We report a green approach of preparing cationic surfactant with starch. • None of any organic solvent is used during the whole procedure. • The cationic surfactant differs entirely with conventional one in structure. Renewable carbohydrates provided abundant resources for the preparation of carbon dots (CDs), which could serve as a starting material for synthesis of fine chemicals. In this work, soluble starch was first formulated into an aqueous dispersion and then converted into starch-derived CDs (designated as SCDs) via hydrothermal treatment. Subsequently, SCDs were facilely and efficiently modified with n -dodecylamine in an aqueous medium (the modified product was denoted as SCDs-C12). Experimental results demonstrated that a dilute solution of SCDs-C12 reduced the surface tension of water from 72.0 to 31.9 mN·m −1 (25 °C), and its surface activity was comparable to that of some novel gemini surfactants. Additionally, the positively charged SCDs-C12 exhibited excellent performance in inhibiting the growth of E. coli , with a minimum inhibitory concentration of only 0.05 mg·mL −1 , outperforming many previously reported CD-based materials. In summary, this work developed an environmentally friendly and green strategy for the fabrication of multifunctional cationic surfactants. The enzymatic antioxidant system (EAS) protects aerobic cells from oxidative stress. However, it is brittle and susceptible of inactivation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) immoderate production. Here, we demonstrated that MoS2 nanosheets (few-layer MoS2), as a multifunctional nanozyme, possess intrinsic activity of mimicking enzymes of superoxide dismutases (SODs), catalases (CATs), and peroxidases (PODs) under physiological conditions (pH 7.4, 25 °C). Further, MoS2 nanosheets showed POD-like activity by transferring electrons instead of generating ROS. Similar to EAS, a defense termed nanozymatic antioxidant system (NAS) was developed by MoS2 nanosheets, for regulation of oxidative stress. Surprisingly, this NAS can effectively scavenge other free radicals including hydroxyl radicals (•OH), nitrogen-centered free radicals (•DPPH), and nitric oxide (•NO). To evaluate these unique properties of MoS2-based NAS in vivo, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and A549 cell models were established, respectively. These results showed MoS2 nanosheets superiorly protect bacteria and cells against oxidative injury caused by H2O2. This work makes MoS2 nanosheets promising antioxidants in the pathological processes and expands their application in biocatalysis and nano-biomedicine.

Developing plant oil-based waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) materials with both antibacterial and antifouling properties remains a great challenge. In this study, a range of amphiphilic soybean oil-based polyols were successfully synthesized by grafting poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (mPEG) onto the long fatty acid chains of epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) through a ring-opening reaction. Subsequently, the obtained polyols were utilized to prepare cationic WBPU dispersions. The results demonstrated that the biobased WBPU dispersions prepared from amphiphilic soybean oil-based polyols exhibited excellent stability compared to those prepared from traditional hydrophobic soybean oil-based polyols. In addition, the introduction of mPEG side chains enhanced the phase mixing of the soft segments in the WBPU network, resulting in a remarkable increase in the elongation at the break of the resulting WBPU films, which reached up to 745%. Furthermore, the soybean oil-based WBPU films containing mPEG side chains exhibited enhanced antibacterial and antifouling properties. Specifically, the amount of protein adhesion in the resulting WBPU films could be reduced by approximately 60%. The antibacterial rate against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was increased from 79.4% to 91.8%, while the rate against Escherichia coli (E. coli) increased from 78.2% to 92.3%. The resulting plant oil-based WBPU, with its excellent antibacterial and antifouling properties, holds promise for various medical and healthcare applications, including antibacterial wound dressings.

Bacterial infection and the resulting inflammation response not only affect the functions of osteogenic-relative cells but also lead to the failure of titanium (Ti)-based implantation. It is urgent to develop multifunctional (antimicrobial, anti-inflammation, and pre-osteogenesis) titanium implants to address this tissue. Herein, an osteogenic growth peptide (OGP) loaded zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-67 (ZIF-67) coating was fabricated on titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNTs) to prepare a [email protected] surface. The [email protected] coating was rapidly dissolved under an acidic environment with pH-sensitive property. Moreover, the [email protected] displayed a strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ), Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), Streptococcus mutans ( S. mutans ), and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA ) owing to the hydrolysis of ZIF-67 nanoparticles and the formation of an alkaline microenvironment. The implants had good biocompatibility toward mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and macrophages. Notably, the [email protected] could suppress the inflammatory response and simultaneously improve the cellular differentiation of MSCs under an inflammatory environment. In vivo study further revealed that [email protected] implants presented strong antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties at the early stage of implantation, thereby enhancing the osteointegration of bone-implant at the late stage. Thus, this multifunctional Ti implant combining osteoimmunomodulatory and antibacterial effects is a promising candidate for implant-associated infectious bone regeneration.

In this paper, a kind of superabsorbent resin (SAR) with superior quality for hygiene products was developed using Fructus Aurantii Immaturus pectin (FAIP) from Citrus aurantium L.. FAIP-g-AM/AMPS SAR was established by free radical graft co -polymerization with FAIP as skeleton structure, N, N′-Methylene-bis (acrylamide) (MBA) as the cross-linker. Meanwhile, the functional monomers of acrylamide (AM) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) were introduced. The structure and morphology of FAIP-g-AM/AMPS were characterized by FTIR , 13 C NMR, XRD, SEM and TG-DSC analysis. The results confirmed that the AFIP-g-AM/AMPS SAR was successfully prepared, which exhibited a three-dimensional (3D) network structure and an excellent thermal stability . The absorption and retention capacity of FAIP-g-AM/AMPS was comparable to or even better than commercial diapers and sanitary napkins. Significantly, FAIP-g-AM/AMPS itself exhibited excellent antibacterial and safety. FAIP-g-AM/AMPS has an inhibition ratio of 97.1 % for Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and 98.5 % for Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), and was non-irritating and non-allergic to the skin. In addition, FAIP-g-AM/AMPS presented amazing biodegradability and a weight loss reached 37.1 % after 30 days by soil burial test. The research provides a safe and high-performance SAR, which expected to be used in hygiene products such as baby diapers, adult incontinence pads and sanitary napkins.
