Enhanced CH4 Selectivity in CO2 Hydrogenation on Bimetallic Pt–Ni Catalysts with Pt Nanoparticles Modified by Isolated Ni Atoms

Min Chen,Bolang Li,Fei Wang,Jinhou Fang,Kai Li,Changbin Zhang

Catalytic CO2 hydrogenation is a promising way to produce chemicals and has recently received much attention; however, designing catalysts with special product selectivity still remains a challenge. Here, we interestingly found that the Pt–Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst tended to have high CH4 selectivity, while both Pt/γ-Al2O3 and Ni/γ-Al2O3 had high CO selectivity. The characterization results showed that the Pt–Ni bimetallic catalyst was composed of Pt nanoparticles with surrounding Ni atoms. The results of in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the direct disassociation of CO2 to CO on the Pt/γ-Al2O3 and the decomposition of formate species to CO on Ni/γ-Al2O3. However, the presence of Pt–Ni bimetallic sites changed the hydrogenation pathway, in which the electronic interaction between Pt particles and surrounding Ni atoms promoted the further hydrogenation of formate species to CH4. This study provides insights into the understanding of the mechanisms of CO2 hydrogenation on bimetallic catalysts.

Ultrasonic spray pyrolysis assembly of a TiO2–WO3–Pt multi-heterojunction microsphere photocatalyst using highly crystalline WO3 nanosheets: less is better

Han Zheng,Changhua Wang,Xintong Zhang,Lina Kong,Yingying Li,Yunyu Liu,Yichun Liu

Multi-heterojunctions are more promising than single-heterojunctions in photocatalysis due to the availability of more interfaces between each component. However, photocatalytic activity is highly dependent on the contact mode of individual components. In this work, we assemble TiO2–WO3–Pt multi-heterojunction microspheres using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis and focus on their contact mode governed photocatalytic activity. The results reveal that using highly crystalline WO3 nanosheets as building blocks could particularly enhance the photocatalytic activity of a TiO2/WO3 system toward the degradation of gaseous acetaldehyde and isopropyl alcohol. Furthermore, loading Pt nanoparticles onto WO3 nanosheets could facilitate a more prominent enhancement of activity than that of TiO2/Pt, benefiting from the two-electron reduction of oxygen at the interface of WO3/Pt. Meanwhile, the high crystallinity of WO3 nanosheets allows for a loading amount of Pt as low as 0.04 wt% in the TiO2–WO3–Pt system, which reduces the catalyst cost in comparison with that of the conventional amount of 1 wt%.

Plasma-Assisted Surface Interactions of Pt/CeO2 Catalyst for Enhanced Toluene Catalytic Oxidation

Bingxu Chen,Bangfen Wang,Yuhai Sun,Xueqin Wang,Mingli Fu,Junliang Wu,Limin Chen,Yufei Tan,Daiqi Ye

The performance of plasma-modified Pt/CeO2for toluene catalytic oxidation was investigated. Pt/CeO2nanorods were prepared by wet impregnation and were modified by thermal (PC-T), plasma (PC-P), and combined (PC-TP and PC-PT) treatments. The modified catalysts were characterized by TEM (transmission electron microscope), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller), H2-TPR, O2-TPD, XPS, UV-Raman, and OSC tests. The significant variation of the surface morphologies and surface oxygen defects could have contributed to the modification of the Pt/CeO2catalysts via the plasma treatment. It was found that plasma could promote the surface interaction between Pt and CeO2, resulting in the thermal stability of the catalyst. The Pt-Ce interaction was also conducive to an increase in the number of oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, PC-PT and PC-TP showed a significant difference in oxygen vacancy concentrations and catalytic activities, which illustrated that the treatment sequence (plasma and thermal treatment) affected the performance of Pt/CeO2. The PC-PT sample showed the highest catalytic activity with T100at 205 °C. This work thus demonstrates that plasma in combined treatment sequences could assist surface interactions of catalysts for enhanced toluene catalytic oxidation.Keywords:non-thermal plasma;Pt/CeO2;oxygen vacancies;treatment Sequence

A Novel CoO/PT-C3N4 Composite Catalyst for Photocatalytic Degradation of Diesel Oil

Bao Er-Peng,Dong Ruichen,Zhang Shuoqing,Li Huan,Zhang Weiguo,Zou Jijun,Xu Qiang

The photocatalysis of graphtic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) material has been widely used for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. However, g-C 3 N 4 still has some drawbacks, such as the high recombination of photo-induced electron–hole pairs and weak absorption of light irradiation. To further improve the photodegradation performance of g-C 3 N 4 , a novel composite photocatalyst (CoO/ PT-C 3 N 4 ) has been prepared by using a one-pot calcination method, in which cobalt oxide (CoO) as a cocatalyst are introduced on the rectangular hollow substrate of g-C 3 N 4 (PT-C 3 N 4 ), The CoO/PT-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalyst delivers an excellent photodegradation performance for diesel oil under a simulated sunlight. It exhibits a high degradation efficiency of 95.92% after light irradiation for 2 h, which is much higher than that of pristine PT-C 3 N 4 . Free radical capture experiments manifest that the free radical of ·O 2− plays a major role for the photodegradation and main active radicals abide by the sequence: ·O 2−  > ·OH > h + . Moreover, the CoO/PT-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalyst delivers an excellent cyclic stability, which only degrades 8.71% photodegradation efficiency after 10 cycles. The improvement of CoO/PT-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalyst is ascribed to the formation of a heterojunction between CoO and PT-C 3 N 4 , which promotes the separation of photo-induced carriers. This work paves a new way for the exploration of photocatalyst for the organic pollutant degradation.

CeO2/3D g-C3N4 heterojunction deposited with Pt cocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Xiaoxue Zhao,Jingru Guan,Jinze Li,Xin Li,Huiqin Wang,Pengwei Huo,Yongsheng Yan

The conversion of CO 2 into high value-added carbon-based compounds through photocatalytic reduction technology is considered as one of the more promising strategies to solve the greenhouse effect. And construction of heterojunction photocatalysts can promote the separation of photoelectron-hole pairs, so as to achieve higher activity of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Hence, Pt@CeO 2 /3DCN heterojunction are prepared by calcination method and photoreduction technology. The photocatalytic results revealed that Pt@CeO 2 /3DCN show better photocatalytic activity for reducing CO 2 into CO and CH 4 , compared with 3DCN. Especially, Pt@45CeO 2 /3DCN shows the maximum photocatalytic activity of 4.69 and 3.03 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 for CO and CH 4 under UV light irradiation, respectively, and the reduction activity did not decrease significantly after five cycles. The enhanced photoreduction of CO 2 performance can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of the oxygen vacancies in CeO 2 for CO 2 activation and heterojunction for electron separation. Besides, Pt nanoparticles (NPs) on CeO 2 /3DCN can further promote the transfer of electrons, resulting in higher photocatalytic activity.

Role of Ni2+ ions in TiO2 and Pt/TiO2 photocatalysis for phenol degradation in aqueous suspensions

Yaru Wang,Jianjun Zhao,Xianqiang Xiong,Shengwei Liu,Yiming Xu

Anatase TiO 2 is the most studied environmental photocatalyst, but its efficiency is still not high enough to enable application. Herein we report a positive effect of Ni 2+ ions on the photocatalytic reaction in neutral aqueous solution. On addition of 1 mM Ni(ClO 4 ) 2 , the rates of phenol oxidation on TiO 2 and 0.5 wt.% Pt/TiO 2 increased by factors of 2.1 and 8.0, respectively. Meanwhile, the formation of organic intermediate was reduced, and the removal of total organic content was enhanced. Interestingly, Ni 2+ concentration did not change with irradiation time. Moreover, a maximum rate of phenol degradation was observed with Ni 2+ ions, occupying half the surface of TiO 2 or Pt/TiO 2 , where Ni(OH) + was more active than Ni(OH) 2 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identified a Ni 3+ species produced in absence of phenol. A (photo)electrochemical study revealed that Ni 2+ oxidation was favored over H 2 O oxidation, whereas Ni 2+ and Pt inhibited and facilitated O 2 reduction, respectively. It is proposed that the adsorbed Ni(OH) + on TiO 2 is oxidized to Ni 3+ by the photogenerated holes of TiO 2 , followed by regeneration through phenol oxidation. The Ni 2+ -catalyzed organic oxidation then promotes the Pt-catalyzed O 2 reduction, and vice visa, resulting into the greatly improved efficiency of charge separation. This work highlights the possibility of Ni 2+ ions as the hole mediator of organic oxidation over a semiconductor.

Enhanced conversion of cellulose to ethanol and propanol using a mesoporous Pt-WOx/Nb2O5 catalyst

Daguo Wu,Yong Liu,Xinghua Zhang,Jianguo Liu,Qi Zhang,Longlong Ma,Lungang Chen

The effective utilization of biomass is essential for addressing environmental challenges. The direct conversion of cellulose into chemicals and fuels is a key step in fostering a sustainable society. In this study, a mesoporous Pt-WO x /Nb 2 O 5 catalyst is synthesized and characterized using N 2 sorption, XRD, ICP, CO pulse, TEM, SEM, NH 3 -TPD, PY-IR, H 2 -TPR, and XPS. Under optimized catalyst preparation and reaction conditions, the yields of ethanol and propanol reach 50.3 % and 20.2 %, respectively. The mesoporous structure of Nb 2 O 5 , coupled with Pt, provides a rich balance of acidic and hydrogenation-active sites. Additionally, WO x plays a crucial role in the C C bond cleavage of cellulosic glucose and the C O bond cleavage of ethylene glycol, facilitating ethanol formation through Pt and the abundant Lewis acid sites from Nb 2 O 5 .

Sub-Nano Pt/β-FeOOH Quantum Dots for Photocatalytic Removal of Toluene: Catalyst Design, Preparation, and Benefits

Pei Mengxi,Lv Shangchun,Liu Yishui,Si Zhichun,Wu Xiaodong,Ran Rui,Weng Duan,Kang Feiyu

Photocatalytic removal of organic pollutants under solar irradiation at room temperature is considered an energy-saving technique of environmental remediation. However, photocatalysis is impeded by the poor response to visible light and fast charge recombination. In this work, sub-nano Pt/β-FeOOH quantum dots (QDs) were designed to shorten the charge migration path and obtain wide light harvesting. Interestingly, the crystalline β-FeOOH QDs can be obtained by loading sub-nano Pt particles via a reconstruction mechanism of amorphous FeOOH induced by H2 spillover, which facilitates the fast kinetics of charge transition and benefits the oxygen-rich surface of the catalyst for photocatalytic oxidation reactions. Moreover, the Pt-VO-Fe interfaces were proved to be the most active sites for the activation of O2. As a result, the catalyst exhibits a predominant photocatalytic performance in toluene oxidation, achieving a TOFPt of 0.591 min−1 at room temperature under visible light irradiation. This work provides a new perspective on the design and preparation of nanocatalysts for high-efficient photocatalysis under visible light irradiation.

Hierarchical Pt-decorated In2O3 microspheres with highly enhanced isoprene sensing properties

Baoqing Han,Hairong Wang,Wanying Yang,Jiuhong Wang,Xueyong Wei

For advanced fibrosis, isoprene is a typical characteristic marker that could be used to quickly screen the population for chronic liver disease (CLD). To achieve trace detection of isoprene, different mol% Pt-decorated In 2 O 3 and pure In 2 O 3 samples were prepared with the commonly used hydrothermal method . The obtained characterization results show that the prepared Pt-decorated In 2 O 3 (1 mol%) sample had Pt nanoparticles uniformly attached to the surface of porous hierarchical In 2 O 3 nanosheets , and the specific surface area was 62.3 m 2 /g. Subsequently, these sensors based on Pt–In 2 O 3 and pure In 2 O 3 nanomaterials were prepared, and their response characteristics were studied. The results show that the response of 1 mol% Pt–In 2 O 3 to isoprene gas was significantly enhanced, and the optimal working temperature was 200 °C. The response of 1 mol% Pt–In 2 O 3 to 5 ppb and 5 ppm isoprene was approximately 3.2 times and 25.9 times that of pure In 2 O 3 , respectively. Meanwhile, the 1 mol% Pt-modified sample exhibited excellent selectivity for isoprene relative to other biomarkers (carbon monoxide, hydrogen, ethanol, and ammonia). The sensor shows good repeatability and long-term stability. Therefore, the developed 1 mol% Pt-decorated In 2 O 3 was expected to be applied as a gas-sensitive material for breath isoprene, which could be suitable for large-scale CLD rapid breath detection.

Tuning charge transfer of Pt cluster by support defects in Pt/TiO2 for photocatalytic conversion of fatty acid into diesel-like alkane

Feng Long,Xincheng Cao,Peng Liu,Xia Jiang,Jianchun Jiang,Xiaolei Zhang,Junming Xu

Efficient deoxygenation for the bio-derived fatty acid is paramount to producing diesel-like alkane and usually requires harsh reaction conditions. Here, we reported an efficient conversion system for the photocatalytic conversion of fatty acid over Pt/TiO 2 catalysts and acid conversion higher than 99.0% (yield nearly 84.5%) under the mild conditions 30 °C, 0.1 MPa H 2, and 365 nm light. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the oxygen vacancies TiO 2 can achieve the charge transfer from TiO 2 support to Pt clusters. The electron-rich Pt cluster can promote hydrogen spillover to form a hydrogen-rich surface. Thus, it leads to the photo-decarboxylation C n-1 alkyl radical being amenable to proton hydrogenation to produce C n-1 alkane. Detailed characterization demonstrates that 0.50 wt% Pt/TiO 2 has superior photocatalytic performance. Introducing the Pt atoms can promote the formation the oxygen vacancies and reverse charge transfer, which determines the acid adsorption and conversion mechanism.

Low Pt loaded CNTs as efficient catalysts for CO oxidation

Yang Zou,Xue Li,Siqi Hu,Yumeng Wen,Xiaolong Liu,Chunxin Lu,Tingyu Zhu

Four types of Pt/C catalysts were synthesized by depositing platinum on various carbon materials, including graphene, graphitic carbon nitride, activated carbon, and carbon nanotubes. The microscopic structure and physicochemical properties of these catalysts were analyzed using different techniques such as TEM, XRD, BET, TGA, and XPS. The results indicated that platinum predominantly existed in the form of nanoparticles on graphene, graphitic carbon nitride, and carbon nanotubes. The performance of the catalysts in catalyzing CO oxidation was evaluated, and Pt/CNTs exhibited the highest efficiency compared to other catalysts. At a temperature of 170 °C, the conversion efficiency of CO on Pt/CNTs reached 96.5%. In situ DRIFTS experiments were performed, which did not show any peaks of CO adsorption on the surface of Pt/CNTs. Therefore, the oxidation of CO on Pt/CNTs was presumed to proceed via the Eley–Rideal (ER) mechanism. O2 was adsorbed and activated on Pt NPs to form a Pt NP–O–O*–CO structure with CO, which then decomposed to yield CO2 and an activated oxygen species (O*). Finally, O* reacted with CO again to produce CO2, completing the catalytic cycle.

Facile synthesis of PtMn@Pt core-shell nanowires for oxygen reduction reaction

Shaohui Zhang,Hao Cui,Haikun Zhou,Xiyu Tan,Pengfei Tan,Jun Pan

Platinum-based alloy nanowires are often employed in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their exceptional performances. However, most platinum-based alloy nanowires suffer from poor stability in strong acidic electrolytes, as well as their complex preparation methods. Herein, PtMn@Pt core-shell nanowires were successfully prepared by one-step hydrothermal with different concentrations of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and replacement reaction. The results show that the microstructure of nanowires gradually change with the increase of PVP concentration. Meanwhile, the outer layer of the PtMn nanowires contains a Pt-skin of about 1–2 nm. Moreover, the mass activity of the prepared PtMn@Pt core-shell nanowires with 50 mg PVP is 0.409 A mg −1 (@0.9 V), which is 3.86 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. The as-prepared nanowires display excellent stability mainly due to the existence of Pt-skin. This paper provides a relatively simple method to synthesize Platinum-based core-shell nanowires with outstanding ORR performance.
