Improving the proton conductivity of high temperature proton exchange membrane (HTPEM) over low-medium relative humidity (RH) still remains a challenge. The poly(triazoles-phosphazenes) (PTPP) containing triazoles can function as basic sites and cross-linker. The hydroxyl-terminated SPEEK (SOPEEK) contains abundant –SO 3 H to be applied as proton conductor and bears cross-linking sites with PTPP. The PTPP-SOPEEK composite membranes are obtained by covalent cross-linking between PTPP and SOPEEK, which is expected to realize effective proton conduction. The prepared PTPP-SOPEEK membranes show good physical and chemical stability, dimensional stability, high proton conductivity over low-to-medium RH, and low fuel permeation. At 140 °C and 100% RH, the proton conductivity of PTPP(15)-SOPEEK can reach to 0.223 S cm −1 , while at 180 °C, the proton conductivity is 0.086 S cm −1 at 50% RH, 0.062 at 30% RH, and 0.045 S cm −1 at 0% RH, respectively. After washing with water for 96 h, the conductivity durability of PTPP(15)-SOPEEK shows almost no decay. The gas (H 2 & O 2 ) and liquid (methanol) fuel permeability coefficient of PTPP(15)-SOPEEK membranes is 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than the Nafion membrane. Therefore, the PTPP-SOPEEK membranes can act as promising alternatives for the application in HTPEM.

A novel proton exchange membrane which can be applied in the range of 25-140°C is prepared by incorporating phosphonic acid functionalized crosslinked siloxane in sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) matrix from amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP), epoxycyclohexylethyltrimethoxysilane (EHTMS), and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). EHTMS is introduced to chemically fix free ATMP as well as a cross-linker. And, the obtained membranes are immersed in deionized water to remove free ATMP. Fourier transform infrared and X-ray diffraction patterns suggest that ATMP is anchored into EHTMS and Si-O-Si network forms successfully. These membranes are thermally stable up to 220 °C and exhibit excellent dimensional stability and mechanical performance. The addition of ATMP not only increases the amount of proton transfer sites, but also provides proton transport units for membranes at elevated temperature and low relative humidity (RH) condition. The proton conductivity of AES-4 membrane reaches 0.114S cm -1 at 80 °C and 100%RH and 0.056 Scm -1 at 140 °C and 20%RH, respectively.

This study uses polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fiber paper as a skeletal support to fabricate a high-density, porous nonwoven support layer with excellent mechanical stability via wet papermaking. Sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) is then cast onto its surface to form a continuous proton-conducting phase. Building on this foundation, synergistic doping with sulfonated graphene oxide (S-GO) and amino-modified silica (NH 2 –SiO 2 ) constructs a topologically interconnected proton exchange membrane structure exhibiting acid-base synergistic effects. The sulfonic acid groups on the S-GO surface act as high-density proton donors, providing continuous proton conduction sites. Meanwhile, the basic amino groups in NH 2 –SiO 2 form stable acid-base interactions and hydrogen-bond networks with sulfonic acids, effectively anchoring proton migration pathways, reducing disordered swelling, and extending proton hopping distances. This topologically interconnected acid-base synergistic network significantly enhances proton transport dominated by the Grotthuss mechanism while effectively suppressing methanol permeation. Performance testing reveals that the composite membrane with optimized doping ratio achieves proton conductivity up to 0.2 S cm −1 at 80 °C, with methanol permeability significantly lower than commercial Nafion-117 membranes. In direct methanol fuel cell testing, the composite membrane exhibited an open-circuit voltage of approximately 770 mV and a peak power density approaching 170 mW cm −2 , while demonstrating excellent thermal stability, oxidation resistance, and mechanical strength. These results demonstrate that constructing a topologically interconnected structure with synergistic acid-base interactions can effectively balance proton conductivity and fuel barrier performance, providing a viable new strategy for developing high-performance, low-cost proton exchange membrane materials.

Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)-based proton exchange membranes have emerged as promising alternatives to Nafion for proton exchange membrane fuel cells; however, their long-term mechanical and chemical stabilities remain key challenges for practical applications. In this work, a series of SPEEK composite membranes were fabricated by incorporating inorganic proton conductors zirconium phosphate (ZrP) and layered double hydroxides (LDHs), a novel functional nanomaterial, into a SPEEK matrix with a degree of sulfonation (DS) of 63%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses confirmed the uniform dispersion of ZrP and LDHs within the polymer matrix and revealed the formation of continuous proton conduction pathways. The resulting composite membranes demonstrated enhanced mechanical strength and thermal stability. Swelling behavior and water uptake measurements showed that the incorporation of LDHs effectively suppressed dimensional changes in the membranes. Specifically, when the mass ratio of ZrP to LDHs was optimized at 8:2, the SPEEK-2 membrane exhibited a swelling degree of 15.7%, significantly lower than that of the pristine SPEEK membrane. Furthermore, under conditions of 80 °C and 100% relative humidity, the ionic conductivity of the SPEEK-2 membrane reached 217.9 mS cm − 1 , representing a 25.7% improvement over the unmodified membrane. These results demonstrate a viable strategy for enhancing the performance and durability of proton exchange membrane materials.

Development of novel proton exchange membrane (PEM) with the aim toward neat methanol operation of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has attracted increasing attention. Proton exchange membrane technology with remarkably low methanol permeability has been considered as one of the most facile ways to approach this target. Here, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membrane was modified by blending with superhydrophobic bromomethylated poly(phenylene oxide) (BPPO). The fabricated SPEEK/BPPO membranes possess obviously low methanol permeability, which is attributed to the formed interrupted methanol transport channels arising from the combined properties of the hydrophobic BPPO polymeric backbone, the formed spherical BPPO obstacles and the cross-linking networks derived from the Friedel-Craft reaction between bromobenzyl groups and nucleophilic phenyl rings. Therefore, the SPEEK/BPPO membrane DMFC demonstrates a much higher cell performance both at low methanol concentration and high methanol concentration than the Nafion 117 DMFC. In particular, the actual value of the maximum power density at high methanol concentration of 20 M suggests that the SPEEK/BPPO membranes can be considered as a desirable candidate for potential application in high methanol concentration DMFCs.

With the rapid development of 5 G technology, the heat dissipation of electronic devices has become an important challenge. It is particularly essential to construct efficient thermal transfer networks in order to obtain advanced materials with superior thermal conductivity as well as excellent electrical insulating properties. In this work, poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) was sulfonated to achieve its solubility for electrospinning. Multi-scale hybrid fillers containing hydroxylated boron nitride nanosheets (fBNNSs) and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNT) are aligned along the direction of sulfonated PEEK (SPEEK) fibers during electrospinning process where fMWCNT with high aspect ratio can be used as mediators to connect the dispersed fBNNSs resulting in synergistic effect to extensively improve the thermally conductive performance. The hydrogen bond interaction among sulfonic acid group, carboxy groups and hydroxy groups from the matrix and modified fillers can not only make the fillers disperse uniformly but also improve the interfacial properties, thus reducing the phonon scattering at the interface efficiently, to enhance the thermal conductivity significantly at relatively low filler loading. fBNNSs@fMWCNT/SPEEK composite exhibits excellent thermal conductivity (λ) of 5.25 W/(m·K) when the filler content reached by 26 wt% with the ratio of fBNNSs to fMWCNT of 25:1(wt:wt). Under the composition above, the excellent electrical insulating property (2.54×10 15 Ω·cm) is achieved as well. Furthermore, fBNNSs@fMWCNT/SPEEK fiber membrane can be used as thermally conductive filler to construct a "sandwich" structured composite with PEEK film. When the mass ratio is 1:1, the λ of composite is 3.1 W/(m·K), which is 1200% higher than that of PEEK. This work provides better understanding of PEEK based thermal conductive composites for the prospective application of thermal management materials in electrical insulating related fields.

Background Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is well known for its excellent physical–chemical properties and biosafety. The study aimed to open up a new method for clinical application of PEEK to reconstruct large-scale bone defects. Methods A bilayer scaffold for bone regeneration was prepared by combining a sulfonated PEEK barrier framework (SPEEK) with a hydrogel layer loaded with aspirin (ASA) and nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) by the wet-bonding of Polydopamine (PDA).Results The hydrogel was successfully adhered to the surface of SPEEK, resulting in significant changes including the introduction of bioactive groups, improved hydrophilicity, and altered surface morphology. Subsequent tests confirmed that the bilayer scaffold exhibited enhanced compression resistance and mechanical compatibility with bone compared to a single hydrogel scaffold. Additionally, the bilayer scaffold showed stable and reliable bonding properties, as well as excellent biosafety verified by cell proliferation and viability experiments using mouse embryo osteoblast precursor (MC3T3-E1) cells. Conclusion The bilayer bone regeneration scaffold prepared in this study showed promising potential in clinical application for bone regeneration.

Using highly sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) as the base material, the structure and properties of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) membranes are optimized by precisely controlling the doping of phosphotungstic acid (HPW), dopamine (DA), and various amounts of carbon nanomaterials. Compared with conventional PEEK membranes, this optimized membrane exhibits higher proton conductivity, lower water absorption swelling rate, and excellent thermal stability. Highly SPEEK is soluble in water, thus fails to be used in fuel cell applications. Herein, we conduct Friedel-Crafts method to obtain cross-linked highly sulfonated membrane with controlled water uptake and swelling while still maintaining high proton conductivity. The polymer is then doped with phosphotungstic acid (HPW) to acquire enhanced performance. To control HPW leakage, polydopamine (PDA) acting as double-sided adhesive is incorporated within the membrane. By distributing 1 wt.% PDA, the HPW leakage is reduced almost three times. The composite C-SPEEK/HPW x /PDA y membranes have exhibited excellent overall performance. Specifically, the best proton conductivity result of C-SPEEK/HPW 50 has reached 0.271 S/cm. Moreover, it has presented superb performance in H 2 /O 2 single cell test recorded as power density of 886.13 mW/cm 2 while current density is 1614.20 mA/cm 2 at 60°C.

Proton exchange membranes with high ionic conductivity and good chemical stability are critical for achieving high power density and long lifespan of direct methanol cells (DMFCs). Herein, a zwitterionic molecule was grafted onto the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers to obtain functionalized PVDF porous substrate (SBMA-PDA@PVDF). Then, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) was filled into the pores of SBMA-PDA@PVDF, and further ionic cross-linked via H 2 SO 4 to prepare the composite membrane (SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK). The basic groups on the zwitterionic interface could not only establish ionic cross-linking with SPEEK to increase chemical stability and reduce swelling, but also serve as the adsorption sites for subsequent H 2 SO 4 cross-linking to significantly enhance proton conductivity. Super-high proton conductivity (165.34 mS cm −1 , 80 °C) was achieved for the membrane, which was 2.12 times higher than that of the pure SPEEK. Moreover, the SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK membrane exhibited remarkably improved oxidative stability of 91.6 % mass retention after soaking in Fenton’s agent for 12 h, while pure SPEEK completely decomposed. Satisfactorily, the DMFC assembled with SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK exhibited a peak power density of 99.01 mW cm −2 , which was twice as much as that of commercial Nafion 212 (48.88 mW cm −2 ). After 235 h durability test, only 11 % voltage loss was observed.
