Herein, a series of the Pt-based bimetallic catalysts (PtM x /SBA-15) are gained by using ultrasonic incipient wetness impregnation method (M = Co, Cu, Ni or Zn). The experimental results show that the catalytic performance (including catalytic activity (turnover frequency-TOF), selectivity to crotyl alcohol) of PtCo x /SBA-15 for catalyzing crotonaldehyde selective hydrogenation is the best among PtM x /SBA-15. Additionally, the ratio of Pt/Co in the PtCo x /SBA-15 catalysts is changed to successfully synthesize PtCo/SBA-15, PtCo 2 /SBA-15, PtCo 5 /SBA-15. It demonstrates that the selectivity of the PtCo x /SBA-15 catalysts for crotonaldehyde selective hydrogenation to crotyl alcohol is significantly improved with the increase of the Co content. The PtCo 5 /SBA-15 catalyst provides 83.8% conversion of crotonaldehyde, 94.3% selectivity to crotyl alcohol and TOF of 910.5 h −1 under mild reaction conditions (3.0 MPa H 2 , 80 °C and 2.0 h). And PtCo 5 /SBA-15 has much better catalytic performance (higher catalytic activity and selectivity to crotyl alcohol) than PtCu 5 /SBA-15, PtNi 5 /SBA-15 and PtZn 5 /SBA-15. The reasons are as follows: (1) PtCo alloy forms, which is conducive to crotonaldehyde adsorption and activation; (2) there is an appropriate synergy effect between Pt and Co, greatly improving the capacity of the catalyst activating hydrogen under mild conditions; (3) the electron transfers from Co to Pt, resulting in the increase of Pt electron density and decrease of Co electron density, then the Co sites are advantageous to C O group adsorption and activation and Pt sites for H 2 adsorbing and activating; (4) with the increase of the Co proportion in PtCo x /SBA-15, the synergy effect between Pt and Co in PtCo alloy strengthens and thus increases the selectivity of C O group hydrogenation.

The exploitation of an efficient and stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst plays a crucial role in the slow kinetics of the cathode in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). In this study, a catalyst loaded with PtCo alloys on Co and N co-doped carbon nanotubes (PtCoNC) was synthesized for oxygen reduction reaction, which has high activity and stability. The carbon nanotube structure provides efficient transport channels for reactant exchange and product transport, as well as provides a wealth of triple-phase sites, that improves the utilization of Pt. Further, the PtCoNC catalyst exhibits robust metal-support interactions, which can be attributed to the anchoring of the Co-Nx sites to Pt. Theoretical calculations indicating an increase in binding energy and a reduction in layer spacing provide conclusive verification of the presence of augmented interactions between PtCo nanoparticles and the support. As a result, the low Pt-loaded (0.025 mg cm-2) PtCoNC catalyst demonstrates superior ORR activity to that of commercial Pt/C with an impressive half-wave potential of 0.893 V in 0.1 M HClO4 solution. At 0.9 V, its mass activity and specific activity are 3 and 2.6 times that of commercial Pt/C, respectively. It also shows better stability in acidic environment.

Atomically ordered intermetallic catalysts have great potential for catalyzing efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), while the coupling of metal and support are not emphasized enough. Herein, we report an atomically ordered PtCo bimetallic catalyst coupled with N-doped ultrathin carbon shells (PtCo/NCS) for ORR by a facile natural ligand annealing strategy. The formed NCS prevents the high-temperature sintering of catalysts by physical confinement, and the coupling effect results in a stronger affinity between PtCo and NCS for PtCo/NCS. The optimal PtCo/NCS-5 exhibits more exceptional activity and durability, outperforming commercial Pt/C and Pt 3 Co/C catalysts (C-Pt 3 Co/C). It is proved that PtCo and NCS synergically account for the enhanced ORR performance for PtCo/NCS-5. More importantly, the compressive lattice strain effectively promotes electron redistribution and optimizes the electronic structure for PtCo/NCS-5. This work further deepens the understanding of catalytic mechanisms and provides new insight into the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts toward ORR.

PtCo nanoparticles anchored on P,S,N-doped porous carbon nitride enables strong ORR activity. • Hierarchical porosity and heteroatom doping enhance Pt dispersion and mass transport. • PtCo/P,S-HPCN shows 2.37 mA cm ⁻2 Pt ⁻1 activity and superior ORR durability. • Outperforms commercial Pt/C in both RDE and single-cell PEMFC performance tests. • Robust carbon nitride support resists corrosion in acidic, high-potential environments. Maximize the Pt utilization with high durability and efficient mass transport is crucial on the electrocatalyst design for the practical low-temperature fuel cell applications. In this work, we designed an ultrafine PtCo alloy nanoparticles distributed uniformly on phosphorus and sulfur co-doped hierarchical porous carbon nitride (PtCo/P,S-HPCN), synthesized via hydrothermal treatment, pyrolysis, and chemical reduction. The heteroatom-doped carbon nitride framework exhibits superior chemical stability compared to conventional carbon materials, while its hierarchical porous structure facilitates uniform dispersion of ultrafine PtCo nanoparticles (∼1.8 nm) and accelerates reactant transport. Synergistic effects from graphitic/pyridinic nitrogen species, P/S doping, and Pt–Co alloying modulate the electronic structure of Pt, optimizing *OOH binding and enhancing ORR kinetics. The optimized catalyst delivers excellent performance in acidic media, achieving a high half-wave potential (0.88 V vs. RHE), a mass activity of 0.91 mA µgPt⁻ 1 , and a specific activity of 2.37 mA cmPt⁻ 2 at 0.85 V. Remarkably, it retains 73% of its initial mass activity and loses only 11 mV in half-wave potential after 5000 durability cycles. In practical PEMFC tests, the PtCo/P,S-HPCN cathode achieves a peak power density of 0.42 W cm⁻², surpassing commercial 40 wt% Pt/C. This study demonstrates a promising strategy for designing durable, low-Pt and high activity catalysts for PEMFC applications. Pt-carbon materials are identified as state-of-the-art electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, it is still a big challenge to reduce the usage of Pt while maintaining the high efficiency and durability of the catalysts. Herein, we report a topologicallly defective nanoparticle carbon (DPC) supported PtCo nanoparticles (PtCo NPs) catalyst (denoted as PtCo-DPC) with a low Pt loading for efficient ORR. The topological carbon defects with a low work function can serve as anchoring sites to trap and stabilize PtCo NPs for driving ORR. Meanwhile, the presence of topological carbon defects leads to the electron structure regulation and the lattice contraction for the PtCo NPs. The prepared PtCo-DPC demonstrates an increased half-wave potential (E 1/2 , 0.85 V vs. RHE) with a low Pt loading (4.74 μg Pt cm -2 ) and delivers a superior mass activity (MA) with 1.02 A mg pt -1 . Furthermore, the PtCo-DPC maintains a high stability after 100,000 cycles of accelerated durability test (ADT).

In this work, we prepared reduced graphene oxide-supported PtCo nanospheres (PtCo/rGO) by a facile one-step hydrothermal method with the assistance of l -proline as the shape-directing agent. We systematically investigated the effects of various experimental conditions on the morphology and structure of the as-prepared PtCo/rGO hybrids. Compared with commercial Pt/C (10 wt%) and Pt/rGO catalysts, the as-prepared PtCo/rGO has better catalytic activity and poisoning resistance toward methanol electrooxidation and can be used as a promising catalyst for direct methanol fuel cells. Graphical abstract The rGO-supported PtCo nanosphere hybrids are successfully synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method with the assistance of l -proline. l -proline acts as shape-controlled agent for synthesizing PtCo/rGO. The as-prepared PtCo/rGO hybrids exhibit a higher electrocatalytic activity and poisoning-resistant ability for methanol oxidation in acidic media.

In this study, we synthesized PtM (M = Mn and Co) alloy nanofascicles by a bundle of ultrathin nanowires with a diameter of ∼2.0 nm. Furthermore, the compositions of alloys were tunable. These nanofascicles exhibited significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity due to their alloy nature, ultrathin size, and attractive morphological features. Noticeably, PtM electrocatalysts exhibited superior HER performances not only in the acidic but also in alkaline conditions when the electrocatalysts were deposited on a carbon paper. Pt8Co demonstrates the smallest η10 value of 26.1 mV under acidic conditions, which is significantly lower than that of Pt/C (63.4 mV). Under alkaline conditions, the η10 of Pt8Co is 47.2 mV, which is substantially lower than that of commercial Pt/C (187.9 mV). Pt6Mn shows the lower η10 values of 39.0 and 67.5 mV under acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively. In addition, PtM electrocatalysts exhibit excellent long-term durability under alkaline conditions.

In this work, PtCo bimetallic nanoparticles supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PtCo@MWCNTs) nanohybrid was prepared simply and used for the first time as a novel nanozyme in the colorimetric sensing of L-cysteine (L-Cys) and Cu 2+ . Due to its strong enzyme-like catalytic activity, the prepared PtCo@MWCNTs nanohybrid can catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to form ox-TMB without H 2 O 2 . Interestingly, the oxidase-like active of PtCo@MWCNTs was effectively suppressed by L-Cys, which could reduce ox-TMB to colorless TMB and lead to a pronounced blue fading, and the absorbance at 652 nm gradually decreased with increasing L-Cys concentration. On the other hand, the nanozyme activity of PtCo@MWCNTs can be recovered due to the complexation between L-Cys and Cu 2+ . Therefore, a colorimetric method based on PtCo@MWCNTs nanozyme was established to detect L-Cys and Cu 2+ . The results show that the assay platform has simple, rapid, sensitive performance and good selectivity. The detection limits for L-Cys and Cu 2+ are 0.041 μM and 0.056 μM, respectively, coupled with the linearities of 0.01 ~ 60.0 μM and 0.05 ~ 80.0 μM. The successful first application of PtCo bimetal-based nanozyme in colorimetric sensing herein opens a new direction for nanozyme and colorimetric analysis, showing great potential applications. In order to balance the defects and graphitization degree of porous nitrogen doped carbon supports, improve the corrosion resistance of carbon supports and the binding ability between carbon supports and active metal components, iodine was added during the carbonization process of polyaniline to prepare nitrogen doped carbon supports (NC-I) with higher graphitization degree. The presence of iodine enhances the graphitization degree of nitrogen doped carbon materials, thereby improving the conductivity and corrosion resistance of the support. At the same time, the content of graphite nitrogen in nitrogen doped carbon support is increased (2.07 at%), which enhance the oxygen reduction activity of the catalyst (PtCo/NC-I). Among them, the MA (0.48 A mg Pt − 1 ) and specific activity (0.70 mA cm Pt − 2 ) of PtCo/NC-1I have been greatly improved. After stability testing, the MA loss of PtCo/NC-1I was only 12%, much lower than that of PtCo/NC (30%) and JM Pt/C (36%). The NC-1I support with high graphitization degree enhances the structural stability of PtCo/NC-1I catalyst by enhancing the interaction between the support and PtCo NPs and improving the corrosion resistance of the support. This provides a new approach to enhance the stability and lifespan of ORR catalysts for PEMFC.

Zinc-air battery systems are considered attractive power storage technologies due to their notable theoretical energy output and low production cost. However, the slow kinetics of the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) limits their progress toward broad commercialization. To overcome this bottleneck, we propose a novel synthetic route employing a combined microwave-ultrasound-assisted polyol reduction method, yielding a uniformly dispersed PtCo/C-MU catalyst with an average nanoparticle diameter of 3.02 nm. The synergistic integration of uniform heating afforded by microwaves and cavitation effects induced by ultrasound facilitates highly efficient co-reduction of Pt and Co precursors, driving their nucleation and growth in the polyol medium. Electrochemical evaluations demonstrate that the PtCo/C-MU catalyst delivers significantly enhanced ORR catalytic performance and superior stability in contrast to the commercial Pt/C benchmark. Notably, when integrated into zinc-air battery systems, PtCo/C-MU delivers a peak power density of 238.10 mW cm −2 and maintains operation exceeding 200 h. This readily scalable microwave-ultrasound-assisted polyol technique enables a promising route toward high-performance, economically viable catalysts. Graphical abstract

The hydrogenation of CO 2 into high-value-added chemicals represents one of the most effective strategies for mitigating the greenhouse effect and addressing the energy crisis. In this study, the incorporation of Pt into Co-based catalysts is utilized to modulate the CO competitive adsorption capacity and reaction pathways, thereby significantly enhances the C–C coupling and the selectivity of C 2+ hydrocarbons during CO 2 hydrogenation. The formation of PtCo alloy in the catalysts is confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in-situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy analyses. The study reveals that the presence of PtCo alloy alters the competitive adsorption behavior of CO and CO 2 on the catalyst, and enables CO to replace CO 2 as the strongly adsorbed species on the catalyst. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the PtCo alloy exhibits enhanced CO adsorption energy and reduced formation energy barrier for formate compared with pure Co. This is responsible for the emergence of an additional formate pathway on the PtCo catalyst. Consequently, the 2%PtCo catalyst achieves a C 2+ selectivity of 18.5% under conditions of 350 °C and 3 MPa, markedly higher than the 1.9% over the pure Co catalyst. PtCo catalysts possesses 83.6 mmol·g –1 ·h –1 C 2+ yield, outperforming the Fe-based reference catalyst by a factor of 4. The study presents a novel catalyst design concept for increasing C 2+ selectivity through regulating the competitive adsorption between intermediate and reactant.

It is crucial to develop efficient, highly durable platinum-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts to advance fuel cell development. In this study, a series of N-doped graphene-like carbon (NGC) materials was synthesized by pyrolyzing a mixture of glucose and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), with g-C 3 N 4 acting as both a structural template and a nitrogen source. An NGC material containing approximately 6.9% N was obtained at a mass ratio of 4:1 for g-C 3 N 4 to glucose and a pyrolysis temperature of 900 °C. PtCo alloy nanoparticles were homogeneously anchored onto NGC via an impregnation-ethylene glycol reduction method. A core-shell structured catalyst consisting of a Pt shell surrounding a PtCo alloy core was subsequently fabricated by annealing the PtCo/NGC composite at 700 °C. The resulting Pt@PtCo/NGC catalyst exhibits superior ORR activity, with mass activity 3.22 and 3.25 times higher than that of a commercial Pt/C catalyst under acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the ORR mechanism was systematically investigated through combined material characterization, electrochemical analysis, and DFT calculations, providing deeper insight into the electrocatalytic structure-activity relationship.
