Nanoflower core-shell Cu@Pd catalysts for glycol oxidation reaction with an enhanced performance

Jianguo Yu,Zehui Yu,Yunling Jia,Ting Ran,Ming Song,Yanshuang Zhang,Qing Wang,Yuning Qu,Lili Wang

Direct alcohol fuel cells' performance is significantly affected by the phase and composition of the catalyst, thereby the development of high-performance alcohol oxidation catalysts is essential. In this study, PVA preparation was used for the first time to create PdCu core-shell nanoflowers with a high electrochemically active surface area and a potent synergistic effect. Notably, the presence of PVA causes Pd and Cu nanoparticles with different reduction rates to form a core-shell structure, and the Pd nanoparticles continue to migrate regularly under the action of PVA, forming a flower-like morphology with a high degree of branching. Cu@Pd 22.3 catalyst exhibited 13 times higher catalytic performance (4353.04 mA mg Pd −1 ) than Pd/C (334.09 mA mg Pd −1 ) in ethylene glycol oxidation reaction. The Cu@Pd 22.3 catalyst also exhibits higher stability than commercial Pd/C in stability tests lasting up to 20,000 s. This core-shell combination and highly branched structural design result in more active sites for fast ion adsorption/desorption,offering an original method to improving the activity and endurance of polyol oxidation.

Synergistic lattice strain and electronic modulation in PdCu nanowires to boost waste plastics upcycling

Kun Ma,Lingkai Zhang,Huizhen Li,Meixiang Zheng,Hongzhe Xu,Xuejing Cui,Songliang Liu,Hao Dong,Luhua Jiang

PdCu nanowires were prepared by a facile one-pot wet chemical method. • The catalysts possess an ultrathin diameter and remarkable compressive strain. • The catalysts exhibit excellent performance for PET to GA conversion. • Lattice strain and electronic modulation synergistically enhance the catalytic performance. Electrocatalytic upgrading of waste PET-derived ethylene glycol (EG) to glycolic acid (GA) is crucial for the efficient circular utilization of plastics, yet suffers from low activity and poor selectivity. In this work, PdCu nanowires (PdCu NWs) were controllably synthesized as a highly efficient catalyst for the electrocatalytic upcycling of PET into GA, with a high Faradaic efficiency of 94.4% for GA and a GA selectivity of 93.0% at 0.65 V (vs. RHE), as well as excellent stability, significantly superior to Pd NWs and commercial Pd Black. Electrochemical tests associated with in situ electrochemical attenuated total reflection-surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy reveal that PdCu NWs significantly enhance the adsorption of hydroxide (OH − ) species, which promotes the generation of the key intermediate *OH, thereby accelerating the selective oxidation of PET-derived EG to GA. DFT calculations demonstrate that the introduction of Cu to Pd induces significant compressive strain and electronic effects, which enhance the adsorption of *OH species on the catalyst surface, lower the activation energy barrier of the rate-determining step, and thus accelerate the reaction kinetics. Ultrathin PdCu nanowires (PdCu NWs), featuring exclusive compressive strain and electronic effects, are demonstrated as a highly active and selective electrocatalyst for upcycling PET-derived ethylene glycol to glycolic acid. Synergistic composition-structure engineering in PdCu nanoalloys for efficient ammonia electrosynthesis from nitrate wastewater

Hengyuan Liu,Xintong Huang,Jinkai Qiu,Yongqi Jia,Yingzhe Liu,Cheng Lian,Qiang Yang,Zhuo Chen,Jianhong Xu

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NitrRR) has emerged as a promising sustainable alternative for ammonia synthesis via wastewater remediation. However, its practical implementation remains challenged by sluggish reaction kinetics and limited selectivity. Herein, we demonstrate a microfluidic strategy to achieve the synergistic composition-structure engineering of the ultrasmall (∼24 nm) PdCu nanoparticles (NPs). The well-designed PdCu NPs exhibit exceptional NitrRR performance, achieving an ammonia yield of 89.70 mg h −1 mg cat. −1 at −0.8 V vs RHE. The synergistic electronic interaction within the bimetallic system, involving electron transfer from Cu to Pd, optimizes intermediate adsorption and thereby lowers the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS, *NO→*HNO) by up to 0.17 eV. The composition-dependent trade-off was further elucidated, with Pd-rich sites favoring the competing hydrogen evolution reaction while Cu-rich sites required higher overpotentials. An optimal balance between these effects was struck, achieving a Faradaic efficiency of 92.03 %. Moreover, the engineered pore-channel network significantly enhances mass transport and active site accessibility, accelerating ammonia production kinetics. These findings establish fundamental design principles for advanced NitrRR electrocatalysts, thereby paving the way for sustainable solutions to pressing environmental and energy challenges.

Untrafine PdCu alloys dispersedly immobilized on hairy graphene oxide for enhanced electrocatalytic nitrate reduction

Ling Wang,Yan Wu,Yutong Zhang,Mingye Zhao,Xiaoshuang Yin,Wenzhong Yang,Hui Xu

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction (NO 3 RR) is an efficient technique for nitrate removal. In this work, we successfully synthesized Pd x Cu y @ r GO- g -P4VP composite as electrocatalytic catalyst for nitrate reduction. Our synthetic method ensured uniform distribution of PdCu alloy nanoparticles on the P4VP-grafted r GO without notable aggregation. This approach achieves precise control over alloy particle size, consistently below 5 nm, thus providing a higher specific surface area that increases the exposure of active sites and potentially enhances catalytic efficiency. Additionally, the P4VP polymer chains effectively stabilized the PdCu alloy particles, preventing detachment and significantly improving the durability and recyclability of the catalyst. The optimized Pd x Cu y @ r GO- g -P4VP catalyst exhibited outstanding performance at an applied voltage of −1.4 V, with a nitrate conversion rate of 99.41% and nitrogen selectivity of 80.37%. These findings underscore the potential of this method for high-efficiency and selective electrocatalytic denitrification, providing valuable insights for future catalyst design.

Achieving high-performance nitrate electrocatalysis with PdCu nanoparticles confined in nitrogen-doped carbon coralline

Miao Chen,Haifeng Wang,Yuye Zhao,Wei Luo,Li Li,Zhenfeng Bian,Lianjun Wang,Wan Jiang,Jianping Yang

Complex porous carbon nanostructures with homogeneously embedded nanoparticles and intricate architectures show promise as high-performance catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate a direct surfactant co-assembly approach for the fabrication of well-dispersed PdCu nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped porous carbon with three-dimensional coralline structures. Owing to their porous features and unique frameworks, the PdxCuy@N-pC coralline-like nanostructures offer large surface areas, accessible active sites, and excellent nitrate electrocatalytic ability. The composite catalyst Pd4Cu4@N-pC exhibits outstanding catalytic performance with a high nitrate removal rate of ∼95%, nitrogen selectivity of ∼80%, and removal capacity of 22 000 mg N per g PdCu. More importantly, the present work opens up a broad horizon for architectures of nanoparticles confined in coralline-like 3D porous carbon structures with superior performance and promising large-scale applications.

Facile Synthesis of PdCu Echinus-Like Nanocrystals as Robust Electrocatalysts for Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Zhicheng Zhang,Guohong Ren,Yajun Liu,Ying Liang,Mingqian Wang,Shishan Wu,Jian Shen

Graphical PdCu echinus-like nanocrystals were fabricated via a facile method, and they exhibit high catalytic activity toward methanol oxidation reaction. Exploiting high-performance and inexpensive electrocatalysts for methanol electro-oxidation is conductive to promoting the commercial application of direct methanol fuel cells. Here, we present a facile synthesis of echinus-like PdCu nanocrystals (NCs) via a one-step and template-free method. The echinus-like PdCu NCs possess numerous straight and long branches which can provide abundant catalytic active sites. Owing to the novel nanoarchitecture and electronic effect of the PdCu alloy, the echinus-like PdCu NCs display high electrocatalytic performance toward methanol oxidation reaction in an alkaline medium. The mass activity of echinus-like PdCu NCs is 1202.1 mA mg Pd −1 , which is 3.7 times that of Pd/C catalysts. In addition, the echinus-like structure, as a kind of three-dimensional self-supported nanoarchitecture, endows PdCu NCs with significantly enhanced stability and durability. Hence, the echinus-like PdCu NCs hold prospect of being employed as electrocatalysts for direct alcohol fuel cells.

Ultrathin PdCu Nanosheet as Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Formate Oxidation Reaction and Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Zhipeng Liu,Jinling Xue,Yinshi Li

The development of robust nonplatinum electrocatalysts to enhance the performance of formate oxidation reaction (FOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is one of the key issues for the commercialization of direct formate fuel cells (DFFCs), but still challenging. Herein, a structurally controlled 3D flower-like PdCu nanosheet (NS) catalyst is synthesized by a method of oil bath reduction under mild conditions as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for DFFCs. Under the dual tuning on the composition and intermetallic phase, the PdCu nanosheet catalyst exhibits 8.67 times higher mass activity for anodic formate oxidation reaction than the commercial Pd/C. For the cathodic ORR, a positive shift half-wave potential is obtained for PdCu nanosheets exceeding Pt/C. Moreover, after a long-term stability test, the current density of the PdCu nanosheet catalyst for FOR and ORR can be well maintained with the least activity decay. When the PdCu NSs are used as optimized anode and cathode electrodes for DFFCs enable a peak power density as high as 53 mW cm −2 at room temperature, which is about 1.3 times higher than that of the commercial Pd/C and Pt/C as anode and cathode electrodes. This work provides a potential strategy to improve the catalytic performance of non-Pt-based nanocatalysts.

Enhanced oxygen reduction activity of Pt shells on PdCu truncated octahedra with different compositions

Xingqiao Wu,Qingfeng Xu,Yucong Yan,Jingbo Huang,Xiao Li,Yi Jiang,Hui Zhang,Deren Yang

Pd@Pt core–shell nanocrystals with ultrathin Pt layers have received great attention as active and low Pt loading catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the reduction of Pd loading without compromising the catalytic performance is also highly desired since Pd is an expensive and scarce noble-metal. Here we report the epitaxial growth of ultrathin Pt shells on PdxCu truncated octahedra by a seed-mediated approach. The Pd/Cu atomic ratio (x) of the truncated octahedral seeds was tuned from 2, 1 to 0.5 by varying the feeding molar ratio of Pd to Cu precursors. When used as catalysts for ORR, these three PdxCu@Pt core–shell truncated octahedra exhibited substantially enhanced catalytic activities compared to commercial Pt/C. Specifically, Pd2Cu@Pt catalysts achieved the highest area-specific activity (0.46 mA cm−2) and mass activity (0.59 mA μgPt−1) at 0.9 V, which were 2.7 and 4.5 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C. In addition, these PdxCu@Pt core–shell catalysts showed a similar durability with the commercial Pt/C after 10 000 cycles due to the dissolution of active Cu and Pd in the cores.

Bidirectional controlling synthesis of branched PdCu nanoalloys for efficient and robust formic acid oxidation electrocatalysis

Bo Yang,Wanqing Zhang,Shenglan Hu,Chengzhou Liu,Xiaoqu Wang,Youjun Fan,Zhe Jiang,Jun Yang,Wei Chen

Through a two-way control of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and hydrochloric acid (HCl), the PdCu nanoalloys with branched structures are synthesized in one step by hydrothermal reduction and used as electrocatalysts for formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR). In this two-way control strategy, the CTAB is used as a structure-oriented surfactant , while a certain amount of HCl is used to control the reaction kinetics for achieving gradual growth of multi-dendritic structures. The characterizations including scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggest that PdCu nanoalloys with unique multi-dendritic branches have favorable electronic structure and lattice strain for electrocatalyzing the oxidation of formic acid. In specific, among the electrocatalysts with different Pd/Cu ratios, the Pd 1 Cu 1 branched nanoalloys have the largest electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) and the best performance for the FAOR. The catalytic activity of the Pd 1 Cu 1 branched nanoalloys is 2.4 times that of commercial Pd black. After the chronoamperometry test, the Pd 1 Cu 1 branched nanoalloys still maintain their original morphologies and higher current density than that of the commercial Pd black. In addition, in the CO-stripping tests, the initial oxidation potential and the oxidation peak potential of the PdCu branched nanoalloys for CO adsorption are lower than those of commercial Pd balck, evincing their better anti-poisoning performance.

Co-electrodepositional synthesis of PdCu alloy nanocatalysts for boosting the electrocatalytic semi-hydrogenation of alkynols

Mengfan Hao,Xiao Chen,Weilin Shen,Yan Du,Ruisi Ding,Deng Hu,Yanbo Sun,Changhai Liang

Electrocatalytic selective hydrogenation represents a green and atom-efficient synthetic route, yet it remains fundamentally challenging to simultaneously achieve high activity and exceptional selectivity while suppressing competing side reactions, primarily hydrogen evolution and over-hydrogenation. To address this, we fabricate atomically Pd 1 Cu 1 alloy nanoparticles on carbon cloth (Pd 1 Cu 1 /CC) via a facile co-electrodeposition method. The catalyst enables highly efficient and selective electrocatalytic hydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MBY) to 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (MBE) in an aqueous alkaline electrolyte, delivering an MBE production rate of 0.88 mol h −1 g Cat. −1 with 96% selectivity and 92% Faradaic efficiency—performance superior to its monometallic counterparts. The catalyst also demonstrates excellent stability, broad substrate applicability, and promising potential for industrial application. Combined experimental and theoretical results reveal that the Pd 1 Cu 1 /CC catalyst exhibits a lowered activation energy (40.89 kJ mol −1 ), which not only facilitates active *H generation via water dissociation but also weakens the adsorption of MBE due to Cu-induced electronic modulation. This dual mechanism ensures efficient *H supply and prompts product desorption, thereby synergistically boosting selectivity while suppressing both over-hydrogenation and the hydrogen evolution reaction. This work provides insights into the design of advanced electrocatalysts for selective hydrogenation from the perspective of alloy catalyst, contributing to sustainable organic synthesis strategies.

Engineering the D-Band Center of PdCu Catalysts by Atomic Ordering for Superior Hydrodechlorination Catalysis

Huang Heng,Yin ChunYu,Xia Tao,Zhou Yebin,Wan Dongchuang,Zhu Xiaofeng,Jiang Kaijun,Hu Rongrui,Xiang Zhenli,Ma Chaofan,Li Xiaonian,Lu Chunshan

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) hydrodechlorination is hindered by chlorine poisoning and the instability of monometallic catalysts, limiting their practical application. In this work, long-range ordered PdCu intermetallic compounds were synthesized via a microwave-assisted method. Characterization confirmed that microwave treatment induced strong Pd–Cu electronic interactions and lattice ordering, thereby facilitating the formation of intermetallic phases. Catalytic evaluations demonstrated that the PdCu/C-Ordered catalyst achieved an ethane production rate of 4.47 mmol·g cat –1 ·h –1 at 300 ° C with an apparent activation energy of 31.28 kJ/mol, while maintaining exceptional stability over a 300 h continuous operation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further elucidated that the intermetallic phase, characterized by a d-band center positioned closer to the Fermi level, exhibited enhanced reactant adsorption and activation capabilities. Concurrently, it significantly lowered the HCl desorption energy barrier, thereby effectively mitigating chlorine poisoning effects. This research provides a novel pathway for the design of high-efficiency hydrodechlorination catalysts based on the precise regulation of electronic structures.

Selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol catalyzed by supported bimetallic PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3

Yi-Si Feng,Cui Liu,Yu-Mei Kang,Xue-Mei Zhou,Liang-Liang Liu,Jin Deng,Hua-Jian Xu,Yao Fu

Biomass glycerol is an important raw material for many available chemicals, such as 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO is considered as a sustainable process with renewable potential application. In this paper, a series of bimetallic PdCu-KF/γ-Al 2 O 3 were prepared and the structures of catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM and CO 2 -TPD. By measuring the activity of the catalyst, we found that PdCu-KF/γ-Al 2 O 3 (Pd:Cu:KF   =   0.05:1:0.5) can be used as an efficient catalyst for hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO, with 98.3% selectivity and nearly 100% conversion (200   °C, 2.5   MPa initial H 2 pressure, 20   h).
