A novel polyester thin film composite nanofiltration (NF) membrane was prepared by interfacial polymerization of pentaerythritol (PE) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on polyethersulfone (PES) supporting membrane. The performance of the polyester composite NF membrane was optimized by regulating the preparation parameters, including reaction time, pH of the aqueous phase solution, pentaerythritol concentration and TMC concentration. A series of characterization, including permeation experiments, attenuated total reflectance-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), zeta potential analyzer and chlorine resistance experiments, were employed to study the properties of the optimized membrane. The results showed that the optimized polyester composite NF membrane exhibited very high rejection of Na 2 SO 4 (98.1%), but the water flux is relatively low (6.1 L/m 2 h, 0.5 MPa, 25 °C). The order of salt rejections is Na 2 SO 4 > MgSO 4 > MgCl 2 > NaCl, which indicated the membrane was negatively charged, just consistent with the membrane zeta potential results. After treating by NaClO solutions with different concentrations (100 ppm, 500 ppm, 1000 ppm, 2000 ppm, 3000 ppm) for 48 h, the results demonstrated that the polyester NF membrane had good chlorine resistance. Additionally, the polyester TFC NF membrane exhibits good long-term stability.

Soft actuators and micro-robots receive significant attention for their potential applications in transportation, photovoltaic conversion devices, clinical care, and other fields. In this work, a polyvinyl alcohol/Chinese ink mixture was uniformly coated on polyethylene film for preparing structure-stabilized bilayer soft actuators. Due to the significant difference in thermal expansion coefficients between the two layers, the actuator can achieve a large bending deformation with a fast response speed under xenon light. A large amplitude of bending angle of 1260° was achieved in 6 s. A soft-body robot similar to an inchworm was constructed by changing the intensity of xenon or near-infrared light combined with the bionic structure design of an inchworm. The robot can realize various forms of movements (such as crawling and pushing boxes) on different surfaces (such as paper and leaves). Light-driven applications such as hands capable of grasping objects (grasping objects 14 times their weight), cats exhibiting variable expressions, elephant trunks performing curling and retraction, and bionic flowers realizing flowering and closing can be realized. In addition, based on the good photothermal conversion and pressure sensing performance of the bilayer actuator, it is able to monitor daily human activities (such as joint flexion, abdominal breathing, water swallowing, and other movements) and integrate with photoelectric conversion devices. This versatile and diverse drive-mode soft robot exhibits significant potential for applications such as wearable devices, transportation, photovoltaic conversion devices, and clinical therapies.

Fluorescent materials, as the core
of flexible sensing,
safety
warning, and intelligent wearable fabrics, have attracted much attention
for their synergistic improvement in functionality and stability.
In response to the issues of inferior compatibility between fluorescent
molecules and matrix materials and insufficient environmental stability
of fluorescent fibers, heat-resistant fluorescent polymers were used
to blend with linear low-density polyethylene via melt spinning. The
effects of fluorescent polymers on the rheological characteristics
of melts and the crystallization behavior of fibers were explored.
As a result, the dispersion and retention of fluorescent substances
in the matrix were effectively controlled. The fiber that formed at
a low draft ratio exhibits superior fluorescence properties. Thermofluorescence
performance shows that the photoluminescence emission intensity of
fibers could maintain 80% as the temperature increased from 323 to
383 K. In addition, at pH 2–6, the sample presents a significant
fluorescence enhancement response due to the pyridine group in the
fluorescent molecule interacting with H + . The polyethylene
composite fibers prepared in this work display excellent optical properties
and environmental adaptability. This provides the theoretical basis
and technical support for the industrial production of optical functional
fibers and applications in the field of flexible intelligent displays.

Polyethylene flash-spun nonwoven is widely used in medical packaging due to its excellent mechanical properties, light weight, and breathability. However, its surface energy is inherently low, and it has a porous structure of stacked ultrafine fibers. These features result in poor printing precision for water-based inks. Conventional coatings often compromise breathability, rendering the material unsuitable for medical sterilization processes. This study proposes a synergistic modification strategy combining corona pretreatment and a PTCC (PVA/TiO₂/CA/CMC-Na) multifunctional coating to produce PE-PTCC flash-spun nonwoven. The results indicate that mild corona treatment effectively etches the fiber surface, significantly enhancing the wettability of the PE nonwoven, with the water contact angle decreasing sharply from 154.1° to 52.3°. The PTCC coating successfully constructs a continuous and dense covering layer that effectively fills the larger interfiber pores while preserving a microporous structure, achieving an air permeability of 23.6 mm s −1 and maintaining good breathability without sacrificing water resistance. The resulting PE-PTCC nonwoven exhibits markedly improved printing performance, including enhanced precision for 0.2 mm line widths, uniform pigment dispersion, sharp line edges, and a low color difference (ΔE = 1.06). Furthermore, the tensile strength in both longitudinal and horizontal directions is enhanced to 35.2 MPa and 30.5 MPa, respectively, demonstrating improved comprehensive mechanical properties while maintaining suitable water vapor transmission for sterilization packaging. This study resolves the critical issues of insufficient wettability and ink bleeding that hinder high-precision printing on PE flash-spun nonwovens, thereby broadening their application prospects in the high-end medical packaging field.

In response to the shortcomings still observed in polyethylene (PE)/ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)/styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) composite modified bitumen regarding storage stratification and low-temperature performance, this paper further introduces furfural extract, elemental sulphur, stabilisers and Z-6036 into this ternary system, and employs orthogonal design to screen the additive ratios. Tests were conducted on conventional physical properties, rotational viscosity, dynamic shear rheology and bending beam rheology, focusing on the material’s temperature sensitivity, rheological behaviour, low-temperature creep resistance and phase characteristics. The modification effects were analysed using fluorescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. Compared with the control group composed of 4% PE, 4% EVA and 2% SBS, the samples obtained from the orthogonal design showed an increase in elongation at 5 °C ranging from 52.5% to 213.9%; the difference in softening points decreased from 35.2 °C to a minimum of 0.1 °C, indicating improved storage stability. The temperature sensitivity of all sample groups was reduced, with the optimal group achieving a VTS of −0.4413, representing a 46.7% improvement over the control group. At −12 °C, the m-values of all nine orthogonal samples were higher than those of the control group, with seven groups reaching m ≥ 0.3, indicating improved low-temperature stress relaxation capability. A comprehensive analysis of the experimental results indicates that the selected chemical additives are beneficial for optimising the dispersion state and compatibility of the SBS/PE/EVA ternary modified bitumen, whilst also balancing rheological properties and low-temperature crack resistance to a certain extent. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses further suggest that internal interactions within the system have been enhanced and the phase distribution has become more uniform; however, the current evidence is insufficient to conclusively determine that a specific form of chemical cross-linking reaction has occurred.

Abstract In this paper, a simple and feasible method for preparing gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) with good ionic transport properties and mechanical stability is proposed. A ZrO 2 /KH570/PU/P123 layer was formed on the outer and inner pore surfaces of PE separator before in situ polymerization by a simple one-step dipping coating process. This coating layer changes the PE separator surface from hydrophobic to hydrophilic, and therefore facilitates the uniform spreading of the GPE precursor solution on the PE surface to enable the formation of highly uniform GPE. Moreover, it effectively compensates the negative effects of in situ gelatinization on the ionic transport behavior of the final PE-supported GPE. This GPE possesses excellent ion transport properties and mechanical stability, as well as improves the static and dynamic interfacial stability with lithium metal anode. When using metallic lithium and LiCoO 2 to assemble cells, this PE-supported GPE affords improved C-rate capability, cycling performance and effective dendrite inhibition. Graphic abstract

The rapid development of optoelectronic devices puts forward higher requirements for flexible transparent films with good mechanical and thermal properties. To further improve the mechanical, thermal and optical properties of the PVA-co-PE nanofiber reinforced epoxy composite film, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) was selected as modifier to enhance the interfacial adhesion between the reinforced nanofibers and matrix. Benefiting from excellent hydrophily, high strength , transparency and ultra-low thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) of CNCs, dramatic improvements in tensile strength , transparency and thermal stability of CNCs/PVA-co-PE/epoxy composites were observed over pure PVA-co-PE nanofiber/epoxy film. Typically, when the CNCs concentration was 3%, the transparency of CNCs/PVA-co-PE/epoxy film increased from 83.4% to 90.4%, the tensile strength increased from 11.4 MPa to 16.4 MPa, the CTE dropped from 33 to 10 ppm/K. Furthermore, as the reinforcement for matrix and the carrier for functional materials , the CNCs/PVA-co-PE nanofiber membrane was used to prepare the patterned photochromic and thermochromic films encapsulated with epoxy, indicating the potential application of CNCs/PVA-co-PE/epoxy composites in the light emitting devices .

Polyethylene (PE) nonwovens produced via flash spunbonding are widely used in personal protective equipment (PPE) and construction due to their excellent mechanical strength, barrier properties, and balanced water-vapor permeability. However, conventional PE-based protective materials often experience significant heat and moisture buildup during extended use in high-temperature environments, leading to discomfort, excessive perspiration, and even heat stress. Here, we developed radiative cooling PE nonwovens (PE-P/SiO2) by applying a polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP)/silicon dioxide (SiO2) hierarchical porous coating via a non-solvent-induced phase separation method. The resulting structure endows the PE nonwovens with high solar reflectance (93.8%) and strong MIR emissivity (96.4%), achieving a cooling effect of up to ∼13 °C under direct sunlight, significantly outperforming conventional PE nonwovens and cotton fabrics. Moreover, the PE-P/SiO2 nonwovens exhibit excellent self-cleaning ability, washing durability, and UV resistance, ensuring long-term performance. These radiative cooling PE nonwovens present a promising solution for enhancing thermal management in PPE and other heat-sensitive applications.

The heavy metal ions are harmful for both environment and human healthy, therefore it is highly demanded to remove them from environment. In this study, the crystalline nanocellulose (CNC)/ poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene (PVA- co -PE) nanofibrous membrane functionalized with 1, 2, 3, 4 -butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) was prepared to adsorb the heavy metal ions. To enhance the absorptivity, BTCA modified membrane was activated by NaHCO 3 . The structures of modified nanofibrous membranes were characterized by FESEM and FTIR. The modified membrane was then used to adsorb the Pb (II), and the mixture of Pb (II), Cr (VI), Mn (II) and Cu (II). The effect of pH value and initial concentration on the absorptivity of nanofibrous membrane to Pb (II) was studied and the adsorption kinetics was analysed. After NaHCO 3 activation, the modified nanofibrous membrane demonstrated excellent adsorption capacity to the single metal ions and metal ions mixture. The equilibrium adsorption could reach 471.55 mg·g −1 at 15 °C, higher than other nanofibrous membranes reported. Moreover, the modified nanofibrous membrane was found to be stable and could maintain 50% of the initial data after three times reuse. All of the results indicated the NaHCO 3 activated membrane was a good candidate for the heavy metal ions removal.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composite coatings doped with copper acetate and polyethylene (PE) were fabricated on rubber substrate by electron beam dispersion technique. The effects of dopant nature and glow discharge treatment on morphology, structural and tribological properties of the coatings were investigated. The results showed that Cu and PE doping change the surface structure of PTFE-based composite coatings due to the chemical reactions between the dispersion products. Cu-PE-PTFE coatings show the columnar and layered growth models without and with discharge treatment. Cu adding decreases the crystallinity, branched degree and unsaturated degree of PE coatings, but increases the branched degree and unsaturated bonds in the PE-PTFE coatings. Glow discharge enhances the crystallinity and ordering degree of composite coatings. Friction experiments indicated the significant difference of composite coatings in the nature of their destruction during friction. PE-PTFE coating is characterized of the brittle fracture with clear failure boundaries but Cu-PE-PTFE coating shows a rough surface without cracking and delaminating after friction. Cu doping increases the dynamic coefficient of friction of PE and PE-PTFE composite coatings, but discharge plasma decreases the dynamic coefficient of friction. Cu-PE-PTFE composite coating after discharge treatment has the decreased dynamic coefficient of friction and improved wear resistance. POLYM. ENG. This study proposes a recycling strategy utilizing waste plastic bottles (PET bottle bodies and PE caps) to successfully fabricate a bilayer composite film, PET/(PE–TiO 2 ), which exhibits excellent passive radiative cooling performance and enhanced mechanical properties. The upper layer, consisting of highly reflective PET nanofibers fabricated via electrospinning, achieves a high solar reflectance (> 96%) across the solar spectrum (0.3–2.5 μm). The lower layer, a PE–TiO 2 composite prepared by melt blending, enhances the overall mechanical strength of the material. Systematic characterization demonstrates that the PET/(PE–TiO 2 ) bilayer film maintains high optical performance while significantly improving mechanical strength (breaking strength increased by > 5-fold) and thermal stability (decomposition temperature > 400°C). Both theoretical calculations and experimental validation confirm that the material achieves a net cooling power exceeding 100 W/m 2 under standard solar irradiation (1 kW/m 2 ). Practical applications demonstrate surface temperature reductions of approximately 10°C for the human body and 5.3°C for electronic devices. This work not only achieves efficient synergistic recycling and value-added utilization of PET and PE but also provides a new approach for developing low-cost, high-performance, and environmentally friendly passive cooling materials, with broad application prospects in personal thermal management, electronic thermal regulation, and building energy efficiency.

The microbial biofilm formed on plastics, is ubiquitous in the environment. However, the effects of antibiotic resistance on the development of the biofilm on plastics, especially with regard to initial cell attachment, remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the initial bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm growth of a rifampin (Rif) resistant E. coli (RRE) and a normal gram-positive B. subtilis on a typical plastic (polyethylene, PE). The experiments were conducted in different antibiotic solutions, including Rif, sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and kanamycin (KM), with concentrations ranging from 1 to 1000 μg/L to simulate different aquatic environments. The AFM-based single-cell adhesion force determination revealed that Rif resistance strengthened the adhesion force of RRE to PE in the environment rich in Rif rather than SMX and KM. The enhanced adhesion force may be due to the higher secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), particularly proteins, by RRE in the presence of Rif compared to the other two antibiotics. In addition, the higher ATP level of RRE would facilitate the initial adhesion and subsequent biofilm growth. Transcriptome analysis of RRE separately cultured in Rif and SMX environments demonstrated a clear correlation between the expression of Rif resistance and the augmented bacterial adhesion and cellular activity. Biofilm biomass analysis confirmed the promotion effect of Rif resistance on biofilm growth when compared to non-resistant biofilms, establishing a novel association with the augmentation of microbial adhesion force. Our study highlights concerns related to the dissemination of antibiotic resistance during microbial colonization on plastic that may arise from antibiotic resistance.
