NaOH-promoted Pt/TiO 2 catalysts are successfully prepared by a facile impregnation method assisted by NaOH and tested for the toluene oxidation reaction under visible light irradiation. Keeping molar ratio of Pt:Na = 1:8, the 0.1Pt-Na/TiO 2 catalyst (0.1 mol% Pt) shows excellent catalytic performance with more than 60% of toluene conversion at 45 °C and achieving total toluene removal at 280 °C, which is significantly better than 0.1Pt/TiO 2 catalyst. The structures and properties of catalysts are characterized by XRD, SEM, N 2 adsorption, XPS and UV–vis spectra. The positively charged Pt species stabilized by NaOH are the most active sites for photo-thermal catalyzing toluene oxidation. The influence of Pt loading and the effect of supports (active TiO 2 and inert Al 2 O 3 ) are also discussed.

Tuning Strong Metal-support Interactions (SMSI) is a key strategy to obtain highly active catalysts, but conventional methods usually enable TiO x encapsulation of noble metal components to minimize the exposure of noble metals. This study demonstrates a catalyst preparation method to modulate a weak encapsulation of Pt metal nanoparticles (NPs) with the supported TiO 2 , achieving the moderate suppression of SMSI effects. The introduction of silica inhibits this encapsulation, as reflected in the characterization results such as XPS and HRTEM, while the Ti4 + to Ti3 + conversion due to SMSI can still be found on the support surface. Furthermore, the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) as a probe reaction revealed that once this encapsulation behavior was suppressed, the adsorption capacity of the catalyst for small molecules like H 2 and CO was enhanced, which thereby improved the catalytic activity and facilitated the hydrogenation of CAL. Meanwhile, the introduction of SiO 2 also changed the surface structure of the catalyst, which inhibited the occurrence of the acetal reaction and improved the conversion efficiency of C=O and C=C hydrogenation. Systematic manipulation of SMSI formation and its consequence on the performance in catalytic hydrogenation reactions are discussed.

A novel Pt/TiO 2 /MWCNT-COOH nanocomposite was fabricated for ultrasensitive fleroxacin detection. • The synergistic effect of MWCNT-COOH and Pt/TiO 2 effectively prevents nanoparticle agglomeration and enhances electron transfer. • The sensor exhibits a wide linear range (0.01–10 μM), a low detection limit (0.002 μM), and excellent anti-interference capability. • Long-term stability of 90.3% after 25 days demonstrates outstanding practical durability. • Successful application in tap water and milk samples with recoveries of 98.4%–105.1% confirms real-world feasibility. A novel electrochemical sensor based on a Pt/TiO 2 /MWCNT-COOH nanocomposite was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of fleroxacin (FLX). To construct this platform, Pt/TiO 2 nanoparticles were first synthesized via a hydrothermal method and then uniformly anchored onto carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes through ultrasonic-assisted dispersion. Various characterizations confirmed the successful formation of this heterogeneous structure, which effectively mitigated nanoparticle agglomeration and provided a significantly expanded electroactive area. As a result of this unique architecture, the Pt/TiO 2 /MWCNT-COOH/GCE exhibited substantially enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward FLX oxidation compared to bare and single-component modified electrodes, an improvement attributed to the synergistic effect between the excellent conductivity of MWCNT-COOH and the high catalytic activity of Pt/TiO 2 . Under optimized conditions, the sensor demonstrated a wide linear range (0.01–10 μM), a low limit of detection (0.002 μM), as well as remarkable anti-interference capability, good reproducibility, and long-term stability (sustained 90.3% for 25 days). Benefiting from these outstanding analytical properties, the sensor was successfully applied to detect FLX in tap water and milk samples, achieving satisfactory recoveries ranging from 98.4% to 105.1%. These results highlight its significant potential for antibiotic residue monitoring in complex real-world samples. Scheme 1. Schematic representation of the fabrication of Pt/TiO 2 /MWCNT-COOH/GCE for the sensitive determination of FLX. A Pt/TiO 2 /MWCNT-COOH nanocomposite was constructed as an electrochemical sensing platform for fleroxacin (FLX). The three-dimensional conductive network effectively prevents nanoparticle agglomeration and provides abundant active sites. The sensor achieves a wide linear range (0.01–10 μM), low detection limit (0.002 μM), and excellent stability (90.3% after 25 days). Successful FLX detection in tap water and milk demonstrates its practical application potential. Download: Download high-res image (119KB) Download: Download full-size image

Amantadine (AMN) is a persistent and structurally recalcitrant antiviral contaminant. In this work, a recoverable Pt/TiO2 porous ceramic composite was fabricated by photodeposition and ceramic immobilization for UV-driven AMN degradation. Under Box-Behnken-optimized conditions (1.5 wt % Pt loading, catalyst dosage 2.0 g/L, and initial pH 9.0), AMN removal reached about 72% within 4 h, and the catalyst retained >50% removal after six cycles with low Pt leaching. Scavenger experiments indicated that h+ and •O2– were the dominant reactive species, and HPLC-MS identified six transformation products, from which two tentative degradation pathways were proposed. QSAR-based evaluation suggested lower bioaccumulation potential and reduced developmental toxicity for most terminal products, although incomplete predictions for some species warrant caution. These results support immobilized Pt/TiO2 photocatalysis as a practical strategy for AMN-contaminated water treatment.

Catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) is the most efficient way to purify indoor air of HCHO pollutant. This work investigated rare earth La-doped Pt/TiO 2 for low concentration HCHO oxidation at room temperature . La-doped Pt/TiO 2 had a dramatically promoted catalytic performance for HCHO oxidation. The reasons for the La promotion effect were investigated by N 2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction, CO chemisorption , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-angle annular dark field scanning TEM . The Pt nanoparticle size was reduced to 1.7 nm from 2.2 nm after modification by La, which led to higher Pt dispersion, more exposed active sites and enhanced metal-support interaction. Thus a superior activity for indoor low concentration HCHO oxidation was obtained. Moreover, the La-doped TiO 2 can be wash-coated on a cordierite monolith so that very low amounts of Pt (0.01 wt%) can be used. The catalyst was evaluated in a simulated indoor HCHO elimination environment and displayed high purifying efficiency and stability. It can be potentially used as a commercial catalyst for indoor HCHO elimination.

Photothermocatalytic oxidation is an environmentally-friendly, low-temperature, and high-efficient method to remove the air pollutant. Yet, the lack of active, inexpensive, and superior stability catalysts has greatly limited its extensive utilization. In this work, the effect of single-atom Pt loading on TiO 2 support has been theoretically and experimentally studied to improve photothermocatalytic performance for the toluene combustion through flame spray pyrolysis (FSP). Pt loading can play two crucial roles into TiO 2 optimization: (1) The low-valence Pt cation incorporated into TiO 2 lattice is dramatically responsible for the anatase-rutile transformation (ART) and formation of sufficient oxygen vacancies ; (2) Introducing the defect energy level and Pt-3d orbitals remarkably promote the charge separation efficiency of single-atom catalysts. Moreover, the existence of single-atom Pt nanoparticles can signally boost the activity of surface adsorbed and lattice oxygen, as well as substantially reduce the oxygen vacancy formation energy. Thus, the toluene removal under light irradiation reaches 90% conversion below 160 °C and is maximally 18 °C lower than that under only thermocatalytic oxidation. It is attributed to larger specific surface area (SSA), outstanding low-temperature reducibility, extremely dispersed hybrid PtO x , more surface active oxygen, and higher mobility of bulk oxygen. Interestingly, when the oxygen-fuel equivalent ratio φ distinctly increases by shifting precursor solvent from xylene to ethanol, the photothermocatalytic property of toluene can be remarkably enhanced on single-atom Pt catalysts. It is due to the higher Pt dispersion resulting from more intense burning and drastic turbulent mixing, as well as the superior ratio of the metallic Pt active sites originating from higher flame temperature. Eventually, the rate-determining step of C 7 H 8 combustion on Pt/TiO 2 and Cu/TiO 2 slab are all the C C bond fracture of maleic anhydride to form acetic anhydride species, with the energy barriers of 112.03 and 188.74 kJ/mol, respectively.

The spillover of oxygen species is fundamentally important in redox reactions, but the spillover mechanism has been less understood compared to that of hydrogen spillover. Herein Sn is doped into TiO 2 to activate low-temperature (<100 °C) reverse oxygen spillover in Pt/TiO 2 catalyst, leading to CO oxidation activity much higher than that of most oxide-supported Pt catalysts. A combination of near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in situ Raman/Infrared spectroscopies, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the reverse oxygen spillover is triggered by CO adsorption at Pt 2+ sites, followed by bond cleavage of Ti-O-Sn moieties nearby and the appearance of Pt 4+ species. The O in the catalytically indispensable Pt-O species is energetically more favourable to be originated from Ti-O-Sn. This work clearly depicts the interfacial chemistry of reverse oxygen spillover that is triggered by CO adsorption, and the understanding is helpful for the design of platinum/titania catalysts suitable for reactions of various reactants.

Large amounts of tritiated water (HTO) will be produced during the operation of nuclear power plants and fusion devices, which is harmful to the environment and human due to its radioactivity and toxicity. So, the tritium concentration of tritiated water must be reduced to a very low value before discharge. Hydrogen-water isotope exchange reaction (H 2 + HTO→H 2 O + HT) based on palladium membrane reactor has been proposed to process tritiated water. However, a comprehensive study about the influence of operation parameters on the membrane reactor performance is insufficient, which is not conducive to the design of reactor in practical application. Moreover, the commonly used Pt/Al 2 O 3 or Ni/SiO 2 catalysts are not active for tritiated water dissociation, so the catalytic activity of these catalysts is not high. In order to process tritiated water more effectively, a two-stage membrane reactor has been designed and established in this work, and Pt/TiO 2 catalyst with rich oxygen vacancies is used to catalyze the hydrogen-water isotope exchange reaction for the first time. The membrane reactor performance shows an approximate linear relationship with a new combined parameter S 0.5 P 1.5 R / F 2 ( S is membrane area , F is water flow rate , P is vapor partial pressure, R is swamping ratio), which can be used predict the membrane performance . The isotope exchange reaction activity of Pt/TiO 2 is better than that of Pt/Al 2 O 3 due to its good ability for water dissociation and the hydrogen spillover effect. At last, a tritiated water processing experiment by using two-stage membrane reactor with Pt/TiO 2 catalyst with rich oxygen vacancies has been carried out. The tritium decontamination factor reaches 40588, which is the highest experimental value so far. The results indicate that the two-stage Pd membrane reactor based on hydrogen-water isotope exchange reaction is an efficient technology for tritiated water processing.

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs), ubiquitous semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in indoor environments, pose adverse effects on human health. However, their degradation mechanisms and pathways remain unclear. Herein, we developed an efficient photothermal catalyst by introducing defects (oxygen vacancies, OVs) on TiO2(P25) surfaces via electron beam irradiation technology with different irradiation doses (100, 300, 500, and 700 kGy). The TiO2with defects was employed as a support to prepare Pt-TiO2catalysts for the photothermal degradation of di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEMP) and dimethyl phthalate (DMP), two representative PAEs. TiO2pre-treated with a 300 kGy irradiation dose supported the Pt catalyst (Pt-Ti-P-300) and presented the optimal catalytic performance for DEMP and DMP degradation. Characterization results confirmed that OVs were successfully introduced to the catalysts. Meanwhile, OVs induced by electron beam irradiation expanded the light absorption range and improved the generation and separation of photogenerated carriers, which significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of the catalysts for PAE degradation. Importantly, the degradation mechanism and pathway of DMP were further explored by using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). These findings provide important insights into the electron beam irradiation-mediated regulation of catalysts and the photothermal catalytic removal of PAEs in indoor environments.

Herein, we developed a novel and simple strategy to construct Pt-decorated TiO 2 /β-Ni(OH) 2 nanosheet arrays that steadily deliver large current densities in alkaline electrolyte. It is of great interest to find that the versatile role of few-layered Ti 3 C 2 endows the unique growth mechanism of Pt/TiO 2 /β-Ni(OH) 2 . It is worth noting that the interconnected array electrode exhibits noticeable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, achieving ultralow overpotentials of 107, 145 and 184 mV at high current densities of 500, 1000 and 1500 mA cm −2 , respectively, which outperforms most reported HER electrocatalysts. It requires only 1.95 V to drive 1000 mA cm −2 towards full water electrolysis along with considerable stability. It is demonstrated for the first time that the synergistic effect of Pt and TiO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 the enhanced HER performance. This work reports a robust nanoarray support for Pt electrocatalyst to break through its intrinsic barrier in alkaline HER and under large current density.

Noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) modified semiconductors play important roles in heterogeneous catalysis . However, for the ultra-small NMNPs (<5 nm) on TiO 2 , the problems of easy agglomeration and quick deactivation highlight the need for highly efficient protection of ultra-small NMNPs. Here, we introduce a novel structure of carbonized liquid crystals (CLCs) protected Pt NPs on TiO 2 , which involves in-situ photo-reduction of chloroplatinic acid to ultra-small Pt NPs in lamellar liquid crystals. According to the results of morphological structures, CLCs changed the contact type of Pt/TiO 2 from ‘face-contact’ to ‘point-contact’, which was consistent with our simulation results. Compared with the bare Pt/TiO 2 , the visible-light photocatalytic H 2 production rate of C–Pt/TiO 2 exhibited 1.75-fold enhancement under the protection of CLCs (26.73 mmol g −1 h −1 vs. 15.26 mmol g −1 h −1 ). Especially, the marriage of CLCs and the traditional Pt/TiO 2 photocatalyst achieved long-term stability, which remained 87% of the original rate at the sixth cycle.

Multicomponent heterojunctions have attracted considerable attention for the potential applications in photodriving applications. However, the limited number of active sites on the surface and the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers restrict the improvement of the performance of photothermal conversion and photocatalytic degradation. Here, a ternary nanohybrid composed of PbS, Pt, and TiO2 is presented for the first time. PbS nanocrystals evolved from octahedral to a unique 24-faceted morphology were monitored and described systematically. Then, they were selectively deposited by Pt nanoparticles and coated with a TiO2 thin nanoshell. Under 808 nm near-infrared laser irradiation, the photothermal conversion performance and photocatalytic reduction rates of these nanohybrids were investigated in depth. Among them, the PbS-Pt-TiO2 nanohybrids exhibited the highest photothermal conversion efficiency and fastest degradation speed of Rhodamine B when compared to PbS-Pt and pure PbS, which are attributed to the effective light absorption of 24-faceted PbS nanocrystals and the outer TiO2 shell, the abundant catalytic active sites provided by Pt nanoparticles, and the excellent separation and transportation efficiency of hot carriers between different components.
