Improved mechanical performance of biodegradable polyester based on 1,3-butanediol

Jiaxin Yu,Xiaojie Zhao,Yuhan Liu,Mingxiao Deng,Bao Zhang,Hongwei Pan,Huiliang Zhang,Baijun Liu,Yongfeng Men,Zhaoyan Sun,Wei Hu

Biodegradable plastic can decompose in the natural environment and thus effectively reduce the environmental pollution. Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is a kind of polyester with good mechanical performance, degradability, and biocompatibility. In this study, a novel kind of poly(1,3-butylene adipate-co-1,4-butylene terephthalate) (PB′ABT) was synthesized with 1,3-butanediol, adipic acid, 1,4-butanediol and terephthalic acid as monomers through direct esterification and melt polycondensation to develop a kind of biodegradable polyester with more practical application value. A molecular weight of more than 50000 and intrinsic viscosity of 0.91-1.01 dL/g was achieved. The molecular structure of the polyester can be effectively adjusted with the monomer ratio, thereby affecting the properties, considering the thermal behavior, crystallinity, and mechanical performance increased with the 1,4-butadiene terephthalate (BT) unit content. Glass transition temperature (T g ), crystallization temperature (T c ), melting temperature (T m ) and crystallinity increased from -24.5 °C to 0 °C, 66.2 °C to 149.2 °C, 112.8 °C to 179.4 °C, and 20% to 33%, respectively. The highest tensile strength and elongation at break were 45 MPa and 1458%, respectively. PB′ABT-55 (molar ratio of BT: 55%) had higher thermal stability as compared with the biodegradable PBAT, and also superior tensile properties than the commercial PBAT. The results illustrated that the prepared PB′ABT is promising for wide application with good thermal stability, excellent tensile properties and biodegradability.

Synthesis and characterization of biobased poly(butylene adipate-co-furandicarboxylate) with excellent gas barrier properties

Yunxiao Dong,Yong Yang,Jinggang Wang,Qianfeng Wang,Xiaoqin Zhang,Han Hu,Jin Zhu

In this work, we prepared a series of bio-based poly(butylene adipate- co -furandicarboxylate) (PBAF) copolyesters with BF segments ranging from 20 to 80 mol% through a two-step polycondensation. Then, their thermal, mechanical, gas barrier, and degradable properties were investigated. With the increase of BF content, the glass transition temperatures ( T g ) and melting temperatures ( T m ) of PBAFs increase constantly. Besides, PBAF copolyesters exhibit excellent mechanical performance with elongation at break in the range of 140% to 870%. The elastic modulus and tensile strength of PBAF60 are 138 and 17 MPa respectively, which are comparable to those of commercial poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT). Moreover, thanks to the structural characteristics of the furan ring, the barrier performances against CO 2 , O 2 , and H 2 O of PBAFs are 4.6–147.5 folds, 4.0–76.0 folds, and 0.8–8.7 folds of PBAT, respectively. Finally, the degradation tests reveal that the weight losses of PBAFs increase with decreasing BF contents. It is worth emphasizing that although the compost degradation rate of PBAF60 is slightly lower than that of PBAT, it is still a prospective alternative to PBAT due to its improved barrier properties. And it provides a possibility for applications in food packaging, mulch films, and structural elements.

Adsorption behaviors of chlorpyrifos on UV aged microplastics

Minggu Zhang,Na Liu,Lei Hou,Chao Li,Chengliang Li

Both non-degradable and biodegradable plastics can act as vectors of diverse organic pollutants. In this study, two types of biodegradable microplastics [poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA)] and one type of non-degradable microplastics [polypropylene (PP)] were selected to investigate the impacts of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation for one month on microplastics surface modification and their adsorption behaviors for chlorpyrifos (CPF). The study revealed that PBAT held the largest adsorption capacity, and PLA held the fastest adsorption rate. The UV irradiation diminished the adsorption capacities on PLA and PP but enhanced the adsorption capacities on PBAT. The adsorption capacity normalized by specific surface area revealed that specific surface area was the dominant factor for affecting the adsorption capacities on PP and PLA after UV irradiation. These findings further clarify the interaction between CPF and microplastics, and provide a theoretical basis for assessing the ecological risk of microplastics in water.

Continuous Blown Film Preparation of High Starch Content Composite Films with High Ultraviolet Aging Resistance and Excellent Mechanical Properties

Bowen Lin,Chengqiang Li,Fangping Chen,Changsheng Liu

Starch/PBAT blown films with high ultraviolet aging resistance and excellent mechanical properties were prepared by introducing lignin with polyurethane prepolymer (PUP) as a starch modifier and physical compatibilizer and 4,4′–methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) as a crosslinker. Starch was modified by reacting the NCO groups of the PUP with the OH groups of the starch to form a carbamate bond. The mechanical properties, hydrophobic properties, ultraviolet barrier, ultraviolet aging properties and microscopic morphology of starch/PBAT films with different contents of lignin were investigated. The results showed that the starch/PBAT films were blown continuously. The addition of lignin did not decrease the mechanical properties. On the contrary, the film with 1% lignin possessed the excellent mechanical properties with longitudinal tensile strength of 15.87 MPa and the elongation at a break of 602.21%. In addition, the higher the lignin content, the better the UV blocking effect. The introduction of lignin did not affect the crystalline properties but improved the hydrophilic properties and sealing strength of the high starch content composite films. Keywords:lignin;film;PBAT;high starch content;ultraviolet aging resistance

Tailoring Aliphatic–Aromatic PBAT Copolyesters for Melt-Blown Biodegradable Nonwovens

Jiaxu He,Zhihao Zhang,Senlong Yu,Liping Zhu,Hengxue Xiang,Meifang Zhu

The escalating environmental burden caused by nondegradable polymers in disposable nonwoven products has driven the exploration of sustainable, biodegradable alternatives. This study synthesizes a series of aliphatic–aromatic copolyesters (PBA/PBT/PBAT) by varying the molar ratio of terephthalic acid (PTA) to adipic acid (AA) (1:9/3:7/5:5/7:3/9:1), systematically investigating the effect of composition on chemical structure, molecular weight, thermal behavior, and rheological properties. By controlling polycondensation end-points, virgin PBAT copolyesters with high-melt flowability (MFR > 40 g/10 min) and appropriate melting temperatures (123.1°C–205.1°C) were directly obtained without post-polymerization chain scission. Copolyesters with PTA/AA ratios of 5:5, 7:3, and 9:1 were processed on a pilot melt-blowing line. The resulting nonwovens were characterized for fiber morphology, pore structure, tensile properties, wettability, air permeability, and baseline filtration performance. The results indicate that increasing the PTA content enhances chain rigidity and thermal stability while shifting the melt from viscous- to elastic-dominated behavior. PBAT 7:3 achieved the optimal viscoelastic balance, yielding uniform fibers (22.31 μm) and cohesive web architecture, delivering favorable tensile strength (MD: 8.35 N), air permeability (3786 mm/s), and PM0.3 filtration efficiency (28.78% at 10 L/min). This work provides a practical synthesis-tuning strategy for developing biodegradable melt-blown nonwovens tailored for prefiltration, wipe, and sorbent applications. Highlights Direct synthesis yielded high-flowability PBAT copolyesters. PTA/AA ratio governed structure, rheology, and spinnability. Fiber architecture determined nonwoven transport and filtration performance.

Ionic Liquid-Assisted Antibacterial Membranes: Successful Preparation and Enhanced Antibacterial Effect

De Bai,Jiahong Huang,Yiyang Bo,Mi Wang,Wen Yu,Zhenyuan Wang,Chengyu Wu,Jiaheng Zhang

In this study, we synthesized a supramolecular antibacterial ionic salt, [PHMB][Sal], based on poly(hexamethylene biguanide) hydrochloride (PHMB) and sodium salicylate (SS) to endow plastic membranes with antibacterial function. The antibacterial composites of polyelectrolyte-nonsteroidal ionic salt can be blended with polymer materials, such as polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), because the melting point of the salt can be coordinated with that of the polymer material. The properties of the prepared membranes containing polyelectrolyte-nonsteroidal ionic salts did not change significantly. The mechanical properties and antimicrobial activities of the prepared hydrophobic membranes were investigated. When 3% of [PHMB][Sal] was added, the antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were 4.12 and 4.30, respectively, and the antibacterial rate was as high as 99.9%, exhibiting extremely excellent antimicrobial properties. Biodegradable [PHMB][Sal] membrane materials are expected to be used in medical environments as well as on packaging surfaces in logistics, which can effectively prevent bacterial cross-infection.

Extrusion-blown oxidized starch/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) biodegradable active films with adequate material properties and antimicrobial activities for chilled pork preservation

Huan Li,Zhuo Chen,Shuidong Zhang,Chang-Ying Hu,Xiaowen Xu

Food safety concerns from spoilage and non-degradable packaging risk human health. Progress made in biodegradable plastic films, but limited study on biomass composite films with favorable morphological, mechanical, and inherent antibacterial properties for fresh meat preservation. Herein, we present a versatile packaging film created through the extrusion blowing process, combining oxidized starch (OST) with poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT). SEM analysis revealed even distribution of spherical OST particles on film's surface. FTIR spectra revealed new intermolecular hydrogen bonds between OST and PBAT. While combining OST slightly reduced tensile properties, all composite films met the required strength of 16.5 ± 1.39 MPa. Notably, films with 40 % OST showed over 98 % antibacterial rate against Staphylococcus aureus within 2 h. pH wasn't the main cause of bacterial growth inhibition; OST hindered growth by interfering with nutrient absorption and metabolism due to its carboxyl groups. Additionally, OST disrupted bacterial membrane integrity and cytoplasmic membrane potential. Remarkably, the OST/PBAT film excellently preserved chilled fresh pork, maintaining TVB-N level at 12.6 mg/100 g on day 6, microbial count at 10 5  CFU/g within 6–10 days, and sensory properties for 8 days. It extended pork's shelf life by two days compared to polyethylene film, suggesting an alternative to a synthetic material.

Fabrication of biodegradable hollow microsphere composites made of polybutylene adipate co-terephthalate/polyvinylpyrrolidone for drug delivery and sustained release

Chuan Xie,Qinqin Xiong,Yuanzhi Wei,Xin Li,Jiajun Hu,Min He,Shinan Wei,Jia Yu,Sha Cheng,Mashaal Ahmad,Yufei Liu,Sihai Luo,Xi Zeng,Jie Yu,Heng Luo

Sustained drug release has attracted increasing interest in targeted drug therapy. However, existing methods of drug therapy suffer drug action time, large fluctuations in the effective concentration of the drug, and the risk of side effects. Here, a biodegradable composite of polybutylene adipate co-terephthalate/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PBAT/PVP) consisting of electrospun hollow microspheres as sustained-released drug carriers is presented. The as-prepared PBAT/PVP composites show faster degradation rate and drug (Erlotinib) release than that of PBAT. Furthermore, PBAT/PVP composites loaded with Erlotinib provide sustained release effect, thus achieving a better efficacy than that after the direct injection of erlotinib due to the fact that the composites allow a high drug concentration in the tumor for a longer period. Hence, this work provides a potential effective solution for clinical drug therapy and tissue engineering using drug microspheres with a sustained release.

Multifunctional PBAT/Curcumin Bioactive Composite Films with Colorimetric Properties for Packaging

Yujie Guo,Hong Yu,Shunlin Yang,Yanziwen Zhang,Xiucheng Zhao,Lihua Zhang,Haibo Xie

The extensive use of common petroleum-based plastics in food packaging has raised serious environmental concerns, accelerating the search for biodegradable and functional alternatives. In this study, poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/curcumin (PBAT/Cur) bioactive composite films with colorimetric sensing properties were successfully prepared via solution casting. A systematic characterization was conducted on the structural, morphological, barrier, antioxidant, antibacterial, and colorimetric properties of the films. The optimal PBAT/Cur1% films exhibited potent antioxidant activity (DPPH scavenging up to 95.6%) and moderate antibacterial activity againstE. coliandS. aureus. Additionally, curcumin incorporation not only increased the water contact angle of the PBAT/Cur1% films, indicating enhanced surface hydrophobicity, but also concurrently improved the barrier properties, as evidenced by a reduced water vapor permeability (WVP of 14.58 g·mm/m2·day·kPa) and a lower oxygen transmission rate (OTR of 7.533 × 10−3cm3/m2·day·Pa) compared to the neat PBAT films. Notably, the films displayed a distinct and rapid color change from yellow to reddish-brown upon exposure to ammonia vapor, suggesting their promise for on-package visual freshness indication. These findings highlight PBAT/Cur composite films as a sustainable option for active and intelligent food packaging, with combined antioxidant, antibacterial, and colorimetric properties, making them promising for packaging protein-rich foods (e.g., meat and seafood).

Development and properties of biodegradable PBAT/PPy/ETTPBAT yarn strain sensors

Huikai Nan,Chunhui Zhang,Jianhong Liu,Chengxue Li,Chunxiu Liu,Shuolei Wang,Yubing Dong

Conventional flexible sensor substrates often suffer from critical limitations, such as non-biodegradability, restricted elastic strain ranges, and vulnerability of exposed conductive functional layers. The development of flexible wearable strain sensors with biodegradability, high ductility, broad elastic strain ranges, and reusability is imperative. Here, the epoxidized soybean oil (ESO)/tannic acid (TA)/triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC)/polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) (ETTPBAT) fibers with significantly expanded elastic strain capability were synthesized via melt spinning and UV irradiation techniques, and the PBAT/polypyrrole (PPy)/ETTPBAT yarn strain sensors were fabricated via in-situ polymerization, twisting, and encapsulation processes. The effects of UV irradiation duration, polymerization time, and p -toluene sulfonic acid monohydrate ( p -TSA) dopant concentration on the mechanical properties, thermodynamic characteristics, sensing performance, and electrothermal conversion capabilities of the PBAT/PPy/ETTPBAT yarn strain sensors were systematically investigated. The prepared biodegradable PBAT-based strain sensors have stable sensing performance and larger elastic strain range, which is valuable for enhancing the performance and application of biodegradable polymer-based strain sensors.

Kaolinite-based Janus nanosheets as effective compatibilizer of PLA/PBAT blend

Bingrui Yang,Tengfei Fan,Yixuan Mao,Jixi Chen,Botuo Zheng,Yu Sheng,Huagui Zhang

To address the increasing global plastic pollution while the reducing oil supply, the biodegradable and bio-derived poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has been developed and considered to be the most promising substitute of petroleum-based plastics. However, the severe brittleness of PLA has become the obstacle of its broad application. Blending modification with poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) has been proved to be an potentially feasible strategy to toughen PLA, but conflicted by the poor compatibility between PLA and PBAT. To tackle the problem, a comb-type clay-based Janus nanosheet of poly(methyl methacrylate- kaolinite- poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PMMA-Kaol-PBAT) was prepared by selectively grafting PMMA and PBAT separately on either sides of kaolinite Janus nanosheets (JNS). PBAT was functionalized with quaternary amine via aminolysis before being cation-exchanged onto the siloxane tetrahedral surface (STS) side of kaolinite nanosheets, while PMMA chains were grafted onto the aluminoxyl octahedral surface (AOS) side after a beforehand surface modification with the silane coupling agent KH-570. Introduced in the PLA/PBAT blend system, the PMMA-Kaol-PBAT was found to enrich at the interface, enhancing the phase compatibility with the phase separation and aggregation inhibited during the film coating and annealing process.

Study on the properties of PLA/PBAT composite modified by nanohydroxyapatite

Dongsheng Yan,Ziyu Wang,Ziyi Guo,Yongming Ma,Chengyu Wang,Haiyan Tan,Yanhua Zhang

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-Co-terephthalate) (PBAT) show high and excellent biocompatibility, which are promising materials used in bone tissue engineering field. In this research, n-HA/PLA/PBAT/MCC composites were prepared by solution blending method. Nano hydroxyapatite (n-HA) was used as nucleation, and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was added to improve the degradation performance of the materials. Compared with the composite without n-HA, the crystallinity of the composites with 6% n-HA was increased by 62%. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the n-HA was evenly dispersed in the composites when the addition ration of n-HA was lower than 6%, while obvious agglomeration of n-HA appeared at the addition ratio of 10%. The tensile test demonstrated that the tensile strength of the composites with different addition ratio transcended the needs of bone tissue engineering materials. The introduction of n-HA in obtained composites simulated the composition and structure of native bone, which suggested a potential utility and application prospect in bone tissue engineering.
