2D Hybrid Nanomaterials for Selective Detection of NO2 and SO2 Using “Light On and Off” Strategy

Aimin Chen,Rui Liu,Xiao Peng,Qiaofen Chen,Jianmin Wu

In order to distinguish NO2 and SO2 gas with one sensor, we designed a paper chip assembled with a 2D g-C3N4/rGO stacking hybrid fabricated via a layer-by-layer self-assembly approach. The g-C3N4/rGO hybrid exhibited a remarkable photoelectric property due to the construction of a van der Waals heterostructure. For the first time, we have been able to selectively detect NO2 and SO2 gas using a “light on and off” strategy. Under the “light off” condition, the g-C3N4/rGO sensor exhibited a p-type semiconducting behavior with a low detection limit of 100 ppb of NO2, but with no response toward SO2. In contrast, the sensor showed n-type semiconducting behavior which could detect SO2 at concentration as low as 2 ppm under UV light irradiation. The effective electron transfer among the 2D structure of g-C3N4 and rGO nanosheets as well as highly porous structures could play an important role in gas sensing. The different sensing mechanisms at “light on and off” circumstances were also investigated in detail.

Catalytic oxidation of CO over Pt/TiO2 with low Pt loading: The effect of H2O and SO2

Chenglin Feng,Xiaolong Liu,Tingyu Zhu,Yutao Hu,Mengkui Tian

Anatase TiO 2 loaded with 0.1wt.% Pt catalyst (0.1Pt/TiO 2 -A) was prepared via the impregnation method, and its CO catalytic oxidation activity was investigated. Noteworthy, introduction of H 2 O into the reaction atmosphere apparently facilitated the catalytic oxidation of CO. Besides, introduction of SO 2 inhibited the catalytic oxidation of CO. In presence of H 2 O and SO 2 , 0.1Pt/TiO 2 -A showed outstanding catalytic stability, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric (TG) characterizations suggested that the amount of sulfate species deposited on the 0.1Pt/TiO 2 -A treated at 230 °C did not increase with time extension, which might be an important reason for the high sulfur resistance of 0.1Pt/TiO 2 -A. XPS results also demonstrated that the dissociation of H 2 O led to considerably increase of hydroxyl groups over the catalyst surface. H 2 18 O isotope-labeling experiments unambiguously showed that C 16 O 18 O was the main product accounting for 88.9%, revealing that the other oxygen atom in the product CO 2 was mostly from H 2 O. Consequently, based on previous researches and our experimental results, the mechanism of H 2 O promoting CO oxidation on 0.1Pt/TiO 2 -A catalyst was proposed.

Unveiling the significant promoting effect of SO2 on Ir/SiO2 catalyst for the CO-SCR of NOx in the presence of O2

Ruoyuan Li,Aixia Li,Junhua Li,Yao Wang,Zhiming Liu

Selective catalytic reduction of NO x by CO (CO-SCR) in the presence of O 2 is challenging because in this process CO is prone to being oxidized by O 2 , thus inhibiting NO x reduction by CO. Furthermore, SO 2 typically leads to the deactivation of the CO-SCR catalyst. Herein, a significant promoting effect of SO 2 on Ir/SiO 2 catalyst for the CO-SCR of NO x in the presence of O 2 is reported. In-situ X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that SO 2 does not affect the chemical nature of Ir 0 under reaction conditions. However, SO 2 can be oxidized to sulfate and deposit on the catalyst surface. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analysis demonstrated that the presence of SO 2 can inhibit the CO + O 2 reaction, thus leaving more CO available to reduce NO x over the active Ir 0 sites. As a result, the reduction of NO x is remarkably promoted even in the presence of O 2 and SO 2 .

Promotion effect of Cr addition on the activity and SO2 tolerance of CeOx catalysts for the NH3-SCR at middle-low temperature

Longyi Xue,Ninghan Wei,Cheng Zhao,Xiaomei Hu,Junge Yun,Zimo Chen,Zhiyi Deng,Zhihang Chen

CeO 2 as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst has attracted wide attention due to its abundant surface acidity and excellent oxygen storage/release capacity. However, its further implication was hindered owing to insufficient catalytic activity and SO 2 resistance. Novel Cr doped CeO x catalysts were synthesized by solid phase method and used for NH 3 -SCR of NO x at middle-low temperature. The effect of Cr addition on the SCR performance and physicochemical properties of CeO 2 catalyst was investigated by activity test and characterizations. Among the tested catalysts, Cr(0.4)-CeO x catalyst exhibited excellent NO x removal efficiency, with >90% NO conversion within 180–300 °C, 100% NO conversion at 220 °C and outstanding SO 2 resistance at 240 °C under 100 or 600 ppm SO 2 . The characterizations results revealed that Cr modified CrCeO x catalyst could effectively increase BET surface area, pore volume, surface acidity and redox capacity. In situ DRIFTS indicated that SCR reactions over Cr(0.4)-CeO x catalyst followed Eley-Rideal mechanism and active –NH 2 was the major intermediate species. After sulfuration, Cr(0.4)-CeO x still exhibited excellent SCR activity due to the increase of Cr 6+ , Ce 3+ and O α concentration and the formation of Cr–O–Ce bond, new Brønsted acid site and more crystallized Cr 2 O 3 .

Simultaneous Removal of NO and SO2 from Exhaust Gas by Cyclic Scrubbing and Online Supplementing pH-Buffered NaClO2 Solution

Zhitao Han,Tian Lan,Zhiwei Han,Shaolong Yang,Jingming Dong,Deping Sun,Zhijun Yan,Xinxiang Pan,Liguo Song

Experiments were conducted to simultaneously remove NO and SO2 from simulated exhaust gas by cyclic scrubbing and online supplementing pH-buffered NaClO2 solutions in a bench-scale reactor. The effects of key operating parameters on pollutant removal performance had been investigated. The results suggested that an extremely high oxidant utilization rate could be obtained when the oxidant supplementing molar rate approached the oxidant consumption molar rate. Though co-existing SO2 in flue gas would consume a certain amount of the oxidant during the absorption process, the intermediate products of SO32– ions generated from SO2 hydrolysis might be in favor of NO2 absorption to some extent. The introduction of ethanol in scrubbing solution could enhance NOx removal performance largely, which was possibly because of its inhibition effect on SO32– oxidation. The reaction mechanism and reaction products in scrubbing solutions were also discussed roughly through theoretical calculations and ion chromatography analysis.

Promotion Effect of Chromium on the Activity and SO2 Resistance of CeO2–TiO2 Catalysts for the NH3-SCR Reaction

Wuyuan Liu,Zihan Gao,Xiangyun Zhao,Jiajian Gao,Runnong Yang,Lin Yu

The Cr-doped CeO2–TiO2 catalysts (CrCeTi) were produced via a coprecipitation method and used for selective catalytic reduction (SCR). The CrCeTi catalyst has good catalytic performance and sulfur resistance. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), NH3-TPD, NO-TPD, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) suggested that the CrCeTi catalyst with high specific surface area (SSA), strong surface acidity, enhanced redox properties, and effective electron transfer (3Ce4+ + Cr3+ ↔ 3Ce3+ + Cr6+) were the important promotion factors for excellent SCR properties. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) indicated that the incorporation of Cr could improve the adsorption capacity of nitrate and the activation capacity of NH3, which were conducive to enhancing the catalytic activity. The thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry (TG-MS) confirmed that the doping of Cr reduced SO2 surface adsorption and promoted the decomposition of NH4HSO4 (ABS). Therefore, the CrCeTi catalyst showed excellent resistance to SO2 poisoning.

A CuO/MoO3-based SO2 gas sensor with moisture resistance and ultra-fast response at 90°C

Hairui Fang,Hong Chen,Rong Tan,Lei Ge,Tingting Zhao,Haochen Wang,Shenglin Yuan,Dong Wang

Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) is a toxic and harmful decomposition product generated during arc discharge or partial discharge in sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) electrical equipment, which can corrode internal pipelines. Detecting SO 2 is crucial for assessing the insulation condition of equipment and preventing faults. To overcome the challenges faced by traditional SO 2 gas sensors, including high operating temperatures, slow response times, and poor moisture resistance, this paper proposes a novel SO 2 gas sensor based on CuO/MoO 3 . The morphology, composition, and chemical states of the materials were analyzed using different characterization techniques. At 90°C, the S2 sensor (CuO: MoO 3 =1: 1) exhibited a fast response time (10 s) to 10 ppm SO 2 and demonstrated good moisture resistance (a 1 % change in relative humidity (RH) has the same effect on the sensor as 25.9 ppb SO 2 ). The response of the S2 sensor to 100 ppm SO 2 was 26.5. Additionally, the voltage sensitivity of the S2 sensor at low (1–10 ppm) and high (10–100 ppm) concentrations are 658.74 mV/ppm and 33.43 mV/ppm, respectively. Therefore, the S2 sensor is more suitable for low concentration conditions. These good sensing characteristics of the S2 sensor are owing to the high content of oxygen vacancies (39.2 %) and the heterojunction effect in the composite material. Additionally, this sensor exhibits excellent anti-interference capabilities, including moisture resistance and high selectivity. Therefore, the CuO/MoO 3 -based SO 2 gas sensor can be effectively applied to detect the decomposition of SF 6 .

Unravelling the support-dependent active structures and SO2-tolerance of supported Pt catalysts to remediate toxic CO contaminant: An experimental and theoretical perspective

Xinyu Liu,Chengxiong Wang,Feng Feng,Yinglong Wu,Shiying Chang,Guangxin Liu,Dong Tian,Weinan Yang,Xianming Cheng,Dongxia Yang,Kongzhai Li,Yunkun Zhao

Catalyst deactivation caused by SO 2 poisoning generally hinders commercial viability of CO oxidation catalysts in the field of industrial flue gas purification. XPS results, CO-DRIFTS spectra and DFT calculations suggested that Pt was highly-dispersed and remained the oxidative states on SnO 2 support, resulting in that the rate-determining step of CO oxidation is to clean up the adsorbed CO and PtS 2 species is readily formed in a SO 2 -contained hydrothermal environment. It predominantly maintained metallic Pt 0 in the Pt/WO 3 catalyst, thereby led to cleaning up the activated oxygen atoms as the rate-determining step. It is very difficult to remove the sulfur species in SO 2 -poisoned catalysts within 600 °C and the mechanisms of CO oxidation are not affected by SO 2 poisoning for Pt/SnO 2 and Pt/WO 3 catalysts. These findings provide some significant insights to understand the mechanisms of CO oxidation and SO 2 -tolerance.

A systematic mathematical model to accurately predict SO2 absorption performance of binary mixture of alkanolamine and ionic liquid

Jielong Zhou,Bo Wang,Xiandong Hao,Zhiyong Xu,Wenbo Zhao

In the absorption of SO 2 , it is very important for industrial applications to set up mathematical models to describe the changes in physical–chemical properties and the absorption dynamic processes. However, most of the research only pays attention to the molecular structure of absorbent. Few works have investigated the mathematical models in the absorption processes. To make up for the research gap in this area, a binary absorbent composed of 2-(dibutylamino)ethanol (DBEA) and 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([Emim][TfO]) were developed for SO 2 capture in the present work. A systematic mathematical model was proposed to accurately predict the viscosity and density of the absorption system with different absorbent compositions, SO 2 absorption capacities, and temperatures. Additionally, the absorption kinetics and thermodynamics were analyzed across varying absorbent compositions and SO 2 -containing gas flows, enabling dynamic prediction of the absorption process. Furthermore, the correlation between desorption residuals and desorption temperature was investigated, along with an analysis of SO 2 /CO 2 selectivity and the cyclic SO 2 absorption performance. This work provides a robust framework for rational screening and design of alkanolamine-IL hybrid solvents, bridging the gap between experimentally empirical solvent development and theoretical prediction.

Preparation of highly active and SO2-resistant Cr-based non-carbon adsorbents via plasma for elemental mercury removal

Hui Wang,Xinyi Long,Xuyi Yang,Qiyin Huang,Zewen Chen,Shengji Wu,Jie Zhou

Coal-fired mercury pollution poses an escalating threat to the ecosystem and human health. In this study, we designed and prepared transition metal oxides (MO x ) supported non-carbon-based adsorbents for Hg 0 removal using non-thermal plasma, based on the mechanism of Hg 0 removal. Specifically, MO x supported SiO 2 adsorbents were examined to explore the correlation between their redox ability and Hg 0 removal. The plasma treatment process could enhance the catalytic oxidation activity of the MO x (oxygen activation center) and effectively enhance Hg 0 removal efficiency. The Hg 0 removal efficiencies of Co 3 O 4 /SiO 2 -P and CrO x /SiO 2 -P prepared by plasma could maintain above 95.0 % and 85.0 % in the whole test, whereas the Co 3 O 4 /SiO 2 and CrO x /SiO 2 adsorbents prepared by traditional incipient wetness impregnation method exhibited lower Hg 0 removal efficiencies of nearly 20–30 %. Furthermore, with the addition of SO 2 , the Hg 0 removal performance of Co 3 O 4 /SiO 2 -P decreased significantly, while the performance of CrO x /SiO 2 -P remained relatively unchanged. Characterization results containing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) showed that the oxygen activation centers on CrO x /SiO 2 -P exhibited excellent resistance to SO 2 and were less susceptible to SO 2 occupation than those on Co 3 O 4 /SiO 2 -P. The plasma-prepared CrO x /SiO 2 -P adsorbents demonstrate promising potential for industrial applications in Hg 0 removal.

Facile Preparation of Biomass-Derived Mesoporous Carbons for Highly Efficient and Selective SO2 Capture

Jinghan Zhang,Peixin Zhang,Minyu Li,Ziwei Shan,Jun Wang,Qiang Deng,Zheling Zeng,Shuguang Deng

The efficient elimination of SO2 from flue gases and natural gases is critical for energy utilization and environmental protection. However, selecting or preparing an efficient adsorbent with a high SO2 capacity, good selectivity, and excellent recyclability is very challenging, and the adsorption mechanism at an atomic level is still controversial. We report a facile one-step method for the synthesis of biomass-derived porous carbons with high specific surface areas (1195–1449 m2 g–1), mesoporous pore size (4–6 nm), and good SO2 adsorption properties. Our carbon adsorbents exhibited an outstanding SO2 adsorption capacity of 10.7 mmol g–1 at 298 K and 1.0 bar, which is more than twice the SO2 capacity of benchmark carbon material cs1000a (approximately 5.0 mmol g–1) and commercial ordered mesoporous carbon CKM-3 (5.1 mmol g–1). The new carbon adsorbents also showed unprecedented SO2/CO2, SO2/CH4, and SO2/N2 separation selectivities of 32, 127, and 2349, respectively, which are comparable with the best performance MOF adsorbents. Dynamic breakthrough experiments confirmed the feasibility of efficient removal of SO2 from flue gas in an adsorbent column. Even with the presence of water vapor, clear and efficient separation of SO2 could also be achieved with excellent recycling stability. In addition, a density function theory simulation further illustrates that −NOx and −OH groups in the carbon frameworks provide strong interactions with SO2 molecules. The carbon adsorbents synthesized in this work are promising for flue gas desulfurization and natural gas purification applications.

Pebax-based membrane filled with photo-responsive Azo@NH2-MIL-53 nanoparticles for efficient SO2/N2 separation

Qingping Xin,Shuo Li,Faxin Ma,Jianping Guo,Shaofei Wang,Guangyu Xuan,Xiaoli Ding,Lei Zhang,Yuzhong Zhang

The preparation of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) using metal–organic framework (MOF) as fillers is one of the simple and effective methods to improve the gas permeability and selectivity of membranes, and it has an attractive prospect to achieve controllable gas separation process. Herein, NH 2 -MIL-53 nanoparticles are synthesized by hydrothermal method and modified by aminoazobenzene (Azo) by decompression loading technology. The multifunctional Azo@NH 2 -MIL-53 nanoparticles are incorporated into the Pebax matrix to fabricate MMMs for efficient and controllable SO 2 separation. Pebax/Azo@NH 2 -MIL-53–20% membrane exhibits the maximum SO 2 permeability of 2570 Barrer with a SO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 717 and the separation process of SO 2 /N 2 has dynamic photo-responsive characteristics under different light conditions, which is attributed to the incorporation of the Azo@NH 2 -MIL-53. First, the NH 2 -MIL-53 nanoparticles with high specific surface area of 637 m 2 .g −1 and pore size of 1.50 nm are introduced into MMMs to construct rich SO 2 transport channels, increasing the diffusivity selectivity. Second, the inherent –NH 2 groups and introduced -N = N- groups in Azo@NH 2 -MIL-53 increase the affinity of SO 2 , enhancing the solubility selectivity. Third, by artificially changing the light conditions to accurately control the conformation of Azo and the pore structure of NH 2 -MIL-53 is changed, which significantly changes the SO 2 adsorption capacity of NH 2 -MIL-53. Due to light is available in abundance in the form of sunlight, the mixed matrix membrane coupled with photo-responsive MOF can achieve more efficient and energy-saving gas separation process.
