Food waste worldwide has been threatening the environment and resulting in high carbon emissions. Although anaerobic fermentation is a potential solution transforming food waste into valuable chemicals, a large amount of the fermentation residue remains as solid waste. For closing the circular economy loop for food waste valorization, we proposed a thermo-chemical activation of a fermentation residue produced from a mixture of food waste and sludge to prepare a nitrogen-enriched, advanced carbon material. This could be used as a support to synthesize Pd/C, Pt/C and Au/C catalysts for the aqueous-phase hydrogenation of vanillin to vanillyl alcohol at mild reaction conditions. The produced alcohol increased sixfold the commercial value of the original aldehyde. The catalytic performance (based on the vanillin conversion and vanillyl alcohol yield) followed the order of Pd/C > Pt/C > Au/C. The Pd/C catalyst showed an excellent catalytic activity (>99% vanillin conversion and > 99% vanillyl alcohol selectivity) at optimized reaction conditions (i.e., 30 °C and 0.7 MPa H 2 for 90 min, with 2 mmol vanillin/10 mg catalyst), along with high reusability and stability (up to four consecutive runs). These catalytic features outperformed those of a commercial Pd/C catalyst owing to: (i) high reduction degree and stabilization of the Pd particles on the carbon support, which accommodated a higher proportion of pyridinic than pyrrolic nitrogen, and (ii) rapid adsorption of the aldehyde group on the catalyst combined with rapid desorption of the newly formed hydroxymethyl group. This exceptional catalytic behavior was corroborated by efficient hydrogenation of other lignin-derived aromatic aldehydes, including p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and syringaldehyde, to their respective alcohols. Our results can bring a novel use for food waste in catalysis and represent a sustainable and efficient conversion of biomass into value-added chemicals and advanced materials.

Nanocrystalline transition metal phosphides (CoP and Ni2P) were successfully synthesized by a simple calcination method by using transition metal hydroxides and NaH2PO2 as raw materials. Their catalytic activities for the hydrogen evolution from water electrolysis were evaluated with silicotungstic acid as an electron-coupled-proton buffer, whereby hydrogen and oxygen could be produced separately. It was found that the CoP sample showed higher catalytic activity (32 mmol min−1 g−1) and good stability (12 h) as compared to the Ni2P sample, and its catalytic activity could rival that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. The electrochemical results revealed that CoP had high cathodic current and small charge transfer resistance, which further suggested it was indeed an efficient noble metal-free catalyst for hydrogen evolution from water electrolysis.

To promote hydrogen production through water splitting, novel porous 3D Al doped CoP 3 nanowire arrays on carbon fiber paper are successfully fabricated as an effective self-supported electrode for hydrogen evolution reaction . The results indicate that the electrocatalytic performance of CoP 3 can be dramatically enhanced via Al doping. It only needs an overpotential of only 40 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 with a small Tafel slop of 43 mV dec −1 for the Al (10%)-CoP 3 nanowire arrays. Moreover, the Al (10%)-CoP 3 NAs/CFP exhibit superior HER efficiency to Pt/C film at high overpotentials due to prompt release of hydrogen bubbles on the special nanowire arrays surfaces. This study demonstrates an avenue for further improving the electrocatalytic activity via tuning the electronic structures and adjusting the surface morphologies through heteroatoms doping.

A hybrid catalyst structure can provide abundant active sites and tailored electronic properties, but the major challenge lies in achieving delicate control over its composition and architecture to improve the catalytic activity toward different electrochemical reactions simultaneously. Herein, we present the rational design of a magic hybrid structure with low Pt loading (5.90 wt%), composed of CoPt 3 and CoPt nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon (CoPt 3 /CoPt⊂P L NC). Importantly, it shows superior multifunctional catalytic activity in alkaline conditions, requiring a low overpotential of 341 and 20 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 for the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR)/hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively, and it delivers a half-wave potential of 0.847 V for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Theoretical calculations reveal that the metal–carbon hybrid modulates kinetic behavior and induces electron redistribution, achieving the energetic requirements for multiple electrocatalysis. We demonstrate sustainable H 2 production utilizing solely the CoPt 3 /CoPt⊂P L NC catalyst, without external electric power input, suggesting its inspiring practical utility.

Efficient conversion of biomass-based platform molecules into high-value derivatives is recognized as one formidable challenge in biomass upgrading. In this work, a one-pot deep eutectic solvents-assisted solvothermal method was developed for the modification of the commercial Pt/C catalysts by introducing a secondary metal (M = Sn, Bi, Ge, Sb, Pb). The structural and electronic properties of the catalysts were precisely tuned. Among the screened metals, the addition of Sn yielded the most significant improvement in catalytic activity. The optimized PtSn0.5/C-140 catalyst achieved superior furfural (FAL) conversion and furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity under mild conditions (20 °C, 2 MPa H2). Comprehensive characterizations, including XRD, HRTEM, XPS, and H2-TPD, confirmed the formation of Pt-Sn solid-solution phase. Furthermore, Characterization and reaction results revealed that the electronic and geometric effects induced by Sn modulated Pt active sites, significantly enhancing the adsorption of the active H species. Additionally, the SnOxspecies adjacent to the Pt-Sn sites served as hydrogen spillover acceptors, further accelerating the hydrogenation process. The synergy between the Pt-Sn solid-solution phase and SnOxspecies is identified as the origin of the superior performance at room temperature. These findings provide a new strategy for the design of high-performance biomass conversion catalysts by upgrading commercial noble metal catalysts.

In order to improve the catalytic performance of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), it is pivotal to increase the density and accessibility of the active sites. Herein, we have developed a template-free melamine-assisted cocalcined strategy to afford Fe-embedded and N-doped carbons (Fe–N–C) with not only high density of atomically dispersed Fe–Nx active sites but also abundant three-dimensional interconnected mesopores by directly pyrolyzing Fe-ZIF-8 covered with a controllable melamine layer. It is demonstrated that the introduction of melamine in the precursor plays a key role in constructing various carbonized products with controllable morphology, porosity, and components. With an optimal mass ratio 1:1 of melamine to Fe-ZIF-8, the resultant Fe@MNC-1 exhibits excellent ORR activity and stability, which exceeds 20 wt % commercial Pt/C catalyst (with a half-wave potential of 0.88 V vs 0.85 V) in an alkaline electrolyte and is even comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalyst (with a half-wave potential of 0.78 V vs 0.80 V) in an acidic electrolyte. To the best of our knowledge, Fe@MNC-1 can be ranked among the best nonprecious metal electrocatalysts for ORR in both alkaline and acidic media. The present synthetic strategy may provide a new opportunity for the design and construction of metal–organic framework-derived nanomaterials with rational composition and a desired porous structure to boost their electrocatalytic performance.

Developing efficient, robust, and cost-effective catalysts to boost the electrocatalytic properties of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for overall water splitting is fundamentally important yet very challenging. Herein, we report a facile method to prepare Ru-based aerogels for HER, OER, and water electrolysis . Specifically, Ru aerogel exhibits comparable HER performance with Pt/C, evidenced by a close overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 , a smaller Tafel slope, and an outperformed long-term stability. Among a series of RuCo aerogels, the Ru 0.7 Co 0.3 aerogel has the best OER performance superior to the RuO 2 benchmark catalyst, with a very small overpotential of 272 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a low Tafel slope value of 41.6 mV dec −1 , and the improved long-term durability. The excellent OER performance of the Ru 0.7 Co 0.3 aerogel is mainly attributed to the RuCo synergistic catalytic effect, the abundant oxygen vacancies , and the structural merits of the sample. Notably, in the practical overall water splitting test, the combined Ru and Ru 0.7 Co 0.3 aerogel catalyst outperforms the Pt/C + RuO 2 couple. This study can shed light on preparation of metal aerogel-based bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting and beyond.

We report zinc cobalt-layered double hydroxides (ZnCo-LDH) as the active cathode materials for the development of high-performance Zn-ZnCo batteries . Electrochemical investigations show the battery’s capacity increases linearly with increasing the ZnCo-LDH loading (up to 60 mg cm −2 ). The resulting Zn-ZnCo battery exhibits excellent rate performance and cycle stability, retaining 86% of its capacity even after 5000 cycles of testing. By incorporating ZnCo-LDH with a Pt/C-coated gas diffusion layer to form an integrated multifunctional air-cathode, we demonstrate a hybrid Zn battery, which combines the merits of Zn-ZnCo and Zn-air batteries to show a characteristic two-stage charge-discharge voltage profile. The current work demonstrates the linear relationship between the battery capacity and the active material loading. The results also highlight that a greater battery capacity requires further increasing of loading though very challenging.

Cost-effective electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) play a key role in the field of renewable energy. Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to the search of alternative materials, Pt/C is still the most efficient electrocatalyst for the HER. Nevertheless, decreasing the loading of Pt in the designed eletrocatalysts is of significance. However, with low Pt loading, it is challenging to maintain excellent catalytic performance. Herein, a new catalyst (Pt/NPC) was prepared by dispersing Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs) with an average diameter of 1.8 nm over a three-dimensional (3D) carbon network co-doped with N and P. Because of the high electronegativity of the N and P dopants, PtNPs were uniformly dispersed on the carbon network via high electronic affinity between Pt and carbon, affording a Pt/NPC catalyst; Pt/NPC exhibited superior HER activity, attributed to the down-shift of the Pt d-band caused by the donation of charge from N and P to Pt. The results show that Pt/NPC with an ultralow Pt loading of 1.82 wt.% exhibits excellent HER performance, which corresponds to a HER mass activity 20.6-fold greater than that observed for commercial 20% Pt/C at an overpotential of 20 mV vs. RHE.

Traditional Pt/C is the most classic electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells, in which the ORR mechanism is generally understood based on Pt nanoparticles alone. Here, based on the revealed fact of the inevitable coexistence of Pt nanoparticles and single atoms on such Pt/C, via density functional theoretical calculation, the pathways for the ORR process have been revealed: besides the known pathways on isolated Pt nanoparticles and single atoms, the other two pathways with enhanced ORR performance occur on neighboring Pt nanoparticles and single atoms due to their unique synergetic effects with the enhanced four-electron pathway by decreasing the H2O2 yield. Inspired by such insights, the mass ratio between Pt nanoparticles and single atoms was optimized to maximize their synergetic effect, which yielded an optimal hybrid Pt/C with Pt 8.0 wt % (5 wt % Pt SAs with 3 wt % Pt NPs). This mixture exhibited remarkable ORR performance on the same level as Pt/C with Pt 20 wt %, achieving a huge enhancement in Pt utilization. Such work deepens the understanding of the catalytic ORR mechanism of traditional Pt/C and can guide the design of Pt- or other precious-metal-based nanocatalysts with a high performance/price ratio for all kinds of energy processes.

N-Doped porous tremella-like Fe3C/C electrocatalysts derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were fabricated via a facile approach. The simply designed catalytic materials have unique fluffy multilayer interconnected porous morphology, which provides a large specific surface area and effectively prevents the agglomeration of nanoparticles. These special features create more active sites (Fe–Nx) on the surface of the electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the presence of the Fe–Nx active sites was verified via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effect of Fe intake through pyrolysis of MOFs materials was also studied and the composite with 0.04 g Fe source exhibited excellent ORR performance, a very small hydrogen peroxide yield, and followed the four-electron transfer pathway. The ORR activity of the electrocatalyst is comparable to that of commercial Pt/C, while the stability is even better than the latter in an alkaline solution. The facile method of preparing a multilayer porous N-doped tremella-like Fe3C/C electrocatalyst is a promising electrode material for a wide range of applications in fuel cells and metal–air batteries.

Designing efficient formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) catalysts with remarkable membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performance in a direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) medium is significant yet challenging. Herein, we report that the monoclinic-phased platinum–tellurium nanotrepang (m-PtTe NT) can be adopted as a highly active, selective, and stable FAOR catalyst with a desirable direct reaction pathway. The m-PtTe NT exhibits the high specific and mass activities of 6.78 mA cm–2 and 3.2 A mgPt–1, respectively, which are 35.7/22.9, 2.8/2.6, and 3.9/2.9 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C, rhombohedral-phased Pt2Te3 NT (r-Pt2Te3 NT), and trigonal-phased PtTe2 NT (t-PtTe2 NT), respectively. Simultaneously, the highest reaction tendency for the direct FAOR pathway and the best tolerance to poisonous CO intermediate can also be realized by m-PtTe NT. More importantly, even in a single-cell medium, the m-PtTe NT can display a much higher MEA power density (171.4 mW cm–2) and stability (53.2% voltage loss after 5660 s) than those of commercial Pt/C, demonstrating the great potential in operating DFAFC device. The in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy jointly demonstrate that the unique nanostructure of m-PtTe NT can effectively optimize dehydrogenation steps and inhibit the CO intermediate adsorption, as well as promote the oxidation of noxious CO intermediate, thus achieving the great improvement of FAOR activity, poisoning tolerance, and stability. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the direct pathway is the most favorable on m-PtTe NT than r-Pt2Te3 NT and t-PtTe2 NT. The higher activation energy to produce CO and the relatively weaker binding with CO of m-PtTe NT result in the better CO tolerance. This work achieves remarkable FAOR and MEA performances of advanced Pt-based anodic catalysts for DFAFCs via a phase engineering strategy.
