Composition, source appointment and bio-migration of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the Fu River of Wuhan, China

Shi Si,Zhang Zijie,Wang Rong,Xue Shiji,Fei Wanyu,Peng Yue’e

In this study, a detailed analysis of 20 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including 13 perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) (C4–C18), four perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs) (C4, C6, C8, C10), and three polyfluoroalkyl substances, in different environmental media of Fu River, which was the main sewage storage body, and located near the Tianhe Airport in Wuhan, China. In the surface water samples, short-chain PFAS, perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) were the most prevalent, and highest concentrations of 168 ng/L and 49.7 ng/L, respectively. However, in the sediment samples, PFBS and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were the most prevalent, and highest concentrations of 840 ng/kg and 1510 ng/kg, respectively. Meanwhile, PFOS was the most prevalent substance, with the highest concentrations measured at 23.3 μg/kg in egg yolk and 28.1 μg/kg in fish, accounting for proportions of 82% and 88%, respectively. Two new short-chain substitutes of PFOS, 6:2 clorinated polyfluoroalykyl ether sulfonate (6:2 Cl-PFESA) and 8:2 clorinated polyfluoroalykyl ether sulfonate (8:2 Cl-PFESA), emerged in sediment and fish. The PFAS in eggs, fish, and vegetables of Fu River Basin poses a potential health risk to residents according to the suggested value of the European Food Safety Agency.

Efficient removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from stored rainwater by composite metal salt /polydimethyldiallylammonium chloride coagulants

Junhao Huang,Gangfu Song,Mingming Hao,Yitian He,Haotian Hao,Ruihua Li,Baoyou Shi,Xin Huang

ABSTRACT Stored rainwater, the primary source of drinking water in the villages and towns of the Loess Plateau in northwest China, has been found to contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and lacks necessary treatment measures. Coagulation is a common water treatment process, and enhancing its efficacy in removing PFASs can significantly improve treatment efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize the environmental and health risks associated with perfluorinated compounds. This study investigated the removal efficiency of perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) using inorganic salt coagulants alone and in combination with polydimethyldiallylammonium chloride (PDMDAAC). The results indicated that the removal efficiencies of the four PFASs by polyferric chloride (PFCl) and polyaluminum chloride (PACl) increased with alkalinity. PDMDAAC significantly enhanced the coagulation removal efficiency of the four PFASs. The removal efficiency of the four PFASs was highest when the raw water pH was near 7. Within the molecular weight range of 0 to 500,000 for PDMDAAC, the removal efficiency of the four PFASs increased with increasing molecular weight. Charge neutralization is the primary coagulation mechanism for the removal of anionic PFASs. Therefore, this study provides guidance for selecting coagulants to remove PFASs from stored rainwater.

Enhanced electrochemical degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by activating persulfate on boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode

Lirong Zhao,Ruoqi Pu,Shihuai Deng,Lili Lin,Dionissios Mantzavinos,Ravi Naidu,Cheng Fang,Yongjia Lei

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remediation remains a challenge, especially for real samples such as aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) for fire-fighting and PFAS foam fractionate concentrates (FF) produced from the water treatment processes. In this study, electrochemical advanced oxidation process (EAOP) using boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode to activate persulfate (PS) was investigated. The results shown that the electrochemical activation of PS significantly enhanced the removal of PFAS, including oxidation and defluorination. Under the optimal conditions (initial current density of 40 mA/cm 2 , 5 mM PS, initial pH 3.8), both 50 μM PFOA and 50 μM PFOS reached ∼100 % removal within 2 h, and 60.4 % and 33.1 % defluorination, respectively. By monitoring the degradation intermediates, the degradation pathways and kinetics of PFOA and PFOS were studied, which indicated the excellent capability of BDD/PS process towards the PFAS remediation. In addition, the optimal BDD/PS process was applied to degrade AFFF and FF samples, and the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay was used to measure the defluorination effect. The results were unprecedented with a surprising >100 % defluorination for 28 PFAS tested. This research can contribute to the development of a sustainable and efficient technology for PFAS remediation, ultimately mitigating the environmental and health risks associated with these persistent contaminants.

An Ultrasensitive Single-Particle Collision Electrochemical Immunoassay at Subfemtogram-per-Milliliter Levels via Cascaded Hybridization Chain Reaction Amplification

Jieyu Zhang,Qingying Gao,Fangfang Yang,Jing Yu,Shufeng Liu

Herein, we developed an ultrasensitive single-particle collision-based electrochemical immunosensing platform for detecting a total prostate-specific antigen (tPSA) as a model target. It relies on the collision events resulting from the enzyme-catalyzed, in situ generated silver shells on gold nanoparticles. To boost the sensitivity of the method, a branched hybridization chain reaction (bHCR) was employed to introduce abundant alkaline phosphatase (ALP) for signal amplification. Initially, target tPSA and an aptamer-linker DNA conjugate were captured on the antibody-coated plate. The terminal ends of the DNA probe subsequently served as initiators to trigger the bHCR process. This cascade reaction created multiple binding sites for ALP and thereby accelerated the production of ascorbic acid (AA). The generated AA subsequently mediates the reduction of silver ions, facilitating the formation of silver shells on the Au NPs and yielding detectable collision signals from Au@Ag NPs. As a result, the concentration of tPSA can be directly reflected and quantified by the recorded collision signals. Benefiting from the dual signal amplification of bHCR and Au NP metallization, the collision immunosensor achieved a highly sensitive tPSA detection with a detection limit as low as 0.07 fg/mL. Besides the excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and anti-interference ability, the practical applicability of the method was validated using serum samples. This work provides a robust and ultrasensitive platform for immunological analysis, holding promising potential for clinical diagnostics.

Occurrence characteristics and source appointment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in rainwater from megacities to remote cities

Fuxiang Tang,Li Jiang,Bo Yuan,Qing Zeng,Qiao Cheng,Zhuo Zeng,Chuyang Hu,Hui Zhang,Hongling Yin

Wet deposition serves as a critical process for removing atmospheric pollutants. To explore the occurrence and source disparities of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in atmosphere between a megacity and its surrounding areas at varying distances, wet precipitation samples were collected and analyzed from Chengdu (Shuangliu), Wenchuan, and Barkam sites. The results indicated that among the 74 target compounds, approximately 40 PFAS were detected in all samples with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) being the predominant monomers, jointly contributing 29.5% to 44.0% of the total PFAS. The highest PFAS wet deposition flux was observed in Chengdu (mean: 1349.86 ng·m -2 ·d -1 ), reflecting the influence of intensive anthropogenic activities. The flux in Wenchuan (1092.47 ng·m -2 ·d -1 ) was 3.73 times higher than that in Barkam (293.25 ng·m -2 ·d -1 ). The Kruskal-Wallis H test and permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) test revealed that the concentrations, sources or migration processes differed among three locations. The role of long-range transport in governing PFAS occurrence in remote regions-Barkam was convinced by backward trajectory analysis. The finding provided crucial scientific insights for understanding the transport and fate of emerging contaminants at the regional scale.

Structure-activity relationship of per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances as inhibitors of human and rat 17β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3

Chengshuang Pan,Jingjing Li,Fuhong Tian,Chentao Ding,Shaowei Wang,Ren-shan Ge,Qianjin Fei,Yang Zhu

Per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals as carboxylic acid (PFCA) and sulfonic acid (PFSA) found in everyday products, from non-stick cookware to waterproof clothing, and are potential endocrine disruptors. However, whether they inhibit 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3 (17β-HSD3) and structure-activity relationship (SAR) and mode of action remains unclear. In this study, we screened 18 PFAS (11 PFCAs and 7 PFSAs) with different carbon-chain lengths from C4 to C14 to inhibit human and rat 17β-HSD3 from HSD17B3 -overexpressed LNCaP cells and rat testicular microsomes. Of the 11 PFCAs, 6 compounds significantly inhibited human 17β-HSD3, with IC 50 values ranging from 5.36 (C10) to 145.15 μM (C8) and a V-shaped turn at C10, and of the 7 PFSAs, only perfluorooctanesulfonic acid markedly inhibited this enzyme (IC 50 , 5.87 μM). Of the 18 PFAS, only 6 PFCAs inhibited rat 17β-HSD3, with IC 50 values ranging from 14.2 (C10) to no inhibition at 100 μM (C8). These PFAS are mixed/noncompetitive inhibitors of human and rat 17β-HSD3 enzymes. Molecular docking studies suggest that the degree of inhibition is linked to the carbon-chain length of the PFAS molecule. 3D-QSAR indicates that structural hydrophobic regions determine the inhibitory potency up to C10 (PFDA). Our in vitro observation of 17β-HSD3 inhibition represents a putative upstream mechanistic factor that may contribute to elevated reproductive dysfunction and hypogonadism risk reported in existing human epidemiological PFAS exposure cohorts. In conclusion, PFAS inhibit human and rat 17β-HSD3 with clear SAR and carbon-chain length determines their inhibitory potency, and C10 PFCA is the most potent inhibitor of human and rat 17β-HSD3.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Surface Water of Fuyang River (Handan Section): Occurrence, Source Apportionment, and Risk Assessment

Xiaoying Pan,Lifeng Wu,Dong Wang

Perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), as an emerging type of pollutant, always pollute water quality to a certain extent. The occurrence, source, and risk of PFASs in the Fuyang River are not well understood. For the first time, the state of PFASs in the upper Fuyang River (Handan section) was investigated. The results showed that there were 10 types of PFASs with concentrations higher than the limit of quantitation in the surface water of the Fuyang River. The surface waterρ(∑PFASs) ranges from 13.80 to 22.88ng·L−1. The highest quality score is perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), which is 59.40%. PFASs are mainly composed of long-chain substances. PFASs generally show a trend of gradually increasing downstream. PFASs have the same source, mainly from industrial activities around rivers and rainfall inputs. Principal component analysis shows that PFASs mainly come from the leather and textile manufacturing industries, fluoropolymer production, and electroplating metal industries. The concentration of PFASs in the Fuyang River has not yet affected ecology and health.

Exploring the Relationships Between Exposure Levels of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Prostate Cancer Occurrence in Southwest China

Guo Jiaqi,Hu Zifan,Sun Weiyang,Li Jia,Huang Xinyi,Zhou Xianghong,Zhang Zilong,Jin Yuming,Huang Weichao,Luo Chunying,Harada Koji,Qiu Shi,Zou Xiaoli

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as endocrine disruptors, may increase the risk of prostate cancer by interfering with the endocrine system, however, current population-based evidence is still limited, and there are relative few types of PFAS involved. This study aims to investigate the association between exposure to 18 kinds of PFAS and the incidence of prostate cancer in southwest China. In the case–control study, plasma samples from 97 PCa patients and 111 controls without a family history were analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS. The association between PFAS concentrations and prostate cancer was analyzed using Mann–Whitney U tests and Bayesian logistic regression. The detection limits of the proposed UPLC-MS/MS method ranged from 0.00070 to 0.30 ng/mL. The detection rate of most PFAS is greater than 75%, except for Perfluorodecanesulfonic acid (PFDS), Perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), Perfluorohexadecanoic acid (PFHxDA), Perfluorooctadecanoic acid (PFODA), Perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA), Perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PFTeDA). Mann–Whitney U test results showed that differences in Perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), Perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), Perfluoroheptanesulfonic acid (PFHpS), Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), and Perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) between the two groups were statistically significant, suggesting that exposure to these compounds may be associated with prostate cancer occurrence. Bayesian analysis showed no significant correlation for several PFAS, but Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) [OR 2 ≥4.02  = 2.86, 95% CI 2 (1.64, 6.28)], Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) [OR 2 ≥1.61  = 3.82, 95% CI 2 (1.22, 16.08)], and PFUnDA [OR 2 ≥0.462  = 7.14, 95% CI 2 (1.12, 68.7)] demonstrated a positive correlation in high-concentration groups. Conversely, PFOS showed a negative correlation after adjustment [OR 2 ≥3.71  = 0.97, 95% CI 2 (0.87, 0.99)]. These results suggest a potential link between PFAS exposure and prostate cancer in the Chinese population, warranting further research.

Palladium/Palladium Oxide Nanosheet Heterostructures by Partial Reduction for Sub-Parts per Million Hydrogen Detection at Room Temperature

Rui Yang,Jian Wu,Jaafar Abdul-Aziz Mehrez,Xue Liu,Yaozong Zhai,Xiao Li,Yuyang Wang,Jianhua Yang,Nantao Hu,Min Zeng,Hao Zhu,Zhi Yang

To address the energy crisis and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, substantial investments are advancing hydrogen (H2) technologies. Reliable, efficient room-temperature H2 sensors are critical for ensuring safe H2 production and utilization. Here, we report a palladium/palladium oxide (Pd/PdO) nanosheet composite capable of detecting H2 concentrations as low as 0.5 ppm at room temperature. The sensor exhibits exceptional stability, maintaining this detection limit after four months under ambient conditions. The superior H2 sensing performance stems from two key features: (1) the ultrathin nanosheet morphology, which offers abundant reactive sites, and (2) Pd nanoregions that enhance chemical and electronic sensitization. Together, these attributes synergistically elevate room-temperature H2 detection. This work demonstrates a promising strategy for advancing H2 sensor performance, supporting the transition to a hydrogen-based economy.

Uniform spherical covalent organic framework for efficient extraction of 13 per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances in Chinese medicinal materials

Ziyue Ni,Yiran Zhou,Meng Shan,Ting Gui,Junhong Xin,Yunlun Li

Long-term consumption or exposure to Chinese medicinal materials contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) poses a potential risk to human health. Owing to the low contents of PFASs in the complex matrix of Chinese medicinal materials, it is imperative to develop high-performance adsorbents for the enrichment of PFASs prior to analysis. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are widely used as adsorbents because of their large surface area and good chemical stability. In this study, C N bonded spherical TPB-DMTP-COF was prepared by a simple Schiff base reaction using acetonitrile as solvent at room temperature. The materials exhibited abundant porous structures, exceptional hydrophobicity, superb thermostability, excellent crystalline structure, and a substantial surface area of 1419 m 2 g −1 and thus could be outstanding adsorbents for solid-phase extraction (SPE) of PFASs. The adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacity and adsorption rate of PFASs increased with the extension of alkyl carbon chain of PFASs molecule. In essence, the strong adsorption affinity could be attributed to the hydrophobic characteristics and Van der Waals force. The proposed approach based on SPE and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry achieved low limits of detection (0.01–0.04 μg kg −1 ), good precision (< 4.7%) and excellent linearity for PFASs ranging from 0.1 to 10 ng mL −1 (R 2  ≥ 0.997). The actual amounts of PFASs varied from 0.08 μg kg −1 to 2.67 μg kg −1 in seven Chinese medicinal materials. The satisfactory recoveries (91.6%–105.8%) and good repeatability (12 times) for simultaneous analysis of 13 PFASs were obtained. This research presents a promising alternative for the sensitive analysis of PFASs at trace levels in complex matrices.

Irrigation-introduced quinolone antibiotics activated the soil-water interface redistribution of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in paddy fields

Jianyi Wu,Xinlin Huang,Miao Chen,Lingxuan Li,Wenhui Zhao,Wenqing Tu

Quinolone antibiotic pollution (QAP) introduced by irrigation may cause the release of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) at the soil-water interface in paddy fields, endangering the growth of rice crops and the security of human food sources. Thus, the comprehensive investigation of the joint and individual effects of quinolone antibiotics with environment-relevant concentrations on the soil PFASs migration were conducted. Results showed that the QAP dose of 1 μg/L had the highest activation for the release of PFASs into the overlying water, resulting in the highest net concentration of 99.32 μg/L. Structural equation modeling revealed that the QAP-mediated microbial adsorption was the hub transition for PFASs migration ( p  < 0.001). The PFASs re-partitioning after QAP was primarily driven by physicochemistry and nutrient cycling variations induced by QAP, which was facilitated by soil microbial urease and acid phosphatase. The soil microbial genes nasC , nasE , phnG , nasD , napD , phnA , nirK , nosZ , and nasB were identified as the critical regulators of PFASs migration under QAP by the aggregate boosted tree modeling. Molecularly, the soil microbial metabolisms of Galactosylglycerol and 3-beta-D-Galactosyl-sn-glycerol were responsible for PFASs release under the QAP level of 1 μg/L ( p  < 0.001). These findings were beneficial in elucidating the ecological risks of bioavailable PFASs in paddy fields subjected to the integrated pollution of quinolone antibiotics.

Screening Method for the Determination of per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Textiles by Combustion and Ion Chromatography

Cao Lihua,Ding Youchao,Qian Kai,Wang Xiangxiang,Wang Xiaoqiong,Zhou Jia,Tang Juan

A screening method was developed for the determination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in textiles by combustion and ion chromatography. In this work, a new type of high-temperature combustion absorption device was designed, and the samples were burned, cracked and gasified by temperature programmed heating mode. The produced free fluorine and hydrogen fluoride gases were absorbed by water vapor and completely transformed into inorganic fluoride anion. After condensation and collection, it was separated and determined by ion chromatography. The pre-treatment conditions were optimized including the sample weight, the combustion method, the combustion gas and its flow rate, the water evaporation rate and the condensate collection method. Method validation was performed in negative samples of cotton, wool and polyester, at spiked levels of 5, 50 and 200 mg/kg, respectively. The average recoveries were between 85.7 and 95.0% with relative standard deviations <20% (n = 7) indicating satisfactory accuracy and repeatability. The calibration curve was performed with the correlation coefficients (R2) higher than 0.999 within a linearity range of 0.01–2.0 mg/L. The limit of quantification was 5.0 mg/kg. The developed method was successfully used to determine the total fluorine in market samples. It can meet the screening determination of PFAS in various textiles.
