One of the main issues with membrane-based gas separation lies in the unexplored relationship between the precursors and their derived carbon molecular sieve membranes (CMSMs). Herein, we designed a series of TR polymers with gradient PBO content as precursors to investigate the carbonization mechanisms of PBO structure. The process of transforming the polymer precursor into carbon structure throughout pyrolysis involves utilizing an array of characterization techniques along with pyrolysis simulation. Results indicated that a higher PBO content leads to stronger molecular sieving effect of the resulting CMSM. The TR-CMS-50 membrane demonstrated exceptional gas separation performance with high permeability (P H2 = 3154 and P CO2 = 1495 Barrer) as well as ultra-high H 2 /CH 4 (384) and CO 2 /CH 4 (166) selectivity, which far exceeded the newest Upper bound line, showing significant potential for practical applications. This may can be attributed to “delayed effect” of the PBO structure which requires pyrolysis at higher temperatures, leading to more intense pyrolysis and the release of nitrogen-containing substances. Meanwhile, PBO has a cyclic system with a strong aromatic structure that closely resembles a carbon strand, which probably facilitates aromatization and enables it to more easily integrate into CMS structure, resulting in a more orderly arrangement in the Langmuir phase and generating higher concentration of pyrrolic-N (58.7 % vs. 44.1 %) as well as graphitic-N (31.6 % vs. 17.2 %). Thus, increasing the PBO content makes the derived CMS denser and significantly enhances its molecular sieving capacity. This study offers new insights into the development of precursor structures that creates high-performance CMSMs.

To overcome the irreversible sulfation and improve the lifespan of lead-acid batteries (LABs), we propose a novel Pb/PbO@C nanocomposite with botryoidal architecture derived from eggplant biomass as effective additives to the negative plates. Such unique structure, sharing a three-dimensional conductive carbon network with macropores , effectively facilitates electron transport and boosts ion diffusion as well as suppresses the growth of PbSO 4 during charge-discharge process. The hierarchical carbon framework is also responsible for dispersing active material Pb to limit the particle aggregation. As a result, the LAB equipped with 2.0 wt% Pb/PbO@C-700 shows an excellent rate capability and outstanding high-rate partial state of charge (HRPSoC) cycling performance of 8.2 times compared to that of the LAB without additive. Pb/PbO@C additive is expected to be a promising candidate for commercial application in LABs.

Nanocomposites with great thermal stability and excellent dielectric properties play a vital role in the development of high-temperature resistant capacitors. A facile yet effective method to synthesize enhanced dielectric properties of thermostable three-phase poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (mCCTO@CFGO/PBO) nanocomposite films is demonstrated in this work. The amino-functionalized oxide CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 nanoparticles (mCCTO) are enwrapped by the carboxyl-functionalized ultrathin graphene shells (CFGO), forming the silk-cocoon structure to achieve homogeneous dispersion in the matrix. The final films are fabricated via in situ polymerization by introducing the mCCTO@CFGO nanoparticles into the PBO precursor polymer. The mCCTO@CFGO/PBO nanocomposite films exhibit high thermal stability (the 5% thermal decomposition temperature is 655 °C), while the unique silk-cocoon structure effectively confers the high dielectric constant up to 86.9 and ultra-low dielectric loss (0.063) with the loading of 10 wt% mCCTO@3 wt% CFGO/PBO at 1 kHz and 200 °C. This promising strategy accelerates the development of electronic devices used under high temperatures.

Poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fiber, made from a rigid-rod isotropic crystal polymer, exhibits exceptional tensile strength, thermal stability, and creep resistance, surpassing Kevlar fiber (one of high-performance bullet proof fibers) with twice the strength and modulus. However, UV exposure cleaves the oxazole rings in PBO’s molecular structure, leading to decreased crystallinity, reduced mechanical strength, and limited suitability for outdoor applications. This study introduces a novel surface enhancement method using an olefin addition reaction with an azobenzene polyepoxy (Bt-APDB-BA-GMA) coating for Ultraviolet (UV) resistance. Further combining this with nano titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) forms an organic-inorganic layer for additional protection. Comparative studies were conducted on three samples, including original PBO fibers (PBO), PBO fibers modified with azobenzene/epoxy copolymer (PBO/azo-epoxy), and PBO fibers modified with both azobenzene/epoxy copolymer and nano TiO 2 (PBO/TiO 2 @azo-epoxy). Modified fibers showed significant improvements: PBO/TiO 2 @azo-epoxy exhibited a 63 % higher pull-out strength (34.58 MPa) and retained 78.2 % tensile strength after 288 hours of UV aging, compared to 28.2 % for unmodified fibers. This innovation enhances PBO fiber durability, UV resistance, and interfacial bonding, paving its way for broader applications in body armor, aircraft, and advanced technologies.

Poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fiber and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) resin have been widely acknowledged as excellent wave-transparent materials for future high-frequency applications due to their exceptional dielectric properties. However, the weak interfacial bonding between these two materials hampers their full potential. In this study, we successfully addressed this limitation by enhancing the surface roughness of PBO fibers and introducing active sites through the in-situ grafting of silica nanowires. The added silica acted as an interfacial anchor on the PBO fiber surface, significantly improving the bonding force between PBO and PTFE. PBO/PTFE wave-transparent laminated composites were fabricated using hot compression molding. The results demonstrate that the PBO (treated with in-situ grown silica)/PTFE laminated composites exhibit superior interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), flexural strength, flexural modulus, and tensile modulus compared to the pristine PBO/PTFE laminated composites. Specifically, these properties are found to be 58.6%, 32.9%, 138.1%, and 25.35% higher, respectively. Additionally, these composites demonstrate low dielectric constant and dielectric loss. Most notably, they achieve a wave transmittance of 91.45% at 10 GHz, indicating significant potential for wide-range applications in next-generation advanced military weapons, such as “lightweight/high-strength/wave-transparent” electromagnetic window materials, as well as civilian communication base stations.

Poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) nanofiber films are promising candidates for next-generation electronics due to their superior thermal stability, mechanical strength, and heat dissipation capability. However, fabricating high-quality PBO nanofiber film remains challenging due to its inherent poor solubility and infusibility. Current sol–gel methods for fabricating PBO nanofiber films suffer from the tedious operation, environmental risk, and potential structural defects, thereby limiting their performance and applications. A hierarchical assembly strategy is demonstrated to optimize the fabrication and aggregation structure of PBO nanofiber films through proton-acceptor solvents such as H 2 O. By controlling nanofiber aggregation and enhancing molecular alignment via external force-assisted crystallization, high-performance PBO nanofiber films are achieved with exceptional properties: great in-plane thermal conductivity (25.85 W·m −1 ·K −1 ), outstanding tensile strength (189.98 MPa), and remarkable thermal stability (T 5% ≈ 517 °C). Remarkably, assembling PBO nanofibers (PBONFs) in high concentration into PBO wet films takes just a few minutes, drastically enhancing preparation efficiency. When applied as flexible printed circuit board substrates, PBO nanofiber films effectively homogenize temperature fields, suppressing local hotspots and reducing surface temperatures by 16.7 °C. This strategy offers a scalable solution for manufacturing high-performance PBO nanofiber films, demonstrating significant potential for advanced thermal management in next-generation electronics.

Modified bisphenol A dicyanate ester (m-BADCy) wave-transparent laminated composites reinforced with functionalized poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (f-PBO) fibers were fabricated using an optimized method of impregnation-winding followed by lamination-molding. m-BADCy was synthesized from copolymerization between (2-((3-trifluoromethyl)phenoxy)methyl)oxirane and the BADCy matrix. f-PBO fibers were obtained by modifying with lysozyme followed by polyhedral oligomericsilsesquioxane (POSS). Lysozyme was coated on the surface of PBO fibers (PBO@lysozyme) and polyhedral oligomericsilsesquioxane (POSS) was grafted onto the PBO@lysozyme fibers (POSS-g-PBO@lysozyme, f-PBO fibers). The dielectric constant (ε), 2.81, and dielectric loss (tan δ), 0.0028, for f-PBO fiber/m-BADCy wave-transparent laminated composites were lower than those of PBO fiber/m-BADCy wave-transparent laminated composites (ε = 2.91 and tan δ = 0.0043). The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and the flexural strength of the f-PBO fiber/m-BADCy wave-transparent laminated composites were significantly increased to 47.6 and 805.8 MPa, increased by 23.0% and 33.5% in comparison to those of PBO fiber/m-BADCy wave-transparent laminated composites (ILSS = 38.7 MPa and flexural strength = 603.5 MPa), respectively. In addition, the corresponding heat resistance index (THRI, representing thermal stability) and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the f-PBO fiber/m-BADCy wave-transparent laminated composites were 228.3 and 252.1 °C, respectively.

Lead oxide (PbO) nanosheets are of significance in the design of functional devices. However, facile, green, and fast fabrication of ultrathin and homogenous PbO nanosheets with a chemically clean surface is still desirable. Herein, a simple and chemically clean route is developed for fabricating such nanosheets via laser ablation of a lead target in water for a short time and then ambient aging. The obtained PbO nanosheets are (002)-oriented with microsize in planar dimension and ∼15 nm in thickness. They are mostly hexagonal in shape. Experimental observations of the morphological evolution have revealed that the formation of such PbO nanosheets can be attributed to two processes: (i) laser ablation-induced formation of ultrafine Pb and PbO nanoparticles (NPs) and (ii) PbO NP aggregation and their oriented connection growth. Importantly, a composite surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) chip is designed and fabricated by covering a PbO nanosheet monolayer on a Au NP film. Such a composite SERS chip can be used for the fast and trace detection of gaseous H2S in which the PbO nanosheets can effectively chemically trap H2S molecules, demonstrating a new application of these PbO nanosheets. The response of this chip to H2S can be detected within 10 s, and the detection limit is below 1 ppb. Also, this PbO nanosheet-based chip is reusable by heating after use. This study not only deepens the understanding of the NP-based formation mechanism of nanosheets but also provides the renewable SERS chips for the highly efficient detection of trace gaseous H2S.

Lead-carbon composites are effective additives in lead-carbon negative electrode due to their beneficial influences on the performance of negative electrode of lead-carbon battery operated under high-rate partial-state-of-charge duty. In this paper, to further investigate the effects of the lead monoxide (PbO) deposition ratio of activated carbon (AC) based lead-carbon composite additives, we prepared lead-carbon composites (termed as PbO@AC) with different controllable PbO deposition ratios successfully through a facile coupled chemical-deposition/pyrolysis strategy. The hydrogen evolution reaction of AC and lead-carbon electrode is effectively inhibited through the deposition of PbO. PbO@AC-2 sample with a PbO deposition ratio of 9.9% exhibits the best electrochemical performances when used as the negative electrode additive. The evidently enhanced performances of lead-carbon electrodes, such as rate capability and cycling life under high-rate partial-state-of-charge operation, indicate the beneficial effects of deposited PbO. Particularly, PbO@AC-2 battery exhibits the longest cycling life of more than 10,000 cycles which is 1.956 times that of lead-carbon battery with AC as the negative electrode additive. The improved performances of lead-carbon electrode enabled by PbO@AC-2 originate from both the inhibition of hydrogen evolution reaction and the enhanced electrochemical reversibility of the Pb/PbSO 4 redox reaction . PbO@AC-2 exhibits the best trade-off between inhibiting hydrogen evolution and building extra electrochemical active area for the deposition of Pb.

The defects in perovskite crystals and the penetration of moisture/oxygen into the perovskite layer are major problems for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to achieve long-term stability and high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, there is still a lack of multifunctional passivation materials to solve these problems. Herein, for the first time, we report oleyl amine-coated PbSO 4 (PbO) 4 quantum-dots (QDs), as a passivation material with dual functions to simultaneously passivate the surface defects and block the penetration of moisture/oxygen into the perovskite layer for stable and efficient PSCs. The PbSO 4 (PbO) 4 QDs significantly reduce the defect density of the as-prepared CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 films by passivating under-coordinated Pb ions and I anions and effectively enhance charge extraction efficiency at the TiO 2 /CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 and CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 /spiro-OMeTAD interfaces. Moreover, the hydrogen bond between H atoms of the OA and I atoms of the perovskite and the interface electric field at CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 /OA interface also contribute to the improvement of efficiency and stability of PSCs. Finally, higher PCE (20.02%) is achieved by the PSCs with OA-coated PbSO 4 (PbO) 4 QDs compared to that (16.86%) of the PSCs without OA-coated PbSO 4 (PbO) 4 , corresponding to a 18.7% enhancement. Moreover, the PSCs with OA-coated PbSO 4 (PbO) 4 QDs maintain 90% of initial efficiency after operation for 280 h, indicating better stability than the PSCs without PbSO 4 (PbO) 4 QDs.

This study presents the fabrication of ultrathin, mechanically strong poly( p -phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) nanofiber films and their integration into composite materials. A novel sol-gel-film method was established for producing PBO nanofiber films, with an orthogonal experimental design employed to optimize the effects of PBO concentration and dissolution time on the mechanical properties. The optimal conditions (PBO concentration of 2.8 g/L and dissolution time of 40 h) yielded a tensile strength of 683 MPa and a Young's modulus of 12.05 GPa. Furthermore, PBO nanocomposite films incorporating silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were developed. The PBO/Ag nanocomposite film with 10% Ag NPs content exhibited notable mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of 239 MPa and a Young's modulus of 5.91 GPa, and an exceptional electrical conductivity of 401.6 S/cm. The nanocomposite films also demonstrated enhanced hydrophobicity, UV resistance, antibacterial properties, and flame retardancy. Pressure sensors based on the PBO/Ag nanocomposite films showed high sensitivity and stability, whereas electric heaters exhibited remarkable heat resistance, rapid response times, and elevated heating temperatures. Additionally, a polyaniline (PANI) coating doped with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was synthesized on the PBO/Ag nanocomposite films, resulting in flexible PBO/Ag@PANI/CNT electrodes. These electrodes, with 30% CNTs, achieved an impressive areal capacitance of 6885.13 mF/cm 2 and maintained 82.67% of their initial capacitance after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. These findings highlight the significant potential of PBO nanofiber-based nanocomposites in flexible electronics and advanced energy storage systems.

When artificially introducing an ortho -amide group into benzoxazine monomer , the conversion of polybenzoxazine (PBZ) into polybenzoxazole (PBO) could happen at higher temperature. However, the mechanism investigation for this reaction is far from enough, which is very significant for the PBO fabrication from PBZ. In this work, we designed three kinds of benzoxazines (PIC-abz, 4-MEP-abz and 6-MEP-abz) containing both pyridyl and amide group with similar structures. The existence of intramolecular N–H⋯N H-bonding involved with amide group and the N atom in pyridine ring , as well as the N–H⋯O H-bonding between the amide N–H and the O atom in oxazine ring, were confirmed by 1 H– 1 H nuclear overhauled effect spectroscopy (NOESY) and concentration dependent 1 H NMR spectra. In addition, the respective strength of these H-bonding in different precursors was calculated by non-covalent interaction (NCI) simulation. Results showed that besides the performance of resulted PBZ, the conversion temperature of PBZ into PBO was significantly influenced by the N–H⋯N hydrogen bonding involved with pyridyl and amide groups. Based on which, the mechanism of PBO formation was proposed and systematically investigated. The outcome of this work will help us to obtain PBO in a more efficient and reasonable manner starting from PBZ.
