Rational design of MOFs-based three-component mixed matrix membranes for efficient propylene/propane separation and physical aging mitigation

Qishuo Chang,Hongke Li,Jing Ma,Yanwu Zhang,Guanying Dong,Dongyang Li,Jing Wang,Yatao Zhang

Membrane materials with high gas permeation and satisfied selectivity are crucial for achieving efficient C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation. Although PIM-1 membranes have drawn tremendous attention in gas separation, their broader application is hampered by intrinsic aging phenomenon and relatively low C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 selectivity. In this work, the Ni(AIP)(BPY) 0.5 (defined as Ni-MOF) with thermodynamic and kinetic synergistic separation effect on C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 was introduced to PIM-1/Matrimid 5218 blend matrix for preparing mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) to overcome the drawbacks of PIM-1. Benefiting from the rapid C 3 H 6 transport channel of Ni-MOF, the PIM-Matrimid/Ni-MOF-7 MMMs exhibit exceptional separation properties, achieving C 3 H 6 permeability of 1762.5 Barrer and C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 selectivity of 8.5 (increased by 107% over PIM-1 membranes). Moreover, the C 3 H 6 permeability of PIM-Matrimid/Ni-MOF-7 MMMs showed only a 14% decline after 60 days. This work not only offers a new perspective for developing next-generation C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation membranes but also emphasizes the importance of rational design in maximizing the mixed-matrix effect.

Facilitated propylene transport in mixed matrix membranes containing ZIF-8@Agmim core-shell hybrid material

Xiaoquan Feng,Donglai Peng,Meixia Shan,Xinpu Niu,Yatao Zhang

The ZIF-8@Agmim core-shell hybrid material was synthesized via a favorable post-modification method of ion exchange (PMIE). This infrequent ZIF-8@Agmim core-shell structure maintains a well-integrated pore size that is almost the same as ZIF-8. The similar equilibrium isotherms with ZIF-8 and better kinetic separation toward propylene/propane than ZIF-8 render ZIF-8@Agmim to be an interesting candidate for propylene/propane separation. The core-shell hybrid nanomaterial was further used as nanofillers in the polymer of intrinsic microporosity matrix (PIM-1) for propylene/propane separation. The resultant mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) exhibited a simultaneous increase in C 3 H 6 permeability and C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 ideal selectivity compared to pure polymer membrane owing to a synergistic effect of molecular sieving from ZIF-8 and π -complexation of Ag + with propylene. The separation performance of the prepared MMM surpasses the upper bound line of polymer membranes. Furthermore, the hybrid materials possess superb photochemical stability and the corresponding MMMs exhibit excellent anti-aging property and long-term stability.

Rapid and selective acid recovery enabled by structurally engineered, high-surface-area PIM-1 anion exchange membranes

Haiyang Shao,Chen Wang,Miaomiao Zheng,Yafei Cheng,Lihai Fan,Haiyang Yan,Xiaocheng Lin

To advance industrial acid recovery via diffusion dialysis, the crucial step is to engineer anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with superior acid permeability and selectivity. Herein, a PIM-1-based AEM was fabricated via liquid bromine-induced bromination followed by a non-crosslinking alkylation with 1-methylimidazole, which preserves the rigid polymer backbone and intrinsic microporosity. The optimized, mechanically robust membrane exhibited a specific surface area of 549 ± 18 m 2  g −1 , providing abundant free volume for rapid proton transport, and a pore size distribution precisely centered between 0.40 and 0.75 nm, enabling selective acid recovery via size sieving in a typical HCl/FeCl 2 wastewater system. This membrane achieved a proton dialysis coefficient of 59.4 ± 4.3 × 10 −3  m h −1 and a selectivity of 74.4 ± 2.7 over Fe 2+ , outperforming the commercial DF-120 AEM by sevenfold and fourfold, respectively. This work provides a scalable, non-crosslinking functionalization route to fabricate mechanically robust AEMs from PIMs, leveraging their preserved microporosity for efficient and selective acid recovery.

Thermally Tailored Amidoxime-Functionalized PIM-1 Membranes with CO2-Imprinted UiO-66-NH2 for CO2/N2 Separation

Ziyi Yuan,Zhihong Lin,Kejing Li,Jian Li,Viatcheslav Freger,Xuezhong He

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are promising membrane materials for CO2 separation due to their high permeability; however, their limited CO2/N2 selectivity restricts practical application. Herein, mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated by incorporating a CO2-molecularly imprinted UiO-66-NH2 filler (MIP@U) into amidoxime-functionalized PIM-1 (AOPIM-1), followed by thermal treatment at 160 or 250 °C under vacuum to regulate the membrane microstructure. Spectroscopic and porosity analyses (FTIR, XRD, and N2 physisorption) show that thermal treatment at 160 °C promoted oxadiazole-ring formation, leading to enhanced subnanometer microporosity and improved CO2/N2 selectivity. In contrast, treatment at 250 °C partially regenerates nitrile groups and generates larger micropores, resulting in higher CO2 permeability but reduced selectivity. The MIP@U filler introduces CO2-recognition cavities and improves interfacial compatibility, enabling synergistic control of polymer microporosity and interfacial transport pathways. The optimized 3 wt % MIP@U/AOPIM-1-TR160 membrane achieves a CO2 permeability of ∼1600 Barrer and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 50.8. The membrane also demonstrates stable performance under pressures up to 12 bar and during 30 h of continuous operation at 2 bar. This study highlights a dual-approach strategy combining thermally tailored PIM chemistry with molecularly imprinted MOF fillers for designing high-performance MMMs for CO2 capture.

Constructing crosslinked and cationized PIM-1-based anion exchange membranes for efficient acid recovery via diffusion dialysis

Yafei Cheng,Chen Wang,Miaomiao Zheng,Lan Yang,Lihai Fan,Longqiang Xiao,Xiaocheng Lin

Diffusion dialysis (DD) shows strong potential for acid reclamation, yet standard anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with compact, low-free-volume matrices impede ion transport, leading to low acid permeability and poor selectivity. To overcome these barriers, we present a new class of PIM-1-based AEMs fabricated through liquid bromine (Br 2 ) bromination followed by simultaneous crosslinking and cationization with 1,4-Diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO). This approach mitigates radical-induced chain scission, thereby better preserving the rigid polymer backbone while introducing a high density of ion-conducting sites with enhanced structural reinforcement. The resulting membranes exhibit interconnected micropores narrowly distributed at 0.4–0.6 nm, enabling molecular sieving between protons and multivalent cations. The optimized PIM-D/10h membrane achieves a proton dialysis coefficient of 37.0 × 10 −3  m/h and a separation factor (H + /Fe 2+ ) of 54.3, exceeding the commercial DF-120 benchmark by more than fourfold and threefold, respectively, while maintaining a tensile strength around 19 MPa and strong acid resistance. These results demonstrate that combining free-volume design with matrix reinforcement resolves the canonical permeability-selectivity compromise, thereby enabling a scalable route to durable AEMs for rapid, selective acid recovery from industrial wastewater.

Amidoxime-functionalized PIM-1 incorporating defect-engineered ZIF-8 for enhanced propylene/propane separation and plasticization resistance

Hongjin Li,Yongchao Sun,Jianyu Guan,Lu Bai,Tianyou Li,Fake Sun,Yijun Liu,Gaohong He,Canghai Ma

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), composed of polymers and fillers, capitalize on the complementary strengths of both materials, offering a promising approach for developing high-performance membranes for C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation. However, the effectiveness of MMMs is often hindered by poor interfacial compatibility between the polymer and the filler. To address this challenge, we present an effective strategy that simultaneously enhances both interfacial compatibility and gas separation performance in MMMs. By etching ZIF-8 with cyanuric acid (CA), we successfully synthesized defect-engineered ZIF-8 (DZIF-8), a hollow nanoframe structure that features open metal sites. These sites not only coordinate with the amidoxime groups of amidoxime-functionalized PIM-1 (AO-PIM-1) to improve interfacial compatibility but also significantly enhance the adsorption capacity for propylene. The resulting MMMs exhibited excellent interfacial compatibility with no observable filler agglomeration. Remarkably, the 10 % DZIF-8-based MMM enhances C 3 H 6 permeability to 492 and boosts C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 selectivity to 24. The defect-engineered MOF-based MMM (DMMM) surpassed the 2003 upper bound for C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation and demonstrated outstanding resistance to plasticization. Furthermore, the DMMM exceeded the 2008 Robeson upper bound for H 2 /CH 4 (N 2 ) separation performance, highlighting its exceptional versatility. These results showcase the potential of defect-engineered MMMs in gas separation applications, particularly in high-performance C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation.

Enhancing Interfacial Compatibility of PIM-1-Based Mixed-Matrix Membranes through In Situ-Formed cPIM-1 Networked Fillers

Hong Li,Yuanyuan Feng,Jingde Li,Yanqin Yang

Efficient CO2 capture, demonstrating significant potential in reducing excessive carbon emissions and advancing carbon neutrality, is crucial for advancing carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology. Membrane technology is environmentally friendly and energy-saving for CO2 capture. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) consisting of polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs)-grafted composite fillers and PIM matrices are promising for gas separation. However, conventional two-phase MMMs often face a fundamental challenge: the trade-off between permeability and selectivity, coupled with nonselective interfacial defects arising from poor compatibility between the polymer matrix and fillers. Moreover, the synthesis of composite fillers is usually complex and highly dependent on the reasonable matching of fillers and grafted polymers, restraining the wide application of this material system. To fundamentally address this issue of interfacial compatibility, we focused on designing a distinct third phase at the interface. Herein, we report a concept of polymer–filler–polymer ternary-phase MMMs (TMMMs) for efficient CO2 separation. The key point is that the membrane system consists of a PIM matrix, filler, and a functionalized PIM-type third component. As the functionalized PIMs selected can form strong interactions with both fillers and PIM matrices, they can work as a molecular bridge between two phases, diminishing the generation of nonselective interfacial defects. Meanwhile, the functionalized PIMs’ incorporation can increase the quantity of CO2 adsorption sites as well as facilitate the formation of a porous network structure between filler and matrix phases, making the performance improvement of the resultant membranes foreseeable. Particularly, the representative ternary membrane made from 3D-COF (filler, 5 wt %), PIM-1 (matrix), and carboxylated PIM-1 (cPIM-1, third component, 1 wt %) exhibits significantly improved CO2 permeability of 9560 Barrer, CO2/N2 selectivity of 22.7, and antiaging performance in comparison to the pure PIM-1 membrane and PIM-1/3D-COF binary membrane. We believe that this concept proposed here offers an alternative way to produce defect-free and high-performing PIM-based MMMs for CO2 capture and other separations.

Effect of a Fe-Doped g-C3N4 Filler on Biogas Separation Performance in Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIM-1)

Kavya Adot Veetil,Senthil Kannan,Eun Kyu Sun,Md. Homayun Kabir,Ook Choi,Tae-Hyun Kim

Integrating nanomaterials with tunable surface functionalities into polymer matrices offers a promising route for developing high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Among these, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) facilitates gas transport and enhances membrane permeability due to its intrinsic nanopores. However, while improving the CO2 permeability, pristine g-C3N4 often compromises the CO2/CH4 selectivity. To address this trade-off, iron-doped g-C3N4 (Fe-g-C3N4) was incorporated into a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1), possessing a high free volume and excellent gas diffusion characteristics. Iron doping served to increase the CO2-philicity of g-C3N4 and strengthen its interaction with the CO2 molecules, thereby improving both permeability and selectivity. The resulting Fe-g-C3N4/PIM-1 MMMs demonstrated enhanced CO2 permeability and CO2/CH4 selectivity, indicating their potential for use in CO2 separation applications. Incorporating 0.5 wt % Fe-doped g-C3N4 into the PIM-1 matrix led to a 38.5% increase in CO2 permeability compared to pristine PIM-1 and a 12.7% improvement over the undoped g-C3N4-based MMM. While undoped g-C3N4 reduced the CO2/CH4 selectivity, Fe doping had the reverse effect, enhancing the selectivity by 7.2% relative to the undoped system. Notably, the Fe-g-C3N4/PIM-1 MMMs approach the 2008 Robeson upper bound for the CO2/CH4 separation. In addition, the membrane exhibited improved mechanical strength and antiaging and antiplasticization characteristics, collectively outperforming pristine PIM-1.

Free volume and gas transport properties of hydrolyzed polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) membrane studied by positron annihilation spectroscopy

Mingming Hu,Junjie Liu,Jingjing Kong,Peiyu Jia,Ning Qi,Yichu Wu,Zhiquan Chen,Shan Xu,Nanwen Li

In this work, a series of hydrolyzed polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) membranes were successfully synthesized under alkaline conditions. Positron annihilation lifetime measurement is employed to analyze the pore structure of the hydrolyzed PIMs. In the original PIM-1, there are two kinds of pores, i.e. micropores with radius of 4.32 Å and ultramicropores with radius of 2.58 Å. The size of all the pores shows a continuous decrease with increasing hydrolysis time, which is confirmed by the reduced chain-to-chain spacing in the hydrolyzed PIMs measured by X-ray diffraction. Meanwhile, the fractional free volume also shows decrease after the hydrolysis process, while the relative number of ultramicropores increases. Benefiting from the smaller pore size in the hydrolyzed PIMs membrane, the gas molecules with smaller size (such as CO 2 ) can be separated more efficiently. The selectivity of CO 2 /CH 4 of hydrolyzed PIMs reaches up to 30.05 with a relatively high CO 2 permeability of 140.58 Barrer, which exceeds the Robeson’s 1991 upper bound. Our results indicate that the hydrolyzed polymers of intrinsic microporosity membranes are promising candidates for gas separation membrane in the future.

Ionic liquid-modified hollow microspheres of tartaric acid-anion intercalated LDH in PIM-1 membranes for superior CO2/N2 separation

Caifeng Xia,Siyuan Liu,Qikang Yin,Sen Liu,Bo Liao,Shuxian Wei,Zhaojie Wang,Zhe Sun,Xiaoqing Lu

The performance of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) depends largely on the structure and composition of incorporated nanofillers. However, it remains challenging to achieve efficient separation performance with uniform filler dispersion and strong interfacial compatibility within the polymer matrix. In this study, an ionic liquid-modified hollow microsphere of tartaric acid anion-intercalated layered double hydroxide (IL@HMS TA-LDH) was designed and embedded into a PIM-1 matrix to fabricate IL@HMS TA-LDH/PIM-1 MMMs for efficient CO 2 separation. The hollow microstructure and anion-rich interlayers of LDH provide multiple facilitated transport pathways for CO 2 significantly enhancing both permeability and selectivity. Experimental and theoretical calculation results confirm that IL modification on HMS TA-LDH not only improved the interfacial compatibility between the polymer and the filler but also enhanced CO 2 affinity and the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity. The resulting MMMs surpassed the 2019 Robeson upper bound and showed good stability. The separation efficiency of the optimal 5.0 % IL@HMS TA-LDH/PIM-1 MMMs was the best (CO 2 permeability was 8550.73 ± 367.54 Barrer, CO 2 /N 2 selectivity was 40.75 ± 1.83), outperforming most of the other reported MMMs. This work offers a new strategy for designing high-performance CO 2 capture membranes by combining hollow-structured LDH with functionalized ionic liquids.

Boosting CO2/N2 separation in PIM-1/CSU-1 mixed matrix membranes by interfacial H-bonding and CO2-philic fillers

Shaohui Xiong,Xingyi Ou,Qingquan Liu,Yiwen Li,Juntao Tang,Guipeng Yu,Chunyue Pan,Shibo Guo,Sitong Li,Menghan Yong

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM) have attracted considerable attention in the development of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for CO 2 separation. A prominent challenge lies in engineering the spacing of the polymer matrix chains while eliminating non-selective interfacial defects. In this study, a CO 2 -philic triazine-based porous polymer, featuring robust hydrogen bond donating groups, was employed to fabricate a series of interfacial defect-free PIM-1 based MMMs (denoted as PIM-1/CSU-1). The interfacial adhesion and compatibility have been greatly improved due to the strengthened hydrogen bond interaction, which was systematically validated through variable-temperature infrared spectroscopy. Additionally, the formation of hydrogen bonds allowed for the regulation of the polymer matrix chain spacing, making the chain distance loose. Remarkably, the resulting membrane exhibited a CO 2 permeability of 13,429 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 33.1—246.6% and 70.2% higher than pristine PIM-1, respectively, surpassing the latest Jansen/McKeown upper bound established in 2019, but also significantly exceed the performance of previously reported MMMs for CO 2 separation. The strategy of mitigating interfacial defects through the formation of hydrogen bonds between fillers and the polymer matrix emerges as a viable and effective method for fabricating gas separation membranes with exceptional separation capabilities.

An Ultrathin Composite Polymer Electrolyte Dual-Reinforced by a Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIM-1) and Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) Porous Membrane

Qian Liang,Xuezhi Liu,Junyan Tang,Xiao Yan,Lei He,En Chen,Sihan Wu,Junjie Liu,Mi Tang,Zhiquan Chen,Zhengbang Wang

The performances of solid-state polymer electrolytes are urgently required to be further improved for high energy density lithium metal batteries. Herein, a highly reinforced ultrathin composite polymer electrolyte (PLPP) is successfully fabricated in a large scale by densely filling the well-dispersed mixture of polyethylene oxide (PEO), Li-salt (LiTFSI) and a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) into porous poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) matrix. Based on the macro-plus-micro synergistic enhancement of the PTFE with excellent mechanical properties and the soluble PIM-1 with suitable functional groups, the PLPP electrolyte exhibits excellent properties including mechanical stress, thermal stability, lithium-ion transference number, voltage window and ionic conductivity, which are all superior to the typical PEO/LiTFSI electrolytes. As a result, the Li/PLPP/Li symmetric cell can stably cycle for > 2000 h, and the LiFePO 4 /PLPP/Li full cell exhibits excellent rate performance (>10 C) and high cycling stability with an initial capacity of 158.8 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention of 78.8% after 300 cycles. In addition, the excellent mechanical properties as well as the wide voltage window reasonably result in the stable operation of full cells with either high-loading cathode up to 28.1 mg cm −2 or high voltage cathode with high energy density.
