Radio-frequency heating (RFH) coupled with peroxydisulfate (PDS) represents a promising approach for the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-contaminated soil, however, its performance and enhancement mechanisms remain unclear. Here, an RFH-PDS system was systematically evaluated using benz[a]anthracene (BaA) as a representative PAH, and its applicability was further assessed in field-contaminated soils. Under temperature-matched conditions, RFH outperformed conventional heating (CH) with increasing BaA degradation rate constant by 57% and reducing the apparent activation energy by 8.72 kJ mol −1 at 50 W RF power. RFH accelerated PDS decomposition with a 1.80-fold higher rate constant and enhanced SO 4 •− and • OH generation, consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations showing RF-induced weakening of the O–O bond in PDS. The BaA desorption rate from soil was increased by 59% under RFH relative to CH, which was potentially promoted by RFH-induced dissolved organic matter release, whereas metal dissolution showed a negligible contribution. DFT and GC-MS analyses indicated that RF exposure could modify the electrostatic potential distribution of BaA and alter its degradation pathways. Overall, the temperature-matched kinetic comparison, enhanced PDS activation, and altered BaA degradation pathways suggest an RF-associated enhancement beyond bulk thermal activation. For field-contaminated soil containing eight PAHs at 402.88 mg kg −1 , RFH-PDS achieved 97.15% removal and reduced the total PAHs concentration to 11.49 mg kg −1 , with residual PAHs below regulatory limits. These findings demonstrate that the RFH-PDS system is an effective and potentially scalable technology for the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soils.

The emission of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) poses a significant risk to the ecological environment. Therefore, it is of great importance to investigate the formation characteristics of PAHs during the coal and biomass utilization. The formation of PAHs is primarily attributed to the incomplete combustion of fuels. In this work, the organic components of raw bituminous coal (BC), wheat straw (WS), and corn straw (CS) were analyzed and the formation characteristics of PAHs were explored using a fixed-bed pyrolysis system. The emission characteristics of particulate matter (PM) and PAHs were investigated in a drop-tube furnace. The results indicate that BC contains a higher proportion of aliphatic hydrocarbons, and the oxygen-containing functional groups of WS and CS are more complex. The content of PAHs in the extracts of raw BC, WS, and CS is 24.16 µg/g, 0.39 µg/g, and 0.41 µg/g, respectively. During the pyrolysis, the PAHs formation characteristics of coal are comparable to biomass. The content of PAHs in pyrolysis gas is significantly higher than that in the char. With the increase of temperature, the PAHs content in pyrolysis gas increases and then decreases, reaching a maximum value at 1000℃. At the low temperatures, the primary source of PAHs is the decomposition of the organic component of fuels. At the high temperatures, the rupture of the basic backbone and the condensation polymerization reaction are the important factors influencing PAHs emissions. The maximum PAHs emissions of BC, WS and CS are 4196.94 µg/g, 4426.78 µg/g, and 5479.50 µg/g, respectively. During the combustion, with the increase of oxygen content, the emissions of PM and PAHs gradually decrease. The proportion of low-ring PAHs increases, while the proportion of high-ring PAHs decreases. Furthermore, PM 1-2.5 accounts for 52.34–84.37 % of total PM emissions. PAHs are more easily enriched in these fine particles with the proportion of 53.71–71.09 % of the total PAHs emissions.

Immobilized microorganism technology is expected to enhance microbial activity and stability and is considered an effective technique for removing soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, there are limited high-efficiency and stable bacterial preparations available. In this study, alkali-modified biochar (Na@CBC700) was used as the adsorption carrier, sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as embedding agents, and CaCl 2 as the cross-linking agent to prepare immobilized Acinetobacter (CoIMB) through a composite immobilization method. The CoIMB preparation was optimized using response surface methodology and applied to PAH-contaminated soil remediation. Results indicated that CoIMB exhibited improved mechanical strength and microbial activity, achieving degradation rates of 2–5 rings PAHs up to 82.41 %, averaging 1.5 times higher than CK. High dose CoIMB treatment enhanced soil microbial community diversity, enriching Acinetobacter , and increased the abundance of functional genes related to fatty acid metabolism and energy metabolism (K00249, K01897, K00059). This composite immobilized bacterial particle provides a novel, broad-spectrum, and cost-effective solution for remediating organic pollutants in soil environments.

Due to the high biotoxicity and persistence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil becomes an intractable problem. Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes are widely used to degrade PAHs in aquatic environment. However, they are not convenient for used in soil due to the heterogeneity and complexity of soil matrix . In this study, a green and convenient ball milling process is introduced to activate persulfate for the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil. About 82.5% PAHs were removed with 10% wt. Na 2 S 2 O 8 (PS) addition and ball-milling for 2 h under 500 r/min. The degradation of PAHs is attributed to the attack of radicals (SO 4 · - and·OH) generated from the activation of PS by mechanochemistry. Moreover, stable Si-O bonds were disrupted during ball-milling process, and formed free electron on the surface of soil particles. This facilitates the electron transfer from oxidants to contaminants. The particle size, surface element composition, functional group, and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the slight disturbance of ball-milling-assisted PS process on the physical and chemical properties of soil. Therefore, ball-milling assisted PS approach would be a promising technology for the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.

A synergistic mesoporous silica nanoparticle-sodium deoxycholate (mPS-NaDC) substrate was developed for room temperature phosphorimetry . The synergistic substrate exhibited rapid and strong RTP-inducing ability against temperature variation. NaDC might adsorb on the inner surface of mPS pore by possible hydrogen bonding and protected the triplet state of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with different molecular sizes. Two mPSs named LPMS1 and LPMS2 with pore size of 3.05 and 3.83 nm were synthesized and optimized in inducing RTP, and the latter, LPMS2, was selected as an ideal substrate because of its stronger protection ability to the triplet and good stability. Dibromopropane and cyclohexane were also used as assistant phosphorescence-inducers. All results demonstrated the feasibility and application potential of synergistic mPS-NaDC substrate in phosphorimetry. The interaction detail of NaDC and inner surface of selected mPS still needs to be explored in future.

It is still difficult to determine the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons accurately in natural water by fluorescence technique because of their low solubility, different fluorescent intensity, and the complex interferents from water environments. In this work, three-way fluorescence spectra combined with three methods including three-way parallel factor analysis, multi-way partial least square with residual bilinearization and unfolded partial least square with residual bilinearization were used to predict the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at the μg L−1 level in reservoir and river water, respectively. The prediction abilities of these methods on different analytes were evaluated by validation sets. The results demonstrate that unfolded partial least square with residual bilinearization yields the optimal results with relative error less than or equal to 6% for phenanthrene, pyrene, anthracene and fluorene, and 35% for acenaphthene and fluoranthene in different water backgrounds.

Soil contamination by high-molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HMW-PAHs) is a challenging problem worldwide. Bioremediation is a safe and cost-effective way of abating HMW-PAHs. The present study was designed to investigate the potential of microbes in the rhizosphere of Fire Phoenix plants in biodegradation of HMW-PAHs in a pot-culture experiment. Plant growth, removal rates of PAHs, phospholipid fatty acids, and fungal community composition were determined in soils devoid of PAHs or containing a low or a high level of PAHs after 0, 60, 120, and 150 days of experiment initiation. Results showed that plants were able to continuously grow in the contaminated soils during a 150-day experiment. The biodegradation rates in low and high ∑4PAH (four compounds: pyrene, chrysene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, and benzo(k)fluoranthene) soils with plants were 75.2% and 78.8%, which were 21.8% and 28.0% higher than the control soils without plants, respectively. The soil microbial analysis showed that the growth of Fire Phoenix led to the shift of soil microbial community structure by promoting the growth of fungi in four dominant genera: Aspergillus , Mortierella , Geomyces , and Humicola , which could play an important role in PAHs degradation. Based on the results from this study and other relevant reports, schematic metabolic pathways for microbe-mediated degradation of PAHs in the Fire Phoenix rhizosphere soils were proposed, which include cytochrome P450 monooxygenase pathway, ligninolytic pathway, and dioxygenase pathway. Our study showed that the beneficial interactions between Fire Phoenix and soil microbes, fungi in particular, represent a viable way of reducing HMW-PAHs from contaminated soils.

The eco-friendly slow-release material for persulfate (PS) using chitosan (CS) and urea (U) composite as frame structure ( [email protected] ) was firstly used to remediate the site soil contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from Hefei city, China. The influences of glutaraldehyde dosage and urea dosage on the slow released properties of [email protected] was investigated and a longer release time of 190.0 d to 591.0 d was achieved, indicating the promising tunability according to the contents of pollutants in site soil. The effects of various factors (cross-linking agent dosage, initial PAHs concentration, [email protected] dosage, hydrogen peroxide dosage, etc.) on the degradation of soil spiked with PAHs (80 and 8 mg·kg −1 ) by [email protected] were studied, and the degradation pathway of PAHs was speculated. According to the EPR results, urea played an important role in promoting the 1 O 2 generation, which was the main reactive oxidative species. Finally, the long-term remediation of the industrial site soil with total PAHs of 553.2 mg·kg −1 was performed using 50 mg·g −1 soil [email protected] and 90.22% removal rate was obtained after nine months. Moreover, the monitoring results of soil respiration gas show that, in addition to CO 2 , there is no additional greenhouse gas generated in the process of soil remediation , suggesting that the remediation of site soil using [email protected] has an excellent application prospect.

Fluorescence technology is an effective tool for detecting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water. However, the accuracy of fluorescence detection is reduced by the spectral overlap of different PAHs and coexisting colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). In this study, a single-excitation interval selection method based on an excitation-emission matrix is proposed to quantify four PAHs: fluorene, pyrene, phenanthrene, and benzo(a)pyrene under CDOM interference. The optimal excitation wavelength for each PAH was obtained by stability analysis, based on which the optimal emission interval was obtained by chaotic particle swarm optimization. The partial least squares (PLS) prediction models of four PAHs under interference were established. On comparing with other modeling methods, the results show that the models with interval selection have better prediction accuracy (mean relative error < 10%) under CDOM interference. The recovery rate and limit of detection of the method were also evaluated. This study provides a new and helpful strategy for fluorescence detection of interfering PAHs in water.

Sample pretreatment plays important role in the analysis and detection of trace pollutants in complex matrices, such as environmental and biological samples. The adsorption materials of sample pretreatment receive considerable attention, which has a significant effect on the sensitivity and selectivity of the analytical method. In this work, the porous hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was utilized as a coating material of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) to extract and preconcentrate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) prior to separation and detection with GC-FID. Attributed to the multiple interactions including hydrophobicity, hydrogen bonding and strong π–π interaction, the h-BN coating showed excellent extraction performance for PAHs. Under the optimal conditions, the method showed the linear relationship in the range of 0.1–50 ng mL−1for acenaphthene, 0.05–50 ng mL−1for pyrene, and 0.02–50 ng mL−1for fluorene, phenanthrene and anthracene with a correlation coefficient (R2) not lower than 0.9910. The enrichment factors were achieved between 1526 and 4398 for PAHs with h-BN as SPME fiber coating. The detection limits were obtained in the range of 0.004–0.033 ng mL−1, which corresponds to 0.08–0.66 ng g−1for soil. The method was successfully applied to analysis of real soil samples. The recoveries were determined between 78.0 and 120.0% for two soil samples. The results showed that h-BN material provided a promising alternative in sample pretreatment and analysis. Keywords:sample pretreatment;solid-phase microextraction (SPME);hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN);nanomaterials;polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs);soil

Phytosterols have been demonstrated to be precursors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) formed during biomass pyrolysis. Here, a novel Paenibacillus sp. was evaluated for its ability to degrade phytosterols in tobacco waste extract (TWE). The optimal conditions for cell growth and stigmasterol (a representative of phytosterols) degradation were 37 °C, pH 7.0, 1.0 g/L yeast extract, and 6.0 g/L glucose. Paenibacillus sp. could degrade stigmasterol under high concentrations of glucose (up to 130 g/L) and tolerate wide pH (5.0–9.0) and temperature (25–42 °C) ranges. The new strain could degrade stigmasterol completely into CO 2 and H 2 O, and no intermediate steroids were detected during the degradation process. Phytosterol degradation in TWE was demonstrated by high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Under optimal conditions (37 °C, pH 7.0, with the exponential-phase cells), the total degradation ratio of phytosterols reached 38.5% in TWE, including 45.2% of stigmasterol, 37.4% of β-sitosterol, 27.3% of campesterol, and 28.7% of cholesterol. These results showed that Paenibacillus sp. is a candidate for phytosterol degradation in TWE and other biomass and is potentially useful in reducing the PAHs generated from biomass pyrolysis.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were frequently found in sediment and were primarily treated through microbial degradation. Thus, efficient management of PAH pollution requires exploring the molecular degradation mechanisms of PAHs and expanding the pool of available microbial resources. A fungus (identified as Sarocladium terricola strain RCEF778 ) with the remarkable ability to degrade pyrene was screened from sediment near a petrochemical plant, and its growth and pyrene degradation characteristics were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that the fungus exhibited great effectiveness in pyrene degradation, with a degradation ratio of 88.97% at 21 days at the conditions: 35 °C, pH 7, 10 mg L −1 initially pyrene concentration, 3% supplementary salt, and glucose supplementation. The generation and concentration variation of the intermediate products were identified, and the results revealed that the fungus degraded pyrene through two pathways: by salicylic acid and by phthalic acid. Three sediments (M1, M2, M3), each exhibiting different levels of PAH pollution, were employed to examine the effectiveness of fungal degradation of PAHs in practical sediment samples. These data showed that with the fungus, the degradation ratios ranged from 13.64% to 23.50% for 2–3 rings PAHs, 40.93%–49.41% for 4 rings PAHs, and 39.59%–48.07% for 5–6 rings PAHs, which were significantly higher than those for the sediment without the fungus and confirmed the excellent performance of the fungal. Moreover, the Gompertz model was employed to analyze the degradation kinetics of 4-rings and 5–6 rings PAHs in these sediments, and the results demonstrated that the addition of the fungus could significantly increase the maximum degradation ratio, degradation start-up rate and maximum degradation rate of 4-rings and 5–6 rings PAHs and shorten the time required to reach the maximum degradation rate. This study not only supplied fungal materials but also established crucial theoretical foundations for the development of bioremediation technologies aimed at high molecular weight PAH-contaminated sediments.
