Antimicrobial and Mechanical Properties of Ag@Ti3C2Tx-Modified PVA Composite Hydrogels Enhanced with Quaternary Ammonium Chitosan

Linxinzheng Guo,Kun Hu,Haibo Wang

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a polymeric material with good biocompatibility, excellent hydrophilicity, and a large number of hydroxyl groups. However, due to its insufficient mechanical properties and poor inhibition of bacteria, it has a lack of applications in wound dressings, stent materials, and other fields. In this study, a simple method was used to prepare composite gel materials: Ag@MXene-HACC-PVA hydrogels with a double-network structure were prepared using an acetal reaction. Due to the double cross-linked interaction, the hydrogel has good mechanical properties and is resistant to swelling. The adhesion and bacterial inhibition were enhanced due to the addition of HACC. In addition, the strain sensing properties of this conductive hydrogel were stable, and the GF (specification factor) was 1.7617 at 40–90% strain. Therefore, the dual-network hydrogel with excellent sensing properties, adhesion properties, antibacterial properties, and cytocompatibility has potential applications in biomedical materials, especially as a tissue engineering repair material.

A novel preparation of anti-layered poly(vinylalcohol)–polyacrylonitrile (PVA/PAN) membrane for air filtration by electrospinning

Zhiqiang Cheng,Yingying Zhang,Zhaolian Han,Liying Cui,Lijuan Kang,Fanli Zhang

A novel 3D filtration medium for airborne particles was prepared using an electrospinning technique, wherein PVA and PAN were used as a reinforcing agent and a bulk material for the filtration membrane, respectively. In order to improve the filtration efficiency and mechanical property of the membrane, the membrane was modified by a certain concentration mixture of GA, acetone and acetic acid, which could reduce the number of hydroxyl groups, promote its stability and increase the compactness via a bond between fibers. Simultaneously, the mechanical property of the membrane was measured by a tensile tester, and the results demonstrated that the maximum strain and toughness reached 144.58% and 5.33 J g−1, respectively. After that, the membrane was used as an air purification material for testing air particles content and the particles intercept principle has been discussed. The filtration performance of the membrane demonstrated that the membrane possessed excellent removing efficiency for air suspension with lower pressure drop compared with commercial masks under the same testing conditions. The filtration efficiency for the particles, sized 0.3 to 7 μm, was found to be approximately 99%. Furthermore, we also developed an effective avenue to fabricate a filtration medium based on the a steel wire for applications in ultra condition.

Large-Scale and Highly Efficient Production of Ultrafine PVA Fibers by Electro-Centrifugal Spinning for NH3 Adsorption

Youye Ma,Kanghui Cai,Guojie Xu,Yueling Xie,Peng Huang,Jun Zeng,Ziming Zhu,Jie Luo,Huawen Hu,Kai Zhao,Min Chen,Kun Zheng

Ultrafine Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers have an outstanding potential in various applications, especially in absorbing fields. In this manuscript, an electrostatic-field-assisted centrifugal spinning system was designed to improve the production efficiency of ultrafine PVA fibers from PVA aqueous solution for NH3adsorption. It was established that the fiber production efficiency using this self-designed system could be about 1000 times higher over traditional electrospinning system. The produced PVA fibers establish high morphology homogeneity. The impact of processing variables of the constructed spinning system including rotation speed, needle size, liquid feeding rate, and voltage on fiber morphology and diameter was systematically investigated by SEM studies. To acquire homogeneous ultrafine PVA fiber membranes, the orthogonal experiment was also conducted to optimize the spinning process parameters. The impact weight of different studied parameters on the spinning performance was thus provided. The experimental results showed that the morphology of micro/nano-fibers can be well controlled by adjusting the spinning process parameters. Ultrafine PVA fibers with the diameter of 2.55 μm were successfully obtained applying the parameters, including rotation speed (6500 rpm), needle size (0.51 mm), feeding rate (3000 mL h−1), and voltage (20 kV). Furthermore, the obtained ultrafine PVA fiber mat was demonstrated to be capable of selectively adsorbing NH3gas relative to CO2, thus making it promising for NH3storage and other environmental purification applications.

PVA/PEGDA microgels loaded with L-cysteine for corrosion inhibition coating on fragile bronze

Hu Hengrui,Huang Xia,Chen Jiachang,Chen Junying

Bronze holds immense artistic, historical, and scientific significance, representing a valuable component of humanity's cultural heritage. Despite its cultural value, bronze is susceptible to corrosion and damage caused by environmental factors. This paper prepared an environmentally friendly poly(vinyl alcohol)/ poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PVA/PEGDA) microgel loaded with L-cysteine (Cys), which effectively protects fragile bronze artifacts. In this study, the color and microstructure of the bronze coatings were characterized using a camera, colorimeter and scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the PVA/PEGDA microgels loaded with Cys (PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating) not only did not change the color and appearance of the bronze, but also adhered and bonded well to the bronze surface. Confocal microscopy confirmed the soft and self-healing properties of the PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating. Electrochemical testing and analysis showed that the PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating exhibited excellent corrosion inhibition performance, with a corrosion inhibition efficiency of as high as 95.66%. The compressive test shows that the PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating has certain reinforcement properties for bronze. The complete removal of PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating can be achieved by spraying ethanol solution, indicating the enormous potential of microgels coating in protecting corroded bronze artifacts in the short term.

AIE-active PVA/berberine antibacterial hydrogel for wound healing, visual monitoring pH and dehydration

Liqiang Gu,Xintao Sun,Jian Pan,Dongming Liu,Lilan Huang,Yaru Yu,Bing Yu,Hailin Cong

The antibacterial hydrogels have attracted a significant amount of interest for preventing bacterial infection in wound healing. However, irreversible antibiotic resistance and lagging detection of wound infection are still current research pain points for hydrogel wound dressings. This study successfully prepared and characterized a novel aggregation-induced PVA/SA/BBR hydrogel. BBR confers significant antibacterial potential to PVA/SA/BBR hydrogels avoiding the use of antibiotics. The results indicate that PVA/SA/BBR hydrogels displayed antibacterial activity against S. aureus , enhanced wound healing process, negligible cytotoxicity, and low hemolytic activity (< 5%). Molecular docking analysis indicate that BBR could inhibit the activity of FabH of E. coli and S. aureus , with a respective binding energy of -9.0185 and -8.4037 kcal/mol. Moreover, the real-time in situ monitoring and quantifying of wound pH levels could be realized by RGB signals collected and transformed from the visible-fluorescent images. PVA/SA/BBR hydrogels also provided significant fluorescent signals visible to the naked eye due to the AIE effect of BBR when the hydrogel severely loses water. All of these signals suggested anti-infective therapy and hydrogel replacement. Therefore, PVA/SA/BBR hydrogels as efficient non-antibiotic-dependent wound dressings with significant therapeutic effect on skin wounds provide potential applications in wound healing, flexible wearable sensing and drug delivery.

Preparation of the Garlic Oil Microcapsule/CS/PVA Nanofiber Membrane and the Antibacterial Properties

Zhang Ruquan,Lei Min,Hu Bingyu,Tu Hu,Hu Min

A preparation method of compound foam dressing with antibacterial effect is introduced in this paper. Garlic oil, a natural antibacterial agent was coated with β-CD to form the garlic oil/β-CD microcapsule (MC). Then the microcapsule was added to the spinning solution with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS) and was spun onto foam dressing to prepare garlic oil/CS/PVA nanofiber/foam compound dressings. The addition of garlic oil/β-CD microcapsule endowed the compound foam dressing with good antibacterial properties. The results shown that with the increase of MC, the antibacterial activity of compound dressing was further increased. MC 1.6 displayed the best antibacterial ability against E. coli and S. aureus (67.28 and 69.15 %), respectively. The liquid absorption properties increased from 16.86% to 17.91 % and the moisture content increased from 3.26 % to 5.29 %, compared to that of foam dressings. The mechanical properties of garlic oil/CS/PVA nanofiber/foam compound dressings increased by 4.6 N mm −2 compared with the foam compound dressings, and the elongation at break increased by about 11.3 %.

Recyclable CMC/PVA/MIL-101 aerogels with tailored network and affinity sites for efficient heavy metal ions capture

Chen Yang,Hua-Rong Yang,Qing-Da An,Zuo-Yi Xiao,Shang-Ru Zhai

A novel CMC/PVA/MIL-101(Cr) aerogel bead (CPMB) was prepared by the green polymer matrix of CMC and PVA and nanofiller of MIL-101(Cr) through the simple complexing with the ionic crosslinking agent, which could be an adsorptive platform for effectively capturing of Co(II) and Ni(II) ions in wastewater. The morphology, surface chemistry, and textural characteristics were investigated by varied characterization methods to reveal behind mechanisms for the dissimilarity in adsorption performance. The optimal modifying dosage of MIL-101(Cr) nanoparticles was determined to form an optimal tailored network with abundant MIL-101 clusters and hydroxyl/carboxyl groups inside the network that greatly achieved the most accessible heavy metals to CPMB-1. Meanwhile, the influences of temperature, adsorption dosage, pH, and interfering cations on the capacity of CPMB-1 were investigated, while adsorption behaviors of adsorbents were also explored. Analytic results indicated that the capture of two targeted ions by CPMB-1 could favorably comply with the Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isothermal adsorption model. The maximum adsorption capacities of two targeted ions calculated by data were 180.3 mg/g and 261.9 mg/g, respectively. According to the results of XPS and FTIR analysis, the electrostatic attraction and chelating effect could be the main mechanisms for improved performance, and contributing groups were the hydroxyl and carboxylic acid introduced into CPMB-1. Moreover, the as-designed CPMB-1 exhibited excellent recyclability and stability in eight cycles. The encouraging results exhibited by CPMB-1 might bring a new idea for integrating multiple functionalities of MOFs and biomass components for designing functional composites for efficient remediations of wastewater.

PVA fiber reinforced red mud-based geopolymer for 3D printing: Printability, mechanical properties and microanalysis

Kang Han,Fei Gu,Huashan Yang,Xinchen Tian,Xiangqin Du

Red mud-based geopolymers are an efficient alternative to resolve the high cement consumption in 3D printed concrete (3DPC). From a materials perspective, good printability and mechanical properties are critical to adopting red mud-based geopolymers in 3DPC. In this study, we selected bauxite tailings-red mud and blast furnace slag to prepare geopolymers. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers with 0, 0.3 %, 0.6 %, 0.9 %, and 1.2 % volume fractions were used to reinforce 3D printed red mud-based geopolymers. To evaluate the influence of PVA fiber on the printability and mechanical properties of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer. We tested the workability, extrudability, structural build-up ability, shape stability, and mechanical properties of the red mud-based geopolymer containing different volume fraction PVA fibers, and a microstructural analysis was performed to reveal the interface bond between the fibers and the geopolymer matrix. The results showed that adding PVA fibers impaired the workability of the red mud-based geopolymer mortar. The red mud-based geopolymer mortar showed a more than threefold increase in extrusion pressure compared to the control mixture (P0) when adding 1.2 % vol fiber. For all other mixtures, the increase was less than twice that of the control mixture. The PVA fiber had a significant positive impact on the structural build-up ability and shape stability of the 3D printable red mud-based geopolymer. In addition, PVA fibers promoted the bending strength of the hardened geopolymer specimens better than the compression strength, and the geopolymer gel on the fibers indicated the good interfacial bonding ability of the PVA fiber. This study demonstrates the feasibility of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer and the reinforcement of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer by PVA fibers, providing a material perspective to increase the range of red mud applications in 3D printed concrete.

Magnetic nanohydroxyapatite/PVA composite hydrogels for promoted osteoblast adhesion and proliferation

Ruixia Hou,Guohua Zhang,Gaolai Du,Danxia Zhan,Yang Cong,Yajun Cheng,Jun Fu

This paper reports on the systematic investigation of novel magnetic nano-hydroxyapatite/PVA composite hydrogels through cyclic freeze–thawing with controllable structure, mechanical properties, and cell adhesion and proliferation properties. The content of the magnetic nano-hydroxyapatite-coated γ-Fe 2 O 3 (m-nHAP) particles exhibited remarkable influence on the porous structures and compressive strength of the nanocomposite hydrogels. The average pore diameter of the nanocomposite hydrogels exhibited a minimum of 1.6   ±   0.3   μm whereas the compressive strength reached a maximum of about 29.6   ±   6.5   MPa with the m-nHAP content of around 10   wt% in the nanocomposite hydrogels. In order to elucidate the influence of the composite m-nHAP on the cell adhesion and proliferation on the composite hydrogels, the PVA, γ-Fe 2 O 3 /PVA, nHAP/PVA and m-nHAP/PVA hydrogels were seeded and cultured with osteoblasts. The results demonstrated that the osteoblasts preferentially adhered to and proliferated on the m-nHAP/PVA hydrogels, in comparison to the PVA and nHAP/PVA hydrogels, whereas the γ-Fe 2 O 3 /PVA hydrogels appeared most favorable to the osteoblasts. Moreover, with the increasing m-nHAP content in the composite hydrogels, the adhesion density and proliferation of the osteoblasts were significantly promoted, especially at the content of around 50   wt%.

Preparation of tannin-immobilized gelatin/PVA nanofiber band for extraction of uranium (VI) from simulated seawater

Jie Meng,Xiaoyan Lin,Jian Zhou,Ruigang Zhang,Yan Chen,Xiaoyan Long,Ran Shang,Xuegang Luo

A novel gelatin/PVA composite nanofiber band loaded with bayberry tannin (GPNB-BT) was prepared by electrostatic spinning and crosslinking for extraction of uranium (VI) from simulated seawater. The influential factors of tannin loaded on the nanofiber band were investigated in detail. Surface morphology and fiber diameter of GPNB-BT were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Functional groups of GPNB-BT were investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR). The adsorption process and mechanism of uranium on GPNB-BT was characterized by Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed that the BT had been stably solidified on the GPNB. Compared with other tannin-immobilized membranes, the nano-network structure of GPNB-BT with 200–400 nm diameter of fibers can promote solidification of tannins and improve adsorption capacity of GPNB-BT for uranium. The maximum adsorption capacity of the GPNB-BT for uranium is 170 mg/g at the optimal pH of 5.5 in 80 mg/L of initial uranium concentration and 1.4 μg/g even at extremely low initial concentration of 3 μg/L in the simulated seawater for 24 h. The GPNB-BT with good hydraulic properties, floatability and adsorption capacity for uranium is expected to be widely used in separation and enrichment of uranium in seawater and radioactive waste water.

PVA hydrogel serve as a high-efficiency carrier to enhance the photocatalytic degradation performance of BiOBr

Dai Zhang,Xinxin Zhang,Daopeng Zou,Fengyi Zhang,Xijiang Chang,Xiaoyang Yue,Hao Li

BiOBr is a bismuth-containing photocatalytic material that exhibits visible light activity, making it highly promising for applications in photocatalytic degradation of pollutants and ecological protection. However, its application is hinder by the powder form and small particle size. Loading a powder photocatalyst on a suitable carrier is a common way to solve this challenge. This study proposes that PVA hydrogel can be used as a highly efficient carrier to enhance the photocatalytic degradation performance of BiOBr. By adding a foaming agent, the pore structure of hydrogel was improved and the degradation performance to pollutants in wastewater was increased. The impact of various factors, including BiOBr photocatalyst loading, solution pH, recycling stability, and reactive species, on the photocatalytic degradation process were investigated. The performance of the PVA/BiOBr composite hydrogel to degrade methylene blue (MB) under simulated solar irradiation was studied. After a 120 min photocatalytic reaction, PVA/BiOBr-1.0 % composite hydrogel removed 99 % of 10 mg·L −1 MB, which was superior to pure BiOBr photocatalyst. This investigation is of significance as it provides insights into the integration of BiOBr catalysts key role of the PVA hydrogel carriers in enhancing the catalytic performance of BiOBr photocatalyst in wastewater treatment .

A transparent PEDOT:PSS/PVA-co-PE/epoxy thermoelectric composite device with excellent flexibility and environmental stability

Fanjia Zeng,Xu Zhao,Mengying Luo,Wen Wang,Xing Qing,Ying Lu,Weibing Zhong,Qiongzhen Liu,Jie Luo,Mufang Li,Dong Wang

With the rapid development of thermoelectric (TE) generators, the TE device that is transparent, flexible, and can be used for a long time under high humidity and low/high temperature has aroused great interests. In this study, a new hydrophilic substrate of poly (vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (PVA-co-PE) nanofiber membrane was used to support the poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), and then the PEDOT:PSS/PVA-co-PE composite was encapsulated by epoxy. Due to the size effect of nanofibers, the PVA-co-PE/epoxy composite area shows a good transmittance of 72% at a wavelength of 600 nm, while the area containing the PEDOT:PSS remains black. This kind of transparent packaging structure is more conducive to the application of TE device. Moreover, the special interpenetrating structure and hydrogen bonding between the three phases of PEDOT:PSS, PVA-co-PE NM and epoxy resin greatly enhance the interfacial adhesion of PEDOT:PSS/PVA-co-PE/epoxy composite. The morphology, mechanical properties , transmittance, TE performance, bending resistance and environmental stability of the transparent composite TE device were analyzed. The new composite structure proposed in this research gives the PEDOT:PSS/PVA-co-PE/epoxy TE device outstanding flexibility and environmental stability. The TE performance remains stable after 2000 cycles repeated bending and after placing one end of the TE device in hot steam and ice water. All the results demonstrate the potential application of the transparent composite TE device in the field of flexible electronic device packaging and applications.
