Multifunctional Nb 2 O 5 doping enhances both printability and performance of VPP-fabricated PZT ceramics. • Nb 2 O 5 reduces lateral overexposure, improving printing accuracy and surface quality. • Sintering densification and grain refinement are achieved via Nb 2 O 5 as a sintering aid. • High piezoelectric response ( d 33 ≈ 510 pC/N) and ferroelectric properties are obtained. • Functional lattice structures demonstrate stable underwater acousto-electric conversion. Inorganic precursors such as PbCO 3 can address the forming difficulties of traditional lead zirconate titanate (PZT) powders in vat photopolymerization (VPP) additive manufacturing. However, these precursors still exhibit limitations such as limited printing accuracy, poor densification, and constrained electrical properties, which have greatly restricted the application prospects of VPP-fabricated PZT ceramics. In this work, using ZrO 2 , TiO 2 , and PbCO 3 powders as raw materials, we propose a novel multifunctional Nb 2 O 5 doping strategy to fabricate complex-structured PZT ceramics via VPP with optimal dimensional precision. After doping, Nb 2 O 5 acts as an “embedded light absorber” that suppresses lateral overexposure, reducing the light-spot half-width w 0 by approximately 20% and green-body roughness from R a = 22.1 μm to 18.5 μm. Moreover, Nb 2 O 5 serves as a sintering aid and a property modifier, refining grains to 1–1.5 μm and increasing density from 7.40 to 7.62 g·cm −3 . It also reduces oxygen vacancies and induces lattice distortion (coexisting rhombohedral and tetragonal phases) and domain refinement. As a result, the ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and dielectric relaxation behaviors improve significantly (5 mol%: P r = 33.9 μC·cm −2 , d 33 = 510.2 pC·N −1 , and γ ≈ 2), producing high-precision lattice structures with a minimum strut diameter of 450 μm. The device delivered a maximum output voltage of 1.3 V at a 4 mm displacement and exhibited stable underwater acousto-electric conversion from 10 to 100 kHz. The proposed multifunctional doping concept overcomes the traditional trade-off between printability and piezoelectric properties in photocurable ceramics, providing a generalizable materials design framework to accelerate the development of advanced additive manufacturing for functional inorganic materials.

Piezoelectric ceramic materials are widely employed in actuation and sensing applications owing to their exceptional electromechanical properties. Multilayer piezoelectric actuators (MLAs) demonstrate significant reductions in driving voltage and enhanced output performance by employing a multilayer structural design that integrates internal electrodes. In this study, a high-performance PZT-based ceramic was selected to fabricate novel Ag-cofired MLAs sintered at 920 ℃ 4 h in a dimension of 10 × 10 × 24 mm 3 . The piezoelectric, dielectric, and ferroelectric characteristics of the ceramic were systematically evaluated. The fabricated MLAs exhibited a displacement of 2 μm with minimal hysteresis (low H ~ 12%), while maintaining remarkable temperature stability (variation less than 14% within 30–100 °C), pronounced strain response ( S max ~ 0.10%), and robust fatigue resistance(strain value from 0.694 to 0.671% after 10 6 cycles). These attributes make the developed multilayer piezoelectric materials as promising candidates for precision actuation systems. The capabilities of piezoelectric actuators are expanded by low operating voltage and high force amplitude, rendering them suitable for a wider range of control applications.

High piezoelectric properties and superior thermal stability are both important indicators of piezoelectric ceramics serving at high temperature. However, since these properties are usually mutually exclusive, high performance and superior thermal stability are hard to achieve simultaneously. Here we report that a high piezoelectricity ( d 33 ∼ 562 pC/N) and superior thermal stability (the variation is within 7% from 20 to 330 °C) were both achieved in 0.4 mol% ZnO-doped 0.02Pb(Sb 1/2 Nb 1/2 )-0.51PbZrO 3 –0.47PbTiO 3 by high-temperature poling. Compared with traditional poling method, high-temperature poling method forms a small-sized and highly oriented domain structure, which can effectively improve the piezoelectric and dielectric properties of piezoelectric ceramics. At the same time, the enhanced pinning effect of defect ions and stabilized domain structure due to high-temperature poling also contribute to the superior temperature stability of the piezoelectric and dielectric properties. This work provides an effective method for designing piezoelectric materials with high performance and good temperature stability for high temperature sensor applications .

The practical application of ferroelectric shape memory ceramics in high-precision actuation systems faces dual constraints from limited strain memory combined with excessive overshoot. To address this challenge, through poling and aging treatments of MnO 2 -doped Pb 0.94 Sr 0.05 La 0.01 (Zr 0.54 Ti 0.46 )0 .9975 O 3 ceramics, we developed a material system demonstrating enhanced strain memory S m (0.38 %) and superior memory-overshoot ratio R mo (3.64). Mechanism investigations reveal oxygen vacancies' pivotal role in enhancing the ferroelectric shape memory effect. The directional arrangement defect dipoles formed by oxygen vacancies enhance asymmetric domain switching to amplify strain memory. Meanwhile, the local pinning effect of oxygen vacancies selectively limits non-memory strain and reduces overshoot. The optimized performance stems from the synergistic interplay of these complementary mechanisms. The proposed methodology establishes a generalizable framework for developing ferroelectric shape memory ceramics, paving the way for industrial-grade shape memory devices.

In the field of self-powered sensing, the demand for materials with enhanced wearing comfort and superior flexibility has become increasingly prominent, driven by the rapid advancement of wearable electronics and intelligent monitoring technologies. Although piezoelectric ceramics exhibit exceptional piezoelectric performance, their inherent brittleness and poor deformability severely restrict their practical applicability in flexible self-powered sensors. In pursuit of addressing the requirement for improved wearing comfort while retaining efficient energy conversion capability, elastomer-based composite fibers have emerged as a promising class of materials and developed rapidly in recent years. Nevertheless, a critical challenge remains in achieving uniform dispersion of fillers within the polymer matrix and the fabrication of defect-free composite fibers under high filler loading, primarily due to the significant surface energy discrepancy between the fillers and the polymer matrix. In this work, a novel thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) based composite piezoelectric fiber with strong organic–inorganic interfacial adhesion and uniform high-content filler dispersion was proposed, achieved by interfacial modification of PZT and in situ reduced Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) into TPU via wet spinning for flexible wearable piezoelectric sensors. Notably, even at total inorganic filler loadings surpassing 80 wt%, the resultant composite fibers maintain outstanding mechanical properties, with breaking strength >10 MPa and elongation at break >200%. When optimized with 80 wt% PZT and 3 wt% Ag precursor, the composite fibers, after weaving into fabrics and corona polarization, exhibit ultrahigh piezoelectric output sensitivity of 133 ± 2.1 mV N−1 and ultrafast response time (≈20 ms). This work offers a scalable fabrication route for high-performance piezoelectric fibers, which is helpful for self-powered sensors with better performance and more comfortable use in human motion monitoring and recognition.

Piezoelectric nanogenerators with the ability to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy for energy harvesting have prompted widespread concern. In this work, gradient porous PZT ceramics with a cellular region, transition region, progressive lamellar region and homogeneous lamellar region were prepared via freeze casting method. PDMS as a flexible matrix was introduced into the pore space of porous PZT ceramics to form piezoelectric composites. The gradient porous structure promoted the ability of stress transfer, and greatly improved the efficiency of electromechanical conversion. Among these regions, the PENG in the progressive lamellar region displayed the maximum optional electric output performance. The PENG generated the maximum output voltage of 152 V and current of 17.5 μA, which were 2 times and 1.6 times higher than those of piezoelectric composites with randomly dispersed PZT ceramic particles under the given external mechanical stress. The sensitivity of PENG based on the gradient porous PZT ceramics was 1.52 V N−1, which possessed a remarkable superiority in comparison with other PENG with 3D interconnected structure. Moreover, the instantaneous power reached 1.1 mW, which could light up 96 LEDs. This work demonstrated the potential application of porous piezoelectric composites in energy harvesting.

In this paper, two methods (magnetic stirring and mechanical ball milling) were used to modify the surface of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) particles. Then, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/PZT piezoelectric films were prepared by extrusion casting and solvent casting. We investigated the mechanical, dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties, as well as the breakdown strength of the PVDF/PZT films. We found that adding PZT particles improved the mechanical stability of the films under variable temperature conditions. Modification by the UP-105 titanate coupling reagent further improved the combination and dispersion of PZT@105 particles in PVDF. The films prepared by extrusion casting showed improved properties in terms of density, dielectric constant, breakdown strength, and piezoelectric coefficient. The piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 ) of the PVDF/PZT@105 composite film (with 25 wt.% PZT@105) prepared by extrusion casting reached 35 pC/N, and the electromechanical strain ratio was almost 1.6%, which is higher than that of piezoelectric ceramics.

Lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-based piezoelectric ceramics are key functional materials for ultrasonic transducers, where the balance between piezoelectric activity and dielectric loss directly determines the energy conversion efficiency and thermal stability of devices. However, a fundamental trade-off exists between these two properties, as enhancing piezoelectric performance is often accompanied by increased dielectric loss, resulting in excessive heat generation and degraded long-term reliability during high-power operation. Moreover, the microscopic mechanism governing the balance between piezoelectric and dielectric properties in multi-component co-doped PZT systems remains insufficiently understood. In this work, a defect-dipole reconstruction strategy is proposed by introducing Nd 3+ donor ions into Ni 2+ -modified PZT ceramics. The results demonstrate that this strategy enables a stable low dielectric loss (tanδ = 0.02-0.03) over a broad temperature range from room temperature to 300 °C while maintaining desirable piezoelectric activity. The optimized NNPZT2 composition achieves a high piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 ) of 260.6 pC/N. Such balanced electrical performance originates from the synergistic regulation of defect chemistry and polarization behavior: Nd 3+ incorporation is proposed to destabilize the ordered Ni 2+ -induced defect-dipole configuration through donor-acceptor charge compensation and subsequently reconstructs a localized polarization state dominated by polar nanoregions (PNRs). This polarization reconstruction facilitates reversible polarization switching while suppressing oxygen-vacancy-related dielectric loss. This work provides new insights into donor-acceptor interaction-mediated defect regulation and polarization reconstruction in PZT ceramics, offering an effective strategy for designing high-performance piezoelectric materials with simultaneously low dielectric loss, improved thermal stability, and enhanced energy conversion efficiency for wide-temperature-range electromechanical applications.

Multilayer piezoelectric ceramics employing base metals such as copper as inner electrodes are ideal for components like micro-displacement actuators and ultrasonic motors, which require materials possessing high piezoelectric performance, high Curie temperature, and low sintering temperature. In this study, by introducing a ternary composite additive of Li₂CO₃-CuO-Nb₂O₅ into the 0.075Pb(Mn 1/3 Sb 2/3 )O 3 -0.925Pb(Zr 0.48 Ti 0.52 )O 3 (PMS-PZT) system, PMS–PZT ceramics with excellent overall properties were successfully fabricated at a sintering temperature of 950 °C, exhibiting d 33 = 361.2 pC/N, Tc= 339.8 ℃, tanδ= 0.6%, Q m = 668.8, k p = 0.65. The effects of sintering temperature on the structure and properties of the ceramics were systematically investigated. The synergistic action of Li 2 CO 3 and CuO effectively reduced the sintering temperature and facilitated the incorporation of Nb into the B-site at relatively low temperatures, thereby significantly enhancing the piezoelectric performance and Curie temperature of the material. This work not only provides an effective low‑temperature sintering approach for the PMS–PZT ceramic system, but also offers important references for the selection of material systems and additives in the development of multilayer piezoelectric devices.

To address the inherent trade-off between piezoelectric performance and temperature stability in Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 (PZT)-based ceramics for ultrasonic transducer in high-temperature applications, a series of (Pb 0.985 Sm 0.01 )(Zn 0.067 Nb 0.133 Zr 0.8− x Ti x )O 3 (PSZNZ 0.8− x T x , x = 0.36, 0.37, 0.375, 0.38, 0.39) piezoelectric ceramics were synthesized via the traditional solid-state reaction method. The influence of the Zr/Ti ratio on the crystal structure, microstructure, electrical properties, and temperature stability of these ceramics was rigorously evaluated. With the increase in Ti content, the dominant crystal structure of PSZNZ 0.8− x T x ceramics changes from the rhombohedral (R) phase to the tetragonal (T) phase, and a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) is formed in the PSZNZ 0.42 T 0.38 ceramic, which exhibits optimal piezoelectric performance ( d 33 ~ 630 pC/N, k p ~ 70.1%, T C ~ 310 °C). Notably, the PSZNZ 0.42 T 0.38 ceramic demonstrates excellent temperature stability within the 20–200 °C range: Its remnant polarization ( P r ) and positive strain ( S pos ) exhibit relative change rates of < 35% and < 25%, respectively, while d 33 remains above 600 pC/N with a relative change rate of < 15%. The ultrasonic transducer fabricated with the PSZNZ 0.42 T 0.38 ceramic achieves a maximum output voltage of 2.28 V, 1.26 times higher than that of its PSZNZ 0.44 T 0.36 counterpart, and a relative voltage change rate of < 10% over 20–200 °C. These results demonstrate that the PSZNZ 0.42 T 0.38 ceramic integrates high piezoelectric performance and reliable temperature stability, making it a viable and promising candidate for ultrasonic transducers operating under high-temperature conditions.

Highly effective piezoelectric hardening is crucial for high-power device applications. In this work, we introduce a novel piezoelectric hardening approach that synergistically combines oxygen vacancies with precipitates for achieving strong pinning of ferroelectric domain walls. In Mn-doped 0.2Pb(Zn 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -0.8Pb(Zr 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 (Mn-doped PZN–PZT) ceramic, the substitution of Mn 3 + for Ti 4+ or Zr 4+ results in an acceptor doping hardening, whereas the substitution of Mn 2+ for Zn 2+ leads to the formation of ZnO precipitates, leading to a precipitation hardening. Highly effective piezoelectric hardening via oxygen vacancies and ZnO precipitates in 0.9 wt% MnCO 3 -doped PZN–PZT sample is realized, where the mechanical quality factor ( Q m ) and maximum vibration velocity ( v max ) represent 10 times and 1.2 times increase, compared to the undoped samples. Moreover, the synergistic strategy of integrating oxygen vacancies with ZnO precipitates can significantly enhance the stability of Q m , offering substantial potential for the design of high-power piezoelectric ceramics.

High-temperature piezoelectric sensors for measurement-while-drilling (MWD) applications demand materials that simultaneously possess high piezoelectric sensitivity, low dielectric loss, and exceptional thermal stability. In this work, “hard” Mn-doped 0.02 Pb(Sb 1/2 Nb 1/2 )O 3 -(0.98- x )PbZrO 3 - x PbTiO 3 (PSN-PZ- x PT) ceramics were systematically designed. While the introduction of Mn 2+ acceptor ions effectively minimizes dielectric loss through domain wall pinning, it inevitably shifts the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Meanwhile, for compositions near the MPB, the temperature dependence of the resonance frequency is significantly influenced by the Zr/Ti ratio. By finely tuning the Zr/Ti ratio in the vicinity of the MPB, materials exhibiting simultaneous high piezoelectric performance and excellent thermal stability were obtained. The composition with x = 0.465, located at the MPB, exhibited an excellent combination of properties: d 33 ∼ 320 pC/N, ε r ∼971, k p ∼0.63, T C ∼354 °C, tanδ ∼0.30%, and Q m ∼452. Remarkably, this composition demonstrated superior high-temperature stability up to 200 °C, with the resonance frequency variation (Δ f r / f r25 °C ) maintained within 2.45% and electromechanical coupling fluctuation (Δ k p / k p25 °C ) within 4.62%. These results demonstrate that the optimized Mn-doped PSN-PZT ceramics are promising candidates for high-power, high-temperature applications.
