterostructure downshifts the Ru d-band center, thereby optimizing H* binding strength and the unique heterostructure provides a multitude of accessible active sites and three-dimensional (3D) mass transport channels, synergistically facilitating H2O adsorption and bubble desorption. Such optimized bubble dynamics ensure rapid active-site regeneration and sustained catalytic activity. As a consequence, the RuNiOOH/NiMoSx electrode exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, delivering current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm–2 at overpotentials of 5.4 and 136.2 mV, respectively, while maintaining outstanding stability over 100 h at 100 mA cm–2. Furthermore, RuNiOOH/NiMoSx-based practical alkaline water electrolyzer drives 1.0 A cm–2 at a cell voltage of just 1.75 V for over 24 h without degradation. The present research delivers a new design paradigm for advanced heterostructured catalysts.

Hierarchical Ni3S2-NiOOH hetero-nanocomposite grown on nickel foam as a noble-metal-free electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolyte

Xiuxiu Wang,Renpin Liu,Yan Zhang,Lingxing Zeng,Aihua Liu

It is a challenge to explore inexpensive noble-metal-free catalysts with long-term stability at low overpotential for water electrolysis to produce hydrogen. Herein, we constructed hierarchical Ni 3 S 2 -NiOOH hetero-nanocomposite on nickel foam (NF@Ni 3 S 2 -NiOOH) through a two-step hydrothermal and electrodeposition method. The as-prepared NF@Ni 3 S 2 -NiOOH catalyst was capable of catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction effectively with a low overpotential of 160 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 in 1.0 M NaOH, and maintained excellent performance for 45 h without obvious attenuation.

Hydroxyl-assisted proton migration and interfacial electron transfer over Ni(OH)2/NiOOH for low-energy CO2 desorption from phase-change absorbent

Xiao Zhang,XuChen Guo,Xueying Zhang,Yunyi Ge,Feng Shen,Boxiong Shen

Integrating phase-change absorption with catalytic desorption offers a promising strategy for low-energy amine-based CO 2 capture; however, catalytic desorption of the CO 2 -rich phase in phase-change absorbents remains challenging because the highly enriched ionic products hinder product activation, proton transfer, and interfacial mass transport. Herein, a Ni(OH) 2 /NiOOH catalyst with an open layered nanosheet structure, abundant surface hydroxyl groups, and interlayer water was developed and applied to both our previously reported phase-change absorbent and a 30 wt% aqueous MEA system. The catalyst increased the maximum CO 2 desorption rate by 40% in the phase-change system and by 43% in the aqueous MEA system, while reducing the relative heat duty by 32.9% in the phase-change system, demonstrating efficient catalytic desorption performance and good cross-system applicability. Structural and mechanistic analyses reveal that the open nanosheet architecture shortens diffusion pathways and improves active-site accessibility, while surface hydroxyl groups and interlayer water construct a hydrogen-bond network for proton migration. Meanwhile, the Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ interface promotes interfacial electron transfer, enhances carbamate polarization, and weakens the C N bond. These effects synergistically facilitate carbamate decomposition and protonated amine deprotonation, providing new insights into catalyst design for low-energy CO 2 capture.

A biomimetic structural strategy employing needle-like NiOOH anchored cu-doped nickel‑iron-based electrocatalysts for efficient and stable overall water splitting

Chenan Xu,Wenbo Liao,Mei Xue,Dongwei Ao,Lan Mu,Gang Zhao,Renxiang He,Yuxin Dai,Baojie Zhang

Developing a cost-effective and high-performance electrocatalyst for efficient water splitting is crucial for the sustainable production of green hydrogen. In this study, a self-supported three-dimensional hierarchical needle-sheet heterostructured bifunctional electrocatalyst NiOOH/NiFeCu x was designed. First, copper (Cu) was doped into nickel‑iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) using a simple hydrothermal method. The trace amount of Cu doping enhanced the electrical conductivity while effectively preventing transient electrochemical dissolution of the Cu during reactions in alkaline solutions. Then, the nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) nanoneedle array was anchored onto the surface of NiFeCu x , constructing a dogail grass-like needle-sheet biomimetic structure to significantly increase and optimize the accessible active surface area. The results demonstrate that NiOOH/NiFeCu 0.2 delivers outstanding performance in 1 M KOH, exhibiting optimal overpotentials of 224.7 ± 2.1 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction and 137.0 ± 2.0 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction, alongside stable activity after 40 h of continuous operation. When employed as both the anode and cathode for overall water splitting, it achieves a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a minimal cell voltage of 1.598 V and maintains stability for over 80 h at 100 mA cm −2 . This study offers a promising strategy for the development of low-cost, high-efficiency electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Interfacial synergy between Ru³ ⁺-doped NiOOH lattice and surface Ru nanoparticles: Unveiling hydrogen spillover pathways for high current density alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Huiluan Qin,Liang Luo,Qi Shen,Penglei Xu,Song Lu,Yeqing Wang,Jiadi Ying,Tiancun Liu,Min Guo,Wenna Huang,Kun Guo,Chun Chen,Guozhong Wang,Zhixin Yu

The development of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts operating under high current densities is critical for advancing industrial water electrolysis toward green hydrogen production. Herein, we report an ultra-stable hierarchical electrocatalyst Ru/(Ni 1- x Ru x )OOH on anodized nickel mesh (ANM) via a facile two-step anodization-substitution strategy. The catalyst features dual Ru active sites: lattice-doped Ru 3 + within the NiOOH framework and surface-deposited metallic Ru nanoparticles (NPs), supported by a hierarchical porous architecture derived from anodization. The optimized Ru/(Ni 1- x Ru x )OOH catalyst exhibits exceptional alkaline HER activity, with a low overpotential of 81 mV at 100 mA cm −2 . More importantly, it shows remarkable stability at a large current density of 1 A cm −2 for 500 h with a current decay rate of 0.1 mV h −1 , outperforming most of the state-of-the-art HER electrocatalysts. In situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that Ru 3+ doping modulates the electronic environment of NiOOH lattice O atoms, which accelerate H 2 O dissociation and generate H* intermediates adsorbed on O sites (*H-O). Thereafter, H* spills over to adjacent Ru NPs via Ni-O-Ru bonds, forming adsorbed *H-Ru 0 intermediates. These *H-Ru 0 species then accept electrons from Ni, which drives their recombination into H 2 . Additionally, weakly hydrogen-bonded interfacial water (2-HB-H 2 O and free-H 2 O) ensures a continuous supply of reactant to the active sites. This work provides a strategy for designing Ni-based electrocatalysts with tailored active sites and hierarchical structures, advancing alkaline water electrolysis at industrial-level current densities.
