A “MOF-Protective-Pyrolysis” Strategy for the Preparation of Fe–N–C Catalysts and the Role of Fe, N, and C in the Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Acidic Medium

Yinling Wang,Juan Wang,Dandan Wei,Maoguo Li

M–N–C electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have been considered as the most promising alternatives to precious metal catalysts. However, the catalytic activity of M–N–C especially in an acidic medium is still unable to meet the practical requirement, and the corresponding ORR mechanism also remains unclear. Herein, an “MOF-protective-pyrolysis” strategy was adopted to synthesize an Fe–N–C catalyst (P-FeMOF@ZIF-8) with Fe–N4 as the predominant Fe species. The P-FeMOF@ZIF-8 displays high catalytic activity in both acidic and alkaline mediums. The experimental results further reveal the different importance of the Fe species in different mediums. Based on the results, a distinct mechanism of the ORR the in acidic medium was proposed, where the synergistic effect of the Fe–N4 site and carbon in improving the kinetics of the ORR were well explained. The findings and the corresponding perspective may provide a new guidance for the design of highly efficient ORR electrocatalysts.

Copper coordinated with nitrogen in electrospun carbon nanofibers as a high-performance electrocatalyst for ORR

Feng Yan,Liang Dong,Jinquan Su,Xin Liu,Xiumei Han,Jianbing Zang,Yanhui Wang

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted much attention in the field of oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) as a result of their high selectivity and effective atom utilization. Cu SACs are particularly difficult to prepare since copper is prone to agglomeration, which leads to the formation of metal particles. In this study, using sodium copper chlorophyllin (SCC) as an organometallic copper source, carbon nanofibers incorporating Cu-N 4 structures were prepared using electrospinning technology. This new type of Cu SAC has a huge surface area (1005.615 m 2 ·g) and a 3D network structure, which are conducive to the exposure of more active sites as well as to electron conduction and material transport. Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy revealed that the Cu-N 4 structure was preserved in the electrocatalyst, and was responsible for the catalytic activity towards the ORR. The Cu–N-CNFs exhibited higher catalytic activity and greater stability than commercial Pt/C in an alkaline medium, suggesting the possibility of using Cu SACs to replace commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts.

Nitrogen doped and phosphorus doped thin graphene spherical shells as efficient metal-free ORR catalysts

Fuqiang Duan,Mengyu Lu,Guangrun Ren,Jifa Mei,Xiaoli Qiu,Weiran Jiang,Hao Liu,Guangwu Yang

Developing efficient, metal-free electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential for advancing sustainable energy technologies. In this work, we report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped (N-GS) and phosphorus-doped (P-GS) graphene spherical shells as highperformance, non-metallic ORR catalysts. N-GS was directly synthesized via chemical vapor deposition using acetonitrile as a dual carbon and nitrogen source, while P-GS was prepared 2 through post-phosphorylation of undoped graphene shells. Elemental analysis confirmed nitrogen and phosphorus doping levels of 8.59 at% and 2.80 at%, respectively. The threedimensional spherical architecture effectively prevents graphene sheet aggregation and increases accessible surface area. Heteroatom doping introduces lattice distortions and defect sites, which enhance ORR activity. Both N-GS and P-GS exhibited half-wave potentials close to that of commercial Pt/C (0.82 V), and superior kinetics with Tafel slopes of 70 and 75 mV dec -1 , respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed low charge transfer resistance, and Koutecky-Levich analysis confirmed a four-electron ORR pathway for both materials. These results demonstrate that heteroatom-doped graphene shells are promising metal-free catalysts for ORR, offering a cost-effective alternative to precious metal-based catalysts in fuel cell applications.

Mass-ratio-regulated Co3O4/α-MnO2/C heterostructured catalyst for ORR in Zn–air batteries

Ying Li,Fangyuan Qiu,Wanyou Huang,Xuesong Tian,Limei Wang,Ruixia Chu,Hang Li,Yibo Gao

Developing low-cost, high-performing non-noble-metal catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to replace Pt-based catalysts for practical metal-air batteries remains an enormous challenge. Herein, Co 3 O 4 /α-MnO 2 /C composite catalysts with different mass ratios are synthesized, and a heterostructured Co 3 O 4 /α-MnO 2 /C catalyst is successfully constructed. Benefiting from the synergistic interaction between Co 3 O 4 and α-MnO 2 , together with the enhanced conductivity imparted by the carbon support, the catalyst exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity. Furthermore, derivative analysis of the LSV curves is employed to accurately determine the ORR onset potential and half-wave potential, providing a quantitative approach for evaluating the electrochemical activity of the Co 3 O 4 /α-MnO 2 /C catalyst. Furthermore, a Zn-air battery driven by the Co 3 O 4 /α-MnO 2 /C catalyst shows excellent electrochemical performance, delivering a high open-circuit voltage of 1.458 V and long-term cycling stability for 300 h. Notably, its overall performance is close to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. This work highlights the considerable promise of non-noble-metal catalysts for renewable energy storage and conversion applications.

Symmetry distortion engineering single-atom catalysts: Exceptional ORR activity and ultra-stable Zn-air batteries

Zhenghao Chen,Tsung-Cheng Yang,Chia-Min Yang,Cheng Bao,Zeyi Jiang,Shiqing Deng,Nien-Chu Lai

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts are crucial components in next-generation energy storage systems, such as high-energy–density Zn-air batteries (ZABs), as they serve as performance-determining process in devices. However, current ORR catalysts still face significant challenges that hinder their practical applications: Pt/C catalysts incur high costs due to reliance on noble metals, while non-noble metal-based systems often struggle with low activity and stability. In this study, a novel non-noble Fe-N 4 single-atom catalyst, FeN4ClPO, coordinated by both an axial Cl ligand and a long-range P-O ligand was designed and synthesized. The high-coordination FeN4ClPO catalyst achieves performance surpassing Pt/C catalysts, with a remarkable half-wave potential (0.903 V), a peak power density of 179.6 mW/cm 2 , and exceptional durability lasting up to 300 h. This performance is driven by our broadly applicable synergistic coordination strategy, which efficiently and precisely tunes regulated the electron density distribution, d -orbital energy levels, and spin state of the Fe center. Moreover, A flexible solid-state ZAB was constructed with the FeN4ClPO catalyst, exhibiting excellent foldability and cycle stability. These findings provide a feasible approach for the design of efficient catalysts in high-energy and high-safety rechargeable batteries.

High-entropy spinel oxides as efficient ORR catalysts towards enhanced kinetics for zinc-air batteries

Wolong Li,Yong Wang,Na Xu,Yongcun Li

Efficient oxygen electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are vital for energy conversion and storage devices, but slow kinetics remain a significant challenge. There is an urgent need to develop a new electrocatalyst with high active sites. Here, we report the synthesis of high-entropy spinel oxide ((FeMnNiCuCr) 3 O 4 ) loaded onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) via a co-precipitation hydrothermal method. The multi-elemental mechanism of high-entropy spinel oxide and the role of rGO in enhancing catalytic activity are elucidated. The prepared electrocatalyst demonstrates efficient ORR catalytic performance (E 1/2  = 0.83 V) and reaction kinetics (100.2 mV dec -1 ). It exhibits excellent catalytic activity in a liquid zinc-air battery (ZAB) with a low gap voltage (∼0.75 V) and long cycle stability (1162 h). This catalytic performance can be attributed to the cooperative mechanism of high-entropy-driven polymetallic elements, wherein Cr 3+ regulates the electronic structure of Fe 2+ at the tetrahedral site, serving as the primary ORR active site, while rGO facilitates electron transfer, thereby enhancing ORR catalytic activity. This study presents a feasible approach to improving the slow ORR kinetics in ZABs using a high-entropy strategy.

Bottom-up synthesis of MOF-derived hollow N-doped carbon materials for enhanced ORR performance

Lulu Chai,Linjie Zhang,Xian Wang,Leqiong Xu,Cheng Han,Ting-Ting Li,Yue Hu,Jinjie Qian,Shaoming Huang

The search on low-cost, ultra-stable, and high-performance non-novel metal replacements to the Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of great urgency. Herein, a bottom-up method has been proposed to synthesize unique hollow N-doped carbon spheres (HNCSs) from an initial amorphous coordination polymer (CP) template-assisted route for the first time. HNCSs exhibit competitively comparable high electrocatalytic ORR activity, excellent reaction selectivity , and stronger long-term stability and negligible methanol crossover effect compared to the commercial Pt/C under the alkaline medium . Together with the other two reported carbonaceous ORR catalysts, including SCSs and NGPCs , our HNCSs possess the lowest Tafel slope of 65.7 mV dec −1 which is close to Pt/C (62.6 mV dec −1 ), and show much enhanced ORR activity (J L  = 5.34 mA cm −2 ) and stability (Retention = 96.5%, Time = 10 h). This CP-templated route for hollow carbon materials will shed light on a new synthetic strategy to prepare high-performance carbon-based and/or metal-free ORR catalysts.

Ruge Zhao,Baoxia Ni,Luming Wu,Pingchuan Sun,Tiehong Chen

Efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are of paramount importance for electrochemical energy applications. Herein, a high-efficient carbon-based trifunctional electrocatalyst FeCoP/C is synthesized through a simple one-step supramolecular-assisted method, in which a supramolecular gel structure is formed by phosphoric acid and melamine to allow the efficient and homogeneous incorporation of highly active species. Experimentally, the as-obtained catalysts exhibit practical trifunctional activities in the ORR, OER, and HER. In alkaline electrolytes , requiring overpotentials of 95 and 282 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for HER and OER, respectively, and presents the significantly increased alkalic ORR activity, with the half-wave potential of 0.849 V. Furthermore, the FeCoP/C also showed good integrated capabilities for Zn-air batteries. This supramolecular-assisted strategy could bring new inspiration to boost the electrocatalytic performance of transition metal-based electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

Adding Fe/dicyandiamide to Co-MOF to greatly improve its ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalytic activity

Can Fang,Xiangmei Tang,Qingfeng Yi

Exploring efficient non-precious metal oxygen electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) is of great importance in electrochemical energy conversion devices like metal-air battery. Among them, carbon-based composites derived from metal-organic framework (MOF) exhibit excellent catalytic performance in ORR/OER. In this paper, Co-MOF-67 was firstly prepared, and then mixed with FeCl 3 ·6 H 2 O and dicyandiamide, followed by a one-step pyrolysis to obtain bamboo-like nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes . For the samples, Fe and Co nanoparticles were encapsulated in the front end of the carbon nanotubes and the presence of new (n)-diamond carbon was unexpectedly found. The obtained catalyst (FeCo@CNTs-60) has an onset potential of 1.04 V for ORR in alkaline solution, which is close to the commercial Pt/C (40 wt% Pt) of 1.05 V. The onset potential of 1.02 V in quasi-neutral solution exceeds that of Pt/C of 0.99 V. In addition, FeCo@CNTs-60 exhibited a low potential difference of 0.81 V between OER and ORR potentials. The alkaline zinc-air batteries, fabricated with the sample as the electrocatalyst of air electrode, exhibit higher peak power density and stability than Pt/C, while the rechargeable batteries present superior cycling discharge/charge stability at 5 mA·cm −2 and 10 mA·cm −2 . In particular, the battery with FeCo@CNTs-60 was conducted for continuous over 1300 h of ultra long-term cycle charging / discharging test at a current density of 5 mA·cm −2 , and it reveals excellent stability with high voltage efficiency and also presents superior cycle charging / discharging stability after replacing the Zn plates and electrolyte.

MOF-derived Porous Carbon Nanofiber Assembly as High Efficiency ORR Electrocatalysts for Zinc-air Batteries

Ma Jin-Liang,Liu Long-Long,Zhao Ren-Hai,Yuan Ding,Ning Xin

Reasonable construction of high activity and low cost non-noble metal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst is of great importance for the wide application of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Using bimetallic MOF as a precursor combined with electrospinning, high-temperature carbonization and electrodeposition, we successfully developed a porous carbon nanofiber (Co@Fe-CNFs-1000) with bimetallic active center as an efficient catalyst for ORR. The successful construction of this special core-shell structure directly explores the synergy between different active centers. The results showed that the synthesized Co@Fe-CNFs-1000 catalyst exhibited ORR performance comparable to that of Pt/C in 0.1 mol/L KOH electrolyte, high half-wave potential ( E 1/2 =0.81 V) and limiting current density ( J L =5.4 mA-cm −2 ). In addition, homemade liquid ZABs with Co@Fe-CNFs-1000 as the air cathode showed excellent power density (155.8 mW·cm −2 ), specific capacity (780.6 mAh·g Zn −1 ) and long-term stability (over 100 h at 2 mA·cm −2 ), surpassing even Pt/C-based batteries. In addition, the flexible solid-state ZABs assembled based on Co@Fe-CNFs-1000 demonstrates excellent flexibility and durability. This work provides a new idea for constructing ORR catalysts with high activity centers.

Ceria nanoclusters coupled with Ce-Nx sites for efficient oxygen reduction in Zn-air batteries

Yueming Yan,Qian Zhu,Lei Cao,Feng Gu,Shiji Liu,Yuhao Luo,Feng Liu,Shufen Wang,Lanlan Fan,Shixian Xiong

Rational construction of efficient carbon-supported rare earth cerium nanoclusters as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of great significance to promote the practical application of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, N doped conductive carbon black anchored CeO 2 nanoclusters (CeO 2 Clusters/NC) for the ORR is reported. The volatile cerium species vaporized by CeO 2 nanoclusters at high temperatures are captured by nitrogen-rich carbon carriers to form highly dispersed Ce-N x active sites. Benefiting from the coupling effect between oxygen vacancies-enriched CeO 2 nanoclusters and highly dispersed Ce-N x sites, the prepared 2CeO 2 Clusters/NC catalyst possesses an ORR half-wave potential of 0.88 V, superior electrochemical stability, and better methanol tolerance compared to commercial Pt/C catalysts. Moreover, the 2CeO 2 Clusters/NC involved liquid ZABs show excellent energy efficiency, superior stability, and a high energy density of 982 Wh kg −1 at 10 mA cm −2 .

Vanadium Nitride Supported on N-Doped Carbon as High-Performance ORR Catalysts for Zn–Air Batteries

Yidan Fu,Lina Han,Pengfei Zheng,Xianhui Peng,Xianglan Xian,Jinglin Liu,Xiaoyuan Zeng,Peng Dong,Jie Xiao,Yingjie Zhang

It is desirable to prepare low-cost non-noble metal catalysts using a simple and efficient method. Herein, we display for the first time that nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon-supported vanadium nitride (VN/NC/C-x) catalysts can be regulated by dicyandiamide (DCDA). The introduction of DCDA not only effectively controls the pore structure, but also plays an important role in adjusting oxygen vacancies and d-electrons. In addition, DCDA is not only a significant raw material for the N-doped carbon, but also a nitrogen source for the preparation of vanadium nitride. The VN/NC/C-3 catalyst was prepared after optimization of the preparation parameters, and the macro/micro structure demonstrates a superior ORR performance in alkaline media with a positive onset potential of 0.85 V and a half-wave potential of 0.75 V, the limiting current density is as high as 4.52 mA·cm−2, and the Tafel slope is only 75.54 mV·dec−1. The VN/NC/C-3-based Zn–air battery exhibits a highest peak power density (161.82 mW∙cm−2) and an excellent energy density (702.28 mAh·kgZn−1and 861.51 Wh·kgZn−1). This work provides a valuable synthetic approach for the preparation of other transition metal nitride catalysts with a relative economic value and high performance.Keywords:VN/NC/C;N-doped carbon;oxygen vacancies;oxygen reduction reaction;Zn–air battery
