A ternary nanocomposite containing ZnO, ZnS and MoS2 (ZnMoNCs) has been firstly synthesized by Keggin-type polyoxomolybdate and ZIF-8 as starting materials to provide Mo and Zn sources simultaneously. As compared to the mono- or bi-component complex, ZnMoNCs present more sensitive and stable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity. When rhodamine 6G is used as a probing molecule, the detection limit of 10−9 mol L−1 can be achieved on the ZnMoNC substrate with the enhancement factor (EF) of 1.4 × 108, which is the highest sensitivity among the known semiconductor SERS substrates. The increased adsorption sites and the synergistically improved charge transfer are conducive to the large enhancement of the SERS activity. It was also proved that the ZnMoNC substrate possesses high stability and self-cleaning properties, and can be reused in SERS detection without losing its activity even after 5 cycles. This work paves a new way to the design of new semiconductor SERS substrates by the utility of a multicomponent complex.

This paper reports accurate synthesis of a new type of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate based on gold nanoparticles decorated 201 red silanized diatomaceous supports. The developed SERS substrate is easy to fabricate, cost effective and offers sensitive rapid detection. The performance and stability of the SERS substrate was investigated and the results showed good SERS activity of substrate that can last for more than 6 months. Tiazophos and phosmet pesticides in aqueous solutions can be detected clearly at a low concentration of 0.01 mg/L. The new substrate was applied to detect triazophos in apple pulp at 0.2 mg/kg. The results indicate that this substrate have good potential in rapid monitoring of pesticide residues in fruits and could be suitable for field-based applications, and routine laboratory analysis of chemicals.

In this paper, we propose a facile and cost-effective electrospinning technique to fabricate surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, which is appropriate for multiple analytes detection. First of all, HAuCl4∙3H2O was added into the TEOS/PVP precursor solution, and flexible SiO2nanofibers incorporated with gold nanoparticles (SiO2@Au) were prepared by electrospinning and calcination. Subsequently, the nanofibrous membranes were immersed in the tannic acid and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane solution for surface modification through Michael addition reaction. Finally, the composite nanofibers (Ag@T-A@SiO2@Au) were obtained by the in-situ growth of Ag nanoparticles on the surfaces of nanofibers with tannic acid as a reducing agent. Due to the synergistic enhancement of Au and Ag nanoparticles, the flexible and self-supporting composite nanofibrous membranes have excellent SERS properties. Serving as SERS substrates, they are extremely sensitive to the detection of 4-mercaptophenol and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, with an enhancement factor of 108. Moreover, they could be utilized to detect analytes such as pesticide thiram at a low concentration of 10−8mol/L, and the substrates retain excellent Raman signals stability during the durability test of 60 days. Furthermore, the as-fabricated substrates, as a versatile SERS platform, could be used to detect bacteria ofStaphylococcus aureuswithout a specific and complicated bacteria-aptamer conjugation procedure, and the detection limit is up to 103colony forming units/mL. Meanwhile, the substrates also show an excellent repeatability of SERS response forS. aureusorganelles. Briefly, the prime novelty of this work is the fabrication of Au/Ag bimetallic synergetic enhancement substrates as SERS platform for versatile detection with high sensitivity and stability.Keywords:Ag/Au nanoparticles;synergetic enhancement;electrospun nanofibers;SERS substrates;versatile detection

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has attracted a great deal of interest during the past four decades and emerged as an ultrasensitive optical technique for chemical and biomedical analysis. It is widely accepted that the facile fabrication of SERS substrates with high activity and good reproducibility is of crucial importance for their applications. Herein, we report on a fast and robust method for the synthesis and immobilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (POEGMA) brushes under mild conditions without using any reducing agents. POEGMA brushes of different chain lengths were synthesized directly on silicon wafers by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization with various reaction time. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscope measurements indicated that the AgNPs were firmly and homogeneously embedded into POEGMA brushes. The resulting POEGMA–AgNP hybrid films were employed as SERS substrates for the detection of 4-aminothiophenol, giving rise to an enhancement factor of up to 1.9 × 10 6 . The influence of the POEGMA's chain length on SERS performance was also investigated. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper, a superhydrophobic Ag–Cu composite metal film was fabricated as surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate. Ag–Cu composite metal film was prepared from galvanic displacement on commercial copper foil. The prepared silver films were modified by PFDT to create a stable superhydrophobic SERS platform. Superhydrophobic substrates were characterized by a variety of characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis, XPS and Raman spectra. The superhydrophobic substrate could enrich probing molecules with the volatilization of solvent. Mathematical model was presented and applied to investigate concentration factor of hydrophobic substrate. The measurements were in good agreement with the calculation results. The superhydrophobic Ag–Cu composite metal film can reduce the detection limits and provide a new way to prepare efficient SERS substrates for ultra-low concentration detection.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an important sustainable technique because of its ability to detect trace-level analytes including pesticides, heavy metals, explosives, proteins, pathogens, and other chemical and biological contaminants. In this paper, we report a facile approach to highly sensitive SERS substrates by combining hierarchically patterned micro- and nanostructures with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) adsorbed on poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) surface. The patterned structures were fabricated using breath figures as dynamic templates in which polar block enriches at the rim of the pores. This characteristic of the breath figure method makes it possible to employ a simple coating technique to construct substrates decorated with Ag NPs, which have a diameter mostly ranging from 18 to 30 nm. Results indicate that the hierarchically ordered substrates show enhancement factors as high as 4 × 108. It is also found that the enhancement factors are concentration-dependent, relying on the ratio of the number of analytes to Ag NPs. Moreover, the prominent enhancement at Raman shift of ∼614 cm–1 has been observed, which will be useful in the detection of analytes such as some kinds of pesticides and viruses with characteristic peaks in this Raman shift range (e.g., adenovirus). This proposed approach provides an effective, reproducible, electroless, and facile method for preparing high-quality SERS substrates.

Recyclable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates are beneficial to cost reduction and environmental protection and have always been a research topic with great interest. Herein, a core–shell-satellite structured SERS substrate Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe)@Ag nanoparticles (FMAs) was developed, possessing versatile functionalities of adsorption, detection, degradation and recovery. Results showed that the MIL-100(Fe) with peroxidase-like activity as shell catalyzed H 2 O 2 to generate ·OH degraded pollutants within 5 min to achieve substrate cleaning, making FMAs recyclable for at least 5 times to sequentially detect different cationic dyes with high sensitivity, having low detection limits as low as 15.24 ng/L, 387.87 ng/L and 0.71 ng/g for crystal violet in deionized water, aquaculture water and tilapia, respectively. FMAs also showed good uniformity, reproducibility and stability, with a relative standard deviation value of 5.58 % between substrates and about 78.60 % SERS activity remained after 20 d storage at 4 °C. This FMAs substrate thus has great potential for selective detection of trace cationic dyes in food or other fields.

The field of semiconductor surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates has experienced significant advancements, leading to a wide range of applications in several fields. However, the quest for new ultra-sensitive semiconductor SERS materials is still of utmost importance. In this regard, an efficient and novel substrate, F 4 TCNQ/MoS 2 heterostructure is introduced, assisted by V-shaped aluminum anodic oxide (AAO) nanocavities with different depths. Utilizing the efficient charge transfer of organic/inorganic semiconducting heterostructure and the photoconfinement capability of the nanocavity structure of the AAO nanotemplate, excellent stability, fast sensing, enhanced Raman, and photodegradation activities are achieved. Due to its unique 3D structure, the optimized F 4 TCNQ/MoS 2 /AAO with 1500 nm depth achieves ultra-high sensitivity detection of 9.0×10 −16 M for conventional probe molecules. Furthermore, precise detection of water contaminants is observed for the first time with a V-shaped heterostructure due to combined organic/inorganic features that differ significantly from conventional MoS 2 structures or other metal/inorganic or inorganic/inorganic semiconductors. This research presents a novel and versatile strategy for SERS and demonstrates its diverse potential performance in practical applications.

A phenomenon known as plasmon resonance constitutes a unique optical effect that can induce an enhancement in localized electromagnetic fields, resulting in a substantial increase in the electromagnetic field intensity surrounding metallic nanostructures. In this work, the coupling effect of excitation of surface plasmon polaritons and local surface plasmons in nanoparticles is deeply studied under the background of nanoparticles/one-dimension grating composite structures through grating matching. By employing finite-difference time-domain simulations as our methodological approach, we discern gratings with a periodicity of 1.5 μm support surface plasmon bound states between the gratings. Furthermore, the modulation of SPs along the vertical sidewalls of the grating due to standing wave effects exhibits oscillatory behavior with varying grating heights. Experimental results obtained from the nanoparticle/grating composite SERS substrate validate theoretical predictions, demonstrating higher enhanced Raman signals at 633 nm compared to 532 nm. Remarkably, this structure exhibits good performance, with R6G detection sensitivity down to concentrations as low as 10−10 M and mapping achieving a relative standard deviation of 7.79%, underscoring its uniformity and capability of electromagnetic field enhancement.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has recently received considerable attention as an ultrasensitive analytic technique. However, its wide application is limited by lack of excellent SERS-active substrates. In this work a SERS substrate with arrayed monolayer films of porous gold nanoparticles is prepared on a solid substrate by a facile, in situ and one-step growth approach. Specifically, the solid substrate was coated with a layer of dense positive charges first by layer-by-layer assembly, followed by patterned a PDMS film with arrayed wells on the substrate. Then the growth solution including chlorauric acid, cetyltrimethylammonium chloride, and ascorbic acid in a certain proportion was transferred into the wells for in situ and one-step growth of porous gold nanoparticles on the substrate. The growth time, feed ratio of the reagents, and repeat times of the in situ growth were studied systematically to obtain optimal parameters for preparing an optimal SERS substrate. The as-prepared optimal SERS substrate not only has good SERS performance with the enhancement factor up to ∼1.10 × 106, but also shows good uniformity and stability. The SERS substrate was further utilized to be ultrasensitive SERS-based chemical sensors for ppb-level detection of highly toxic dyfonate. The preliminary result indicates that the as-prepared SERS substrate has good SERS performance and shows a number of great potential applications in SERS-based sensors.

Conventionally, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-active materials mainly include nanosized noble metals, semiconductors, or the complex of both, most of which are limited in practical applications because of their symbiotic materials, complex and difficult to control fabrication processes, and reuse and sampling challenges. To address these issues, novel SERS substrates have been developed in this study by anchoring zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) and derivatives of ZIF-67 to cotton fabric. The designed SERS substrates show extraordinary flexibility, an excellent enhancement factor, and reusable performance. By adjusting the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and highest occupied molecular orbital of ZIF-67 through a doping process with different metal ions, the substrates exhibit a high enhancement factor of 6.07 × 106 and a low limit of detection of 10–8 M, as well as reusability resulting from photocatalysis. The enhancement process is studied based on charge transfer resonance, interband transition resonance, ground state charge transfer, and the light coupling effect. The results contribute to the approaches in designing SERS substrates by using ZIFs as unique SERS-active materials, and provide new insights into the development of novel SERS-active materials, along with promoting the use of SERS detection in the real world by improving the flexibility of substrates.

The spectroscopy of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), with its high sensitivity and specific chemical fingerprinting, has received increasing attention. A stable substrate is extraordinarily important for the trace detection of the SERS technique, but the challenge of SERS substrate production with high stability and uniformity still imposes the unavoidable barriers. In this paper, we design a multilayer core–shell-nanostructured ZrO2@Ag@SiO2 nanoparticle through liquid extraction. First, we regulated the usage of AgNO3 (1 wt %) to obtain Ag@SiO2 which is silver coated with uniform distribution; on the surface of silica, the number of silver particles is abundant. Then, we discussed the influence when different concentrations of zirconium propoxide are added on the zirconia layer’s thickness. Then, we applied FDTD simulation to explain the position of SERS “hotpots” with and without ZrO2 coating. We have found that the detection capability of ZrO2@Ag@SiO2 can be up to 10–9 M for 4-ATP; with ZrO2@Ag@SiO2 SERS substrates exposed to the atmospheric environment for up to 30 days, we could still obtain the excellent SERS signal performance contributed by the good chemical stability of ZrO2, when ZrO2 is coated on the surface of Ag@SiO2, the zirconia layer formed has a protective role . These experimental results have indicated that the outer zirconia layer could prevent the silver surface from being oxidized, ensuring its stability , which is quite crucial for the applied SERS.
