Enhanced visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of Er3+:Y3Al5O12/PdS–ZnS by conduction band co-catalysts (MoO2, MoS2 and MoSe2)

Yahui Song,Shengnan Wei,Yang Rong,Chunxiao Lu,Yang Chen,Jun Wang,Zhaohong Zhang

Several conduction band co-catalysts (CBCOs), MoO 2 , MoS 2 and MoSe 2 , were prepared to improve the visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /PdS–ZnS from water splitting, in which the PdS is a valence band co-catalyst (VBCO) used to facilitate the photo-generated hole transfer and the Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 is an up-conversion luminescence agent from visible light to ultraviolet light used to provide the ultraviolet light satisfying the energy demands of wide band-gap ZnS photocatalyst . XRD , SEM, TEM and EDX analyses were employed to confirm the morphology, microstructure and composition of the prepared photocatalysts. UV–vis absorption and PL spectra were also determined to explore luminescence effect of the Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 . The visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of the prepared photocatalysts was evaluated by using Na 2 S and Na 2 SO 3 as sacrificial reagents in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation . The influential factors such as contents of CBCOs (MoO 2 , MoS 2 and MoSe 2 ) and visible-light irradiation time on visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /PdS–ZnS–MoX 2 (X = O, S and Se) were investigated in detail. Particularly, Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /PdS–ZnS–MoSe 2 with 0.30 wt% MoSe 2 shows the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity.

Attenuation effects of ZVI/PDS pretreatment on propagation of antibiotic resistance genes in bioreactors: Driven by antibiotic residues and sulfate assimilation

Qi Zhao,Qing-Lian Wu,Hua-Zhe Wang,Qi-Shi Si,Lu-Shi Sun,De-Nian Li,Nan-Qi Ren,Wan-Qian Guo

Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) combined biological system was a promising technology for treating antibiotic wastewater. However, how pretreatment influence antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) propagation remains largely elusive, especially the produced by-products (antibiotic residues and sulfate) are often ignored. Herein, we investigated the effects of zero valent iron/persulfate pretreatment on ARGs in bioreactors treating sulfadiazine wastewater. Results showed absolute and relative abundance of ARGs reduced by 59.8%− 81.9% and 9.1%− 52.9% after pretreatments. The effect of 90-min pretreatment was better than that of the 30-min. The ARGs reduction was due to decreased antibiotic residues and stimulated sulfate assimilation. Reduced antibiotic residues was a major factor in ARGs attenuation, which could suppress oxidative stress , inhibit mobile genetic elements emergence and resistant strains proliferation. The presence of sulfate in influent supplemented microbial sulfur sources and facilitated the in-situ synthesis of antioxidant cysteine through sulfate assimilation, which drove ARGs attenuation by alleviating oxidative stress. This is the first detailed analysis about the regulatory mechanism of how sulfate radical-based AOPs mediate in ARGs attenuation, which is expected to provide theoretical basis for solving concerns about by-products and developing practical methods to hinder ARGs propagation.

Reveals that electron transfer regime mediated by electron shuttle rather than adjacent transfer in B-doped 3D porous carbon framework: Exploration of interactions and identification of the main active site

Meng-Zhu Qin,Yanyan Bian,Huai-Yuan Niu,Wen-Xin Fu,Xue-Gang Zhang,Qi-Yao Hu,Duan Guo,Cheng-Gang Niu,Lei Zhang

The determination of non-radical pathways and identification of the main active site in the persulfate (PS) activation by B-doped carbonaceous materials are still controversial. Therefore, sodium citrate was selected as the carbon source and self-template for synthesizing a B-doped carbonaceous materials to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) in this work. Multiple characterizations and experiments revealed that the electron transfer regime was responsible for the activation of PDS. On the one hand, the metastable surface complexes were generated due to the adsorption of PDS onto the catalyst surface via inner-sphere interaction. On the other hand, the interaction between BPA and the catalyst was verified as charge-assisted hydrogen bonding. In addition, BC 3 was identified as the main active site. Based on the detailed and in-depth exploration of the electron transfer regime during the PDS activation of B-doped carbonaceous materials, this work further elucidated interactions, and the vital role of BC 3 in PDS activation.

Synergistic and efficient degradation of acid red 73 by using UV, H2O2, and PDS under neutral conditions: water matrix effects and transformation pathways

Lin Yingzi,Hou Ao,Li Hao,Shi Chunyan,Chen Lei,Yuan Baoling,Liu Yi,Wang Yu,Liu Xiaochen

Dye wastewater with high concentration, large molecular weight, complex structure, and certain toxicity has brought a serious burden to the environment. In this study, acid red 73 dye (AR73) was used as the model pollutant to compare the degradation effects of different systems on AR73. The influence factors of a UV/hydrogen peroxide/peroxydisulfate (UV/H 2 O 2 /PDS) composite system, such as H 2 O 2 dosage, initial concentration of AR73, initial pH value, anion concentration, and actual water, on the degradation of AR73 were investigated. Compared with other systems, the UV/H 2 O 2 /PDS composite system had the best degradation effect of AR73, with a degradation efficiency of 98.98%, which conforms to the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetic model, the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetic constant ( k obs ) is 0.1339 min −1 . And the synergy coefficients in this complex system were all greater than 2. Specifically, the degradation efficiency of the UV/H 2 O 2 /PDS composite system for AR73 was the highest when the initial pH was neutral. The presence of anions inhibited the degradation of AR73, and the real water reduced the degradation efficiency for AR73. Electron spin resonance (ESR) detection and free radicals capture test demonstrated that hydroxyl radical ( · OH) was the main reactive species in AR73 degradation, and its 80.66–84.93% contribution. With the destruction of the structure of AR73 by free radicals, anilines, phenols, and oxalic acid were found to be the main intermediate products during the degradation of AR73 by gas-phase mass spectrometry and UV–vis spectrograms. The changes in toxicity during the degradation of AR73 by the UV/H 2 O 2 /PDS complex system were also assessed.

Synergistic activation of PDS by a waste-derived catalyst from electrolytic manganese residue and coal gasification fine slag: Performance and non-radical mechanism

Xinmeng Jiang,Lihui Gao,Shulei Li,Haicheng Zhao,Yijing Zhang

In this study, a novel heterogeneous catalyst (E-EMRCG) was successfully fabricated by synergistically integrating electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) and coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) for the efficient activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS). By leveraging the abundant transition metals (e.g., Mn and Fe) inherently present in EMR as active catalytic centers, the incorporation of CGFS significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity and facilitated the structural transformation of these transition metal species, thereby accelerating the PDS activation efficiency. Under optimized conditions (1.0 g L −1 catalyst, 10 mmol L −1 PDS), the E-EMRCG/PDS system achieved a remarkable 97.8% removal of 50 mg L −1 salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA) within 120 min. Mechanistic investigations, including quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and electrochemical measurements, revealed that the degradation was primarily driven by a non-radical pathway involving surface-confined activated persulfate-carbon complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and chromatographic analysis further identified the O9, O11, N10, and H12 sites as the most vulnerable positions for nucleophilic and electrophilic attacks, leading to the formation of phenolic intermediates. This research provides a sustainable "waste-to-resource" strategy for developing low-cost transition-metal-based catalysts for the advanced remediation of organic-contaminated mineral processing wastewater.

Silver and g-C3N4 co-modified biochar (Ag-CN@BC) for enhancing photocatalytic/PDS degradation of BPA: Role of carrier and photoelectric mechanism

Yaxuan Liu,Chen Yu,Huixia Lu,linan Liu,Jingchun Tang

Photocatalytic property of nano Ag is weak and its enhancement is important to enlarge its application. Herein, a novel strategy of constructing silver g-C 3 N 4 biochar composite (Ag-CN@BC) as photocatalyst is developed and its photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) coupled with peroxydisulfate (PDS) oxidation process is characterized. Characterization result showed that silver was evenly embedded into the g-C 3 N 4 structure of the nitrogen atoms format, impeding agglomeration of Ag by distributing stably on biochar. In optimum condition, BPA of 10 mg/L could be degraded completely at pH of 9.0 with a 0.5 g/L photocatalyst, 2 mM PDS in Ag-CN@BC-2 (Ag/melamine molar ratio of 0.5)/PDS system (99.2%, k  = 4.601 h −1 ). Ag-CN@BC shows superior mineralization ratio in degrading BPA to CO₂ and H₂O via active radical way, including holes ( h ⁺), superoxide radicals (•O 2 ⁻ ), sulfate radicals (SO 4 • ⁻ ), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Proper amount of silver can be dispersed effectively by gC 3 N 4 , which is responsible for improving the visible-light absorbing capability and accelerate charge transfer during activation of PDS for BPA degradation, while biochar as carrier in the composite is supposed to enhance the photoelectric degradation of BPA by reducing the band gap and increasing the photocurrent of Ag-CN@BC catalyst. Ag-CN@BC exhibits excellent catalyst stability and photocatalytic activity for treatment of toxic organic contaminants in the environment.

An efficient Brønsted acidic polymer resin for the carbonylation of formaldehyde to glycolic acid

Shi Qiqi,Guo Heqin,Chen Congbiao,Hou Bo,Jia Litao,Li Debao

In the present work, a series of sulfonic polymer-based acid catalyst PDS-x’s was obtained by hydrothermal method. The physical and chemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, pyridine-adsorbing IR, acid–base titration, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and CHNS elemental analysis. The carbonylation of formaldehyde was chosen as a probe reaction to test the catalytic performance. The results show that the content of acid sites and specific surface area can be adjusted by changing the molar ratio of sodium 4-vinylbenzenesulfonate (SVBS) to divinylbenzene (DVB). The catalyst performance results show that the PDS-x’s can efficiently catalyze glycolic acid synthesis. And a high glycolic acid yield up to 96% was obtained on PDS-2.1 due to its large specific surface area, plentiful mesoporosity as well as suitable acid concentration. This data are even higher than those on super-strong CF 3 SO 3 H and commercial resin Amberlyst-15. Moreover, the carbonylation of formaldehyde is a structure-sensitive reaction, the isolated and monolayer dispersed -SO 3 H is much more active than aggregated −SO 3 H. Furthermore, the catalyst has high stability.

Comparative study of Fe(II)/sulfite, Fe(II)/PDS and Fe(II)/PMS for p-arsanilic acid treatment: Efficient organic arsenic degradation and contrasting total arsenic removal

Yuan Gao,Yun Luo,Zhao Pan,Zhu Zeng,Wenxia Fan,Jingyu Hu,Zhong Zhang,Jinxing Ma,Yang Zhou,Jun Ma

As a widely used feed additives, p-arsanilic acid (p-AsA) frequently detected in the environment poses serious threats to aquatic ecology and water security due to its potential in releasing more toxic inorganic arsenic. In this work, the efficiency of Fe(II)/sulfite, Fe(II)/PDS and Fe(II)/PMS systems in p-AsA degradation and simultaneous arsenic removal was comparatively investigated for the first time. Efficient p-AsA abatement was achieved in theses Fe-based systems, while notable discrepancy in total arsenic removal was observed under identical acidic condition. By using chemical probing method, quenching experiments, isotopically labeled water experiments, p-AsA degradation was ascribed to the combined contribution of high-valent Fe(IV) and SO 4 •− in these Fe(II)-based system. In particular, the relative contribution of Fe(IV) and SO 4 •− in the Fe(II)/sulfite system was highly dependent on the molar ratio of [Fe(II)] and [sulfite]. Negligible arsenic removal was observed in the Fe(II)/sulfite and Fe(II)/PDS systems, while ∼80% arsenic was removed in the Fe(II)/PMS system under identical acidic condition. This interesting phenomenon was due to that ferric precipitation only occurred in the Fe(II)/PMS system. As(V) was further removed via adsorption onto the iron precipitate or the formation of ferric arsenate-sulfate compounds, which was confirmed by particle diameter measurements, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Through tuning solution pH, complete removal of total arsenic could achieve in all three systems. Among these three Fe-based technologies, the hybrid oxidation-coagulation Fe(II)/PMS system demonstrated potential superiority for arsenic immobilization by not requiring pH adjustment for coagulation and facilitating the in-situ generation of ferric arsenate-sulfate compounds with comparably low solubility levels like scorodite. These findings would deepen the understanding of these three Fe-based Fenton-like technologies for decontamination in water treatment.

Efficient Polymerization Removal of Phenolic Pollutants by In Situ-Formed Iron-Complexes in Thermally Activated Peroxydisulfate Systems

Yang Li,Bo He,Jinbin Lin,Baoxue Zhou,Francesco Parrino,Mingce Long

Polymerization-based abatement of phenolic pollutants triggered by thermally activated sodium peroxydisulfate (PDS) is an effective remediation approach characterized by low oxidant consumption but restricted by narrow reaction conditions and risk of overoxidation of the organics. In particular, the polymerization is ineffective for recalcitrant phenolics and at low temperature, low initial concentration of phenolics, and high PDS dosage. The present contribution demonstrates that adding ferric chloride significantly enhances the removal efficiency, polymerization ratio, and PDS utilization efficiency, especially under the unfavorable conditions mentioned above. In the FeCl3-enhanced heat/PDS system, polymerization is promoted by iron-phenolic complexes, which favor the generation of more stable radical monomers through ligand to metal charge transfer. The ferrous ions thereby formed can accelerate PDS activation, thus synergistically contributing to polymerization. In comparison to the conventional mineralization-based advanced oxidation technologies, this process exhibits significantly higher oxidant utilization efficiency under a broad range of conditions, reducing PDS consumption by 85% when used for the treatment of real coking wastewater. Results highlight the great potentiality of this technology for the removal of phenolic pollutants and bring fundamental insights for low-carbon emission and sustainable remediation of industrial wastewater.

Advanced electrochemical oxidation of EDTA-Ni via cobalt single-atom catalysts: Exploring indirect persulfate activation pathways

Kuang He,Kaixuan Zheng,Li Wang,Kaihua Huang,Yong Wen,Yu Wang,Ning Hu,Jianwei Du,Lyumeng Ye,Lin Cheng

This study explores an innovative electrochemical strategy for the removal of the highly stable and toxic EDTA-Ni complex found in electroplating wastewater. Utilizing a cobalt-based single-atom catalyst (Co-NC) in an electro-enhanced system, we achieved significant activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for effective degradation of EDTA-Ni. Under optimal conditions of 40 mA current density and a pH range of 3–7, more than 97% of EDTA-Ni (1 mM) was successfully degraded within 90 min. Through detailed electrochemical experiments, we identified that atomic hydrogen (H*) played a crucial role in the indirect activation of PDS, facilitating the formation of reactive sulfate radicals (·SO4-). Computational analysis using density functional theory (DFT) confirmed that the H*-mediated reduction pathway had a notably low energy barrier (ΔGbs = 0.51 eV), making it the dominant activation mechanism. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) further revealed the primary degradation intermediates, providing insights into the breakdown process of EDTA-Ni. This research underscores the potential of Co-NC catalyst as a highly effective catalyst for treating persistent heavy metal complexes in advanced oxidation systems.

Exploring the degradation of ofloxacin in sewer overflows by Fe(Ⅵ)/PMS, Fe(Ⅵ)/PDS, and Fe(Ⅵ)/SPC: Overlooked synergistic effect of oxidation and in-situ coagulation

Qian Guo,Zuxin Xu,Wenhai Chu,Yingying Zhou,Xiaoting Gao,Cheng Ye

Sewer overflows are a potential source of emerging contaminants to urban waters, posing a threat to ecosystems and human health. Herein, the performance and mechanism of ferrate(Ⅵ) (Fe(Ⅵ))/peroxymonosulfate (PMS), Fe(Ⅵ)/peroxydisulfate (PDS), and Fe(Ⅵ)/percarbonate (SPC) for the degradation of ofloxacin (OFL) in overflows were comparatively investigated. These systems achieved efficient degradation of OFL and the removal of conventional pollutants. Particularly, Fe(Ⅵ)/PMS showed better degradation performance for OFL with a degradation efficiency of 98.8 %. The dominant reactive oxygen species for OFL degradation in the Fe(Ⅵ)/PMS, Fe(Ⅵ)/PDS, Fe(Ⅵ)/SPC systems were singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), sulfate radical (SO 4 · - ), and hydroxyl radical (·OH), respectively. High-valent iron species played an important role in the Fe(Ⅵ)/PMS and Fe(Ⅵ)/PDS systems. Notably, the synergistic effect of oxidation and in-situ coagulation played a key role in OFL degradation, which determined the superior performance of Fe(Ⅵ)/PMS. The formed flocs with Fe-O-P bond acted as a highway to promote the electron transfer from OFL to PMS, resulting in the efficient degradation of OFL in Fe(Ⅵ)/PMS system. Moreover, a same degradation pathway of OFL was found, and the toxicity of the degradation products was reduced, especially in the Fe(Ⅵ)/PMS system. This study provided a new strategy for overflows treatment.

In situ formation of fluorescent silicon-containing polymer dots for alkaline phosphatase activity detection and immunoassay

Liu Guoyong,Zhao Jiahui,Yan Mengxia,Zhu Shuyun,Dou Wenchao,Sun Jian,Yang Xiurong

The discovery and application of analyte-triggered fluorophore generation or fluorogenic reaction are significant and beneficial to the development of novel fluorescence (FL) analysis method. In this study, for the first time, we have reported a fluorogenic reaction to prepare fluorescent silicon-containing polymer dots (Si-PDs) by simply mixing N -[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (DAMO) and hydroquinone (HQ) in aqueous solution at ambient temperature. Inspired by the alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-catalyzed hydrolysis of the substrate sodium 4-hydroxyphenyl phosphate (4-HPP) into HQ and the resultant HQ-controlled intense green Si-PDs generation, we have established a straightforward ALP activity assay by innovatively employing commercially available 4-HPP as the substrate. More significantly, the specific preparation method, clear formation mechanism and excellent performance enable the Si-PDs as well as its generation process to develop facile and attractive FL immunoassay. With the help of the universal ALP-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) platform and corresponding antibody, a convenient and conceptual ALP-based fluorescent ELISA has been constructed and applied in sensing cardiac troponin I (cTnI), a well-known biomarker of acute myocardial infarction. Our research via in situ formation of fluorescent nanomaterials has great potential application in ALP activity assay, inhibitor screening, and disease diagnosis.
