Designing highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) plays a decisive role in the commercialization of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Compared with commercial Pt/C catalysts, fine-tuning the electronic structure of electrocatalysts to reduce the adsorption energy of CO while at the same time increasing the adsorption energy of OH is beneficial to improving the activity of MOR. Herein, ultrastable self-supported PtCu nanowires (NWs) with abundant Cu-vacancies have been developed, wherein the CO adsorption energy is weakened by doping of Cu elements and the OH adsorption energy is strengthened by the vacancy defect through dealloying. The well-designed PtCu NWs exhibit an outstanding performance for the MOR, with a specific activity 7.5 times higher than that for the commercial Pt/C catalyst, which transcends most electrocatalysts’ performance currently. Moreover, the stability of PtCu electrocatalysts is greatly improved over 1 h owing to a “non-CO” pathway for MOR. Further DMFC tests present a 2 times higher power density than that of commercial Pt/C, and the PtCu integrated DMFC also presents a higher stability for 24 h, transcending most Pt-based anode catalysts of DMFCs.

Pb incorporation creates strained, dislocation-rich PtCu nanowires. • Oversized Pb atoms couple lattice strain with electronic modulation. • Pb-PtCu NWs deliver 0.932 V E 1/2 and 1.042 A mg Pt −1 MA. • Pb-PtCu NWs show only 10 mV E 1/2 loss after 10,000 cycles. • Strain-dislocation coupling enables durable acidic ORR catalysis. Strain and defect engineering offer powerful routes to improve Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts, but constructing stable high-energy defects under harsh electrochemical conditions remains challenging. Herein, we report a Pb-induced dislocation engineering strategy to develop highly strained PtCu nanowires (NWs) for efficient and durable ORR catalysis. Owing to the large atomic-size mismatch between Pb and the PtCu lattice, oversized Pb atoms disrupt lattice periodicity and generate abundant lattice distortion, dislocation defects, and heterogeneous strain fields within the nanowire framework. Structural and spectroscopic analyses reveal that Pb incorporation not only stabilizes the defect-rich strained structure but also modulates the electronic structure of Pt sites, downshifting the d-band center and weakening the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates. Consequently, the Pb-PtCu NWs deliver excellent ORR activity in acidic media, with a half-wave potential of 0.932 V and a mass activity of 1.042 A mg Pt −1 at 0.9 V, 9.1 times that of commercial Pt/C. Moreover, they exhibit outstanding durability, showing only a 10 mV half-wave potential loss after 10, 000 cycles. This work provides an effective design principle for creating defect-rich Pt-based catalysts through the introduction of oversized main-group metals. Oversized Pb atoms are incorporated into PtCu nanowires to induce strong lattice distortion, dislocation defects, and heterogeneous strain fields. The resulting strain-dislocation coupling stabilizes defect-rich PtCu nanowires and modulates the electronic structure of Pt sites, weakening oxygen-intermediate adsorption and enabling efficient and durable oxygen reduction in acidic media. Pt Cu dual single-atom catalysts were developed for artificial photosynthesis of CH 3 OH. • Dual sites synergy: Cu promotes CO 2 activation and *CHO formation; Pt accelerates H 2 O dissociation for proton supply. • Pt Cu dual sites synergistically enhance electron transport dynamics and photogenerated carrier separation efficiency. • PtCu-DA/BOBC achieves 16.21 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 CH 3 OH yield with 96.3% electron selectivity. The rational design of photocatalysts with spatially separated dual active sites is a promising strategy to overcome the efficiency bottlenecks of artificial photosynthesis, but it remains a significant challenge. Herein, we design a dual-active site constructed from the Cu atom and Pt atom decorated on the facet junction of BiOBr 1-x Cl x (BOBC) nanosheets. This design leverages the inherently high atomic utilization and the distinct synergistic effect of PtCu dual single-atom (PtCu-DA) sites, where the Cu atoms serve as the primary sites for CO 2 adsorption and activation, while the adjacent Pt atoms function as catalytic centers for H 2 O dissociation, ensuring a steady proton supply for subsequent hydrogenation steps. Benefiting from this spatial division of labor, the optimal PtCu-DA/BOBC possesses a promising catalytic performance for CO 2 photoreduction to CH 3 OH (16.21 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) with 96.3% electron selectivity, significantly outperforming its single-atom photocatalysts. Mechanistic studies reveal that the synergistic interaction between Pt and Cu not only enhances the charge carrier dynamics but also lowers the energy barriers for both CO 2 activation and H 2 O dissociation. This work provides deep insights into the atomic-level engineering of material interfaces for efficient solar fuel production. Precisely tailoring catalytic sites is essential for addressing the inherently slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), a major bottleneck in the efficiency of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this work, we present a straightforward one-step self-assembly method for fabricating PtCu nanocrystals (PtCu NCs) with a hierarchical nanodendritic architecture. This 3D structure integrates high-index facets and lattice strain to optimize catalytic performance. The incorporation of Cu into the Pt lattice induces compressive strain, which modulates the electronic structure and weakens the binding of oxygen intermediates. Simultaneously, selective surfactant adsorption suppresses the growth of low-index planes, promoting the formation of catalytically favorable steps and kinks. As a result, the PtCu NCs achieve a mass activity of 1.125 A mgPt −1 and a specific activity of 1.120 mA cm −2 at 0.90 V vs. RHE, corresponding to enhancements of 12.23 and 6.29 times, respectively, compared to those of conventional Pt/C catalysts. After durability tests, the PtCu NCs retain 89.9% of their initial mass activity after 10,000 cycles, compared to only 48.9% for Pt/C. These results highlight the power of compositional and morphological control in advancing ORR electrocatalysts and offer a scalable route toward high-performance PEMFC technologies.

Poor conductivity and insufficient structural stability of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) restrict their use in detecting water pollutants. In this work, a PtCu hydrogel was synthesized to support the Cu-BTC MOF (PtCu@Cu-BTC) by coordinating 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) directly on the surface of the PtCu hydrogel for the sensitive detection of o-sec-butylphenol (osBP). Importantly, the three-dimensional network structure of the PtCu hydrogel serves as a stable scaffold, providing a matrix to load metal ions that chelate with BTC. This approach not only enhances the structural stability of the MOFs but also greatly improves their electrical conductivity, allowing the catalyst to maintain consistent catalytic activity and stability during water pollutant detection. Additionally, the in situ formed Cu-BTC coordination layer increases the specific surface area, creating numerous active sites, and offers functional groups that promote pollutant adsorption, thereby significantly boosting sensor performance. The findings show that the developed biosensor has a strong linear response to osBP concentrations ranging from 3 to 100 μM, with a low detection limit of 0.68 μM. This work offers new insights for designing MOF-based functional materials that combine excellent conductivity with robust structural stability.

The synthesis of surface composition-tunable Pt-based octahedral nanoalloys is key to unravel the structure-property relationship in fuel cells. Herein, we report a facile route to prepare composition-tunable PtCu octahedral nanoalloys by using halogen ions (Br - or/and I - ) as composition modulators. Among these PtCu octahedral nanoalloys, Pt 59 Cu 41 octahedron exhibits the highest catalytic activity and durability in alkaline solution. The specific activity/mass activity of Pt 59 Cu 41 octahedron is 20.25 mA cm -2 /3.24 A mg -1 Pt , which is 6.64/5.3 times higher than commercial Pt black in 0.5 mol L -1 CH 3 OH, respectively. In the case of using ethanol (0.5 mol L -1 ) as fuel source, Pt 59 Cu 41 octahedron shows much better catalytic activity, that is 34.84 mA cm -2 /5.58 A mg -1 Pt for specific activity/mass activity, which is 9.16/7.34 times higher than commercial Pt black, respectively. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is employed to detect the intermediate species and products for methanol/ethanol oxidation reaction and a plausible mechanism is proposed to explain the improved activity and durability of Pt 59 Cu 41 octahedron toward methanol/ethanol oxidation in alkaline medium.

Pt-M alloy nanoparticles (NPs) with well-defined size and compositions exhibit dramatically catalytic performance in chemical reactions. In this work, monodisperse PtCu NPs with controlled size and compositions were synthesized by the co-reduction method in the presence of oleylamine. These NPs have excellent catalytic activities in the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (AB) and their activities were composition dependent. Among the different-composition PtCu NPs, the Cu 50 Pt 50 NPs exhibit the highest catalytic activity with an initial turnover frequency of 102.5 mol (hydrogen) ·mol (catalyst) −1 ·min −1 and an apparent activation energy of 36 kJ·mol −1 , which demonstrate the validity of partly replacing Pt by a first-row transition metal on constructing high performance heterogeneous nanocatalysts for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of AB.

Developing highly efficient and stable platinum-based electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical to expediting commercialization of fuel cells. Herein, several PtCu alloy nanocatalysts supported on N, P co-doped carbon (PtCu/NPC) were prepared by microbial-sorption and carbonization-reduction. Among them, PtCu/NPC-700 °C exhibits excellent catalytic performance for ORR with a mass activity of 0.895 A mg Pt −1 (@0.9 V) which is 8.29 folds of commercial Pt/C. Additionally, the ECSA and MA of PtCu/NPC-700 °C only decrease by 14.2% and 18.7% respectively, while Pt/C decreases by 35.2% and 52.8% after 10,000 cycles of ADT test. Moreover, the PtCu/NPC-700 °C catalyst emanates a maximum power density of 715 mW cm −2 and only 11.1% loss of maximum power density after 10,000 ADTs in single-cell test, indicating PtCu/NPC-700 °C also manifests higher activity and durability in actual single-cell operation than Pt/C. This research provides an easy and novel strategy for developing highly active and durable Pt-based alloy catalyst.

A nanozyme-amplified immunoassay was developed for Helicobacter pylori detection. • Avian-derived IgY and scFv enabled a dual-recognition sandwich format. • Porous PtCu nanozymes provided stable colorimetric signal amplification. • The assay achieved an LOD of 1.91 × 10 3 CFU/mL with good selectivity. • The method supports sensitive screening in matrix-rich samples. Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) is a major gastric pathogen associated with chronic gastrointestinal diseases, creating a need for simple and reliable analytical methods for its detection, particularly in complex sample matrices. Herein, we developed a nanozyme-amplified colorimetric sandwich immunoassay by integrating a unified avian-derived dual-recognition format with porous PtCu nanozyme-based catalytic signal amplification. Egg yolk-derived immunoglobulin yolk (IgY) was used as the capture antibody, while a phage display-derived single-chain variable fragment (scFv) selected after chicken immunization and biopanning was assembled onto porous PtCu nanomicrobeads (PtCu NPMs) as the catalytic detection probe. This design combines complementary IgY/scFv recognition with the catalytic robustness of porous PtCu nanozyme for sensitive H. pylori detection. Under optimized conditions, the assay achieved a limit of detection of 1.91 × 10 3 CFU/mL and showed good selectivity toward H. pylori . The method was further evaluated in saliva, milk, water, and vegetable juice samples, where satisfactory recoveries were obtained at moderate-to-high spiking levels. These results indicate that the proposed assay is suitable for sensitive screening and semi-quantitative analysis of H. pylori in complex matrices, and provides a practical strategy for combining avian-derived recognition reagents with nanozyme-based signal amplification in pathogen detection. Scheme 1 . Schematic illustration of the PtCu NPMs@scFv-based nanozyme-amplified sandwich immunoassay for H. pylori detection. (A) Selection of avian-derived scFv against H. pylori by hen immunization and phage display. (B) Construction of the PtCu NPMs@scFv probe through electrostatic assembly on PtCu NPMs. (C) Proposed detection mechanism: egg-yolk-derived IgY captures H. pylori on the solid phase, scFv recognizes cell-surface antigenic determinants of H. pylori , and the resulting IgY H. pylori -PtCu NPMs@scFv sandwich complex enriches porous PtCu nanozyme at the interface, thereby catalyzing the TMB/H 2 O 2 reaction to generate an amplified colorimetric signal. In this work, we utilized a facile air oxidative dealloying approach to synthesize PtCu hierarchical branched nanodendrites (HBNDs). The systematical investigation on the morphology, composition, and structure of PtCu HBNDs by various techniques demonstrates they are three-dimensional open porous nanostructures. The PtCu HBNDs show composition-dependent catalysis in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The Pt 1 Cu 1.03 -D with average size about 40 nm composed of integrated ultrathin branches, presents the highest HER activity with only 20 mV overpotential to achieve 10 mA/cm 2 , 19.34 A/mg Pt and 9.64 mA/cm 2 in mass and specific activity at −0.2 V, and excellent durability. The superior HER activity is attributed to the unique porous dendritic structure and electronic synergistic interactions between Pt and Cu as indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation. This work opens up a new facile route to design large accessible surface and high-performance electrocatalysts with low utilization of Pt for electrochemical energy conversion.

Pt-based core–shell electrocatalysts with one-dimensional (1D) nanostructure show a great opportunity to improve the catalytic activity and durability of pure Pt catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, we synthesize Cu@CuPt core@shell nanowires (NWs) with 1D nanostructure by using Cu NWs as templates in organic solvent medium . The ORR mass activity and specific activity of PtCu NWs are 0.216 A mg pt −1 and 0.404 mA cm −2 at 0.9 V, respectively, which are 3.1 and 3.7 times larger than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst (0.07 A mg pt −1 and 0.110 mA cm −2 , respectively). Theoretical studies suggest that the electronic effect of the Cu substrate on the Pt monolayer could be the main reason for the higher activity of PtCu NWs than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. In addition, the PtCu NWs show much better durability than the commercial Pt/C catalyst after stability test. It is expected that the as-synthesized PtCu NWs in organic solvent medium could be excellent candidates as high performance catalysts for ORR.

A comprehensive understanding of the intricate surface environments of practical nanocatalysts at the atomic level is essential for advancing our knowledge of catalytic mechanisms. In this study, we investigate PtCu octahedral nanoparticles with varying microstrains engineered by Cu dispersion. A detailed analysis of the atom configuration and corresponding microstrain is conducted. The intimate mixing of Cu and Pt results in increased randomness in atom displacement within the lattice and a more pronounced distribution of alternating microstrain on the surfaces. Specifically, we observe that the PtCu concave octahedral nanoparticles with alternating microstrain demonstrate a substantial oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of 3.95 mA cm–2 in area-specific activity. The significant impact of shear microstrain is further underscored, as evidenced by an 86.9% decrease in the ORR activity upon the removal of the alternating shear microstrain. This study sheds light on the effects of microstrain toward the ORR and provides valuable insights into designing advanced Pt-based electrocatalysts.
