Methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) has been considered as the most influential component to boost the rapid development of perovskite photovoltaic devices during the past decade. However, the volatility of organic compounds (Methylammonium ions) causes excessive residual PbI 2 during the fabrication and storage process of MAPbI 3 films. The doping of various reduced graphene oxide (L-AA-rGO) is systematically induced into MAPbI 3 precursor ink to regulate the crystallization process, resulting in obtaining a high-quality perovskite film. The higher content of oxygen-containing functional groups (carboxyl and hydroxyl) and flexible sp 3 skeleton structure is successfully obtained in L-AA-rGO(LT), which is favored to form stable coordination bonds with uncoordinated Pb 2+ ions via lone pairs of electrons. Therefore, this functional L-AA-rGO(LT) not only passivates deep-level defects Pb 0 with its functional groups, but also absorbs the perovskite lattice structure with its special sp 3 carbon network to release its residual stress within the perovskite film. This work provides a new method to develop the efficiency and stability of MAPbI 3 perovskite solar cells via doping functional L-AA-rGO.

The crystallization behavior of lead halide perovskites (PVSKs) is regulated by blending KCl in PbI2 during the two-step growth method, and the effects of KCl blending on photovoltaic and reverse-bias stability are studied for the hole-conductor-free, carbon-electrode based perovskite solar cells (CPSCs). It is observed that KCl compresses the PbI2 lattice and slows down the reaction rate between PbI2 and organic salt, resulting in a “slow-release effect” on PbI2. This effect helps improve PVSK crystallization and prolong the lifetime of photo-generated charge carriers, leading to an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.16 V and a VOC deficit as low as 0.37 V (non-radiative VOC deficit of ∼0.1 V) for the hole-conductor-free CPSCs. Furthermore, power conversion efficiency (PCE) increase from 17.36% to 19.66%. Reverse-bias stability is studied through the examination of electrical stress and thermal image techniques. Owing to the improved crystallization, KCl blending results in a higher breakdown voltage and prolonged electrical stability. A type of “reverse-bias luminescence” (RBL) is newly exhibited. An external quantum efficiency (EQE) of ∼5% is obtained at reverse bias of −4 V. The RBL behavior can be ascribed to the defect-assisted charge-tunneling process. This study not only provides a strategy to further improve the stability of hole-conductor-free CPSCs, but also expands the application to the light-emitting field.

The formation process of hybrid perovskites affects the morphology, performance, and stability of the materials to a large extent. This work takes the preparation of a prototypical perovskite, methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) from vapor conversion to illustrate the effect of reaction conditions. First, we applied our recently invented microspacing in-air sublimation (MAS) to grow PbI2 crystals with thicknesses ranging from several to hundreds of nanometers. The PbI2 single crystals were employed to investigate the conversion to MAPbI3. This proved that vapor conversion is indeed a single-crystalline-to-polycrystalline process, following a deconstruction–reconstruction mechanism. Both the crystal thickness and activation temperature greatly affect the revolution, while the morphology of the formed perovskite is dictated by the thickness of the precursor crystal. Clarification of the intrinsic and exerted factors on the conversion process is conducive to a deep understanding of the perovskite formation process.

Low bandgap tin–lead halide perovskite (PVSK) presents promising opportunities for high-performance solar cells. However, the randomly crystallized Sn–Pb PVSK with a tin-rich surface is easily oxidized, leading to high-level p-type doping, which hinders the performance enhancement of the solar cell devices. Herein, an efficient anti-solvent passivation strategy to regulate defect, crystallization, and energy conversion performance based on anti-solvents composed of chlorobenzene, isopropanol, and methylammonium chloride (MACl) is proposed. It is shown that the Sn–Pb PVSK film gets more moderate and order, with less PbI 2 and more α-phase PVSK formed. Furthermore, it is revealed that the surface of the as-processed film is Pb-rich, demonstrating a decrease in the surface p-type concentration, which is more suitable for the photoelectric conversion enhancement of the inverting device. Finally, the MACl-assisted post-treated Sn–Pb PVSK invert solar cells exhibit a high current density of 26.49 mA cm −2 with a open-circuit voltage of 0.70 V and a power conversion efficiency of 16.05%. The modified anti-solvent process fuses the advantage of additive and anti-solvent engineering for growing highly crystallized hybrid tin-lead halide PVSK for photovoltaic devices.
