Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) is the most extensively used polymer for enhanced oil recovery due to its accessibility and low cost. However, HPAM shows inadequacies in high mineralization and high-temperature reservoirs. To solve this problem, a comb-like polymer with superior salt-resistance and stability named CHPAM was prepared via direct free-radical copolymerization of acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA) with the self-designed monomer (Acryloyl-MPEG-1000). The chemical structures of CHPAM and monomers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Static light scattering (SLS) was adopted to measure the molecular weights of CHPAM and HPAM. The solution properties of CHPAM and HPAM were comparatively studied. It was found that CHPAM showed better thermal-salt stability and salt-resistance than HPAM, especially in Ca 2+ solution. This work paves a new way for the preparation of novel polymers.

Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) is generally considered to be one of the most effective methods for imparting high-strength mechanical properties to hydrogel materials. To broaden the application of alginate hydrogel in skeletal muscle or muscle tissue engineering, the interpenetrating network technology and layer-by-layer (LBL) electrostatic assembly were proposed to fabricate the homogeneous alginate/polyacrylamide–chitosan–gelatin (Alg/PAAM–CS–GT) composite hydrogel scaffolds, using the hydroxyapatite/ d -glucono-δ-lactone (HAP/GDL) complex as the gelling system. The effects of different components of alginate/polyacrylamide (Alg/PAAM) on the morphology, mechanical properties, swelling, degradability, and cytocompatibility of the hydrogel scaffolds were comparatively characterized. Experimental results showed that the as-prepared Alg/PAAM–CS–GT composite hydrogel scaffolds exhibited sharp edges and regular 3D structures. Their pore structure could be regulated by changing the content of PAAM in Alg/PAAM–CS–GT composite hydrogel scaffolds. And the filling of PAAM reduced the pores and thickened the pore walls, which obviously enhanced the mechanical properties of Alg/PAAM–CS–GT composite hydrogel scaffolds. FT-IR and thermogravimetric analysis showed that O‧‧‧N hydrogen bonding between COOH of SA and NH 2 of PAAM could be helpful to improve the thermal stability of the composite hydrogel scaffolds. The swelling and biodegradation measurements indicated that the swelling and degradation of Alg/PAAM–CS–GT composite hydrogel scaffolds could be effectively regulated by changing the component content of the composite hydrogel. In addition, the in vitro cytocompatibility analysis showed that the Alg/PAAM–CS–GT composite hydrogel scaffolds could support the growth of MC3T3-E1 cells and promote cell proliferation and differentiation. According to the in vitro cytocompatibility test results, the optimum PAAM content for the Alg/PAAM–CS–GT composite hydrogel scaffolds was 60%. Because of good morphology, well-developed pores, excellent mechanical properties, and high biological activity of Alg/PAAM–CS–GT composite hydrogel scaffolds, they could be suitable for application in the tissue engineering field.

In this research, monodispersed polystyrene (PS) microspheres were prepared by dispersion polymerization. PS microspheres decorated with silver nanoparticles (PS/Ag composite microspheres) were synthesized by a modified chemical plating method with water as the synthesis medium. The microspheres at each stage were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The reduction of methylene blue (MB) was carried out with PS/Ag composite microspheres as a catalyst and NaBH 4 as a reducing agent. The results showed that the MB dye was reduced to colorless within 180 s. The reduction of the MB dye followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with an apparent rate constant (K app ) value of 0.01425 s −1 . Control experiments were also carried out by adding microspheres from each chemical plating pretreatment stage to the MB, without PS/Ag composite microspheres. The catalytic activity of the PS/Ag composite microspheres was high after five consecutive cycles of recovery, showing promising reusability. The catalytic activity of the prepared PS/Ag catalysts was superior to other catalysts for the reduction of MB.

Three difunctional fluorene-based benzoxazine compounds were synthesized via Mannich condensation and were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and elementary analysis (EA). The polymerization of benzoxazine monomers were investigated with differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) method. Thermal properties of the polybenzoxazines were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and DSC. Water absorption of the polybenzoxazines was tested. Contact angle measurement was employed to characterize the surface property of materials. The glass transition temperatures ( T g s) and thermal stability were improved significantly in comparison with bisphenol-A-based analogue because of the incorporation of rigid fluorenyl group. The fluorenyl-based polybenzoxazines showed hydrophobic characteristics, which was ascribed to the low polarity of fluorenyl and pi–pi stacking interaction of fluorenyl on the surface. POLYM. ENG. Polymer ( N , N -dimethyl-ethylamine methacrylate)-block-poly{6-[4-(4-methoxy phenyl-azo) phenoxy] hexylacrylate} p(DMAEMA m - b -AZOM n ) was synthesized by successive reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization in the hydrothermal reactor. The products were characterized by hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance, differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, and ultraviolet and visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis). In H 2 O/THF mixture, we found amphiphilic p(DMAEMA m - b -AZOM n ) self-assembles occurred. p(DMAEMA 79 - b -AZOM 7 ) self-assembled into rods, p(DMAEMA 79 - b -AZOM 5 ) self-assembled into giant microspheres with rods wind around, p(DMAEMA 79 - b -AZOM 2 ) self-assembled into microspheres. Photochromic behaviors of the polymers in different environments were investigated. We found the colors of diblock copolymers in films changed from yellow to orange after irradiation by ultraviolet and visible (UV) light. The rates of trans-cis photoisomerization in films were almost the same for the three p(DMAEMA m - b -AZOM n ) copolymers. The rates in aqueous micellar solutions were only marginally faster than those in films for all the three diblock copolymers. The observation of a sizable rate difference in different environments for p(DMAEMA m - b -AZOM n ) suggested that a rotational mechanism might be operative for these water-soluble amphiphilic diblock copolymers. The self-assembly behaviors of three copolymers and the application of p(DMAEMA 79 - b -AZOM 2 ) microspheres in biochemistry were investigated in present work. POLYM. ENG. Diluents play a critical role in dual-cured polyurethane systems that incorporate both photo and thermal curing mechanisms. Currently, the diluents employed in such systems are predominantly acrylate monomers, with limited exploration of non-acrylate alternatives. Based on this, we selected three diluents for deep study: 4-acryloylmorpholine (ACMO), isodecyl acrylate (IDA), and vinyl ethylene carbonate (VEC) used in Non-isocyanate Polyurethane (NIPU) synthesis. The key factor influencing viscosity was identified as the electrostatic interaction energy between diluent and prepolymer molecules. Compared with ACMO and IDA, the dilution efficiency of VEC was improved by 38.6% and 15.6%, respectively, owing to its higher polarity. VEC remains a small molecule within the system and functions as a plasticizer, leading to improved plasticity of the final material. In contrast, both IDA and ACMO participate in polymerization, forming a secondary network. The distinction lies in their structural contribution: the rigid morpholine ring in ACMO improves the toughness of the material, whereas the flexible chain of IDA imparts notable resilience to the dual-cured polyurethane. These findings advance the understanding of the relationship between diluent structure and the viscosity of the prepolymer and the performance of dual-cured polyurethanes, thereby providing a theoretical foundation for the developing 3D-printable polyurethane materials. Highlights VEC, a monomer from NIPU synthesis, is introduced as an efficient plasticizing diluent. Electrostatic interaction, rather than van der Waals forces, governs diluent efficiency in polyurethane resins. Diluent structure dictates properties: rigid rings boost toughness, flexible chains impart resilience.

This study reports a sandwich-structured composite with polypyrrole (PPy)/modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) outer layers and MXene/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) intermediate layer. The PDMS matrix contains carboxylated carbon nanotubes with Fe 3 O 4 (MWCNT@Fe 3 O 4 ), liquid metal-copper alloy (LM@Cu), carbon fibers, and expanded microspheres. PPy polymerized on PDMS enhances conductivity, while MXene/PVA acts as a reflective layer. Structural, morphological analyses, and simulation confirm the uniform dispersion of fillers, successful Fe 3 O 4 and Cu modifications, and interfacial bonding within the sandwich architecture. The composite shows 2.21 Ω cm resistivity through conductive filler interactions. EMI shielding in X-band reveals 80.57 dB total shielding effectiveness, exceeding individual components (PPy/PDMS: 43.54 dB; MXene/PVA: 5.62 dB). This results from multi-phase shielding: porous PPy/PDMS enables impedance matching and wave absorption, while MXene creates internal reflection cycles. The design achieves 93% wave absorption through gradient conductivity and magnetic-electric synergy, offering a scalable approach for flexible, lightweight shielding materials. Highlights Sandwich composite achieves high EMI shielding of 80.57 dB in X-band. PDMS matrix enhanced by MWCNT@Fe 3 O 4 , LM@Cu, and expanded microspheres. In situ polymerized PPy and MXene/PVA layer enables multi-stage shielding. Innovative design yields 93% EMI absorption and low resistivity of 2.21 Ω cm. Provides a flexible, scalable EMI shielding solution for advanced electronics.

Hydrogels derived from biomacromolecules offer excellent biocompatibility for biomedical applications, yet their limited mechanical strength often restricts broader use. Aramid nanofibers (ANFs) have emerged as high-performance building blocks for nanocomposites, but the influence of their surface states on nodal connectivity and reinforcement efficiency remains insufficiently understood. In this work, we utilize ANFs as a fibrous scaffold to construct composite hydrogels with gelatin. Gelatin coats ANF surfaces through interfacial hydrogen bonding, promoting inter-fiber connections, as confirmed by graph-theoretical analysis of average nodal connectivity. The resulting composite hydrogels can be further cross-linked with tannic acid to form a hierarchical network with markedly enhanced strength and modulus. The incorporation of tannic acid also enables in situ formation of monodisperse silver nanoparticles, imparting antimicrobial functionality. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibit sustained tannic-acid release while maintaining mechanical integrity. This synergistic integration of synthetic ANFs with natural biomolecules provides a robust platform for developing multifunctional hydrogels for biomedical applications. Highlights Exceptional mechanical performance due to strengthened fibrous network. Surface-controlled connectivity elucidated through graph theory analysis. Multifunctionality with strong potential for biomedical applications.

Conductive polymer fabric composites (CPFCs) are high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials featuring high conductivity, low density, flexibility, corrosion resistance, and processability. In this study, flexible hierarchically porous polyketone/silver nanoparticle (HPPK/Ag) core-shell nanofibers were fabricated via electrospinning followed by in situ silver deposition. The successful construction of the Ag coating was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. With increasing Ag content, both the electrical conductivity and EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of the HPPK/Ag membranes were significantly enhanced while retaining excellent flexibility and stability under mechanical deformation. The HPPK/Ag-20 hybrid membranes with a density of 0.26 g/cm 3 and thickness of 100 μm, achieved the maximum SSE and SSE/t values of 184.94 dB cm 3 /g and 17513.86 dB cm 2 /g across the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz), respectively. This superior performance is attributed to a synergistic shielding mechanism: the continuous conductive Ag network induces strong reflection at the surface, while the hierarchically porous core facilitates efficient absorption loss through intensive interfacial polarization and multiple internal reflections. These results indicate that HPPK/Ag hybrid membranes are highly promising as lightweight and thin EMI shielding materials for wearable electronics. Highlights Porous flexible HPPK films were prepared by phase separation principle. The porous structure of HPPK nanofibers facilitated in situ Ag deposition. HPPK/Ag films exhibited high mechanical stability under mechanical deformation. Both reflection and absorption contribute to the enhanced EMI SE.

Marine biofouling adversely affects the operational performance of marine infrastructure. A promising solution to this challenge involves fabricating PET fibers with inherent antifouling properties via chemical bonding. Inspired by the design concept that zwitterionic structures can form highly ordered hydration layers via electrostatic interactions, thereby reducing foulant adhesion, this study proposes a strategy for developing marine antifouling PET fibers. By grafting primary amine-terminated sulfobetaine onto PET fibers, grafted fibers with antifouling capabilities were obtained. Laser scanning confocal microscopy was used to examine the adhesion of algae and proteins on the fiber surfaces. The results demonstrated that the grafted fibers exhibited significant resistance to algal and protein attachment, along with effective antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Furthermore, colorimetric crystal violet assays confirmed the inhibitory effect of the grafted fibers on biofilm formation. The development of this novel antifouling PET fibers offer a potential approach to addressing biofouling issues in deep-sea aquaculture cages. Highlights PET fibers are dopamine-treated to add reactive surface sites. Sulfated betaine was grafted onto fibers via its N-terminal amine. Grafted fibers resist adhesion by bacteria, proteins, and algae.

The viscosity and elasticity of water-soluble polymers are critical in the petroleum industry, particularly under high-temperature and high-salinity conditions. In this study, a multi-armed hydrazide-POSS (HPOSS) and a carbonyl-functionalized hydrophobic association polymer (CFHAP) were developed to create dual networks (CFHAP/HPOSS). Unlike conventional binary cross-linkers, HPOSS promoted the formation of dense and stable covalent cross-linked structures. Even at low concentrations of both CFHAP and HPOSS, CFHAP/HPOSS exhibited robust network formation with exceptional thickening properties, achieving a significantly higher viscosity of 3927 mPa·s at 2 g/L compared to the polymer's 410 mPa s and the binary cross-linking system's 2453 mPa s. Under a 40 g/L Na + solution, CFHAP/HPOSS exhibited salt responsiveness by enhancing their hydrophobic network, resulting in a viscosity of 5325 mPa s and a modulus G′ > G″. These enhanced rheological properties were further utilized to improve aqueous foam stability. The results revealed improved foam stability with an extended half-life time (8248 s), low drainage rate (0.0064 g/s maximum), and minimal bubble size distribution variation. SEM images also reveal a fully formed polymer film network, which effectively inhibits foam drainage and coarsening. Our strategy provides valuable insights into developing new materials with adjustable thickening and elastic properties. Highlights A multi-armed hydrazide-POSS is synthesized and used as a crosslinking agent. Dynamic acylhydrazone bond is used to fabricate a network with enough stability. Hydrophobic interaction is used to fabricate a network with salt responsiveness. The prepared polymer exhibits improved viscosity and elasticity.

The present study aims to develop high-performance perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) capable of operating under diverse service conditions. Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate the microscopic interactions between various nanofillers and the FFKM matrix. This included analyses of energy variations, radial distribution functions, and molecular chain orientation. A series of complementary experimental characterizations were conducted in order to examine the tensile failure behavior and elucidate the microscopic mechanisms of friction and wear. The results confirmed the accuracy of the microscopic interaction mechanisms obtained from simulation. An appropriate increase in hardness effectively enhanced tensile strength and modulus while reducing both the friction coefficient and wear rate. The incorporation of nanomaterials has been demonstrated to transform the tensile failure mode of FFKM from predominantly brittle fracture to predominantly plastic deformation. Among the composites, carbon nanotubes/perfluoroelastomer exhibited the best overall mechanical performance, graphene nanosheets/perfluoroelastomer demonstrated the lowest friction coefficient, and nano-silica/perfluoroelastomer showed superior cleanliness performance, making it advantageous in applications requiring high purity. Summary MD simulations reveal the microscopic interactions of nanocomposites. The mechanical properties of CNT/FFKM are more excellent. The Friction coefficient of GN/FFKM is lower. Hardness can effectively improve the performance of materials. Nano-fillers have changed the failure mode of composite materials.
