Tailoring the surface pleat morphology of polyamide nanofiltration (NF) membranes allows for targeted modulation of their performance, thereby optimizing membrane functionality for diverse application scenarios. This approach has emerged as a critical research direction in membrane technology, particularly industrial applications. In this study, the precise modulation of the polymerization rate, molecular diffusion behavior, and interfacial reaction kinetics was achieved by adding LiCl. By leveraging the synergistic effects of Li + coordination with carbonyl groups and the interfacial thermal phenomena, a nesting-doll structure featuring multiple filtration interfaces was successfully engineered. This significantly enhances the separation efficiency of NF membranes. Consequently, the prepared NF membranes exhibit notable advantages in natural surface water treatment. Specifically, the uniquely designed nesting-doll membrane (PIP–Li@3) achieved 89.5 % and 95.9 % removal rates for dissolved organic carbon and fluorescent organics, respectively. The PIP-Li@3 demonstrated exceptional efficacy in treating complex and difficult-to-remove per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Compared to NF270, the PIP-Li@3 exhibits superior removal performance for PFAS of varying molecular weights, achieving a rejection rate of 98.4 % for perfluorooctanoic acid. This work presents a green and efficient method for removing PFAS from surface water by preparing NF membranes with a unique nesting-doll morphology by regulating the two-stage IP reaction rate.

The widespread use of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has raised serious environmental and public health concerns, driving the urgent need for effective and scalable removal technologies. In this study, we present a surfactant-assisted ultrafiltration (UF) strategy for enhanced PFAS separation through leveraging in situ assembly of PFAS molecules with the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The addition of CTAB (0.14 mM) induces the formation of nanoscale complexes or micelles with PFAS, thus promoting their effective retention by UF membranes (99.1% for 0.14 mM CTAB vs 30.3% without CTAB). Moreover, both experimental and modeling results reveal a concentration polarization effect that leads to the accumulation of CTAB on the membrane surface. As such, even when the bulk concentration of CTAB is below its critical micelle concentration, localized micelle formation occurs near the membrane interface, enabling effective retention of PFAS. Notably, the CTAB-enhanced UF process is also effective in retaining other PFAS species, especially long-chain compounds such as PFHxA. Further experiments indicate that compared with electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions between PFOA and CTAB play a more dominant role in forming micelles, thereby governing the subsequent retention by UF membranes. This study offers mechanistic insights into surfactant-mediated PFAS removal and presents a scalable, low-pressure membrane strategy for the effective treatment of PFAS-contaminated water.

Iron-modified biochar has been investigated as an adsorbent and catalyst for the removal of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from wastewater. However, the influence of different forms of iron-modified biochar on the adsorption effect and catalytic activity of PFAS is unclear. This study prepared four distinct forms of biochar: Fe 0 /BC, Fe₂O₃/BC, Fe(OH)₃/BC, and Fe₃O₄/BC. Their adsorption capacities for PFOS, PFOA, PFHxA, PFBA, and PFBS were compared. The catalytic activity towards peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and the contribution made by reactive radicals were investigated. The results showed that for long-chain PFAS, all three biochar samples except Fe(OH) 3 /BC showed high adsorption capacity. For short-chain PFAS, the adsorption capacities of Fe 2 O 3 /BC and Fe 3 O 4 /BC were much higher than those of the other two biochar types. Fe 3 O 4 /BC showed better catalytic activity for PMS activation. SO 4 · − and ·O 2 - played a major role in the whole PFAS removal process, and ·OH contributed less to PFAS removal. Fe 3 O 4 /BC is an eco-friendly, low-cost, and highly efficient adsorbent material and catalyst with excellent recycling ability. It has good application prospects for removing PFAS contamination from water, especially for short-chain PFAS, and has more advantages than other forms of iron-modified biochar.

A novel spin-state engineering strategy was developed via La doping to break the “oxo wall” and boost high-valent Co(IV)=O generation for efficient per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) degradation. This was achieved by constructing unsaturated CoO 3 single atoms anchored on La-doped MCM-48 (CoLa@MCM-48) via one-pot synthesis, which enabled synergistic activation of peroxymonosulfate and ozone. The optimized catalyst achieved 99.5 % degradation of PFASs substitute sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS) in 30 min, while maintaining robust performance across diverse water matrices. The incorporation of La induces asymmetric lattice strain through its large ionic radius and spin-orbit coupling, transforming the Co coordination geometry from conventional octahedral symmetry to an unsaturated trigonal planar CoO 3 configuration with a high-spin state, thereby enhancing the 88.8 % generation of Co(IV)=O. This work establishes heteroatom-mediated spin-state engineering for designing high-performance non-radical catalysts to remediate recalcitrant pollutants.

The persistence and ecological impact of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water sources necessitate effective and energy-efficient treatment solutions. This study introduces a novel approach using cerium dioxide (CeO 2 ) electrodes enhanced with oxygen vacancy (O v ) to catalyze the defluorination of PFAS. By leveraging the unique affinity between cerium and fluorine-containing species, our approach enables adsorptive preconcentration and catalytic degradation at low oxidation potentials (1.37 V vs. SHE). Demonstrating high removal and defluorination efficiencies of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) at 94.0% and 73.0%, respectively, our approach also proves effective in the environmental matrix. It minimizes the impacts of co-existing natural organic matter and chloride ions, crucial benefits of operating at lower oxidation potentials. The role of O v in CeO 2 is validated by both experimental results and density functional theory modeling, demonstrating that these sites can activate the C–F bond and substantially reduce the energy barriers for defluorination. Consequently, our CeO 2 -based method not only achieves defluorination efficiencies comparable to more energy-intensive techniques but does so while requiring less than 0.62 kWh/m 3 per order. This positions our approach as a promising, cost-effective alternative for the remediation of PFAS-contaminated waters, emphasizing its relevance and effectiveness in environmental remediation scenarios.

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have emerged as contaminants of global concern due to their persistence and potential health risks. PFASs pose potential pollution risks in mango cultivation and production. This study investigated pollution characteristics and conducted a comprehensive risk assessment of PFASs in soil–mango systems within the Nanfan District of Hainan, China. The results revealed that total PFAS concentrations in soil ranged from 0.18 to 1.07 ng/g, with PFHpA and PFHxA accounting for 24.9% and 21.0%, respectively. Total PFAS concentrations in mangoes ranged from 0.0019 to 0.0201 ng/g wet weight, where PFHxA and PFHpA accounted for 44.02% and 30.28%, respectively. For all PFASs, the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) in mangoes was <1, indicating limited transfer from soil to fruits. Regarding PFAS contamination sources, long-range atmospheric transport may serve as the primary pathway for PFAS contamination in soil and mangoes. Risk assessments indicated minimal ecological and dietary exposure risks, with soil ecological risk quotients (RQs) below 0.01 and edible exposure RQs below 1. This study highlights the unique contribution of short-chain PFAS to the quality and safety of tropical agricultural products and provides critical data for the safety regulation of PFASs in soil–fruit systems.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous emerging contaminants in indoor environments, yet the development of high-affinity antibodies for immunoassays remains hindered by the intrinsic immunological inertness of PFAS. Here, we present a descriptor-guided hapten design strategy that addresses this limitation by quantitatively linking the physicochemical features of PFAS to hapten spacer engineering. Using quantum-chemistry-derived molecular descriptors, we designed three perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)-based haptens that preserved the structural identity of the perfluoroalkyl chain while enhancing the immunogenic suitability of the resulting immunogens. As predicted, all three spacer-engineered haptens elicited markedly improved immune responses compared with direct PFOA conjugation. Among them, H1 emerged as the optimal design owing to its most balanced descriptor profile, enabling the generation of a high-affinity monoclonal antibody, mAb12 × 108. This antibody recognized four perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (C6–C9) and four perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (C5–C8), with icELISA IC50 values of 9.6–117.4 ng/mL. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) analysis further confirmed the high-affinity of mAb12 × 108, yielding a KD of 36.6 nM toward PFOA. Structural modeling and molecular docking revealed a chain-length-dependent recognition mechanism governed by the geometry of the antibody binding pocket. Based on mAb12 × 108, a chemiluminescent indirect competitive ELISA (CL-icELISA) was established for indoor dust analysis, achieving a limit of detection of 2.19 μg/kg. In practical validation, 40 field-collected indoor dust samples were screened within 1.5 h, and high-positive samples were further confirmed by UPLC–MS/MS with concentration deviations of less than 20%, demonstrating a practical screen-then-confirm workflow for high-frequency PFAS monitoring.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remediation remains a challenge, especially for real samples such as aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) for fire-fighting and PFAS foam fractionate concentrates (FF) produced from the water treatment processes. In this study, electrochemical advanced oxidation process (EAOP) using boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode to activate persulfate (PS) was investigated. The results shown that the electrochemical activation of PS significantly enhanced the removal of PFAS, including oxidation and defluorination. Under the optimal conditions (initial current density of 40 mA/cm 2 , 5 mM PS, initial pH 3.8), both 50 μM PFOA and 50 μM PFOS reached ∼100 % removal within 2 h, and 60.4 % and 33.1 % defluorination, respectively. By monitoring the degradation intermediates, the degradation pathways and kinetics of PFOA and PFOS were studied, which indicated the excellent capability of BDD/PS process towards the PFAS remediation. In addition, the optimal BDD/PS process was applied to degrade AFFF and FF samples, and the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay was used to measure the defluorination effect. The results were unprecedented with a surprising >100 % defluorination for 28 PFAS tested. This research can contribute to the development of a sustainable and efficient technology for PFAS remediation, ultimately mitigating the environmental and health risks associated with these persistent contaminants.

Nanobubbles (NBs) have been utilized to enhance the removal of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water. However, the effectiveness of NBs under various operational conditions, including varying PFAS concentrations, pH levels, and the presence of coexisting ions, has remained insufficiently explored. A deeper understanding of these interfacial interactions is crucial to optimizing and maximizing the efficiency of NBs in PFAS removal. This study aims to bridge these knowledge gaps by systematically exploring the role of NBs in augmenting the adsorption of legacy PFAS on various carbon-based adsorbents, including granular activated carbon (GAC), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene. Our experimental results demonstrated a significant improvement in PFAS adsorption on carbon-based adsorbents in the presence of NBs, with the enhancement effect particularly pronounced at a high initial PFAS concentration (50 mg L–1). Acidic conditions notably facilitated PFAS removal in the NB-assisted carbon adsorption system, aligning well with the predictions from the Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory. Furthermore, ionic strength was found to play a critical role, with lower levels stabilizing NBs and promoting interactions with adsorbent surfaces, while higher levels reduced the effectiveness of NBs. Additionally, multivalent cations (particularly Fe3+) showed a substantially greater enhancement in PFAS removal efficiency compared to Na+ and Ca2+. This study deepens the understanding of NB-assisted PFAS removal using carbon-based adsorbents and provides practical insights into optimizing treatment processes.

The extreme persistence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), exemplified by perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), demands remediation technologies that surpass conventional approaches. This study introduces a novel closed-loop adsorption–regeneration–distillation–plasma (ARDP) process designed for high-efficiency PFOA removal with low energy and chemical consumption. Comparative evaluation of anion-exchange resins identified D311 (macroporous methyl polyacrylate) as the optimal adsorbent. In batch experiments with an initial PFOA concentration of 100 mg/L, D311 achieved an adsorption capacity of ~20 mg/g, exhibited rapid kinetics, and achieved high regeneration efficiency (up to 100% under optimized conditions) via a methanol–NaCl solution. Distillation of the spent regenerant recovered approximately 80% of methanol while simultaneously concentrating PFOA for subsequent destruction, accomplished by utilizing waste heat from the plasma system, without the need for additional thermal energy input. Subsequent dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment of the residue achieved 100% PFOA degradation and up to 69% defluorination. The ARDP process proves to be a highly sustainable strategy, characterized by a low specific energy input (4.15 kWh/m3) and minimized secondary waste, making it a promising approach for practical PFAS remediation.

Wet deposition serves as a critical process for removing atmospheric pollutants. To explore the occurrence and source disparities of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in atmosphere between a megacity and its surrounding areas at varying distances, wet precipitation samples were collected and analyzed from Chengdu (Shuangliu), Wenchuan, and Barkam sites. The results indicated that among the 74 target compounds, approximately 40 PFAS were detected in all samples with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) being the predominant monomers, jointly contributing 29.5% to 44.0% of the total PFAS. The highest PFAS wet deposition flux was observed in Chengdu (mean: 1349.86 ng·m -2 ·d -1 ), reflecting the influence of intensive anthropogenic activities. The flux in Wenchuan (1092.47 ng·m -2 ·d -1 ) was 3.73 times higher than that in Barkam (293.25 ng·m -2 ·d -1 ). The Kruskal-Wallis H test and permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) test revealed that the concentrations, sources or migration processes differed among three locations. The role of long-range transport in governing PFAS occurrence in remote regions-Barkam was convinced by backward trajectory analysis. The finding provided crucial scientific insights for understanding the transport and fate of emerging contaminants at the regional scale.

l -ascorbic acid regulates the interfacial polymerization microenvironment. • A thinner polyamide layer with enhanced negative charge and a more uniform pore structure was obtained. • AA-3 increases water permeance by 38% while maintaining approximately 96% Na 2 SO 4 rejection. • AA-3 achieves 84.7–99.8% rejection for 17 PFAS under the tested conditions. The global occurrence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) poses a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems and human health, thereby necessitating the development of advanced water purification technologies. In this study, l -ascorbic acid (AA) was introduced as a multifunctional regulator into the interfacial polymerization (IP) of piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride, providing a green and sustainable route for fabricating high-flux nanofiltration (NF) membranes. Owing to its abundant hydroxyl groups, AA alters the aqueous-phase reaction environment and reduces PIP transport toward the water/organic interface, thereby moderating the IP process and promoting the formation of a thinner and more uniform nanonodular PA layer. Among the tested membranes, AA-3 was selected as the optimized membrane because it provided the most favorable overall balance between water permeance and selectivity, achieving a water permeance of 21.0 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 while maintaining 95.9% Na 2 SO 4 rejection. When applied to treat river water affected by saltwater intrusion, the membrane demonstrated effective purification performance while allowing partial passage of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ions. Furthermore, the membrane exhibited excellent removal efficiencies for 17 PFAS compounds, with rejection ranging from 84.7 to 99.8%. These results demonstrate that AA-regulated IP offers a promising strategy for developing next-generation environmentally friendly NF membranes for efficient PFAS control and drinking water protection.
